“Ava,” the striking portrait of director Ava DuVernay that was unveiled today by The Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery, will be viewable as part of its upcoming Portrait of a Nation: 2022 Honorees exhibition opening Nov. 10.
Commissioned along with six other works as part of this year’s class of Portrait of a Nation Award honorees, the piece hails from Kenturah Davis, a California-based artist whose depiction of DuVernay through her stamping technique honors the director’s interest in moving images and writing.
“I am overjoyed to be chosen as a Portrait of a Nation honoree by the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery,” DuVernay says. “To encounter my likeness in those hallowed halls as envisioned by the magnificent Kenturah Davis is a dream that I never knew to dream. On Day 1 of ABC’s Virtu-Fall Presentations, Black-ish stars Anthony Anderson, Tracee Ellis Ross and Laurence Fishburne joined creator Kenya Barris and showrunner Courtney Lilly to tease an upcoming, hour-long special, which will air ahead of the show’s Season 7 premiere.
At the beginning of the panel, the cast and EPs addressed the fact that Black-ish Season 7 was initially scheduled to air mid-season, before being bumped up to Wednesday, October 21.
“Collectively, I think we all felt the show, in years past, has been an amplifier of things to talk about in society, and we felt, at this time in particular, that the show would be unusually but importantly necessary,” Barris said. “We felt we needed to share our opinion with ABC, and we appreciate that they allowed us to have a voice right now, with what’s going on in society.

Kenya Barris has a lot on his plate already with three comedies in the “ish” universe already airing, as well as #BlackAF on Netflix (not to mention his overall deal to create new content with the streamer in general) — so what made him want to deliver a fourth “ish” series in “Old-ish,” starring “Black-ish’s” Laurence Fishburne and Jenifer Lewis?
“Everyone’s been wanting to see Pop and Ruby together because they’re basically together anyway,” Barris said during a virtual panel for “Black-ish’s” upcoming season on Tuesday. “It’s the weirdest divorce I’ve ever seen in my life. And truthfully in real life there is a huge recurrence of second time around in the older demographic…people are living longer and having experiences later in life, and it was just finding something that we felt we could tell a good story [about], that fit with the brand and what we’re doing.

Since we rebooted Alexa's old series Curio we've been focusing on specific movies or themes but this week we want to spotlight a famous artist who is getting another well-earned round of attention at the moment, with big magazine covers celebrating the Black Lives Matter movement for both The New Yorker and Rolling Stone. His name is Kadir Nelson. The 46 year old painter, who's won numerous awards in his career has done album covers, stamps, book covers, magazine illustration, and children's books. He sells limited edition lithographs, prints, and autographed books at his shop but you can also purchase his books at Amazon and other retailers at regular prices if you don't have a big budget for art.
His art focuses on African-American history but he doesn't do much movie-related art. That said he did work on two movies, Steven Spielberg's Amistad (1997) and the animated...

In a new video, artist Kadir Nelson explains how he illustrated the July 2020 cover of Rolling Stone, which arrived on Tuesday accompanied by Jamil Smith’s cover story. This was supposed to be an unbelievably joyful week for Kadir Nelson. The L.A.-based artist, 42, was the subject of a glowing profile on CBS Sunday Morning, which likened his lush paintings of African-American subjects in idealized settings to the works of Norman Rockwell and N.C. Wyeth. The segment coincided with his latest effort, "A Day at the Beach," which graces the cover of the New Yorker's current double-issue. It's a striking oil painting of a handsome African-American dad and his three children enjoying a cloudless day by the shore. But that image took

When Drake released the cover art for his new album, "Nothing Was the Same," it didn't take long before fans decided there was a similarity between the baby pictured on the art and Blue Ivy Carter, daughter of Jay Z and Beyonce. The rapper, real name Aubrey Graham, says it's definitely not the first baby of rap, though.
The baby is actually an artist representation of a young Drake, afro and all, according to MTV. The painting of baby Drake, along with the adult one used as an alternate cover, was done by Kadir Nelson, who has created artwork for Michael Jackson in the past.
"Nothing Was the Same" was originally scheduled for a September 17 release, before Drake pushed the date back until September 24. Though the rapper performed two songs at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards, his most memorable moment was a simple reaction to Miley Cyrus on the show.

Apparently, the Internet has mistaken a baby Drake for Blue Ivy Carter.
Us Weekly reported Wednesday that fans took to Twitter, asking if Blue Ivy is on one of the alternate covers for Drake's new album, "Nothing Was the Same," due out Sept. 24. The artworks, which are oil paintings by artist Kadir Nelson, were revealed on Instagram on Wednesday, Aug. 21. One shows the profile of a young child and the other a profile of Drake, both against a cloudy blue sky. When placed side-by-side they appear to be looking at each other.
Instagram users and tweeters alike began chattering about how much the baby in the portrait resembles Blue Ivy. Some even wondered, "Why is Blue Ivy on Drake's album cover?"

Blue Ivy Carter is pop and hip hop royalty -- but Drake is absolutely not paying homage to Beyonce and Jay Z's little girl on the illustrated cover of his new album, Nothing Was the Same. The "Started from the Bottom" rapper unveiled the art last week; created by artist Kadir Nelson, the image portrays Drake against a cloudy blue sky facing a young African-American child with an adorable afro. Some fans on Twitter half-jokingly wondered why Beyonce's firstborn made an appearance on the cover. "Why is [...]...

Drake has revealed not just one but two album covers for his fresh album "Nothing Was the Same." Illustrator Kadir Nelson penned Drizzy's likeness in child form and adult form for the blue-dominated images. Drake was emotionally blue on the cover of his last album "Take Care." That out there now, the rapper and singer has pushed back the release date for his album by a week: "Nothing Was the Same" will be out Sept. 24 now, not Sept. 17. Just as he revealed his upcoming VMAs performance, last night Drake also tweet-announced an updated release date (September 24) for his upcoming album, Nothing Was the Same, and revealed a set of covers. Illustrated by artist Kadir Nelson, the dual images seem to be inspired by "Started From the Bottom" — a young Drizzy (complete with Afro pick) stares into the face of the grown-up rapper. The cheese factor is certainly high, noted many who took to Twitter to gently rib the cover — comparing it to Brooke Hogan's second album, The Redemption; Toys; the Michael Jackson–Eddie Murphy duet, "Whatzupwitu." The real question here is, who's cuter: Baby Drake or Baby Wayne?...

Kadir Nelson leads MTV News through his tribute to the King of Pop.

It is a testament to the legendary life of Michael Jackson that no matter how big a canvas artist Kadir Nelson used to tell Mj's story — and at 9 feet wide and 4.5 feet tall, he used a pretty big one — he kept running out of room. It seems that Jackson's reign as the King of Pop was just too lengthy, his list of achievements too large and his life too all-encompassing to be summed up in even the most massive of murals.
"Michael's life was so huge I couldn't get it all into the painting," Nelson told MTV News. "So I would take images from throughout his life that were milestones ... images that would resonate with his fans. And even doing that was a challenge."

Kadir Nelson only spoke to Jackson once before the singer's death.

When it came to putting together Michael, the first posthumous album of material from late King of Pop Michael Jackson, everyone was working with half a playbook. The producers of the singer's first studio album since 2001 had to figure out what the notoriously detail-oriented Jackson would want them to do with the grab bag of songs he was working on at the time of his death.
Even the artist behind the album's iconic cover, a Renaissance-painting-like mash-up of iconic images from throughout Jackson's career, was forced to go on his understanding of what Michael would have approved of.
That artist, Kadir Nelson, sat down with MTV News last week to walk us through the thicket of images on the cover and explain how he came to create the visual summary of the pop icon's solo career.

Questions arose about the authenticity of the recordings on Michael Jackson's new album, after the teaser release of his new single, "Breaking News," immediately after it was posted online on November 8th. Some fans didn't think it sounded like Michael, and then even his kids and his own mother claimed some of the tracks were faked.
The official Sony music news release included this bit: "The creative process never stopped for the King of Pop who was always planning for his next album; unbeknownst to many fans around the world Michael Jackson was writing and recording songs continuously everywhere from a friend's home in New Jersey..."
New Jersey? This only made people more suspicious. Then there's the incredible album cover art by painter Kadir Nelson, which includes references, some obvious, some cryptic to just about everything Michael Jackson has been involved with over the course of his astonishing and totally bizarre life.

Beside being accused of not featuring his real voice, Michael Jackson's posthumous album has also contained unauthorized use of Prince's symbol on its cover art. A representative for Prince filed complaint to Sony Music Group and the company subsequently removed it from the artwork.
The picture on the front page of the upcoming CD is an oil painting created by Kadir Nelson in 2009 to "take us on a journey through some key moments and important people in Michael Jackson's life." But Prince's rep told Drfunkenberry.com, "No permission was granted. [So] Sony Entertainment has removed the symbol."
Simply titled "Michael", the album is going to be released Stateside on December 14. The lead single "Breaking News" has just been debuted, narrating the life of the late King of Pop under media scrutiny.

A new album of previously unheard Michael Jackson songs will be released on December 14, the first such release since the pop star died last year, his Sony Music label said on Thursday.Called simply "Michael," the album marks the latest commercial venture by Jackson's estate since the "Thriller" singer succumbed to a fatal overdose of prescription drugs in June 2009, aged 50.But apart from revealing the album's title, regal artwork, and the name of one track, "Breaking News," Sony Music is keeping a firm lid on the project.A spokeswoman declined to say how many tracks were on the album, reveal any other song titles, or indicate the extent of production work that was done after Jackson's death. The secrecy follows an embarrassing debacle last year when "This Is It," a new Jackson single touted as his first posthumous release, turned out to...
