It would appear that Neil Jordan is fixating on death in his future, since he’s not only developing films based on Neil Gaiman’s The Graveyard Book and Joe Hill’s thriller Heart Shaped Box, but he also signed on to direct an adaptation of Paul Murray’s book Skippy Dies.Murray’s tome, which has landed on the Booker Prize long list, is not, in fact a tragedy about Australia’s kangaroo-shaped answer to Lassie. Nope, it’s actually the tale of two mismatched roommates in an Irish boarding school.Ruprecht, a maths whizz and talented French horn player, rooms with Skippy, a boy whose mother is dying of cancer and who is being abused by the school’s gym teacher. As if his life couldn’t get worse, he then dies, and Ruprecht begins a series of science experiments to contact his friend in the afterlife. Jordan...

If it weren’t for all the books being adapted for the big screen, my reading list would be a lot lighter. One book that is being added immediately is Skippy Dies by Paul Murray. The book has received rave reviews since being released in the UK. The book will see an August 31 release stateside.

Director Neil Jordan (Interview with the Vampire, The Brave One) is to adapt Irish author Paul Murray‘s novel Skippy Dies, taking on writing duties as well as helming the film himself, reports Variety.
The novel, released early this year, is about the titular character Skippy (so named because of his resemblance of the kangaroo), a fourteen-year-old boy who is going through the trials of boarding school in Dublin. As the title suggests, the book is also about his death and takes in the before-and-after of his demise, focusing on various characters along the way. The story is said to be both comic and touching, with tender and dark moments, and has received wide critical acclaim since it’s release.
Jordan currently has two films already scheduled including an adaptation of Neil Gaiman‘s novel The Graveyard Book and is currently filming the TV series The Borgias so where this...

Neil Jordan, who recently helmed "Ondine" and "The Brave One," will direct the big-screen adaptation of Paul Murray's "Skippy Dies." Variety says Jordan will also be in charge of writing the screenplay.
The story follows Ruprecht and Skippy, two roommates at a public school in Ireland. Ruprecht is a math wizard, and when Skippy dies, Ruprecht tries to find a scientific way to get in touch with the dead.
This doesn't sound like a new concept, but I'm sure Jordan can do a lot with the material. Jordan's credits also include "Breakfast on Pluto," "The Good Thief," "The Crying Game" and "The End of the Affair."...

According to Deadline an upcoming film adaptation of Skippy Dies, Paul Murray’s Booker Prize long-listed novel rather than an eulogy to everyone’s favourite kangaroo, is to be written and directed by Neil Jordan.
Described as South Park meets Tom Brown’s Schooldays, the book follows the adventures of two unlikely schoolmates, Skippy and Reprecht, at a boarding school in Ireland.
The project will see Jordan (Interview With A Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles) reunite with regular producers Number 9 Films (How To Lose Friends And Alienate People) and Littlewave Film Productions (Ondine).
Jordan’s recent Ondine was a triumphant fairy tale and the director is also rumoured to be involved in adapting Neil Gaiman’s sublime The Graveyard Book to the big screen.

You may not had heard of Neil Jordan's almost literal fish out of water story Ondine starring Colin Farrell until we tossed up a couple trailers and a positive review from our own Jeremy Kirk. Well, you won't be out of the loop with Jordan's next project as Deadline reports the filmmaker will write and direct an adaptation of Paul Murray's novel Skippy Dies, a story following the adventures of two unlikely schoolmates, Skippy and Ruprecht, at an Irish private school. Upon first inspection, it doesn't sound too thrilling, but apparently the book has been described as "South Park" meets Tom Brown's Schooldays, which sounds much better. Here's a more extended look at the story found in the teenage-centric novel from Paul Murray: Why Skippy dies and what happens next is the subject of this dazzling and uproarious novel, unraveling a mystery that links the boys of...

"Ondine" director Neil Jordan is dipping his hand in another novel as he signs up to take on "Skippy Dies". Jordan will be writing and directing the big screen version of the Paul Murray written tale which at the moment is not set for any sort of release date. Locked in to produce the feature is Stephen Woolley and Elizabeth Karlsen under Number 9 Films with James Flynn perched in under Littlewave Film Productions. The story centers on two unlikely roommates -- Ruprecht, a mathematical genius with a penchant for the French horn, and Skippy, whose mother is dying of cancer and who is being abused by the school's gym teacher. When Skippy dies, Ruprecht performs a slew of wacky science experiments in an attempt to reach his friend beyond the grave.Sure, not too many people flocked out to the limited movie theaters to see "Ondine", but that's not...

A fan of book to film adaptations, after previously being tipped to direct Neil Gaiman's The Graveyard Book and Joe Hill's Heart Shaped Box, Neil Jordan has now set his sights on a feature adaptation of Paul Murray's Skippy Dies, a set in Ireland, dark comedy that will be set up by Number 9 Films' Stephen Woolley and Elizabeth Karlsen and James Flynn's Littlewave Film Productions. From the feedback I'm getting from some book review sites, it appears that Skippy Dies will provide Jordan with a lot to work with. The book, which is actually a trio of novels and over 600 pages in length, works with many genres. Set in a public school in Ireland, this follows the adventures of two unlikely roommates -- Ruprecht, a mathematical genius with a penchant for the French horn, and Skippy, whose mother is dying of cancer and who...

Neil Jordan's latest film, Ondine, came and went without much notice despite boasting Colin Farrell in the lead role as a man falling in love with a possible mermaid. But the director also of The End of the Affair and Breakfast on Pluto has never been afraid to keep making small movies in the past, and that's exactly what he plans to keep doing as he moves on to Skippy Dies, an adaptation of Paul Murray's novel. According to Deadline Skippy is an Irish novel about school friends Skippy and Ruprecht, described as "South Park meets Tom Brown's Schooldays," whatever that means. The project fits right next to Pluto and Ondine as a story set in Jordan's native Ireland, but hey, with a concept that weird, maybe it will garner more attention than either of those underseen films. Published this spring, Skippy Dies was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize,...

Paul Murray's novel Skippy Dies is "a sprawling boarding school comedy with a dark heart," according to the Guardian, which reviewed the novel when it was published in the UK earlier this year. (The paper also called the book " one of the most enjoy able, funny and moving reads of this young new year.") The such adoring press it's no wonder a film development deal is in motion, and now Neil Jordan is signed to write and direct. Deadline and Variety both report that Jordan is writing and directing the film, How does this fit into Jordan's existing slate, which includes Showtime's Renaissance family drama The Borgias, with Jeremy Irons, and an adaptation of Neil Gaiman's The Graveyard Book? The Borgias is already going, but it seems like financing has been slow to come together for The Graveyard Book, so Skippy Dies could well get going after The Borgias.

I didn't see Neil Jordan's last film, Ondine, though I understand it's much like a modern-day fairy tale. I did see The Brave One, though, which wasn't terribly whimsical, and Breakfast on Pluto before that, which was plenty so. The point is, it seems like Jordan can have a light touch when he needs one, and it sounds like his next project will indeed.
According to Variety, he'll be writing and directing an adaptation of Paul Murray's novel, Skippy Dies, in which two Irish schoolmates -- a math whiz and the gym teacher's favorite target -- bond when the latter dies and the former "performs a slew of wacky science experiments in an attempt to reach his friend beyond the grave." The novel's description on Amazon reads a bit loopier than that logline, though. I mean, "a cast of characters that ranges from hip-hop-loving fourteen-year-old Eoin "Mc Sexecutioner...

From The Crying Game…to Skippy Dies. That’s the trajectory for writer-director Neil Jordan, who has just signed on to helm a feature adaptation of Paul Murray’s book Skippy, which has been called “South Park meets Tom Brown’s Schooldays,” according to Variety. The story of Skippy follows two unlikely school roommates — Ruprecht, a math whiz who plays the French horn, and Skippy, who has a mother dying of cancer and is being abused by the gym teacher at the school. As you might guess, Skippy does indeed die, and Ruprecht puts together science experiments to try to...

Daniel 'Skippy' Juster is his roommate. In the grand old Dublin institution that is Seabrook College for Boys, nobody pays either of them much attention. But when Skippy falls for Lori, the Frisbee-playing Siren from the girls' school next door, suddenly all kinds of...
