Cookery by the Book, the show that created the cookbook-podcast niche in the podcast food category, launched in 2015 by Suzy Chase (The Pod Process Audio Lab by Suzy Chase), will air its final episode at the end of December 2022.
A food lover who devoured cookbooks like novels, Chase brought cookbooks to life for seven years as she interviewed cookbook authors to learn their insider tips and shared the best ones with her audience of home cooks from her dining room table in New York City’s West Village. Chase treated cookbooks as archeological artifacts: in each episode Chase used food as a lens to examine people and cultures.
“This show has been an absolute dream to make and surpassed all my expectations with over 2.5 million downloads. Not too shabby for a niche podcast. The power of Cookery by the Book Podcast was I was able to be the conduit for...

Chef Joshua Weissman, who has 7 million subscribers on YouTube and more than 6 million on TikTok, parleyed his online popularity into An Unapologetic Cookbook, which was published in Sept. 2021 with Dk and nabbed a top spot on the New York Times best-seller list shortly after its debut in the same category for cookbooks, securing a spot in the list for a total of 9 weeks.

Showbiz has returned to in-person TV awards campaigns, meaning that Hollywood is gathering Emmy voters and contenders for panels and parties on a nightly basis. But the best dinner of awards season may not be served in L.A. at all. The James Beard Awards, one of the most coveted accolades in the food world, are being held in Chicago on Monday, preceded by the James Beard Media Awards on Saturday, and small-screen favorites like Phil Rosenthal and “Top Chef: Family Style” are in the running.
Among the 2022 nominees for long form media this year is Rosenthal’s beloved Netflix series “Somebody Feed Phil,” in which the “Everybody Loves Raymond” creator takes his comedic sensibilities and appetite on the road, connecting with people in cities around the world while trying their culture’s cuisines.

Code blue: “General Hospital” was the evening’s big winner at the Daytime Emmy Awards, with five awards, followed by “The Young and the Restless,” with three, and culinary series “Valerie’s Home Cooking” with two. The specific ingredients of Jacques Pépin’s Lifetime Achievement Award acceptance speech at this year’s Daytime Emmys are unknown, but count on a dash or two of modesty.
The world-famous chef says he was deeply touched when he was told the honor — the first to go to someone in the cooking genre — was being bestowed upon him.
“It’s amazing because the food world has not been recognized much at this level,” Pépin says. “When I spoke to David Michaels [the senior vice president of daytime at the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences], I told him I’d like to thank whoever nominated me. I was flabbergasted.”
Born in Bourg-en-Bresse, France, in 1935, Pépin developed a passion and respect for cooking after his mother, Jeannette, opened a restaurant, Le Pélican. As a young man, he worked at Le Plaza Athénée in Paris where a chef pal regaled Pépin with stories of life in Washington, D.C.
In 1959, his dream of visiting America came true.

Renowned chefs Alice Waters and Jacques Pepin say reality competition cooking shows such as “Top Chef” and “Chopped” are doing a “disservice” to the art of cooking. The famous chefs, who are the subjects of the PBS documentary series “Chefs Flight,” said at the Television Critics Association press tour on Monday that the shows are promoting the “fast food culture” of American cuisine. “It’s a disservice very often because this is not what’s cooking is all about,” Pepin said. “That kind of confrontation that you have there is not really how you learn to cook. If Dr. Hannibal Lecter ever wrote a cookbook, it would be titled, How to Cook Everyone. (Or, maybe, To Serve Man — copyright Rod Serling.) Dr. Lecter is the classiest cannibal around, with the hands of Jacques Pepin and the face of an intense Danish actor. Throughout the show, he prepares lavish meals from the body parts of his various victims: Cassie Boyle’s lungs, some random guy running away in the woods, serial killer James Gray. Like the grisly murder tableaus that are so lovely you can’t look away from them, the dishes on Hannibal are so food porn-y you don’t know whether to grab a fork or to throw up. His guests gush over his elegant plates, ignorant to the fact that they're about to eat people. Click through to see every dish he’s made on the show so far.

Going into the finale of "The Taste" Season 2, Ludo Lefebvre had three team members left -- Marina Chung, Jeff Kawakami and Louise Leonard -- to one cook on Anthony Bourdain's team, Lee Knoeppel. The other two chefs had no contestants remaining.
For the semifinal challenge, international chef Jacques Pépin was there to judge. Each chef prepared a "poor dish" and a "rich dish," which made for quite the contrasting ingredients. Pépin put through Marina, Louise and Lee, leaving Jeff eliminated before the finals.
The final challenge was a "Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner" challenge -- three mouthfuls, one each for each meal of the day. With Chef Pépin helping them in the kitchen!
Marina made English muffin with quail egg, a pork belly and oyster spring roll and short ribs with kale for her three stages. Louise chose a fried quail egg, fried oyster po' boy and steak with red wine sauce and mushrooms.

In late May, Bravo's "Top Chef" arrived in New Orleans to film its 11th season, premiering on Wednesday, Oct. 2, in a city famed for fun, food and fabulous music. Production wrapped in early July.
But sitting as it does on the Gulf Coast in the Deep South of the U.S., the Big Easy is also known for warm weather -- and the "Top Chef" team could hardly have picked a toastier time of year.
Says judge Gail Simmons, a cook and former food journalist,to Zap2it, "It was incredibly hot outside. It was definitely taxing on our chefs that are cooking and on our production crew, shooting long hours and long days in 100-degree, 100 percent humidity weather. Otherwise, that was a small price to pay to get to do it in New Orleans.
"We mixed it up a lot. We're indoors; we're outdoors. We go into the countryside.

While her son Joe Bastianich lives it up in primetime on MasterChef, Lidia Bastianich contents herself with a far more low-profile and easily kinder type of programming on PBS. Her Lidia Celebrates America series has covered a number of different special events iconic in Americana like weddings and holidays, and this time she takes a more patriotic turn (for a few countries) with the theme of "Freedom & Independence". Her 4th of July special looks not only at American freedom and independence, but the legacy of celebrations for new citizenship, the liberation of slaves, the French equivalent of our independence day (Bastille Day) with Jacques Pepin, and the similar celebration from the Philippines. It's a mix of cultures that sees Lidia trying a truly diverse collection of dishes while learning about worldwide traditions for celebrating independence.

There's always camaraderie when people gather around a table with chef Lidia Bastianich. The PBS special, "Lidia Celebrates America: Freedom and Independence" Friday, June 28 (check local listings), demonstrates that the camaraderie runs deeper than food -- it is one of ideals.
In the third of her specials, Bastianich travels to chef Jacques Pepin's Connecticut home, where they discuss Bastille Day.
In Galveston, Texas, actress Anna Deavere Smith accompanies Bastianich as she learns about Juneteenth, the celebration of Galveston's slaves being freed two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.
And in New York, she celebrates Philippines Independence Day with actor Alec Mapa. All, of course, are done with food as a central theme, and Bastianich tries new dishes, including Filipino banana ketchup. When she learns that it's put on pasta, the celebrated Italian chef jokingly says, "That's sacrilegious."
Bastianich visits Monticello in Virginia, where a naturalization ceremony is held on Independence Day.

Legendary French chef and PBS host Jacques Pepin gave an interview with The Washingtonian where he talked about a number of topics, including outspoken British chef Gordon Ramsay.
"I wasn't crazy about Hell's Kitchen. For me food is still, to a certain extent, an act of love. You always cook for the other. You always cook for your friend or your wife or your lover or for your kid or your cousin or your mother. But it's always giving, and being together. When I saw a show like that where everyone is yelling, everyone gets terrorized, there is no way you can produce great food under that type of condition. You cannot give of yourself."

Is this man the “Chef of the Century”?
That’s the title that the Culinary Institute of America bestowed upon French restaurateur Paul Bocuse at a New York gala on Wednesday night. The 85-year-Bocuse, often hailed as the father of the classical-gone-modern approach known as nouvelle cuisine, was feted by a crowd that included all sorts of foodie and other notables – namely, Thomas Keller (who also held a private chefs-only event for Bocuse on Tuesday), Jean-Georges Vongterichten,...

To celebrate this week's arrival of beautifully rendered new books by chefs Gabrielle Hamilton and Grant Achatz, Tien Nguyen recommends five addictive reads by M.F.K. Fisher and more.
The secretive, rarefied world of an award-winning kitchen is rarely glimpsed by those not wearing a toque, but this week, two memoirs from acclaimed chefs shed light on the typically hot activities behind closed doors.
Related story on The Daily Beast: Spies We Loved
Gabrielle Hamilton narrates her decades-long journey to becoming chef and owner of Prune restaurant in New York City in Blood, Bones & Butter, which Anthony Bourdain has already deemed the "best memoir by a chef ever." Then, later this week, the much-heralded Grant Achatz releases Life, on the Line, tracking his story from determined young cook to leader of the molecular gastronomy movement. His cruel battle with tongue cancer nearly derails his goals, and ratchets the drama to impossible heights.

Last night we had an incredibly hard Quickfire. I really felt for the cheftestants because what they had to do was very difficult in the time they had. Frenching all those lamb chops is really difficult and it has to be done really perfectly. Turning the artichokes...
