The words offbeat, personal and edgy used to be a draw for movie fare — we’d check out a new relationship picture based only on an actor or two that we liked. Bobby Roth’s semi-autobiographical buddy story has a good stab at the early ’80s art + singles scene in Los Angeles, with a dash of macho clichés — pals Peter Coyote and Nick Mancuso fight in public and somehow suffer while bedding fantastic women. But the overall vibe is one of honest sensitivity, aided by fine performances from Carole Laure, Kathryn Harrold and Carol Wayne. Plus music by Tangerine Dream.

Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie directors! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between.
This is the third episode of what we are calling The Final Frame. Here we will dissect the final film of a great, well-respected filmmaker, wrapped in the context of said filmmaker’s entire career. Our subject today: the recently departed Peter Bogdanovich. His final film: She’s Funny That Way, starring Owen Wilson, Imogen Poots, Kathryn Hahn, Rhys Ifans, Jennifer Aniston, Will Forte, Austin Pendleton, George Morfogen, Richard Lewis, and Cybill Shepherd. But wait! That’s only half-true! Before the half-hearted release of She’s Funny That Way, there was another version of the film. Its title? Squirrels to the Nuts. This is the cut that Bogdanovich wanted the world to see. Until the studio made him change it.

George Morfogen, an actor whose career spanned Broadway (most recently in 2008’s A Man For All Seasons), film and the TV role for which he’s probably most widely known — as the seen-it-all inmate Bob Rebadow of HBO’s Oz — died March 8 at his home in New York.
His death was announced by his family in a New York Times obituary. No cause was disclosed, but donations in his memory can be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation.
Although Morfogen will be instantly recognizable to viewers of the intense, addictive Oz (1997–2003), in which his quiet, laid-back, eldery survivor of the brutal Oswald State Correctional Facility often was a mentor to younger, hotter heads, the actor appeared on no fewer than 12 TV series. Among them were St, Elsewhere, Deadly Matrimony, Blood Feud and Sherlock Holmes. His TV credits go back to Kojak and The Adams Chronicles...

Peter Bogdanovich, who helmed the brilliant The Last Picture Show and comedy classic What’s Up Doc?, has stepped behind the camera for his first feature in 14 years. After the lengthy break he took following The Cat’s Meow, he’s back with a throwback to the screwball comedies of yesteryear, She’s Funny That Way.
A unique blend of character, comedy and homage, Bogdanovich has assembled the type of starry cast that works to rouse moviegoers from their instant streaming and into theaters. The film stars Owen Wilson as a Broadway director who sleeps with a prostitute (Imogen Poots) who’s keen to make a break into acting. He falls for the youngster and makes a promise to help advance her career from the streets to the stage, until things go awry when the starlet winds up auditioning for a play starring his wife. Venice — Your enjoyment of dodgy comedy "She's Funny That Way" will depend hugely on your personal tolerance for coincidence as plot mechanic. How many coincidences need to occur before the characters might as well start saying "a wizard did it" by way of explaining the wherefores of the plot? What's your personal tipping point? Perhaps your answer will depend on genre. Even in sci-fi or fantasy, "a wizard did it" is still a pretty poor explanation unless the wizard has a satisfying motive. In a more realistic genre, the greater the number of coincidences, the greater the strain on audience credulity. The genre of farce, though broadly realistic (there are usually no wizards), is of course often borderline fantastical in terms of the believability of people's behavior and the frequency with which coincidence craps all over the characters' hopes and dreams. "She's Funny That Way" leans heavily on this creaky...

Ivanov Classic Stage Company, NYC
If you are unfamiliar with Anton Chekhov's seldom-produced Russian twist on Hamlet, Classic Stage Company is offering a stunning opportunity to cover that gaping hole with one of their best works in recent years. The play Ivanov is a stellar piece of theater, and this production gives full rein to its high humor and devastating tragedy as it rides a very intense three hours of poetic drama.
2012 has turned out to be an inspired year for plays, and Ivanov will only make it that much more difficult for voters from the Obies & Lortels to pick the appropriate winners, as the cast, design crew, and director from this melancholy celebration of life all present very worthy contenders.
It's Ethan Hawke's face that is on all the ads, and his name that will likely draw many audience members; while this is an ensemble production, Hawke is deserving of the attention.

Since the baby descended upon their lives, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard have been laying low, staying out of the spotlight. (Except, of course, for Ms. Gyllenhaal showing Katie Holmes how Dawes is done.) But now each actor has a bunch of projects on the way, and have added a play to the mix.
Variety reports the pair have grabbed roles in an Off Broadway production of Anton Chekhov's Uncle Vanya, which will hit the stage next year. The twist in this news -- they're both grabbing roles, but they're not playing lovers. Gyllenhaal will play Yelena, while Sarsgaard plays doctor Astrov. This means that she'll play the new, young wife of Serebrakov (the 70+ George Morfogen ... a coupling I bet you didn't see coming!). Also in the cast are Meryl Streep's daughter, Mamie Gummer, and Denis O'Hare (the man who watched the infinite abyss in Garden State) as Uncle Vanya.
