Ron Howard’s “Apollo 13” celebrated its 25th anniversary on June 30. With the help of post house Digital Domain, the 1995 film depicted a 1970 space mission that turned into a fight for survival after an oxygen tank exploded in the service module.
Variety looked up Kelly Port (“Avengers: Endgame”) and Matthew Butler (“Ready Player One”), two VFX supervisors who worked on the film in their junior years at the house.
What are some of the memorable VFX scenes you worked on for “Apollo 13”?
Kelly Port: This was one of the first film projects I ever worked on. I was responsible for the directional thruster effects, floating debris after the explosion and, if I remember correctly, some parts of the moon.
Matthew Butler: This was a time when we were bootstrapping like crazy. Back then, there weren’t any set procedures or mechanisms at Digital Domain to facilitate the workflow, like there are now.

With Buck, the famed St. Bernard/Farm Collie, serving as the protagonist in Fox’s latest adaptation of Jack London’s wilderness adventure, “The Call of the Wild,” there was never any question that he had to be CG, especially if he was going to hold his own on screen with Harrison Ford.
“Here’s the thing: No one is fooled by a CG animal,” said Chris Sanders, who made the transition from animation to a live-action/hybrid after directing “The Croods” and co-directing “How to Train Your Dragon” and “Lilo and Stitch.” “So the question that I confronted early on was: Do we try and make this look like a 100% real dog? Meaning, do we actually have him behaving as though he’s a trained dog on set, but doesn’t hit his marks quite right, and have some takes look as though it was good enough? Or do...

The 86th annual Academy Awards were really fun to watch. Ellen Degeneres did a fantastic job hosting, and I enjoyed the show she put on. It was also insanely predictable, at least, for me it was. Overall, I'm happy with all of the films that won. My favorite win of the the night was Spike Jonze taking home the Oscar for Best Original screenplay for Her. That was such an amazing movie, and I really wanted it to win that award, but I wasn't sure it would happen. My favorite speech of the night came from Best Actor winner Matthew McConaughey. I was never really a big fan of his, but over the last couple of years he has sure blown up into an amazing actor who has starred in some really incredible films. Then that speech he gave last night won me over, and now I'm on team McConaughey.

After a lengthy awards season that lasted three long months, the race for the Oscars came to a conclusion tonight at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
This year’s 86th Academy Awards saw a split between Best Picture and Director. 12 Years A Slave won three, including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress for Lupita Nyong’o.
Backstage, producer/actor Brad Pitt said, “ I love this movie. I ‑‑ just as a film, as a lover of film, the filmmaking, the ‑‑ this heroic story of a man in this inhumane situation trying to get back to his family. I love this film. I love the filmmaking. In the lead-up to the 86th annual Academy Awards on March 2, HitFix will be bringing you the lowdown on all 24 Oscar categories with multiple entries each day. Take a few notes and bone up on the competition as we give you the edge in your office Oscar pool! The season of Oscars Lowdown (née Oscar Guide) might as well begin with the biggest no-brainer category of the bunch, just to go ahead and get it out of the way. But it's worth pointing out that it's always unfortunate when there's an obvious winner in any category, particularly Best Visual Effects as it seems a number of times over the last few years — "Avatar," "Life of Pi," etc. — there has been a clear dominant player and all other nominees are just along for the ride. Still, this year's likely victor is a landmark every bit deserving of the trophy coming its way.

We woke up early with Hollywood this morning for the nominations for the granddaddy of the awards season -- the Oscars! Mister Thor himself, Chris Hemsworth, along with the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences President Cheryl Boone Isaacs announced the nominations, and there were not a whole lot of surprises.
But I'm very happy that the Academy honored "Dallas Buyers Club" with a nod for Best Picture along with Golden Globe winners, Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto, getting Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor nominations respectively.
David O. Russell's "American Hustle" and Alfonso Cuaron's "Gravity" dominated the nominations with 10 nods each including Best Picture. The films will compete with "12 Years a Slave," "Captain Phillips," "Her," "Nebraska," "Philomena," "Dallas Buyers Club," and "The Wolf of Wall Street."

Now that we are knee-deep in awards season it is time to avoid to political back-slapping and enjoy the film year in retrospect. There’s little chance that the 86th Academy Awards nominations will throw up any grand surprises however the debate it will stir will all point to a positive outcome: that people who love film will champion them and argue about their inclusion (or not).
With the 2014 BAFTA nominations recently announced it’ll be interesting to see how far apart the two Academies are this year, but there are sure to be favourites in common. Steve McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave is certain to gather up nominations, likewise Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity will grab onto directing and technical awards for sure, American Hustle is certain to have a nomination of two as well. What we’re looking forward to are the smaller films, unable to throw stocked coffers at For Your Consideration campaigns,...

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will explore how stunt artists utilize emerging technologies to bring previously impossible stunts to the screen in “Real to Reel: The Art of Action” on Friday, September 20, at 7:30 p.m. at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.
Using scenes from films including “The Matrix” (1999), “Transformers” (2007), “Alice in Wonderland” (2010), “Real Steel” (2011), “Warrior” (2011), “Skyfall” (2012), “The Master” (2012) and “Iron Man 3″ (2013), “Real to Reel” will illustrate how technology is expanding cinematic possibilities for stunt artists.
Hosted by stunt coordinator Garrett Warren, the night will include live demonstrations, behind-the-scenes footage and conversations with some of the films’ creative teams, who will discuss how scenes were created.
Warren was a martial artist before launching his on-screen career. He has served as stunt coordinator on such features as “Beowulf” (2007), “Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian” (2009), “Avatar” (2009), “Alice in Wonderland” (2010), “Real Steel” (2011) and “Lincoln” (2012). The 84th Annual Academy Awards ended up being one of the most entertaining Academy Award shows that I've seen in years, even though films I wanted to win didn't. I was rooting for Martin Scorsese and Hugo this year, but I knew that The Artist would end up taking home a majority of the big awards. In the end, each one of these films took home 5 Awards, Hugo took home the more technical ones though. I think it was a pretty easy year to predict the winners.
It was great to see Billy Crystal back up on stage; he really did a great job bringing light, fun entertainment that everyone could enjoy. Crystal was awesome and one of the best parts of the show. The guy is classic comedy. He helped bring back everything that the Oscars should be.

Crowded House said it best in the lyrics “Hey now, hey now, don’t dream its over.” Yes, the awards season officialy came to an end tonight at the Hollywood and Highland Center in Hollywood, CA. Tears, jubilation, substance and style were all memorable moments at the 84th Academy Awards hosted by Billy Crystal. With Sacha Baron Cohen’s shenanigans earlier on the red carpet and no huge upsets, Cirque du Soleil’s performance was the highlight of the evening.

The 84th Annual Academy Awards became a rightful homage to French cinema! "The Artist," distributed by The Weinstein company but the creative team is composed mostly of French folks, took home the big prize, the Best Picture award! "The Artist" won a total of 5 Oscars including Jean Dujardin for Best Actor, Michel Hazanavicius for Best Director, Best Costume Design, and Best Original Score.
But "Hugo" also won 5 Oscars, mostly technical and artistic merits, such as Best Art Direction, Cinematography, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, and Visual Effects.
"Hugo," of course, was itself an homage to George Melies, the French illusionist who gave us the trippy "A Trip to the Moon."
Both "The Artist" and "Hugo" led the Oscar nominations with 10 and 11 nods respectively.
There was really no "oh gosh what a surprise" moment of the evening except for Meryl Streep taking home the Best Actress Oscar from the perceived surefire winner Viola Davis of "The Help.

I am live-blogging the 84th Annual Academy Awards, I will begin when Billy Crystal walks out on stage. Why am I doing this? I watch the Oscars, therefore I know how boring it can be. I will have my laptop on hand so I figure I will bring some praise and cynicism to the party.
Winners will be in Red.

Tomorrow is the day where the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences celebrates the movies. We’ve waited all year and its finally here. By the time host Billy Crystal delivers his last punchline and concludes the 84th Academy Awards, the evening will have seen many celebrity-presenters appear on the Oscar stage at the Kodak Theatre.
Here’s my predictions for Hollywood’s big night.
Actor in a Leading Role
Demián Bichir in .A Better Life.
George Clooney in .The Descendants.
Jean Dujardin in .The Artist.
Gary Oldman in .Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.
Brad Pitt in .Moneyball.
Clooney’s performance was like none other he’s given before and with Slumdog Millionaire, Natalie Portman (Black Swan) and Jeff Bridges (Crazy Heart), Fox Searchlight is on a roll. However, The Artist’s Dujardin will take home his first Academy Award.
Possible upset – Brad Pitt is an all around good guy...

Each year, the Oscars recognize A-list talent we regularly see on screen, on the red carpet, and in tabloids. But the Academy Awards also reward those who work behind the scenes: the writers, editors, costume designers, and others who help create trophy-worthy movie magic. This Oscars season, we’ll be toasting those off-screen artists by delving into the hidden secrets that helped create the on-screen magic that we — and the Academy — fell in love with. For more access backstage during this Oscars season, click here for EW.com’s Oscars Behind the Scenes coverage.

The 84th Academy Awards will pay homage to the Golden Age of Hollywood. The perceived Oscar frontrunner, .The Artist,. is a black-and-white silent movie, while one of the Oscar Best Picture contenders, .Hugo,. touches upon the life of Georges Méliès and his magical .Trip to the Moon. (1902). Even Marilyn Monroe is being honored via a Best Actress nomination for Michelle Williams who played the icon in .My Week with Marilyn..
Amidst the glamour and the spectacle, this is one of the most unpredictable Oscars in recent memory. There is no clear-cut favorite. Even the awards darling .The Artist. may lose its voice on Oscar night. But I am marching forward to reveal my fearless 2012 Oscar predictions. Visual effect wiz Erik Nash says that the key to getting his Oscar vote is consistency. "The visual effects on a given movie are only as good as the least effective shots of the movie," explained Nash in a video chat with senior editors Rob Licuria and Chris Beachum. "If there's a shot or handful of shots ... because it didn't fit in with the scene or it isn't consistent with everything else, as a moviegoer that takes me out of the movie. All of a sudden, I am aware of the visual effects, and I mark that down significantly." Nash and his "Real Steel" team (Swen Gillberg, John Rosengrant and Dan Taylor) hope that this year's Oscar voters will reward their consistency and visionary work. They are nominated for Best Visual Effects against "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2," "Hugo," "Rise of the Planet of the Apes," and "Transformers: Dark of the Moon.

Here’s a glimpse inside the Oscar Nominees Luncheon for the 84th Academy Awards which took place in Beverly Hills, California, Monday, February 6, 2012. The 84th Academy Awards will be presented on Sunday, February 26, 2012, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center, and televised live by the ABC Television Network. On the menu was chopped vegetable salad, roasted Asian barbecued duck, soy-mirin seared Atlantic Salmon and a trio of sorbets in a chocolate cup.
Anne Thompson reported, “Oscarcast co-producer Brian Grazer promised a classy show. Filming of the Billy Crystal intro skit is under way (along with interviews with many of the nominees) — “everyone is in the film,” he said. The Kodak Theatre stage will be dressed like an old-time movie palace to sell the theme of going out to the movies. “Seeing films in that environment is a magnifier of how you feel emotionally,” he said. “You’ll feel like...

An Australian have been nominated for the 84th Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Awards announced overnight, with one more likely to be announced.
Included in the Oscars nomination line up is Australian film editor Kirk Baxter with producer Grant Hill likely to be recognised also.
Baxter, who won last year for David Fincher’s The Social Network, has been nominated for his work on David Fincher’s Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
Hill, producer of Terrence Mallick’s Tree of Life will most likely be nominated, with the film up for best picture, but the nominees yet to be determined. Hill was also a producer of Mallick’s Thin Red Line and the Wachowski brothers’ Matrix Trilogy and V for Vendetta.
It is a relatively quiet year for Australians at the Oscars, compared to last year seven nominations in which seven nominations were received. Wins went not only...
