*full disclosure: a DVD screener of this film was provided by Phase 4 Films. Director/writer: Joseph O'Brien. Cast: David Hayter, Maria del Mar, Casey Hudecki and Frank Moore. Devil's Mile is the first feature film from writer Joseph O'Brien (Fresh Meat) as director. Both, Devil's Mile and Fresh Meat (2012) blend genres, with this one going for more mystery and horror, over comedy. Devil's Mile is the second film this reviewer has seen, recently, which deals with a circular curse. Characters go in circles, with no obvious way out of a complex trap. Still, one character manages to square off with Satan, late in the picture. Earlier, O'Brien brings some Japanese horror influences to the film as seen in the antagonist's awkward movements and sounds. Pacing issues slow down the middle portions of the film, while lighting effects amplify the horror elements. Devil's Mile is a slow-burning indie production that offers a mostly entertaining time.

The Canadian horror flick, The Devil's Mile, had its World Premiere at Fantasia Saturday night. It is the feature debut of long-time screenwriter and Rue Morgue magazine contributor Joseph O'Brien. Three kidnappers, Toby, Cally and Jackie, take a detour to deliver their hostages - two teenage girls - to their powerful employer, Mr. Arkadi. The trip is taking longer than they expected and a couple of complications with the kidnappings only escalate the frustrations everyone feels. Then one of the girls is killed during an escape attempt and an easy kidnapping job turns into a white-knuckled ride into horror and fear. Down The Devil's Mile. Joseph O'Brien's feature debut is an entertaining crime-horror with splashes of Lovecraftian and J-horror tropes. And while one may wonder how on...

Forget Route 666. The Devil’s Mile is an even more evil stretch of road in this new horror thriller starring David Hayter and directed by Joseph O’Brien, with whom we recently had a chance to chat about the film.
Devil's Mile follows a trio of kidnappers who take an ill-advised detour (is there any other kind?) en route to deliver their hostages – a pair of teenage girls - to their mysterious employer. When one of the girls dies along the way, the trio’s slowly-boiling mistrust explodes into chaos.
But what they thought was their worst day ever is only beginning as they are engulfed by the hellish forces that haunt the road - a road they may never escape.
Dread Central: This is one of the few indie horror movies that really lives up to the promo material. I'm curious to know how much the story evolved...

Question: What does Metal Gear Solid's lead character Solid Snake have in common with Watchmen and the first two X-Men films? That's a real head scratcher, isn't it? The answer is David Hayter.
Not only does this renaissance man provide the distinctive voice for Solid Snake but he also wrote the screenplay for Watchmen and both X-Men films mentioned above. That alone is a pretty nice resume, considering the successes of the films and the fact that Hayter has voiced Solid Snake in about a dozen video games. However, Hayter also has a love of acting. And he'll get a chance to display his chops in the upcoming chiller The Devil's Mile.
Screenwriter Joseph O'Brien will be taking on the role of director for the film, helming his first feature. Maria Del Mar and Casey Hudecki co-star. Research has shown neither Del Mar or Hudecki have voiced any video game characters,...

You will know of our love for Canadian filmmaker Rodrigo Gudino. You will also know that his first foray into feature film making will be a remake of the 1972 splat-ghetti western Cut Throats Nine, penned together with another local boy Joseph O'Brien. He already has a great cast forming with Harvey Keitel, Mads Mikkelsen, and Canadian Quebecois actor Roy Dupuis signed on.
Rodrigo sat down with Opium and answered a couple questions about his upcoming film...
Why "Cut Throats Nine"? Because it has an amazing story at its core and yet it is a movie that is far from perfect. I always referred to it as a tarnished gem. When I first saw the original I also saw a lot of potential to expand on themes that I thought were bigger than a cult movie, themes having to do with human evil and violence. I guess I see the remake...

Rue Morgue Cinema and Someone at the Door Productions are spearheading this endeavor, a remake of the Spanish/Italian grindhouse western Condenados a vivir . Toplining the project is star Harvey Keitel ( Bad Lieutenant , From Dusk Till Dawn ), Mads Mikkelsen ( Casino Royale ) and Roy Dupuis ( La Femme Nikita ). Hell of a trio. Gudiño scripted the remake with Joseph O'Brien ( RoboCop: Prime Directives ) which, in turn, is based on a story by the original film's helmer Joaquin Romero Marchent and co-writer Santiago Moncada.
