Demanding a Rajeev Ravi film on a Vineeth Sreenivasan movie ticket is silly. If you don’t like the elements that define a Vineeth Sreenivasan movie, Varshangalkku Shesham is not going to be your cup of tea; but if you are a fan of the bubble-wrapped delicateness of his movie-making, Varshangalkku Shesham is Exhibit A.
For the unreserved, Vineeth, the eldest son of noted Malayalam screenwriter and actor Sreenivasan, is a filmmaker known for his feel-good stories coated with preachy motivation and an overload of goodness. In Vineeth’s cinematic universe, everything has a warm color tone, people are nicer than usual, romances are over the top, characters who struggle in life can still afford a cozy studio apartment, every character gives free advice to the squandering male lead, and every door he apparently knocks on seems to open. Now, put all these elements together, and you get a blueprint...

Toshihiko’s feature debut chronicles a woman in her early 30s employed in a corporate job in Tokyo who meets a deaf landscape photographer living deep in the mountains of Hokkaido.
Toshihiko worked with a cast and crew of mostly-non professionals and students and not only directed “Rei,” but also produced, edited and acted in the film. He takes home a prize worth €40,000 given by a jury comprised of “Sweet Dreams” director Ena Sendijarević, producer and historian Marco Müller, “Ebola Syndrome” director and screenwriter Herman Yau, pioneering “Bless Their Little Hearts” filmmaker Billy Woodberry and producer Nadia Turincev.
The jury called Toshihiko a “burgeoning film director who chose to develop his debut film in a loose and unbounded environment,” and whose strength lies in “a collaborative environment centered on the actors.

For me, biopics have become quite a dubious cinematic genre. On the one hand, we might get a great movie about a famous personality, but on the other hand, the movie could be so formulaic that it’s hard to appreciate. The 2023 movie about the Sri Lankan off-spin bowler Muttiah Muralitharan, titled 800, falls into the category of a well-made biopic with a great lead cast, but eventually, the beats of the movie are placed at such intervals in the film that it becomes too predictable at times. The film very nicely depicts the prodigy’s early years, showing us the historical background in which he was brought up. The latter half, when Murali was world-famous, is weak, as it offers very little insight into the man. The major events of his cricketing career are rushed and ticked off one by one; the problem is that they are dealt with very superficially.

We all know about the on-field journey of the Sri Lankan spin maestro Muttiah Muralitharan. Every cricket lover has seen his impressive bowling during intense tournaments, but this is the first time audiences are being introduced to the story of the real struggles of this living legend off the cricket field – from being oppressed, mistreated, attacked, bullied to taking everything in his stride and becoming the highest wicket taker in the history of the game.
Coming from a poor family, and going through riots, Muralitharan’s story as chronicled in the film will inspire you to dream, and follow it.
Based on true incidents from the life of the first Sri Lankan to be inducted into the Icc Hall of Fame, played on screen by Madhur Mittal, the sports drama is not just a treat for cricket fans, but also a story that channelises emotions and narrates the heart-breaking tale of someone who,...

Even more so, considering her astonishing range and talent. If one were to draw a career chart of the 55-year-old actor, they would find that her progression is staggeringly consistent not only as a performer, but as someone who has casually reinvented herself at crucial junctures in her career. Bindu, however, rarely got the opportunities or scripts to flex her craft like her male contemporaries. Or let’s just say she probably couldn’t afford the work flexibility of male...

ObituaryInnocent will go down in the history of Malayalam cinema as a stupendously talented actor, who spread unmitigated joy on screen, writes Neelima Menon. The heavily pronounced Irinjalakuda slang, that bashful tilt of his head, the peculiar gesticulations, the fine balance between subtlety and hyperbole, and the unforgettable one-liners delivered with soft precision. What made Innocent one of the most cheering sights in Malayalam cinema is all of these and more. Like most in his legion of stupendously talented supporting actors, Innocent flourished during the late 1980s and 90s, popularly termed as the ‘golden period’ in Malayalam cinema. It was during this period that Innocent, who had already made his debut as an actor and producer a decade earlier, found that his niche lay in initiating Malayalam cinema into the realm of satire. So after 50-60 films in which he played notable as well as forgettable characters, Innocent allied with...
