According to director Prentice Penny, “Black Twitter: A People’s History” is something of a coming-of-age story.
Chronicling a decade and a half of posts and news stories, the Hulu docuseries examines how culture and politics have been influenced by Black users of the social media site now known as X — a relationship that has evolved and matured over time thanks to changes in technology, the White House, the site’s ownership and more.
“The big reference is ‘Star Wars,'” Penny says. “Luke in the beginning doesn’t know what the Jedis are. He’s doe-eyed. Then you have ‘Empire,’ where it gets darker. Trouble is happening. Then you have a final act of coming into your power and accepting it. For me, that was the story of Black Twitter. Given the NewImages Festival’s remit to welcome diverse artistic voices into the immersive space, programing “Noire” was an obvious choice. An augmented reality adaptation of a lesser-known case from the Civil Rights era, “Noire” brought much pedigree to this year’s Paris Xr showcase.
The project tracks the true story of Claudette Colvin, a 15-year-old girl in the segregated South who refused to give up her seat on the bus nine months before Rosa Parks did the same. Colvin’s act helped kick off the Montgomery bus boycott, but her courage never quite got the same traction as that of Parks – in part because she didn’t make for as compelling a media figure.
Ironically, that’s exactly what compelled French author Tania de Montaigne, who sought to explore that era – and its wider questions of racism and resistance – using figures untouched by hagiography. The author’s 2015 biographical essay...

Over the years, the Doctor has met all kinds of legendary cultural and societal figureheads across his Tardis travels: Vincent Van Gogh, Charles Dickens, Rosa Parks, William Shakespeare, and Agatha Christie, to name but a few. But he’s never met the Fab Four – until now. The new series of Doctor Who – the first full series to feature Ncuti Gatwa’s take on the iconic Time Lord, with showrunner Russell T Davies returning to the (galli)fray – will feature an episode titled 'The Devil's Chord', in which the Doctor rock out with The Beatles in Abbey Road. And it’s an idea that’s been a long time coming.
As Davies tells Empire – in a major new joint interview with Gatwa to celebrate the show’s latest regeneration – the notion of doing a Beatles episode has always hit a certain stumbling block. But, that in itself became a source of inspiration.

“Ooh, jukebox” – the words uttered by the Fourteenth Doctor when invited to nosey around the Fifteenth Doctor’s new Tardis in the closing moments of 60th anniversary special “The Giggle”.
Ooh, jukebox indeed. Specifically, the Doctor’s jukebox is a 1946-designed Wurlitzer 1015 nicknamed “The Bubbler” on account of the bubbles that move through its colourful tubes as it plays tunes. Even more specifically, we’ve seen the same make and model of jukebox twice before on Doctor Who, once on the set of Clara’s 1950s-Diner Tardis, and once five billion years into the future on Platform One, where the great and the good are gathered to watch the imminent destruction of planet Earth.
Whether or not it’s supposed to be the self-same jukebox from those previous appearances, or simply something shiny that caught the Doctor’s eye, the songs it plays are significant. Production designer Phil Sims explained...

Following up his narrative drama Cassandro, Roger Ross Williams returned to the documentary realm for his second feature of the year with Stamped from the Beginning. Adapting Dr. Ibram X. Kendi’s book, the TIFF selection utilizes vivid animations and leading female scholars to explore the history of anti-Black racist ideas. Ahead of a Netflix release next month, the first trailer has now arrived.
Here’s the official synopsis: “Oscar-winning director Roger Ross Williams brings Dr. Ibram X. Kendi’s New York Times bestseller to the screen with Stamped from the Beginning. Published in 2016, Dr. Kendi’s National Book Award winner chronicles the entire story of anti-Black racist ideas and their staggering power over the course of American history. Williams’ documentary adaptation uses an innovative animation process that blends live action with the art of the era to illuminate figures and moments both well-known and obscure, both historical and contemporary.

If your education was only gleaned from the American public school system, Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, and Rosa Parks may be the only Black historical figures you know. The limited overview of the Civil Rights movement and slavery is at stake when schools, government, and other authoritative bodies whitewash dark annals of the country’s foundation in today’s direction of banning the passage of the past to future generations. Yet Academy Award winner Roger Ross Williams inhibits America’s violent chapters, taboo portions, and past Presidents from being forgotten in his newest film, Stamped From the Beginning.
His adaptation of scholar Ibram X. Kendi’s book of the same name observes how America imbued concept of race from the 1500s to the present. Florida is always going to be Florida, but this time the state has really topped itself. On Wednesday, Florida’s Board of Education unanimously approved new rules for teaching Black history, which are concerning.
The guidelines, titled “Florida’s State Academic Standards – Social Studies, 2023,” offer “benchmark clarifications” to teachers and educators on specific topics for instruction. These clarifications have raised serious concern with the Florida Education Association, the statewide teachers union, who called the rules “a big step backward.”

Richard Dreyfuss doesn’t get it, but most grouchy, self-proclaimed keepers of the old Hollywood guard never do when it comes to creating an industry that gives a chance for everyone to thrive.
It was Sept. 8, 2020, and I was one week into my job as the awards editor for Variety when the Academy dropped its bombshell news that as part of its Aperture 2025 initiative, the organization was introducing new representation and inclusion requirements for submitting in the best picture category. Chicago – It’s Oscar Week, as the 95th Academy Awards will be broadcast on Sunday, March 12th, 2023, on ABC-tv. Nominated for Best Supporting Actress is Angela Bassett for “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” her second nomination after “What’s Love Got to Do with It?” in 1994.
After earning her Masters Degree at the Yale School of Drama in the 1980s, Bassett took to the New York stage, most notably in two of August Wilson’s “Pittsburgh Cycle” plays. She expanded with parts in film and TV, including “Boyz in the Hood” (1991). Breakthrough recognition would come in the next couple of years, as Bassett co-starred with Denzel Washington in “Malcolm X” (as Malcolm’s wife Betty Shabazz) and her Oscar nominated role as Tina Turner in “What’s Love Got to Do with It” (1993).

Awards season gives the opportunity for many stars to see and be seen, but this year’s African American Critics Association Awards gave its honorees — many of whom were just out of reach of an Oscar nomination — to feel heard and acknowledged.
Taking the stage at the Four Seasons’ Beverly Wilshire hotel to accept the award for Best Supporting Actress, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” star Angela Bassett acknowledged her current Oscar nomination, saying “I’ve been asked often throughout this award season, what these nominations and awards mean to me. A lot of people don’t realize that although I’ve been blessed to work quite a lot, it’s been 29 years since I’ve been a nominee.”

Benjamin Crump gave a fiery speech while accepting the Social Justice Impact Award at the 2023 NAACP Image Awards Saturday night.
“Tonight’s recipient of the Social Justice Impact Award is a voice for those whose mere existence has been criminalized,” Tracee Ellis Ross said as she introduced the nationally recognized trial lawyer. “A voice for the collective advancement and protection of Black people. Whether bringing international awareness to another senseless death of a Black person at the hands of police or taking to task those who wish to suppress and erase our history, attorney Benjamin Crump is a tireless advocate for justice and equality.”
Following a highlight video, Crump took the stage, where he thanked several people including NAACP National Board of Directors chairman Leon Russell, God, his family and “all of those who have fought with me throughout the years to make liberty and justice for all a reality.

There were no shortage of memorable group dances throughout the eight seasons of Dance Moms. Nearly every week the Abby Lee Dance Company Junior Elite Competition Team competed a new number at a dance competition. The team’s teacher, Abby Lee Miller, always stressed the importance of the group winning. With few exceptions, the group was typically Miller’s top priority. Of course, some group dances stuck out to fans more than others. Here are five group dances that still stand out to us years later.

We couldn’t make a list about memorable group dances without including Party, Party, Party. After all, it was the group dance featured in the very first episode of Dance Moms. While it wasn’t the best group dance of all time, the costumes were super fun and the girls had a lot of energy.

You play Ramonda, the Queen Mother of Wakanda, in the Black Panther films. Is there one person or inspiration you keep in your head to play a queen?
For me, it’s just the essence of the Black woman. Our strength, resilience, patience, generosity, intellect. That’s what I try to hold onto. An amalgamation of all of us.
In recent years Black women have finally been recognized as pioneers in the social-justice space with #MeToo and Black Lives Matter. Does that ever feel like a burden?

In The Rebellious Life of Mrs Rosa Parks, an often simplified icon of civil rights is given an expansive and deserving tribute
To Tell the Truth is a long-running TV show in which a panel of celebrities is presented with three contestants who all claim to be the same person with an unusual occupation of experience. The panel grills each of them and must decide which two are imposters and which one is telling the truth about their identity.
In 1980, three bespectacled African American women appeared on the show, each stating: “My name is Rosa Parks.” Only one of the three voting panelists correctly identified her – today their musings look demeaning and trivial.

The current era of Doctor Who is coming to an end, with Jodie Whittaker and Chris Chibnall (not to mention Mandip Gill) saying goodbye after four years of putting their stamp on the show.
At the recent press night for ‘The Power of the Doctor’, Whittaker’s final episode and the BBC Centenary special, the post-screening Q&a gave Chibnall a chance to reflect on his favourite episodes from his reign.
When asked which episodes he was most proud of, he admitted it was ‘really hard to choose’ and ‘it’d be easier to pick a favourite child’, but one particular area stood out:
‘What we’ve done with the historicals I’ve really loved. Obviously ‘Rosa’ and ‘Demons of the Punjab’ and the Sontaran and Weeping Angel episodes we did last year – I really loved those, but it’s different moods. What we tried to do is have a...

“Till” had its West Coast premiere on Saturday, October 8 at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, exactly one week after its New York Film Festival debut. The movie tells the true story of Mamie Till-Mobley’s (Danielle Deadwyler) relentless pursuit of justice for her 14-year old son, Emmett Till (Jalyn Hall), who, in 1955, was lynched while visiting his cousins in Mississippi.
See ‘Till’ reviews out of New York Film Festival highlight Danielle Deadwyler’s ‘magnificent,’ ‘incredible,’ ‘stirring’ performance
Deadwyler and Hall, along with director Chinonye Chukwu, writers Keith Beauchamp and Michael Reilly and other stars of the film hit the red carpet to celebrate its release. “‘Till’ is an effort that came out of 30 years,” Beauchamp stated. “I was a close friend to Mother Mobley, Emmett Till’s mother. She was my mentor and friend. This was something that she had tried to fight to get done when she was still with us.

Growing up in Texas toward the tail end of the 20th century, I was not taught about Emmett Till. I’ve learned about him since, of course. Till’s name adorns this year’s overdue federal antilynching act, and his tragic fate has inspired plays and films, including 2018’s Oscar-nominated short, “My Nephew Emmett,” and now a powerful feature from Chinonye Chukwu, who gave Alfre Woodard one of her greatest roles in 2019 Sundance winner “Clemency.”
Till’s story — that of a 14-year-old Black boy from Chicago who, in August 1955, was kidnapped in the middle of the night and lynched while visiting his family in Mississippi — may have been omitted from my Southern schooling for racist reasons, though I suspect it had as much to do with Western culture’s “great man” bias. History, as a field of study, celebrates the achievements of heroic individuals. Nat Turner, Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks.

By now you know that on Monday, a Trump-appointed judge declared the commercial airlines mask mandate unconstitutional. And on Tuesday, Jimmy Kimmel celebrated everyone who threw temper tantrums every time they had to put a mask on.
“In Florida yesterday, a federal judge struck down the mask mandate in place for passengers on airplanes, trains, and buses,” Kimmel said at the start of his monologue. “Governor Ron DeSantis, of course, praised the decision. He tweeted ‘it was great to see a federal judge in Florida follow the law and reject the Biden transportation mask mandate” – or as he calls it “Critical Face Theory.”
“All the major airlines have already updated their policy. Delta, American, United, Southwest, JetBlue, Frontier, and Spirit announced they will no longer require passengers to wear a mask. Well Spirit Airlines actually didn’t have an official mask requirement because they don’t have windows on the plane,...

Tribeca announced on Tuesday its full lineup of features and shorts, including documentaries and animated films. In all, 110 feature films will play at the festival from 151 filmmakers across 40 countries, with 88 being world premieres.

Anthony Mackie, the star of “Falcon and the Winter Soldier” and the next Captain America, is planning to open his own film production studio in his home town of New Orleans.
News of the facility on a 20-acre lot in East New Orleans was first reported over the weekend by local outlets in New Orleans and confirmed by the city’s mayor Latoya Cantrell, as well as official land records in the city.
“This is incredible,” Cantrell wrote. “The influx of productions will not only bring economic growth but job opportunities!”
A representative for Mackie did not immediately respond to a request for comment to provide any additional details about the film studio.
Mackie will next be seen in Peacock’s “Twisted Metal” series based on the video game franchise, and he’s also making his directorial debut on a film called “Spark” about civil rights icon Claudette Colvin, which...

Spoiler Alert: Do not read unless you’ve watched “A Madea Homecoming,” now streaming on Netflix.
As Tyler Perry prepared to bring his famously “braless and lawless” character Madea to Netflix, the media mogul came up with an idea to spoof some pop culture moments and some of his famous friends as part of the movie’s marketing campaign.
“This is all me. I haven’t gone through Netflix or anything for all of that stuff. I just started in my office,” he tells Variety. “I was like, ‘Let’s just poke some fun,’ so when I saw the Adele interview and concert, I thought, ‘Man, I’ve got to spoof this.’”
Next up was a cover mimicking Beyoncé’s “Homecoming” documentary, with Madea posing in a crystal headpiece like the superstar songstress. Perry captioned the post, “Homegoing! Live from her backyard. I want to thank my incredible Moth-hive. Ma-Chella.
