I’ve always enjoyed the Paranormal Activity franchise. Obviously, the likes of Friday the 13th, A Nightmare On Elm Street, Halloween, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Scream are more popular with horror fans. But even franchises such as Saw and Hellraiser are talked about more than the Paranormal Activity movies. And this is a shame because on the quality of films alone, Paranormal Activity is right at the top of the pile and there’s been no bigger found footage movie since The Blair Witch Project. It was safe to say that I was looking forward to Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin.

At the movies, I don’t scare easily, but the “Paranormal Activity” films have usually found a way to get under my skin, at least for a few moments. They’ve been coming out since 2007, and in all that time they’ve turned into their own genre, with its own tropes and shivers. But the forces behind the series — led by the independent horror mogul Jason Blum, who “Paranormal Activity” first put on the map —must have realized, around the time of “Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension” (2015), that the series was starting to run on fumes. It had become a fear franchise of diminishing returns (creatively and at the box office), and that’s why “The Ghost Dimension” was presented as the final film in the series.
You knew they couldn’t stick to that. But “Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin,” which is the seventh “Paranormal Activity” film and the first in six years,...

It’s been a while since we last had a Paranormal Activity released to help usher in the Halloween season (six years to be exact), but William Eubanks’ Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin officially arrives on Paramount Plus this weekend, and the script from Christopher Landon does an admirable job of finding new narrative terrain to traverse for this latest entry in the series that genuinely made me excited as a long-time Paranormal Activity fan. Next of Kin doesn’t necessarily follow the tried and true formula that established Paranormal Activity as this huge moment in modern pop culture, but I think breaking out of that mold here is what helps make this latest Pa film stand out a bit, as this new direction breathes some much needed new life into the franchise as a whole, and makes me eager for another film in the future if Next of Kin does well enough.

Editor’s note: The following review contains spoilers for “Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin.”
Is it problematic to admit that an overnight stay in an Amish country farmhouse seems ripe for a horror movie setting? Without revealing too much about the plot of “Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin” off the bat, the seventh and latest chapter in the mega-hit horror franchise manages to alleviate that particular stickiness with a last-minute twist. Before the whole devil-worshipping-cult stuff happens, the movie is fairly respectful of Amish cultural practices, even if it uses them as ornamentation.
Keeping in line with previous “Paranormal Activity” entries, “Next of Kin” stays true to its found footage roots with a funny but workable indie documentary premise. The result is . Like most studio horror movies these days, it looks a lot better than it should, and slaps a bit less.

Paramount Pictures and Blumhouse have released the first official trailer for “Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin,” the seventh installment in the long-enduring found footage franchise. Released in 2007, the original “Paranormal Activity” effectively launched Jason Blum’s horror studio and revitalized the trend of found footage genre films that exploded over the following decade. This latest iteration reboots the franchise while also capitalizing on more recent genre trends, including its period farmhouse settings (Robert Eggers’ “The Witch”).
While plot details have been kept tightly under wraps until now, the trailer offers plenty to parse about what Blumhouse has dubbed a “rebirth” of the franchise. The film follows an adopted young woman who goes in search of her biological parents, bringing a friend along to film. The search leads her to an Amish community, where she is initially welcomed with open arms. Things quickly begin to devolve as they notice disturbing forces in the community,...

Bryan Bertino gained widespread acclaim with his debut feature The Strangers. However, neither of his following films, Mockingbird and The Monster found the same reception. The Dark and the Wicked sees him pulling out all the stops to try and rebuild his reputation. Not having been a huge fan of his previous films, I might not be the right person to ask. But if this film doesn’t put him back on the map I don’t know what will.
Louise and her brother Michael can’t remember when they last visited their parent’s farm. But they’re going back now. Their father (Michael Zagst) is dying and doesn’t have much time left. Their mother (Julie Oliver-Touchstone; Bounded by Evil) tells them not to.

The customary, adrenaline-juiced montage of football prep and clash comes fast, furious and surprisingly early in the football melodrama “Safety,” streaming on Disney Plus starting Dec. 11. There’s a reason for the hurry, hurry, hurry. Turns out, college ball isn’t the most important goal of this heart-tugger, directed by Reginald Hudlin and written by Nick Santora. At least, not in typical gridiron fashion. Not that the college team’s boosters will have cause to belly ache: The screen is awash with their beloved tiger mascot’s paw print and inundated with waves of Clemson orange.
Jay Reeves — in what should be a boost to his nascent career — appeals as the promising football frosh Ray McELrathBey. When Ray arrives at Clemson University in South Carolina, he already faces daunting demands as an earnest student and new recruit in a storied program. And he quickly gets on the wrong side of...

No matter how staunch your atheism, there still exists a surefire way to get you believing in God. It’s not hearing His voice or seeing His work, though. Those can easily be laughed away or chalked up to coincidence. God is an abstract catchall in which His faithful are conditioned to place their faith. They rely on Him as their savior while atheists rely on themselves. His deeds are inconsequential to those recognizing how “good” can always be explained by their own actions first. It’s therefore only when darkness creeps in that we question the validity of our behavior since reason no longer applies. Grace makes us smile. Miracles give us time. God lets us create. It’s destruction that conversely gives pause because loss has no concrete answers.
How then does a life-long atheist like Louise (Marin Ireland) and Michael’s (Michael Abbott Jr.) mother (Julie Oliver-Touchstone) become a believer in God?...

"What if she saw something... Out there?" Rlje Films & Shudder have released an official trailer for The Dark and The Wicked, the latest horror film from filmmaker Bryan Bertino, known for his horror films The Strangers and The Monster previously. This is premiering at the Fantasia Film Festival this month, and will be available to watch on VOD later this fall. On a secluded farm in a nondescript rural town, a man is slowly dying. His family gathers to mourn, and soon a darkness grows, marked by waking nightmares and a growing sense that something evil is taking over the family. Marin Ireland stars in this, along with Michael Abbott Jr., Xander Berkeley, Lynn Andrews, Julie Oliver-Touchstone, and Tom Nowicki. This starts out like any other small town supernatural thriller, but gets seriously scary as more is revealed. What in the hell is out there?! Here's the ...

However, Mark finds out that keeping him and his brother together is going to be harder than it looks. They must rely on each other and a gruff stranger, a retired military veteran named Stan, seeking his own redemption, in an effort to keep their family from being torn apart and the truth from being discovered.

The Ganieres are producing the pic via their Rio Vista Universal label with a plan to put it through the festival circuit.
Roberts is repped by Peter Young Sovereign Talent Group; Jackson by Stw Talent; Christian Ganiere by Mavrick Artists Agency and Transcend Talent Management; Nowicki by Alliance Talent Group; Hyman by A3 Artists and Luber Rocklin.
