Australia’s lucky run at the box office continues. Four out of the five highest grossing films last weekend were local titles, with new release Long Story Short joining the ranks with The Dry, Penguin Bloom and High Ground.
However, the national Bo was depressed, with Victorian cinemas – which typically boast around 27 per cent national market share – shuttered in the wake of a state-wide lockdown.
Roadshow’s The Dry remains the top performer, adding $711,168 in its seventh weekend to progress to $17.3 million; it is now the 15th highest grossing Australian film of all time (without adjusting for inflation).
Stablemate Penguin Bloom was again no. 2, bringing in $444,989 to advance to $5.9 million.
Writer-director Josh Lawson’s Long Story Short opened on $315,590 from 278 screens for Studiocanal, or $332,961 with previews.
The rom-com follows Teddy (Rafe Spall), a serial procrastinator who wakes up the morning after his wedding to discover that he’s jumped forward a year in his life.

Welcome to the latest installment in our regular Movies You May Have Missed series here on Nerdly, in which I highlight some of, what I think, are the best movies that have flown under the radar of many or have been “forgotten” in the intervening years since its release. This time round its the action sci-fi Robotropolis.
Stars: Zoe Naylor, Graham Sibley, Edward Foy, Lani John Tupu, Jourdan Lee | Written and Directed by Christopher Hatton
Official Synopsis:
A group of reporters are covering the unveiling of a new facility that is completely maintained by robot prototypes. When one of the robots goes haywire, the reporters find themselves not just reporting on the malfunction, but fighting for their lives.
My Thoughts:
Aussie actress Zoe Naylor, who you may remember from creature-feature The Reef, takes the lead in the second full length feature from writer-turned-director Christopher Hatton, and like his previously film...

Well, I can.t believe it.s been almost a decade since graduating from drama school and almost a decade since I.ve done any further drama study. I mean, I.ve worked closely with dialect coaches over the years and privately with teachers preparing auditions, but in terms of flexing the muscle in a classroom environment I haven.t done much.
Having spent the last two pilot seasons in La, it.s incredible to see the commitment actors make to the evolution of their craft. It.s not unusual to find professional actors taking two classes a week alongside their usual filming or stage commitments. That.s before their regular voice class, Alexander class and weekly session with a therapist which, according to renowned American acting coach, Larry Moss, are a must.
It.s funny, but in my late-teens and early-20s I couldn.t get enough of everything .drama.. There was Atyp,...

Director: Christopher Hatton. Review: Adam Wing. While a group of reporters are covering the unveiling of a high-tech industrial facility run by robots, one of the machines short circuits and goes haywire. The TV crew are forced to fight for their lives, battling an army of Metal Mickey’s that are threatening to wipe out the whole of mankind. Christopher Hatton takes charge on this one, with Zoe Naylor (The Reef), Graham Sibley (Days Of Our Lives) and Edward Foy (Standard Action) doing their best to keep up with the ropey dialogue, dubious special effects and terrifying screenplay. Stop me if you’ve heard this one. A team of TV news reporters are covering the story of a small town test facility where humans and robots live together in perfect harmony. A world in which man and machine co-exist, working together to build a better future. Whilst reporting on a...

Aussie actress Zoe Naylor, whom we last saw in creature-feature The Reef, takes the lead in the second full length feature from writer-turned-director Christopher Hatton, and like his previously film Avatar (no, not That one) the film is yet another future tale, this time based on the age old sci-fi cliche of robots – built for servitude – rising up and attacking their human masters.
Robotropolis takes place in a South East Asian community called New Town, a futuristic utopia built buy a global oil conglomerate to home the workers at a large petrochemical platform, where robots carry out the many mudane and often day-to-day tasks, including help run the oil platform, in a complete integration of man and machine. Kill List (18)
(Ben Wheatley, 2011, UK) Neil Maskell, MyAnna Buring, Michael Smiley, Emma Fryer. 95 mins
Who knew there was a missing link between Mike Leigh, Andy McNab and The Wicker Man? That's how unpredictable this macabre and outlandish tale is, but it unfolds in a credible modern-day Britain scarred by foreign wars and domestic recession. Circumstances lead a blokey hitman and his partner to accept a dodgy new assignment – and by the time they start asking questions, it's too late.
Attenberg (18)
(Athina Rachel Tsangari, 2010, Gre) Ariane Labed, Vangelis Mourikis, Evangelina Randou. 97 mins
Fans of Dogtooth will be ready for another prime dose of Greek oddness. Beneath the animal impersonations, silly walks and bad sex lies an intelligent, intimate study of human behaviour.
Fright Night (15)
(Craig Gillespie, 2011, Us) Anton Yelchin, Colin Farrell, David Tennant. 106 mins
A teen vampire horror remake that benefits from superior effects, a shrewd Las Vegas setting, and some lively comedy.

For as long as there have been movies, there have been tales of robots eventually wiping out the human race. From Metropolis to The Terminator, the fear of sentient machines is a palpable one, and in Robotropolis Armageddon is just a sprocket away.

The Reef is the latest “Based on a True Story” movie that follows a group of Australian friends who take boat out in the ocean and something bad happens. The movie follows along the same lines as Open Water and several other “shark infested” movies from the past few years. We follow our friends who set out to deliver a yacht to its new owner. Something happens (of course) along the way and the bottom of the boat hits a reef and ends up ripping a hole in it. Decision making plays the key part of the story as they have to decide if they should stay with the boat and wait for a passer by or swim for shore or whatever comes first. You know what happens next, trouble with a fin!

A group of yuppies are stranded out in the middle of the ocean after deciding to abandon their capsized boat with a hungry shark hunting them down.
The first thing that comes to mind is, that the premise is a bit too reminiscent of Open Water. However, The Reef vividly brings to life this atmosphere involving people stuck in what is a seemingly endless nightmare that grows more helpless with each passing moment. The Reef sure is one suspenseful film, but it isn't riveting. It isn't the kind of movie that shakes people to the core. Comparisons to other similar films in this sub-genre is unavoidable. The Reef isn't the type of movie that has any kind of profound effect on its audience like Frozen. However, it is slightly better then the film that it evokes,...

They are forced to choose: stay on board with slim hope of rescue, or swim twelve miles to the nearest island.through shark-infested waters. Those that abandon ship are faced with the race of their lives, for as soon as they enter the water a Great White shark catches their scent and the white-knuckled chase is on! During shooting, Traucki actually shot The Reef in Australia using real sharks. No one was eaten....

Mid-July is going to be a good time for DVD and Blu-ray releases featuring people getting eaten alive. Dinocroc and Supergator take time out between rounds to devour anyone in their path. Native American lycan legends go on the prowl in Maneater and Monster Wolf. Most importantly, the Australian Open Water-ish shark thriller The Reef finally surfaces on American shores.
The people chomping begins on July 12th when Anchor Bay releases the Roger Corman produced, Jim Wynorski directed, Syfy original creature feature Dinocroc vs. Supergator (review here). The late David Carradine makes one of his final appearances in this monstrous smackdown that sees genetically engineered reptilian rivals escaping their confines and chomping their way through a series of scientists, tourists, and bikini babes in Hawaii. The actors chew the scenery almost as much as the monsters.

Image Entertainment will release the shark-infested thriller The Reef on Blu-ray and DVD on July 19 — and it’s based on a true story.
It's woman versus Great White Shark in The Reef.
Directed by Andrew Traucki, the independent film focuses on ship delivery man Luke (Damian Walshe-Howling, Crushed) and four of his friends as they set sail on the beautiful but dangerous waters of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef to deliver a yacht to its new owner. Along the way, their ship is torn open by sharp rocks and begins to sink, leaving the passengers with a terrifying choice: stay on board with slim hope of rescue, or swim 12 miles to the nearest island — through a watery reef filled with sharks. Four years ago, producer Michael Robertson.s company Prodigy Movies released its first feature, survival thriller Black Water, in which a group of tourists is stalked by crocodiles in northern Australia. Andrew Traucki brought a touch of realism to the shark film sub-genre with The Reef, and found himself in uncharted distribution waters.
His first film Black Water starred a dangerous (and very real) crocodile, and his follow up The Reef sees a group of tourists trying to survive the attack of a white shark, but writer/director/producer Andrew Traucki is not afraid to be known as ‘the one who makes movies about lethal animals’.

Aussie shark thriller 'The Reef', helmed by Andrew Traucki, saw it's UK premiere at the Film4 Frightfest All-Night event in London last October and it's already been picked up stateside by Image Entertainment. There's no Us release date just yet though so for the time being you'll just have to gawp at the new batch of stills and a couple of new look one-sheet posters for the flick with bite below. I'm always a little perturbed by the movie's tagline 'Pray That You Drown First', that's just asking for trouble and waiting for a hate-filled critic to use! No, thankfully not that Finding Nemo copy cat (you know, for kids!), without the heart and with some fish being a bit too sexually provocative for my liking, though both films do feature sharks. Australian survival/creature horror The Reef, is new to DVD and it packs a surprising amount of bite. Let’s hope you can get to the Fin-ish in one piece. I’m here all week…
Beautifully shot and pretty beautifully chilling, The Reef is an incredibly engaging triumph of minimalist thrills and the unavoidable empathy an audience feels when something is truly hopeless. It is a film that lives almost entirely on its ability to wring everything out of its concept without going too far beyond the point of no return, for which all the plaudits must fall to director Andrew Traucki, last seen working with swamps in 2007′s creepy Black Water. What is it with...

Shark films. It seems impossible for filmmakers to return to the crystal blue depths without critics and fans drawing comparisons with Spielberg’s fantastic classic thriller, Jaws. The problem here of course is that in most cases there are stark differences between Jaws and whichever other shark film you may be looking at. Budget, script, scope and of course a lack of Spielberg in any new shark attack thriller makes the comparisons relatively unfair.
So for once let’s forget jaws, this’ll have you on the edge of your seat!
Directed by Andrew Traucki, The Reef is an Australian horror/thriller has succeeded where so many other shark films have failed. Bringing together a relatively unknown cast (this side of the hemisphere at least), the film gives us believable characters and even a somewhat plausible story.

The Reef, the latest Australian offering which brings viewers yet more deep-sea scares is set to hit DVD and Blu-ray next week and to celebrate FilmShaft have been sent and exclusive clip featuring interviews with cast and crew from the film in which they share one or two of their own shark stories with us!
Love sharks? Yeah they are pretty cool when all is said and done, but even the most hardened shark fanatic will think twice before going into the water after watching The Reef, a film supposedly based on true events which tells the story of a Great White Shark with a taste for human flesh.
I had the opportunity to watch the film last year and it kept me on the edge of my seat (look out for my review this weekend), but until Monday, for a cheeky look behind the scenes on the shoot, check...

Director: Andrew Traucki. Review: Adam Wing. I hate sharks. I just want to make that clear from the outset. Of all the memorable screen villains created over the years, the mere suggestion of shark bait is enough to see me running – or should that be wallowing? Even Deep Blue Sea, Renny Harlin’s unintentionally hilarious action thriller managed to scare the crap out of me. I hate sharks – it’s as simple as that. Andrew Traucki sticks to what he knows best with his second water based feature, not to be confused with the Freddie Prinze Jr. voiced animated effort of course. That was a whole different kind of scary. The Australian swamps of Black Water are replaced by the Great Barrier Reef, and our hapless victims are stalked not by a killer crocodile, but by a rather impressive white pointer shark. Four backpackers set out on a week’s holiday,...

Momentum have brought sharks right back into the forefront of our minds with their brand new movie coming out in January called ‘The Reef’. It stars Adrienne Pickering, Zoe Naylor, Damian Walshe-Howling, Gyton Grantley, Kieran Darcy-Smith and is written, produced and directed by Andrew Traucki.
Based on a true story, The Reef sees a group of friends go out on a pleasure boat who, after running aground and capsizing are limited on options. Their dingy has sprung a leak, their Sos system only works if a plane flies overhead and they have to decide whether it’s best to stay on the boat or to try and swim to land which is 10 miles away! After choosing to swim to land, we’re taken on a roller-coaster ride which involves the group doing their best to avoid the killer sharks that may be lurking in the Coral Sea of the east coast of Australia.

Stars: Damien Walshe-Howling, Zoe Naylor, Adrienne Pickering, Gyton Grantley, Kieran Darcy-Smith | Written and Directed by Andrew Traucki
Based on a true story, The Reef is the latest entry into the “open water” school of horror that has already brought us films such as Open Water and Adrift. This latest effort comes from Andrew Traucki, the director of Black Water – the Aussie killer croc movie that, like this film, was also based on a true life story.
For four friends, a week sailing on the Great Barrier Reef should have been a dream vacation. But when their boat crashes into the reef and capsizes, the dream turns into a nightmare. Plunged into the icy depths of the ocean, the friends take their chances and attempt swim from the now-useless, and slowly sinking boat, to land. Taking to the open water, the four realise – all too late – that they are not alone…...

According to Prodigy Movies producer Michael Robertson, his company will continue to make genre-based lower budget films even though Road Train failed at the box office.
“Road Train did not perform at the box office and will now go out as a DVD in March next year, but the reason I am pursuing genre-based lower budget storylines is that they do sell overseas, and I have the track record of Black Water, Road Train (aka Road Kill in the United States) and the soon-to-be-released The Reef to show for this,” Robertson told Encore.
Road Train was released in South Australia on October 21. It received positive reviews, but it didn’t succeed at the box office.
“This is a contrary reaction to the film’s achievements overseas as per the sales it has obtained, including the most recent one to Korea at the American Film Market. The 30+ countries that have all...

If you thought that Jaws gave you pause for thought while you were on your holidays then you definitely haven’t heard of The Reef! Starring Damien Walshe-Howling, Zoe Naylor, Adrienne Pickering, Gyton Grantley and Kieran Darcy-Smith, The Reef is an independently financed Australian picture headed to UK DVD in January 2011.
I’m please to say I’ve had the chance to see this film in all of it’s deep blue glory and while you won’t be getting my review until later this year I can quite happily say that I spent the entire time on the edge of my seat. The trailer, which can be seen below, truly does not do this film justice but it does give you a tiny glimpse of what lies under the water in this fantastically put together aquatic thriller. Enjoy!

Some time back, as principal photography was getting started, we told you about an upcoming Australian thriller called The Reef . Andrew ( Black Water ) Traucki directed, utilizing real sharks (!) for the shoot. That said, an official trailer is now live - dissimilar from that sales preview that was posted and yanked from the web earlier this year. Damian Walshe-Howling, Zoe Naylor, Gyton Grantley, Adrienne Pickering and Kieran Darcy-Smith star in the film as four friends who are forced to swim ashore when their boat capsizes in the Great Barrier Reef. There, they are stalked by a 15-foot great white shark.

Aussie shark-fest 'The Reef', based on true events, has gotten itself a new trailer. This is not writer/director Andrew Traucki's first creature feature having previously helmed the man-eating crocodile movie 'Black Water' a few years back. Trying to survive the great white torment will be actors Adrienne Pickering (below), Zoe Naylor, Damian Walshe-Howling, Gyton Grantley and Kieran Darcy-Smith. I did have to giggle at the movie's tagline though: 'Pray That You Drown First'. It seems even the marketing team don't have much faith in this one! Check out the trailer at the link below. 'The Reef' will get it's UK premiere as part of the Film4 Frightfest All-Night event taking place in London's Leicester Square on Saturday 30 October. So if you can stay up till 2:30am when it gets its' screening and have tickets go check it out. If you don't...

Another day another dull looking shark movie. After a slew of shark-related tales over the past years we're about to be hit with the latest of a 'based on true events' man-eater story. The new trailer for Ozzie creature feature 'The Reef', written and directed by Andrew Traucki, has landed and looks as cheap and uninteresting as the last pair of socks I bought from Primark. Think 'Open Water' meets...well something similar. You can check out the trailer below as well as the admittedly creepy one-sheet (which seems to contain a truly over-sized fin compared to the actual shark used in the movie). 'For three British backpackers it seemed like a dream come true. A Week cruising the world's most beautiful coral reef on their own yacht. But when their boat capsizes leaving them stranded on an overturned hull the dream turns into a nightmare.

A teaser trailer for the Australian water survival feature The Reef has been available at the film's website for almost a year now and finally a full length trailer, which shows the characters, is available right here (Quiet). In the clip four friends are put in a desperate situation when their boat capsizes and unfortunately for them the surrounding waters of Australia are home to one of the greatest denizens of the ocean, the great white shark! Have a watch as two couples breath their last, while wondering: "why did I not stay with the boat?"

Fango just spent some time on the set of The Reef, the new film by Andrew Traucki (the Australian filmmaker who co-directed and co-scripted 2007’s exceptional killer-crocodile flick Black Water) and came back with a couple of exclusive pics, which you can see below. Traucki, a longtime surfer who couldn’t stay away from the water if he tried, is once again investigating the theme of large predatory animal interactions with humans, but is wading into much deeper here.

Sharks are probably one of the scariest creatures on the planet. There's just no reasoning with them. You're not a person in their cold black eyes. You, just like everything else in their way, are simply lunch. Hell, depending on your size, maybe even just a snack! It's that very justified fear of these creatures that the filmmakers behind The Reef hope to tap into.
The Reef is Aussie writer/director/producer Andrew (Black Water) Traucki's second feature, and you can keep tabs on his progress via The Reef Blog. He describes the film as "swimming the line between horror and psychological thriller, a terrifying tale of true survival. A tale that for me asks the fascinating questions, What would I do in this situation? How would I react? Would I be a survivor or would I die?"
The film's official site states the film is based on a true story and provides a synopsis.

Fango’s Australian correspondent Michael Helms sent along casting and other details on two new projects getting ready to roll there, both of which showcase nature gone amok. The more horrific of the two is The Reef, the latest from Andrew Traucki, who co-wrote and co-directed (with David Nerlich) the killer-crocodile flick Black Water.
Reteaming Traucki with Black Water producer Michael Robertson, The Reef stars Aussie actors Damian Walshe-Howling, Zoe Naylor, Gyton Grantley, Adrienne Pickering and Kieran Darcy-Smith in the story of a group of friends whose boat capsizes on a jaunt to the Great Barrier Reef. Deciding to attempt a swim to the distant shore, they find themselves being stalked by a great white shark intent on making meals out of them. The $3.5 million (Australian) film is set to begin a five-week shoot October 12 in Queensland’s Hervey Bay; additional live shark footage will be captured in South Australia.
