The Royal RoadAttending the Ann Arbor Film Festival is a bit like stepping into a parallel universe. Here, dialogue and narrative lie on the margins, while abstract animation and ethnographic documentary take center stage. Absent are movie stars, paparazzi, and bidding wars; here, a “big name” is someone like Peggy Ahwesh or Lewis Klahr. It’s as if this one week in March at the historic Michigan Theater, just a couple blocks away from the University of Michigan campus, had been carved out of normal space-time and given over to the love of film as an art.At the Aaff, assumptions about 21st century moviegoing don’t necessarily hold water. Slates of short films dominate the festival’s schedule, and even the occasional feature tends to be paired with a short or two. Digital projection is hardly the default, and the sheer diversity of formats makes each program an object...

"That ball turned into a silver bullet, his arm into a gun." That's how singer Todd Snider romanticized Dock Ellis's 1970 feat of pitching an LSD-fueled no-hitter for the Pittsburgh Pirates, a moment that made him a druggie hero of baseball folklore.
Jeffrey Radice's No No: A Dockumentary celebrates Ellis as outspoken and flamboyant at a time when players of color were often seen but rarely heard; the film views his exploits through this lens, including Ellis's canny dare that led to two black pitchers facing each other for the first time in an All-Star Game.

One of the Broadway greats has passed away.
Broadway great Elaine Stritch has passed away on Thursday morning. She was 89.
Though the five-time Tony nominee is perhaps best known for her stage presence (Bus Stop, Sail Away, Company), her TV and film resume is also quite impressive.
From 2008-2013, she was nominated for an Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series Primetime Emmy for her role as Colleen Donaghy, the mother of Alec Baldwin's character Jack Donaghy on 30 Rock. In 1993, she won an Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series for Law & Order.
She's also appeared in two Woody Allen movies, September (1987) and Small Time Crooks (2000). Her other more recent film credits include Monster In Law (2005), Autumn In New York (2000), Screwed (2000) and Out to Sea (1997).

Independent music, film and video distributor The Orchard has acquired the worldwide rights to acclaimed sports feature "No No: A Dockumentary." Directed and produced by Jeffrey Radice, the documentary premiered at this year's Sundance Film Festival and tells the life story of major league pitcher Dock Ellis, who is most famous for throwing a no-hitter under the influence of LSD. It will be available through The Orchard's documentary imprint Opus Docs. "'No No' is a film that showcases a larger-than-life character, whose spirit, attitude, and fight against racism -- not to mention his excessive drug use -- embodied the Zeitgeist of the 1970s. Well-crafted, unique, fun, and layered, it is a film for everyone, not just baseball fans," said Paul Davidson, the Orchard’s Senior Vice President of Film & TV.

They are both touted as this generation’s most bankable stars having proven their mettle in a short span in the industry. Alia Bhatt and Parineeti Chopra join Karan Johar in the season finale of Koffee with Karan 4. Last week, we had two completely opposite filmmakers talking about the industry and its perceptions and once again this weekend, Karan Johar brings to the couch yet another family. While Anil Kapoor talked about his days and the industry today, Sonam Kapoor was as honest as she always is on this show, in spite of getting into trouble in the earlier season. The episode seems to be the right balance of sweet and spicy, which leaves us to decide for ourselves when the episode airs on Sunday at 9pm on Star World.

2014 is now in full swing, the Sundance Film Festival has closed its doors, and film festivals like South by Southwest and Tribeca are generating more buzz for the year’s noteworthy indie narratives and documentaries. In recent years, documentaries such as Restrepo, Gasland, and Searching For Sugarman went on to become heavyweights. This year’s contenders include topics taken from popular memoirs and biographies, along with subject matter pertaining to youths and youth culture. Below, you’ll find a comprehensive list of Sundance and non-Sundance documentaries to keep an eye out for this year, equipped with official synopsis and trailer when available. 2014 is shaping out to a versatile year in the documentary world, ranging from heavy-handed family dramas such as Tracy Droz Tragos’ and Andrew Droz Palermo’s Rich Hill, to baseball biographies such as Chapman and Maclain Way’s The Battered Bastards of Baseball and Jeff Radice’s No No A Dockumentary,...

In 1970, baseball player Dock Ellis somehow pitched a no-hitter for the Pittsburgh Pirates while out-of-his-mind high on LSD. Along with his generally brash and outspoken demeanor, this act helped solidify Ellis' legendary status both as a great player and all-around fascinating person, and it's his life on and off the baseball field that Austin filmmaker Jeffrey Radice explores in No No: A Dockumentary.
Making its regional premiere at the SXSW Film Festival this month, No No earned high marks from many who saw it at Sundance and should be a highlight for anyone looking to catch all the Texas-based movies featured this year.
Radice was kind enough to answer a few questions via email for Slackerwood about the film and how it came to be. No No: A Dockumentary will have its SXSW premiere on Saturday, March 8 at the Paramount at 11:30 am and screens again the following Sunday, Wednesday...

Sundance's timeline annually clashes with the NFL playoffs', but it was a life spent partly in baseball that gave this year’s festival one of its most captivating stories. The curious case of Dock Ellis’ now-infamous no-hitter for the Pittsburgh Pirates against the San Diego Padres on June 12, 1970, thrown under the influence of LSD, is no stranger to Sundance audiences. James Blagden’s 2010 short “Dock Ellis & The LSD No No” is an amusing and concise encapsulation of the feat, featuring animation set to a public radio interview with Ellis. While Jeffrey Radice’s “No No: A Dockumentary” uses some of those same clips to illustrate the events surrounding that day nearly a half-century ago, those expecting a feature-length breakdown of a single athletic achievement will be pleasantly surprised to instead find a much deeper, fulfilling examination of the life that surrounded it. Much of the effectiveness of "No No" comes...

I have now covered the Sundance Film Festival. While I am a little tired from seeing 3-5 films a day, and getting less sleep than usual, I have a fantastic time. Eric D. Snider and I went in depth with all of the films we saw on our podcast Movie B.S. with Bayer and Snider. Here is a quick list of the films I saw, ranked in order. Films 1-16 are all a 6/10 or better (with Whiplash and The Voices each getting a 10/10). Since a 6/10 is a mild recommendation, I liked 16/22 (.727) films. Again, it was a good time.

Jeffrey Radice graduated from Duke University with a degree in cultural anthropology and started out as a film producer. He came to Sundance with short documentaries in 2003 and 2004 ("The King and Dick" and "LSD A Go Go"). He told Indiewire, "'No No' is my first film, an elegy to Dock Ellis." What it's about: "In 1970, Dock Ellis threw a no-hitter on LSD. His outspoken style courted controversy. Dock’s work out of the spotlight is his real legacy." What it's really about: "It's an intimate portrait of Dock Ellis, and a thorough examination of his claim to have thrown a no-hitter while high on LSD. This film is an honest portrayal of Dock’s rise to stardom, his return to earth after he left the public eye, and his growth and redemption later in life." Biggest challenge? "How to remain true to Dock's story and raising funds to make it so.

There’s no question that vehemently protesting a big screen version of a beloved television series has become so commonplace that it’s now simply a cliché, but when it comes to Sex and the City, it’s not as easy as loudly screaming “No No No” and plugging one’s ears. It’s complicated. It’s messy. It’s stupid. In short, it’s a lot like the show’s very dubious cinematic legacy. HBO’s calling card series spawned six television seasons and two feature films, all of which featured the same cast of leading ladies (Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, Kim Catrall, and Kristin Davis), and the continued use of Michael Patrick King’s talents (King both executive produced and wrote on the series, before moving on to write and direct both feature films, giving them the sort of continuity of theme and emotion that should have made them both great). While the first...

Of the sixteen titles that are listed here there are at least more than half that will be talked about throughout the calendar year up until award season in 2015. It speaks volumes about the quality offerings from American Documentarian filmmakers, but it also says a lot about Sundance programming team David Courier, Caroline Libresco et al. exquisite taste for the form. As is the norm for the Sundance doc-comp, there is plenty of socially conscious films on offer, from Andrew Rossi’s film on the insurmountable rise of student debt, Ivory Tower, to government backed food campaigns that have resulted in massive amounts of American health problems in Stephanie Soechtig’s Fed Up, with plenty of diversity within the program as a whole.

A match ignites in the dark. A trembling woman’s frail features are barely lit by its glow. We see a staircase below her descending into that blackness. The anxiety of the moment can be heard in the heavy breaths taken by our heroine.
The match burns too low and burns her, causing her to drop it, and the light flickers out. As she eases slowly into darkness, trying in vain to light her way with wooden matches, we wonder if some creature that loves the empty shadows will reveal itself... and when.
When the answer jolts you from your comfortable spot in the real world, you remember this is Exactly the kind of movie James Wan has perfected. The slow creeping dread, that anticipation of terror around the hallway corner, a shadow in the distance that stands... not quite right. This is his world, and The Conjuring looks to...

You may remember Brandon Routh as the gentleman cast as the title character in Bryan Singer's attempted revival of the Superman franchise, "Superman Returns." Or, you may not.
One person who does remember Brandon Routh as Superman once upon a time? Brandon Routh. In a NextMovie exclusive — meaning, in a thoroughly fictional, ridiculously dramatized original piece from a snarky writer — we tracked down Routh and asked him to record a running diary as he watched "Man of Steel," the Superman movie starring Henry Cavill, over a few adult beverages.
Here are the results, completely unedited:
(5 minutes before the movie): Barely anyone here, like I thought. Just ol B-Routh and this handy dandy bottle of Glenlivet, and maybe a few sadistic Batman fans getting ready for a "Man of Steel" train wreck on a Friday night. They're cool. We'll all be laughing together soon in our Christian Bale Batman voices.

They say you should never act with children or animals. Apparently, that saying should extend to the red carpet. Especially when you're a two-time Oscar winner getting outshined by the "World's Most Famous Internet Cat," Lil Bub, on the red carpet at Tribeca. Last night, the tiny tabby cat with no teeth and two extra toes was the center of attention at the premiere of his documentary Lil Bub and Friends. The documentary explores why cats like Lil Bub have become so popular on the Internet and visits with other feline favorites including Nyan Cat, Grumpy Cat and Keyboard Cat. On a side note, No No No Cat was asked to appear, but, well, you know what it said. Follow @DerrickDeane !function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if...

Continuing her promotional run for her brand new flick "The Call," Halle Berry chatted with Miami's hit radio station Y100.
During her interview, the stunning 46-year-old discussed everything from her flick to the chances she will take home another Oscar.
When discussing her movie, Halle said, "It was such a page turner when I read it. Like so many twists and turns. I mean just the way the movie starts with what happens to my character in the beginning I thought oh, my god, you kidding me? Where does this poor girl go from here? And so many things that happened that made me think oh god really that happened? Oh no!"
"And then secondly it was a great movie for a woman a great character for a woman. You know there's so many movies that are made that don't really have really empowered women roles that are every day women who do extrodinary things.

After taking a well-earned break to concentrate on their own projects – some successful, like Cheryl’s solo work, and to a lesser degree Nicola’s critically acclaimed solo album and fashionwork, and some less so, like Sarah Harding’s flirtation with “acting” – the girls are back in town.
And it’s rather fitting that the tour – which will probably be the last – begins in Newcastle, home of arguably the Girls’ most famous member, in front of an energetic and loud crowd, filling the Metro Radio Arena will screams of appreciation bordering on manic levels.
In return for their fandom, those in attendance were treated to a highly-glossed greatest hits show, quick in pace and far more polished than the Girls were way back in the early days. They are the finished product now, having honed their skills and their routines over almost a decade, and this...

After months of teasing fans of their comeback, Girls Aloud have finally confirmed they will return to celebrate their tenth anniversary next month. One of the (many) things we hope to be getting is a new, fully comprehensive greatest hits album that includes all 20 of their top ten singles (don't get us started on 'Untouchable'). Ahead of their official announcement later this month, we've listed our ten favourite Girls Aloud singles below: 'No Good Advice' (released 2003. Chart peak: No. 2)
The follow-up to their debut single is often an overlooked gem in their back catalogue. Yes, the tin foil outfits in the video look a little dated, but as a big 'f**k you!' anthem, it's still up there with their best. Rc

This is the greatest thing to yet come of the Kate Upton-Justin Verlander romance.
The story is still not a week old, but we already have our first YouTube parody video, "Upton Girl," set, of course, to the music of Billy Joel's "Uptown Girl." We can only assume that there will be a string of more parody videos to come, culminated with a Justin Verlander-Kate Upton sex tape that will crash the internet.
| Related: Need Proof Upton Is Sexy? |
Anyway, until then, 'Upton Girl' is really, surprisingly good.
Lyrics written and copyrighted by Jimmy Lewis, Touch Em All Productions, Scs, Michigan:

She’s been living in her Upton world
I bet she’s never had an M V P
I bet she’s never met one like J.V.

A few days ago, Sound on Sight’s Michael Ryan posted “Why Kathryn Bigelow Should Direct Captain America 2” (Sos 3/2/12). In a wonderfully deft essay (take a bow, Michael), he parsed the comic book history of the Captain America character and saw, in the superhero’s 1960s resurrection, some of the same themes of dislocation, psychological trauma, and alienation which course through Kathryn Bigelow’s Oscar-winning Iraq War story, The Hurt Locker (2008). But among the comments the piece elicited was this one from “Anonymous”: “No No she needs to stay away from this movie (sic).”
Michael requested Anonymous to expand on that sentiment, and I, rather presumptuously, jumped in since I suspected I initially shared Anonymous’ reaction: that Oscar-winning directors of heavyweight material like The Hurt Locker don’t make comic book movies.
But then I kept mulling over Michael’s piece. I suppose a certain literary strata might snicker...

Blair and Dan turn up the heat, Ivy hits the jackpot and Georgina resigns as Gossip Girl on the Feb. 27 episode. Unfortunately for our beloved Chuck (Ed Westwick) and Blair (Leighton Meester), love does not conquer all -- at least for right now. Blair confessed on the Feb. 27 episode to Chuck that she still loves him, but is not in love with him. But only time will tell if Blair's feelings for Dan (Penn Badgley) will forever outweigh her love for Chuck. It all started when Chuck selfishly sent a tip to Gossip Girl revealing that Dan was the one who sent the video of Blair confessing her love to Chuck before the wedding. The tip got into the hands of Georgina's husband because she left him responsible for the site, who revealed that Chuck sent the tip. Obviously, a huge gossip girl No No. Blair of course was upset with both Dan and Chuck,...

It’s National Margarita Day and today we’re mixing our margaritas with Don Julio tequila. If your a fan of Justified on FX, we’ve also got one particular tequila that would delight Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant) and Boyd Crowder (Walton Goggins).
The Don Julio Blanco and Reposado tequilas are two entry level tequilas that offer a light, smooth taste. Similar to Patron Silver, the Blanco is not aged – meaning it’s made and bottled immediately. The Blanco has a light floral smell thanks to the 100% agave. Hints of pepper and citrus fruits (most noticeably lime) make this an ideal starting drink to go with your favorite tapas.
This Blanco is crisp enough to drink neat, but since it is Margarita day, you can mix it with Grand Marnier to make a Margarita Legendario. Please please Do Not use any ready made margarita mix. It will wash away the subtle beauty of this drink.

A report published this week suggests films showing smoking should automatically be classified 18
The big story
This week a report published by the medical journal Thorax recommended that all films including a scene in which a character smokes should automatically be classified as 18, regardless of any other content.
The report, produced by the UK Centre for Tobacco Contol Studies, was compiled from a survey of 5,000 teenagers who were asked if they had seen 50 films randomly selected from 366 box-office hits between 2001 and 2005. When the viewing preferences of the adolescents were compared to their smoking habits it was found that those exposed to puff-heavy plotlines were 73% more likely to have tried a cigarette and nearly 50% more likely to take up smoking in the longer term.
"More than half the films shown in the UK that contain smoking are rated 15 or below, so children and young teenagers are clearly exposed," said Dr Andrea...

Apurva Asrani writes about how the movie going experience is a lamentable affair. Cheap content & expensive movie tickets are a bad combination he says…
Last weekend I battled April showers and a waterlogged Bangalore to reach a multiplex playing a much hyped Bollywood release. With petrol prices at Rs.66 a litre, I filled a modest quarter tank at Rs 500 and pulled a parking coupon at the mall worth Rs 50. My date, who watches every Bollywood release religiously waited anxiously by the box office window. To our delight, the cinema was hardly crowded and I learned from the cashier that I could pick any two seats at the back of the hall. But my joy was short-lived and I almost choked when he printed the receipt for my tickets; I was asked to pay a whopping Rs 700!

Sox owner John Henry and his wife Linda have decided to back Lucky Them, an indie about a music writer searching for her ex-boyfriend. She's on assignment but willing to track him down for the story, whatever lingering hard feelings might still be there. The picture was being produced by the late great Paul Newman, but after his death, longtime beloved wife Joanne Woodward stepped in. She.s already tapped Alec Baldwin, Marisa Tomei, Thomas Haden Church and Allison Janney to star, and production should begin before the year.s end. No word on who might play what, but once principal photography begins, these details should emerge. Almost one hundred years ago, former Boston Red Sox owner Harry Frazee sold baseball legend Babe Ruth to the hated Yankees to finance a Broadway play called My Lady Friends or No No Nanette, depending on which of the many urban legends you...

As we get further away from their peak, doesn't it seem like Destiny's Child should be considered among the greatest R&B acts of all time? In less than a decade together, they produced four albums with four chart-topping hits, moved nearly 50 million units and — perhaps most importantly — influenced an entire generation of R&B stars. But before the solo albums, big-ticket videos, sold out tours and chart dominance, they had to start somewhere, and on this day in 1998, Destiny's Child dropped their self-titled debut album.
The group began when the members were just teenagers. Originally called Girls' Tyme, the group had as many as six members when they first started performing and attracting national attention from producers and record moguls. When the group finally got serious and focused on producing their first album, they changed their name to Destiny's Child (a reference to a passage in the Book of...

Part of the beauty of language comes in the knowledge that there are always combinations of words that no human has ever thought to put together before. For example, in the case of this Fox News interview with author, Nobel Laureate, and Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel, Fox has chosen to describe him as a “Holocaust Winner”: Oops! I’ll assume that was an honest mistake on “Nobel Prize Winner,” and that Fox didn’t actually believe that was a term, and that Wiesel didn’t arrive to the studio and demand “No No, I Won the Holocaust! You better put that under my name.” So, great job, everyone. Video of the ever-so-slightly insensitive Chyron after the jump: (via Outside The Beltway)...
