Every year, there comes a point when the UK comedy industry suddenly becomes abuzz with whispers. Word gets about that the producers of Mock the Week are in town. They’re scouting out stand-up shows for new talent – and you could be next. “Everyone’s going, ‘You know they’re looking’,” comedian Maisie Adam tells me. “You suddenly ended up going to every gig feeling like you’re in those early episodes of X Factor, queuing up outside.”
When it was announced in August that the BBC was canning Mock the Week after 17 years, in order to “create room for new shows”, online discourse exploded. People questioned what the show ending in its current format (the team are optimistic it’ll find a home elsewhere) meant for the BBC, for the panel show format and for satire as a whole. But for comedians, the end of Mock the Week represented...

Dara Ó Briain joked aboutMock the Weekbeing axed by the BBC in his recent appearance on Channel 4 comedy showThe Last Leg.
Earlier this month, it was announced that the BBC had called time on the satirical panel show after 17 years and 21 series “in order to create room for new shows”.
On Friday’s episode of The Last Leg (19 August), while talking about Ó Briain being touted as the possible replacement for Jeremy Paxman onUniversity Challenge (a job that went to former Independent editor Amol Rajan), host Adam Hills asked him: “How do you feel about your name being in the mix?”
“I think my name’s gonna be in the mix for everything. They fill out a list for these things and they’ll pick whoever’s been recently fired.”
He added: “It’ll be me and Richard Osman, just sitting at home in our pyjamas going, ‘Oh, I...

After 10 years and a whopping 135 episodes, Andy Parsons has quit Mock the Week.
The comedy panel quiz regular has decided to focus on his Slacktivist Action Group podcast and new live show.
"I'd like to thank all of the people I've worked with over the years on Mock and from the BBC," Parsons said.
"However, when 'Unlikely Things to Hear in a Superhero Movie' comes around for the 4th time it is probably time to move on.
"Perhaps this will be an opportunity to make a female comedian a regular."
He continued: "I, myself, am looking forward to chairing the new monthly show and podcast Slacktivist Action Group and delving a little deeper into the bigger issues affecting the UK.
"With what seems like an exciting time for politics in this country, this is something I'd like to focus more of my time upon, with a chance to host a...

Pick Of The Week
Franklin & Bash: Season 1 (DVD)
When Peter Bash (Mark-Paul Gosselaar) and Jared Franklin (Breckin Meyer), two young attorneys with a no-holds-barred courtroom style, are hired by Stanton Infeld (Malcolm McDowell), life at his buttoned-down law firm will never be the same. Working with their equally oddball staff – researcher Pindar Singh (Kumail Nanjiani) and paralegal Carmen Phillips (Dana Davis) – Franklin and Bash shake things up at the firm with their audacious tactics and immediately find an enemy in its star lawyer, Infeld’s nephew Damien Karp (Reed Diamond). Andy Parsons has admitted that some comedians are unhappy with the editing on Mock The Week. The stand-up and show regular told Digital Spy that some comics do not return because they are unhappy with the free-for-all format of the show. Asked if the panel show is too adversarial or 'male', Parsons said: "There have been some fantastic female guests, but not all of them have wanted to come back. It's recorded for three hours and it gets boiled down to half an hour. "Within that time you can feel that you've done some really good stuff but you'll never see it in the actual edit. So certain people have not been happy with how the edit's gone." He (more)...

Andy Parsons “Gruntled”, O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire, September 15th 2011
Rating: 3 out of 5 stars
When faced with such exuberant co-stars as Hugh Dennis, and until recently, Frankie Boyle, Andy Parsons is, for my take, the weakest link of the BBC’s superb panel show Mock the Week. That his gags too often come across as laboured, as though waiting for the audience to “get it”, is either something you’ll love or hate, but given his long-standing tenure on the show, plenty apparently seem to love it. Whatever side you fall down on, we thankfully get a far more off-the-cuff Parsons when his hands aren’t tied by the binds of a license fee, for though his stand-up show Gruntled is very rough around the edges and occasionally self-plagiarises his own TV work, it is a solidly entertaining 90-minutes of comedy nevertheless.

Last week on a crisp Thursday evening HeyUGuys shuffled into the Shepherd’s Bush Empire to see the amiable entertainer Andy Parsons on his 2011 tour ‘Gruntled.’ For those of you who are accustomed, like I was, to seeing Mr Parsons bouncing off a panel of comics on quiz show Mock the Week I must admit, I was a little nervous about a solo performance; as it turns out…so was Andy.
I can’t say I blamed the comedian for his nerves when he arrived on stage. Not only was the show being recorded live for the DVD release in November but due to an embarrassing miscalculation, production were shuffling us around for half an hour prior to the performance in a flaccid attempt to make the audience look bigger than it was. On a Friday night, with a complimentary drink or two this oversight might have been transformed into...

Doctor Who At The Proms, a new fourth series of Mad Men, a return to Deadwood and Mock The Week, plus great movies for the weekend ahead...
We start the week with a musical treat and a temporary fix for our Doctor Who habits. On Monday, September 6th, at 8:30pm, BBC3 hosts Doctor Who At The Proms 2010 where a number of Who cast and characters will tap toes and sway eye stalks to Murray Gold's music. We'll have a special remembrance on the day from a fan who was in attendance at the filming of the programme. You'll find it in our TV section on Monday, with an additional reminder about the broadcast.
We heard good things about Deadwood, but missed the show when it first aired here. We reckon we'll rectify that gap in our TV western drama viewing and TCM aims to help, with daily airings...

Stargate Universe's maiden season draws to a close, Mock The Week returns, there's lots of football and a fair few movies in our look ahead to the next week's telly...
Well, we hope you like football!
The telly landscape is looking rather barren this week, unless you count the various pitches. We're quite looking forward to the World Cup coverage, but it sure does make our show and film list on the short side...
On Monday, June 14th, those following the beginnings of the career carved out by the brilliant Dexter can tune in to the opening of the second season with a nice chunk of episodes in two days' time. It's Alive starts the second season off on FX at 1:10am, immediately followed by episode two, Waiting To Exhale. Despite being in his early 40s, the star of Mock the Week and a comedy staple in the UK for nearly two decades, Andy Parsons has only just recorded his first live stand up show for release on DVD. The auditorium filled slowly as I sipped my £4 bottle of Corona poured into a plastic cup and squinted against the extremely bright lights which shone out over the crowd. A camera man was scuttling around at the front, taking what everyone assumed were establishing shots for the DVD menus or whatever. But we’ll come back to that. Projected onto the rear of the stage was a publicity picture of Parsons, which will adorn the DVD when it comes out.
