After taking a look back at House II: The Second Story (a favorite of mine since childhood), House of 1000 Corpses (which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year), the awesomeness of Tales from the Crypt Presents: Demon Knight, the leg smashing in the Stephen King adaptation Misery, and three separate moments from John Carpenter’s Big Trouble in Little China, JoBlo’s own Lance Vlcek is continuing his The Best Scene video series with a look at a scene from an entry in my favorite horror franchise, Friday the 13th. The film Lance is talking about today is Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood (watch it Here), and the section he’s focusing on is the entire climactic sequence in which iconic slasher Jason Voorhees gets knocked around by the telekinetic abilities of heroine Tina. You can hear all about it in the video embedded above!

The 1986 horror comedy House, directed by Steve Miner from a screenplay by Ethan Wiley (based on a story by Fred Dekker), has a solid cult following to this day. The 1987 standalone sequel House II: The Second Story (watch it Here), which was written and directed by Wiley (again from a story by Dekker), has a less positive reputation than its predecessor. But there are fans out there who enjoy House II even more than the first House – and I happen to be one of those fans. So I’m very happy to see that JoBlo’s own Lance Vlcek has decided to celebrate House II: The Second Story, which has been a favorite of mine since childhood, with a new video that digs into The Best Scene in the movie! You can check it out in the embed above.

I’m never quite sure with Haunted House attractions movies. The attractions themselves have never really interested me despite being a huge horror fan, so maybe that’s part of the reason. But they also always seem so formulaic, so I am happy to report that Autumn Road at least tries to do things a bit different with the idea.
The disappearance of a young girl effects the local town and in particular two twins who run a, you’ve guessed it, haunted house attraction, and an aspiring actress who soon becomes friends with them. The story isn’t centred on the haunted house attraction and that’s definitely a good thing, as when it does show up properly it’s towards the end of the movie and it feels like something fresh. If...

We should go ahead and rename December 12th “Arrow Video Day,” because the fine fiends over there have a ton of titles coming out this Tuesday, including Special Edition sets for The Premonition and Malatesta’s Carnival of Blood, and they’ve also put together standalone special edition Blu-rays for both House and House II: The Second Story. Severin Films is resurrecting Asylum this Tuesday, and fans can finally get their hands on the latest season of Game of Thrones, as well as a box set featuring every episode from all seven seasons.
Other notable releases for December 12th include K-Shop, Once Upon A Time at Christmas, Brackenmore, The Snake Woman, Beware the Lake, and Hollow Creek.

This past weekend I traveled up to the Northeast United States to check out Salem Horror Fest, a brand new horror festival whose mission is “to examine the themes of Fear and the American Experience within the horror genre.” With programming from September 21st–October 15th, Salem Horror Fest has featured film screenings and various live shows that examine horror in the context of significant American issues including race, gender, and sexuality. It looks to be having a hell of an inaugural year and based on my experience, I’d be very surprised if it didn’t come back again next year.
At the “Women with Guts” event on Saturday, we sat down for a screening of Friday the 13th Part VII – The New Blood (you might be aware that I’m rather fond of this film) and afterwards, I was lucky enough to sit down for a conversation with...

[Editor's Note: A version of this retrospective originally appeared in the September 2014 issue of Deadly Magazine.] With House II: The Second Story, the vastly underrated sequel written and directed by Ethan Wiley (who also wrote the screenplay for the original House), New World Pictures introduced audiences to a whole new world filled with unexpected frights and adventures with an Old West twist. The sequel was released in late August of 1987 and took a decidedly left turn away from the more straightforward house of horrors style seen in Steve Miner’s original film, instead favoring a tone that was much more light-hearted, fun-spirited, and far more family friendly.
For the uninitiated, House II follows a young man named Jesse (Arye Gross), who inherits a strange house from the parents who gave him up for adoption when he was just an infant. As he begins to settle into his new dwelling with the help of his girlfriend, Kate (Lar Park Lincoln), his best pal, Charlie (Jonathan Stark), and Charlie’s aspiring musician girlfriend,...

Growing up, I was a big fan of both House and House II: The Second Story, so as you can imagine, Arrow Video’s recent House: Two Stories Blu-ray collection was right up my proverbial alley. Both films look better here than they did on DVD (which is how I’ve been viewing them for years now), the new retrospective featurettes do a great job of diving deep into both movies, and the other supplemental materials included are a welcome blast from the past. For fans who are on the fence about adding House: Two Stories to your home media collections, I can emphatically say this set is well worth the investment.
In House (1986), we meet famed writer Roger Cobb (William Katt), a Vietnam vet with a slumping career and a marriage that has hit the skids after his son disappeared while visiting Roger’s aunt Elizabeth in her gothic abode one fateful day.

The "Friday the 13th" franchise's crop of Final Girls are known for their keen survival instincts onscreen, but the careers of the actresses who played them? Not quite as impressive. When was the last time you heard the name "Amy Steel"? Dana Kimmell? Melanie Kinnaman? In celebration of Friday the 13th, here's our brief rundown of the post-"F13" careers of every Final Girl in the (original) franchise, from Adrienne King to Lexa Doig. "Friday the 13th" (1980) Adrienne King (Alice Hardy) After briefly reprising her role in the film's 1981 sequel, King became the victim of a stalker (the man ultimately pulled a gun on her). Shaken by the experience, she didn't return to acting until the 2010 low-budget horror/sci-fi film "Psychic Experiment." "Friday the 13th Part 2" (1981) Amy Steel (Ginny) Steel actually has two claims to fame in the horror genre, as she also starred in the 1986 pseudo-slasher "April Fool's Day.

One of House II: The Second Story’s taglines was “It’s getting weirder!”, although if you caught Steve Miner’s original film expectations should have been high that House II would be as frenetic and chaotic. But Ethan Wiley’s sequel does nothing with the first film, instead branching off of the notion that old houses have crazy secrets and running with it into western sub-genre terrain. Because House already paved the way for Wiley do off-the-wall shit, House II takes things even further – both with the zany storyline and with the comedy, which was always apparent in the first film but much bleaker than the slapstick here.
The Second Story starts with a rainy night, with a couple trying to get their child out of a house before a cowboy-hat wearing zombie shoots them up. And then it jumps years into the future, when Jesse (Arye Gross) finally...

Horny camp counselors around the world, beware! Jason Voorhees is coming to television. According to Deadline, Friday the 13th producer Sean S. Cunningham has inked a deal to develop an hour-long show based around everybody’s favorite hockey mask-clad machete wielder.

The Tommy Jarvis “trilogy” of Friday the 13th movies is among the franchise’s most popular. When looking at The Final Chapter, A New Beginning, and Jason Lives, it’s clear that we’re talking about three very different slasher movies—each with its own style.
They utilize the Tommy Jarvis protagonist in three very different ways, and there isn’t a massive character arc that strings them together, but they lend an air of continuity to a series that rarely bothered to have any.
Why does Tommy remain a consistent fan favorite? Examining the popular decisions of other franchises may help bring the issue into focus.
Surely we can agree that Dr. Loomis lends weight to the Halloween series as the boogeyman’s foil. He’s what every villain’s nemesis should be: resourceful, determined, and flawed. It’s this combination that I would argue makes him an enduring character.

Last year we ran a schedule of every TV/Cable network schedule we could find that could be construed as Horror or Halloween related for the month of October. Let’s just say it proved useful for our readers and even for our staff when they were looking to find something to watch, wanted to program their DVR’s or didn’t want to miss out on some great “live” Horror. Isn’t there something about having a movie fed to you on TV as opposed to watching it on Blu-ray or DVD or streaming? We may not like commercials, but the randomness that you can associate with a TV program itinerary is novel. It removes a little bit of control from the audience who is all to concerned with being in control these days (just look at the reasons behind publishing a piece like this).

When the current theatrical reboot (a sequel and toothless TV remake had already come and gone) of Carrie was announced, there was a lot of teeth gnashing and cries of "leave the classics alone!," mostly by me. But as details began to leak out, the prospect became more intriguing. Gay director Kimberly Pierce gave us the masterpiece Boys Don't Cry, and the fabulous Julianne Moore signed up to play Carrie's psychotic fanatical mother. Chloe Moretz doesn't look anything like Stephen King's Carrie, but then neither did Sissy Spacek, so I'm willing to give her the benefit of the doubt.
Carrie was supposed to open in March, but the studio has pushed it back to October, which means they're either hoping for Halloween dollars ... or it's a sign of a troubled production.
But while we wait to rain judgment down on the new version of our favorite telekinetic teen, let's take...

A Painted Pictures production Gravestoned was released November 3rd on DVD through Indigenous Film Works and the film, while sometimes silly is a good time for those in the mood for something fun. Gravestoned stars Lar Park Lincoln (Friday the 13th Part VII) and Eryn Brooke (The Lawless) in a film that while comedic struggles to find cohesiveness amongst some technical flaws. Thankfully, director McWillie does not take himself or the film too seriously so that, despite this horror film's imperfections, Gravestoned comes through as an enjoyable time spent laughing at harmless things like stoned Scotty dogs.
The film starts off with two shady horror enthusiasts looking for a realistic looking severed arm, as they are the special effects team on a low-budget slasher film. Things take a bizarre turn when this special effects team cuts off the arm of a living corpse! Fast forward...

Our own Joe Knetter has been on a roll this year, this time writing and starring in another terrifying tale that has so far attracted one hell of a genre-centric cast. Sit back, dear readers, and get ready to take in the strange goings on at Hallow Pointe.
Synopsis
Madeline's Closet is a quaint bed and breakfast hidden away from the world on a hidden dirt road in the woods. Henry and Jane are hoping a weekend there will help rekindle their love for each other. Staying there, along with a few other guests, everything seems to be going as planned ... until the sun sets and the full moon lights up the sky. Instead of trying to save their marriage, they must now work together to try and save their lives.
Knowing Knetter it's hard to imagine what kind of sick he has in store for the film's protagonists. Speaking...
