Robbie Coltrane, who has died aged 72, arrived on television in the 1980s as one of the new breed of “alternative” comedy performers. A decade later, he was making an even greater impact as the flawed criminal psychologist in Cracker. Then, moving into a new century, he was a favourite with younger audiences as Hagrid in the Harry Potter films.
He came to the fore in The Comic Strip Presents satirical films for television alongside other new faces such as Peter Richardson, Adrian Edmondson, Jennifer Saunders and Dawn French.
From the first story, Five Go Mad in Dorset, the spoofs gave Channel 4, newly launched in 1982, the subversive edge it sought in being different from the TV establishment.
Coltrane was very much part of that establishment, but at its gritty, hard-hitting centre, when he was cast as Dr Eddie Fitzgerald – “Fitz” – in Cracker (1993-96), former Brookside writer Jimmy McGovern’s creation...

Ringside Media, the investment arm of Newen-backed indie Ringside Studios, has bought out Lionsgate’s stake in veteran TV executive Steve November’s Further South Productions.
The London and Brighton-based Further South was founded by former Lionsgate executive November, who was previously creative director of the studio’s U.K. TV division. “Possessor” director Brandon Cronenberg will adapt “Crash” author J.G. Ballard’s 2000 thriller novel “Super-Cannes” as a limited TV series.
“Super-Cannes” is set in an ultra-modern high tech business park in the hills above the French Riviera city, famed for its film festival, where a global elite has gathered to form a closed, uber-capitalist and high-tech community.
The rights for the novel, “High-Rise” writer Ballard’s 25th, were optioned by television drama production company Ringside Studios and Andy Starke from Anti-Worlds Film and Television.
Ringside Studios was established in 2020 as a joint venture between producer Gub Neal (“The Fall”) and Newen, the French production and distribution group owned by TF1.
Neal said: “We’re delighted to be involved with Brandon and Andy in adapting such an iconic piece of work. The source material is so rich and the characters so vivid that we are confident it will be an appealing project for both talent and buyers.

The BBC has commissioned a slate of four dramas from first-time TV writers, including a police series starring The Hobbit and Sherlock actor Martin Freeman as a night shift officer in the British city of Liverpool.
The Responder is written by Tony Schumacher, a former police officer who is fulfilling a lifelong ambition to write for the screen. He has been mentored by Accused scribe Jimmy McGovern and been part of the BBC Writers Room emerging writers initiative.
His six-part BBC Two series features Freeman as cop Chris, who works night shifts with his new rookie partner, Rachel. Each episode centers on a different shift, and the series is described as “wildly funny and painfully tragic.” Chris is dealing with a marriage that is breaking down while policing Liverpool’s criminal underbelly, and the show deals with the realities of policing in Britain and the complexities of Freeman’s character.

A reboot of classic British police procedural Bergerac is being developed by Paramount Network International – marking the latter’s first international drama project to emerge since its global expansion.
The series previously starred John Nettles, later known for his role in Midsomer Murders, as a detective on the small island of Jersey. It ran for nine seasons and 87 episodes on the BBC between 1981 and 1991 and was created by Robert Banks Stewart.
Endemol Shine-backed production company Artists Studios is developing the reboot with Westward Studios. It is the latest attempt to bring back the classic character – the BBC had previously attempted to remake the series with Artists Studios back in 2013. Artists Studios’ Gub Neal, who has produced series such as Prime Suspect and The Fall, is lead producer.
The move comes as Viacom ramps up the international rollout of Paramount Network International, under the leadership of Evp Jill Offman.

The Fall producers have defended the show's divisive cliffhanger ending, which was heavily criticised by some TV writers and fans on Twitter on Monday night (June 10).
Fans were left with lots of unanswered questions at the end of series one and the central serial killer case remains unsolved heading into series two, which is unlikely to air any earlier than autumn 2014.
Speaking about the drama - which stars Gillian Anderson and Jamie Dornan - Artists' Studio creative director Gub Neal defended writer Allan Cubitt's decision to not resolve the crime.
"Allan has always been very committed to taking the long view on stories. A critical part of what he's trying to do is change the nature of the way these stories are told. TV cops often live in the world of TV cops. It's a TV rhetoric, not reality," he told Broadcast.
"What we know is that life's not like that.

The London Screenwriters' festival saw differences of opinion on what impact the demise of the Film Council will have
Forget double-dip recessions. With 500 delegates, the first London Screenwriters' festival, held at Regent's College last weekend, was a sell-out. But what did these assorted optimists learn about their prospects? Is the British film industry becalmed in credit-crunch doldrums? Or are fresh winds blowing in? The answer was a resounding: "Yes and no."
Contrasting perspectives came from opposite poles of the industry: keynote speaker Tim Bevan, co-founder of the ever-successful Working Title and head of the doomed UK Film Council, and festival co-organiser Chris Jones, author of The Guerilla (sic) Film Makers Handbook.
Inevitably, Bevan was asked about what might happen when the Film Council is disbanded. According to the culture secretary, Jeremy Hunt, there will actually be more money for development and production than there was before, and Bevan agreed that...

AMC is developing a slate of miniseries with an eye toward following up on the success of its first effort in the genre, Broken Trail.
The Rainbow Media Holdings-owned cable channel is looking to try its hand at a war epic, with projects in consideration from such scribes as Michael Blake (Dances With Wolves), Michael Nankin (Battlestar Galactica) and John Leckley (Spawn).
AMC is looking to have its next miniseries in production by year's end for broadcast in 2008. The goal is to get the audience and acclaim that followed Trail, a Western starring Robert Duvall that was the highest-rated longform program on cable in 2006.
"Viewers really noticed projects of intelligence and high quality, and we are focused on producing only those for AMC," said Rob Sorcher, executive vp programming and production.
Among the projects in development include the Civil War drama Against the Guns of Quantrill, from Blake and executive producer Lou Morheim (The Magnificent Seven); Berlin Mesa, a drama about Nazis attempting to steal nuclear secrets, from Michael Frost Beckner (Spygame) and executive producer John Baldecchi (The Mexican); L-19, a fact-based drama on a German Zeppelin crash during World War I, from William Brookfield (Close Your Eyes) and executive producers Gub Neal and Justin Thompson (Case of Evil); and White Rose, revolving around a youth uprising in Nazi Germany, from Leekley, who would also executive produce.

LONDON -- U.K. independent production company Box Film has sealed a multiterritory deal across Germany, Benelux and Switzerland with Dutch theatrical distributor Moonlight Films for Boudica, the company said Tuesday. The British-based production company is handling sales in-house for the project, which is shooting in Eastern Europe. U.K. television rights to the movie already have been secured by U.K. commercial terrestrial broadcaster ITV Network. The $8 million-budgeted movie details the story of Britain's first warrior queen, who, in the first century A.D., defeated the Roman garrisons in Colchester and London, sacking both cities and coming within a hair's breadth of bringing Nero's Rome to its knees. The film marks the feature directorial debut for Bill Anderson. Starring Alex Kingston (television's ER) in the title role, Hugo Speer (The Full Monty) and Jack Shepherd (Charlotte Gray), Boudica is produced by Matthew Bird, with Box Film chief Gub Neal taking an executive producer credit. Box Film, launched earlier this year by independent TV production company Box TV, was founded by producer Neal and former FilmFour senior business affairs executive Justin Thomson-Glover.
