Monopoly is just a boring family board game for a rainy afternoon, right? Wrong. Actually, Monopoly is much bigger than you probably expect. The history of the game can be traced back around 100 years, with Lizzie Magie’s The Landlord’s Game being its inspiration. Nowadays Monopoly is nothing short of a juggernaut, with keen players even able to take part in tournaments like the U.S. National Championship and the Monopoly World Championships. Here is how Monopoly became one of the biggest game brands in the world, up there with Game of Life.
Monopoly – a brief history
The Landlord’s Game was self-published in 1906 and paved the way for Monopoly to be developed as a top board game of the era. It took until the 1930s until a game bearing the name Monopoly was released, with Parker Brothers having purchased its copyright, as well as the rights to Magie’s patent.
