Director David Fincher has a couple shows in development with HBO, and we have some information about them to share with you.
The first is a noir-style crime drama that he’s been developing with James Ellroy, the man behind L.A. Confidential and The Black Dahlia. The series is based on a real life private eye named Fred Otash. Jack Nicholson’s character in Chinatown is partially based on this guy, and a fictionalized version of him has been featured in a couple of Ellroy’s novels. Deadline reports that the series will be called Shakedown, and they offer the following plot information:
“Shakedown, now in development, is set in the tabloid world and the underbelly of Los Angeles in the 1950s and centers on a real-life private detective. It is inspired by the life of legendary 1050s Hollywood vice cop-turned-private eye Fred Otash.”

In September we learned David Fincher would helm the entire first season of HBO's upcoming series "Utopia", and in addition to that we have previously been made aware of two other untitled television projects from the Gone Girl director: the first a 1950s-set crime-noir series Fincher was developing with writer James Ellroy (L.A. Confidential), and the second a series about "music videos in the 1980s and the crew members who worked on them." Yesterday both untitled projects were officially titled, and we learned a few other small details about each. The Fincher-Ellroy noir series is called "Shakedown", and it centers on a private detective working in the murky underbelly of Los Angeles in the 1950s. The project was previously in development at FX in 2012, and is inspired by the career of real-life private eye Fred Otash, about whom Ellroy also based his fictional novella "Shakedown", though the HBO...

HBO has closed deals for a noir drama series project entitled "Shakedown" from "Gone Girl" director David Fincher and "L.A. Confidential" writer James Ellroy.
Inspired by the story of vice cop turned P.I. Fred Otash, the series will be set in the tabloid world and the underbelly of Los Angeles in the 1950s. The project was originally developed at FX.
Ellroy penned a 2012 novella of the same name about a fictionalized version of Otash, but this will be an original drama project and not an adaptation. Fincher and Ellroy are executive producing alongside Joshua Donen, Clark Peterson, and Steven Hoban.
This marks Fincher's second project for HBO, the other being an adaptation of cult British series "Utopia" which is still in development.

The cast of Joel and Ethan Coen’s next movie continues to get more and more impressive, with Channing Tatum, Tilda Swinton and Ralph Fiennes all set to join George Clooney and Josh Brolin in Hail, Caesar.
The Coen Brothers’ latest big screen caper is described as being set in the 1950s and focusing on a “fixer” who worked for the studios to protect the stars of the day (think Ray Donovan).
The lead character will be Eddie Mannix, a role which has been compared to the real-life Fred Otash, a private investigator who worked for Confidential magazine and was the muckraker of the time using wiretaps to spy on movie stars and gather dirt. Otash was a former lifeguard who became a cop, lost his job as a cop and became a private eye who wiretapped.
Channing Tatum’s (22 Jump Street) role is apparently as a Gene Kelly-type star,...

Universal Pictures have announced today that they will distribute the next movie from the Coen brothers (Hail, Caesar), making it the eighth collaboration between the trio.
However, that’s not the most exciting reveal to come out of the announcement as it has been confirmed that Josh Brolin will reteam with Joel and Ethan Coen after their last collaboration, No Country for Old Men. He will also be joined by previously rumoured cast member George Clooney.
Hail, Caesar will be directed by the Coen Brothers from their own original screenplay, and they will also produce the movie alongside Eric Fellner and Tim Bevan of Working Title Films.
So, what’s Hail, Caesar about exactly?
Well, it has recently been described as being set in the 1950s and focusing on a “fixer” who worked for the studios to protect the stars of the day (think Ray Donovan). The lead character will be Eddie Mannix,...

Following on from last week's news that Josh Brolin has provided the vocals for galactic threat Thanos in Guardians Of The Galaxy comes news that he’s set to go in a very different direction for another future project. He’s signed on to reunite with Joel and Ethan Coen for their next film, Hail Caesar!.Brolin will join another Coen veteran, George Clooney, for the film, which is reportedly chronicling the behind-the-Hollywood-scenes wrangling of Eddie Mannix, a fixer in the employ of the studios who works to protect the reputations of their stars in the 1950s. It’s a comedy apparently based on the work of real-life private eye Fred Otash, a lifeguard-turned-cop who was fired from the force and turned to a life of wiretapping and investigation for the big film companies of the time.It was his responsibility to control and manage the images of the stars,...

Joel and Ethan Coen are in the process of developing their next film project called Hail Caesar. I'm a big fan of their work, and this new project of theirs sounds like it's going to be great. According to Deadline, it’s about "a fixer in Hollywood circa 1950s who works for the studios to protect the stars of the day." The report goes into more detail saying,
"The comical yarn centers on a man named Eddie Mannix who sounds a lot like the Fred Otash of his day — the famed 1950s private investigator who worked for Confidential magazine and was the muckraker of the time using wiretaps to spy on movie stars and gather dirt. Otash was a former lifeguard who became a cop, then helped operate a call girl ring and lost his job as a cop and became a private eye who wiretapped. The project is being put together now.

Having scored one of their bigger critical hits with Inside Llewyn Davis, filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen are sticking in a period milieu for their next project. According to Deadline, the brothers are setting up Hail Caesar, which, despite the title, will not be set in Roman times.Instead, it’ll chronicle the behind-the-Hollywood-scenes wrangling of Eddie Mannix, a fixer in the employ of the studios who works to protect the reputations of their stars in the 1950s. It's not particularly a new idea that the Coen brothers' next will be a project titled "Hail Caesar," as Deadline is claiming "exclusively." But we haven't written about it around these parts yet, so let's do that… I'm actually coming off a Coen binge in recent months. After what was one of the filmmaker siblings' absolute greatest achievements, "Inside Llewyn Davis," I felt a desire to dig back through the catalogue. A number of their films I had not actually seen in some time, so it was good to explore them again. These guys simply remain on another level, and it started right out of the gate with "Blood Simple" in 1985. "Hail Caesar" will tell the story of a Hollywood fixer in the 1950s who works for the studios and protects the stars. So immediately, there is a whiff of "Barton Fink" here, the Coens' masterful, esoteric Palme d'Or winner...

Before the Coen brothers even made True Grit there was talk of them directing Hail Caesar and it seems the time has finally come for the industry-driven comedy. Deadline reports the film, centering on a "fixer" in Hollywood, circa 1950s, working for the studios to protect the stars of the day, will be the brothers' next film. The story centers on a man named Eddie Mannix, similar to Hollywood police officer and private investigator Fred Otash who worked for Confidential magazine, using wiretaps to spy on movie stars and gather dirt. Otash was a former lifeguard who became a cop, then helped operate a call girl ring and lost his job as a cop and became a private eye who wiretapped. Of course, there is also the possibility of the lead character being based on the MGM general manager and vice-president, who holds a connection with the death of "Adventures of Superman...
