“Top Gun: Maverick” won the live-action feature film award at the Cinema Audio Society’s Cas Awards, which took place in Los Angeles on Saturday evening.
It won in a category whose nominees were identical to the lineup in the Oscars’ Best Sound category: “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “The Batman,” “Elvis” and “Top Gun: Maverick.” During the time when the Oscars gave out separate sound awards for mixing and editing, the Cas winner went on to take the Oscar for sound mixing a little less than half the time – but in the first two years after the Academy combined its two categories into one, the guild and Oscar winners have matched both times.
Other feature-film winners included “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” for animation and “Moonage Daydream” for documentary.
Television winners included “Better Call Saul,” “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” “Formula 1: Drive to Survive” and “Only Murders in the Building.

Jon Taylor explains that Damien Chazelle wanted the sound for “First Man” to have a “documentary style.” Because this biographical drama about astronaut Neil Armstrong‘s historic trip to the moon was shot like a piece of nonfiction, the mix needed “a reality to it at all times.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Taylor and Frank A. Montaño above.
See 2019 Oscars guild awards scorecard: ‘First Man’ gets first win from Visual Effects Society
For Montaño, a self-professed Nasa fanatic, authenticity was key. So he and Taylor used some of the original “pieces and gear” from Project Gemini for the film. “I remember reading an article on ‘Saving Private Ryan,'” Montaño recalls, “how some of the vets, when they sat down and watched it … it put them back to that space and time. In this case, being an enthusiast since I was eight-years-old, I just had a kinship to the program.

As 2018 draws to a close and various critics groups and deliberating bodies measure the year in movie superlatives, a look below the line at the Academy’s crafts races reveals an art form invigorated by many of today’s most brilliant cinematic minds.
Perhaps the most fully realized visual effort is director Barry Jenkins’ follow-up to the Oscars-crashing “Moonlight”: an adaptation of James Baldwin’s “If Beale Street Could Talk.” For the task of translating 1970s Harlem to the screen, Jenkins tapped underappreciated production designer Mark Friedberg, who despite genius efforts on films like “Far From Heaven” and “Synecdoche, New York,” has never been nominated for an Oscar. “Moonlight” composer Nicholas Britell returned with intricate themes to bear, along with costume designer Caroline Eselin, who embraced a far juicier opportunity this time around. Cap it off with lush photography, once again courtesy of Dp James Laxton, and this is quite an attractive package.

"The Revenant": The sound team (led by sound editors Martin Hernandez and Lon Bender and mixers Jon Taylor, Frank Montaño, Randy Thom and Chris Duesterdiek) brilliantly make nature a sonic character and immerse us in Leonardo DiCaprio’s intense journey in the most effective way. They found existing sounds (bear vocalizations, trees creaking in the wind) and recorded them in real, appropriate locations. The opening Native American ambush has a natural ebb and flow and a nice lull between the action, with the sound of footsteps, wind blowing in the trees, and distant dogs barking in between each flurry of arrows. Plus, the incredible bear attack was sonically underplayed for greater realism, and getting the breathing right — using the sound of a sick horse toward the end when the bear is injured, for example — was just as important as the vocalizations. And what was that weird, mantra-like sound effect?...

Leave it to the Brits! The BAFTA nominations were announced and they gave us a slightly different look at the awards season! For instance, Tom McCarthy's "Spotlight," the leading Oscar contender in the U.S. just received 3 noms including Best Film, Supporting Actor for Mark Ruffalo and Original Screenplay. No Director nomination for McCarthy.
Meanwhile, Steven Spielberg's "Bridge of Spies," a handsomely-produced period piece led the pack along with Todd Haynes' "Carol," another handsomely-produced period piece. Both films garnered nine nominations each including Best Picture. "Bridge of Spies" and "Carol" will duke it out with "Spotlight," Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu's "The Revenant" (eight nominations), and Adam McKay's "The Big Short" (five nominations) for the Best Picture trophy.
So where's "Mad Max: Fury Road" and "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" you ask? They're relegated to the technical categories. Apparently, sequels, no matter how great they are, can't compete with originals.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has just announced there nominations and there’s quite a lot to process, so let’s start from the top. Steven Spielberg’s Cold War drama Bridge of Spies and Todd Haynes’ gorgeous relationship drama Carol have tied for the lead with nine nominations apiece, with both films receiving nominations for Best Film, Best Director, and Best Screenplay (in their respective categories). Well, we're done. Another Oscar ceremony ends, and with it, another awards season and another year of Tech Support here at In Contention. On the whole, "The Grand Budapest Hotel" came out the big winner, taking four of the 10 crafts categories. "Whiplash" came up with two more while "Birdman," "Interstellar," "Selma" and "American Sniper" got in on the love-sharing with one apiece. Crafts category shut-outs for "Mr. Turner," "Unbroken" and "The Imitation Game," despite their impressive nomination counts, were unsurprising. It was also a year of repeat victors. Winners in Best Cinematography, Costume Design, Makeup and Hairstyling, Sound Editing and Visual Effects had all won previously. There was one big first-timer, though, in Alexandre Desplat – more on him in a moment. Others are still waiting for their first wins, alas. Cinematographer Roger Deakins, songwriter Diane Warren and sound mixer Frank Montaño immediately jump to mind. Emmanuel Lubezki's triumph in...

A memorable 87th annual Academy Awards for Fox Searchlight saw Birdman claim best film, director and two other statuettes to tie with The Grand Budapest Hotel’s four-strong haul.
Boyhood, which entered the evening on six nominations and had been expected to push Birdman in several of the senior categories on Sunday night, won a sole best supporting actress for Patricia Arquette.
The film’s time in the Oscar ceremony spotlight will not be forgotten, however, as Arquette paid tribute to her “Boyhood family” and made an impassioned plea for wage equality that spread like wildfire across social media.
Eddie Redmayne from The Theory Of Everything prevailed in a tight best actor contest to deny Michael Keaton another success for Birdman. The popular victory had the British actor jumping with excitement on stage at the Dolby Theatre.

Oscar 2015 winners (photo: Chris Pratt during Oscar 2015 rehearsals) The complete list of Oscar 2015 winners and nominees can be found below. See also: Oscar 2015 presenters and performers. Now, a little Oscar 2015 trivia. If you know a bit about the history of the Academy Awards, you'll have noticed several little curiosities about this year's nominations. For instance, there are quite a few first-time nominees in the acting and directing categories. In fact, nine of the nominated actors and three of the nominated directors are Oscar newcomers. Here's the list in the acting categories: Eddie Redmayne. Michael Keaton. Steve Carell. Benedict Cumberbatch. Felicity Jones. Rosamund Pike. J.K. Simmons. Emma Stone. Patricia Arquette. The three directors are: Morten Tyldum. Richard Linklater. Wes Anderson. Oscar 2015 comebacks Oscar 2015 also marks the Academy Awards' "comeback" of several performers and directors last nominated years ago. Marion Cotillard and Reese Witherspoon won Best Actress Oscars for, respectively, Olivier Dahan...

When the first Academy Awards were handed out on May 16, 1929, at an Academy banquet in the Blossom Room of the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, movies had just begun to talk. The attendance was 270 and guest tickets cost $5. It was a long banquet, filled with speeches, but presentation of the statuettes was handled expeditiously by Academy President Douglas Fairbanks.
The suspense that now touches most of the world at Oscar time was not always a characteristic of the Awards presentation. That first year, the award recipients were announced to the public three months ahead of the ceremony.
Today, Oscar pundits and fans alike avidly watch the precursor and guild awards to ultimately make their predictions in the 24 categories. Academy members have cast their ballots, so now it’s our turn for our Oscar picks.

The guilds, British Academy (BAFTA) and critics have all had their say. We're now four days from the 87th annual Academy Awards, so it's time to finally analyze the race for the wins. Most categories are fairly predictable, but there are some wildcards. While I expect "The Grand Budapest Hotel" to take more than its share of craft categories, with "American Sniper" and possibly "Birdman" doing well, too, it's fair to say we won't be seeing a year like last year, where "Gravity" took six of 10 categories, and "The Great Gatsby" took two more. More interesting is what I suspect will be a trend of repeat Oscar winners. I'm guessing the winners in most categories (Cinematography, Costume Design, Makeup and Hairstyling, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing and Visual Effects) will have already thanked the Academy before. While most of these winners would be deserving, several big names will still be waiting for their first statuettes.

With the Oscars just around the corner, it’s time to lay down my predictions for all 24 categories. While, as usual, most categories seem like a pretty solid lock, there’s always the possibility of a surprise or two, so let’s get right to it.

Well, if you depend on the guilds and societies to help you predict your Oscar ballots the Cinema Audio Society (Cas) and Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild handed out their awards last night adding a little fuel to the fire. I think most people have American Sniper taking the Sound Mixing award at the Oscars, but if you want to go the way of the Cas you'll be putting Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) on that top line. Sound mixers Thomas Varga, Jon Taylor, Frank A. Montano, Gustavo Borner, Jason Oliver and John Sanacore took home the Cas Award for best live action sound editing while the animated award went to the team behind Big Hero 6 -- Gabriel Guy, David Fluhr, Alan Meyerson and Mary Jo Lang. Meanwhile, over with the Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild it was a big night for the teams behind...

Capping off a busy night for awards in the run-up to the 87th annual Oscars, the Cinema Audio Society (Cas) awarded the sound mixing team of "Birdman" top honors Saturday night. "Sherlock," "Game of Thrones" and "Modern Family" won in the TV categories. Clint Eastwood's war film "American Sniper" is considered the favorite to win the comparable Best Sound Mixing Oscar, though "Birdman" was nominated by the Academy's sound branch as well and, indeed, could be formidable if it is the industry favorite the guild awards have suggested it is so far. "Whiplash," also Oscar-nominated, won the BAFTA prize. "Interstellar" and "Unbroken" are also up for the Academy Award, each of them nominated by Cas as well. Six of the last eight Cas winners have won the sound mixing Oscar. Check out the full list of Cas winners below, nominees here and the rest of the season's offerings at The Circuit.

The 2015 Ee BAFTA Awards were handed out in London Sunday night and while the broadcast aired hours later in the United States, it didn't stop us from chronicling the twists and turns of a show often seen as a bellwether for the Academy Awards. It took home only three BAFTAs, but "Boyhood" was the biggest winner of the night as it won Best Film and Richard Linklater earned Director honors. "The Grand Budapest Hotel" took home five statues including Original Screenplay for Wes Anderson, Production Design, Costumes, Original Music and Make Up & Hair. "Whiplash" earned three BAFTAs including J.K. Simmons for Supporting Actor, Editing and a somewhat surprising win in Sound. Expected Oscar winners Julianne Moore took Leading Actress and Patricia Arquette took Supporting Actress. Eddie Redmayne earned a key win over rival Michael Keaton by claiming the Lead Actor BAFTA for "The Theory of Everything." The latter also won...
