There are other things to do with my day, but I must write this review of Suite Française before the film completely vanishes from my mind. Although this France-set, World War II-era romance is not without pleasures both fleeting and consistent there’s little indication that this story requires a telling, or at least a telling by people with such didactic inclinations. “Watching Michelle Williams and Matthias Schoenaerts romance one another” is a better reason than most others to make a film, so this one would (naturally) have been a lot stronger if that was the central intention.
For whatever it’s worth, this is a work in which well-dressed people walk around well-dressed rooms, and the visual pleasure of that does not go unnoticed. Nor does the early, elegant establishment of stakes: Suite Française starts off free non-battle conflict, introducing us to Lucille (Williams) and Madame Angellier (Kristin Scott Thomas...

Everything from easy-on-the-eye wartime romance to surrealist Czech dough inhalation is on offer this week
There’s something both creakily and comfortingly naff about films such as Suite Française (Entertainment One, 15), polite period melodramas that wear their history like plush epaulettes and remain intractably set in Britain even when they’re not. Saul Dibb’s decoratively glazed, BBC-produced adaptation of Irène Némirovsky’s unfinished bestseller takes place in Nazi-occupied France and plays in choppily accented stretches like ’Allo! ’Allo! minus the jokes. (You keep expecting its strong multinational cast to compromise on a mutual pronunciation of “good moaning.”) Yet it’s as easy to watch as it is easy to mock: there’s a persuasively sincere streak of romanticism to this tale of impossible attraction between a lonely French war bride and a sensitive German soldier that keeps cynicism, if not at bay, on relatively good behaviour. As the lovers in question,...

★★★★☆ Saul Dibb's film adaptation of Suite Française (2014) dramatically compresses the many strands of Irène Némirovsky's incomplete World War II novel, discovered by her daughter after her death and published to great acclaim in 2004. Némirovsky intended to write five parts dealing with the tumult of war but only completed two novellas – she died in Auchwitz in 1942. In the second, Dolce, she created a vivid portrait of a provincial French town, Bussy, through the various reactions of its citizens to the German occupation. In their adaptation, Dibb and co-screenwriter Matt Charman concentrate on Dolce and the love affair between Lucille Angellier (Michelle Williams) and Bruno von Falk (Matthias Schoenaerts).

This handsome adaptation of Irène Némirovsky’s epic novel vividly depicts French rural life under the Nazis
In Nazi-occupied France, the bucolic yet class-riven life of the small town of Bussy is turned upside down by the arrival of refugees from Paris and jackbooted soldiers from Berlin. Horrified at being billeted an officer from the invading army, haughty Madame Angellier (a fearsomely taut Kristin Scott Thomas) and her winsomely hectored daughter-in-law Lucile (Michelle Williams) become the subject of a vicious whispering campaign by the villagers from whom they have extorted high rents for years. In stark contrast to such native hostility, handsome German officer Bruno von Falk (Matthias Schoenaerts) proves a disturbingly charming house guest, playing poignant melodies on Madame Angellier’s lock-and-keyed piano, and discreetly wooing the flustered Lucile about whose soldier-husband little is heard but rumour. Meanwhile, hot-headed Benoît (Sam Riley) treats his landlords as contemptible collaborators as...

Director: Saul Dibb; Screenwriter: Matt Charman, Saul Dibb; Starring: Michelle Williams, Matthias Schoenaerts, Ruth Wilson, Kristin Scott Thomas, Sam Riley; Running time: 107 mins; Certificate: 15
Based on an unfinished novel by Irène Némirovsky, who wrote it shortly prior to her death in Auschwitz, Suite Française transforms an extraordinary story into a profoundly ordinary period drama. Tasking its potent performers with a stiff script and by-rote characterisations, the film feels endlessly in search of a dramatic thread worth paying off.
Lucile (Michelle Williams) is a lonely young woman living with her repressive and chilly mother-in-law (Kristin Scott Thomas) in the French village of Bussy during World War II. We learn through heavy-handed voiceover that her husband is away fighting, leaving her scarcely more emotionally neglected than she was in his company. When the village is occupied by German forces, Lucile is drawn to a sensitive Nazi soldier (Matthias Schoenaerts) who comes to stay in her too-empty home.

An immediate and intimate tale of forbidden romance and other complex emotions and contradictory obligations. This ain’t history but a very human now. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m desperate for stories about women; I’m a sucker for movies about WWII

The story of how Irène Némirovsky’s novel Suite Française became known to the world is amazing. She wrote it as contemporary fiction inspired by the events she was living through — the defeat of France by the Nazis in 1940, and the subsequent German occupation — but then it was lost, packed away unread, until the 1990s, and finally published only in 2004. Némirovsky died before the end of the war, in Auschwitz in 1942, so she never knew how it would all end, and indeed her writing...

Irène Némirovsky's unfinished novel Suite Française, written shortly before her death in Auschwitz in 1942 but not published until 2004, was described by the French newspaper Le Monde as "a masterpiece… ripped from oblivion". It was as if, from beyond the grave, Némirovsky was giving a modern-day readership an intimate eyewitness account, harrowing and ironic, of the experience of the Nazi occupation for the French. She wrote about both good and bad behaviour, heroism and cowardice, in every stratum of French society.

This adaptation of Irène Némirovsky’s acclaimed bestseller about French folk collaborating with the Nazis is flabby, sugary – and passion-free
Like a very solemn Stella Artois commercial, this is a golden-tinted saga of everyday French collaborating folk in the second world war. It is an oddly gruesome adaptation of Irène Némirovsky’s posthumous bestseller, whose complexity and subtleties of differing narrative viewpoint are abandoned in favour of syrupy cliches, droning voiceovers and a worryingly awful lead performance. We’ve got farm workers in caps stealing chickens, ramrod-straight disapproving ladies, glowering French people in the dusty town square, good German soldiers, bad German soldiers – everything but a secret radio in the bedstead.
The novel Suite Française is effectively two-fifths of a projected epic about the occupation, begun during the period itself by Némirovsky, a Catholic convert of Russian-Jewish origin in Paris, whose established literary career was crushed by the Nazis, and...

A new trailer has been released for World War II period film “Suite Française”, based on the novel by Irène Némirovsky and starring Michelle Williams and Matthias Schoenaerts. Directed by Saul Dibb of “The Duchess”, the film is set during the 1940 German occupation of France. It follows Lucile Angellier (Williams), a villager who lives a stifled existence with her controlling mother-in-law while her husband is away, a prisoner of war. When German soldiers begin moving into their village, Lucile meets Bruno von Falk (Schoenaerts) and romance blooms. “Suite Française” also stars Margot Robbie, Kristin Scott Thomas, Sam Riley and [...]

World War II dramas are prime contenders for Oscar consideration. It’s an accepted fact. Yet, The Weinstein Company are steering one of their upcoming titles, Suite Francaise, toward a far less starry showcase. Its world premiere will take place at the American Film Market in Santa Monica this November – and depending on its reception, it may hit Us screens in the new year. Whatever happens, there’s still plenty of buzz surrounding the pic, which looks to contain another compelling performance from Michelle Williams.
Based on the best-selling novel by Irene Nemirovsky, the film is set during the German occupation of France and chronicles a romantic affair between an unlikely couple. Williams takes on the role of a French woman who falls for a Nazi officer (Matthias Schoenaerts) who commandeers charge of her town.
