Listicle While Christopher Nolan’s politics in his films raises some pressing questions, it is hard to deny his ability to tell engaging stories. Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer will be releasing in theatres on June 21, and the massive hype around the film is only matched by fans eagerly waiting for Barbie. Nolan has over the years built up a reputation as a ‘cerebral’ director, though he does have a fair share of detractors (Did anyone really understand Tenant?). His successful reboot of Batman on the silver screen won him a dedicated fan base among superhero comic book enthusiasts. Nolan is also known for bringing back the same set of actors, disliking VFX and writing non-linear plots that sometimes leave viewers quite puzzled. While the British-American director’s politics in his films raises some pressing questions, it is hard to deny his ability to tell an engaging story and deliver characters...

The story of Kim Philby, the high-ranking British intelligence official who turned out to be one of the biggest double agents in U.K. history, is well known at this point. Dozens of books, fiction and nonfiction, have been written about how Philby took in the great and the good of MI6 and the CIA for decades before he finally had to flee across the Iron Curtain in 1963.

In The Son, Hugh Jackman plays Peter, a man struggling with parenting his teenage boy, while attempting to break the chains of generational trauma he inherited from his own father, played by Anthony Hopkins. Writer-director Florian Zeller brings this, his second in a series of his plays, to the screen, having debuted The Father, also starring Hopkins, last Oscar season. In taking on this role, Jackman became the crux of a story so eviscerating and personal, he says it affected the way he parents his own children, while at the same time, he felt the presence of his father, who passed away during the shoot.

Catalina Sandino Moreno and Harold Torres have been cast in “Silent Night,” an action-thriller starring Joel Kinnaman.
Hong Kong filmmaker John Woo (“A Better Tomorrow”) is directing the film, which is currently in production in Mexico City. The story centers on Godlock (Kinnaman), a father on a mission to avenge his young son, who was tragically caught in the crossfire of gang violence on Christmas Eve. Moreno will portray Saya, Godlock’s wife, and Torres will take on the role of the gang leader, Playa.
Robert Lynn is writing the screenplay, which contains almost no dialogue. Instead, the film will rely on the actor’s abilities to convey meaning and intention through Woo’s stylized imagery and intense action sequences.
Thunder Road Pictures and Capstone Studios are producing “Silent Night.”

Featuring a sedate Guy Pearce, Andrew Baird’s directorial debut “Blade-Runner” -lite “Zone 414” wastes a compelling premise on an overly-long neo-noir that teases a post-technocratic society in which androids and humans are segregated and only interact within the titular Zone. While riffing off almost every film about androids that came before it — “A.I.,” “Ex Machina,” etc.

Marta Dusseldorp on Jack Irish, Foreign Programming in the US, and the Tired Trope of Women in Peril
One of the best things about the proliferation of streaming services is that we can finally watch some of the best foreign programming in the US without needing it to be Americanized.
We had a chance to talk about that and a lot more with Marta Dusseldorp, who has had several programs airing on Acorn TV, where the final episode of the final season of Jack Irish, in which she costars with Guy Pierce, drops today.
Having watched as many of her shows as possible, it was such a pleasure to chat with Marta. Please read about her interesting viewpoint on the show and a lot more below.
How do you feel about Jack Irish coming to an end? You've been doing that for a long time now.

It has been close to two weeks since HBO’s stunning and emotionally draining season finale for Mare of Easttown. The show was a hit with both critics and fans. With many fans putting asking each other who they thought was the murderer? I was wrong in who I thought done it, as many of my friends turned in week after week. Unfortunately, they were wrong with their guess too. All the mystery paid off, and the writing and acting on the show were superb. Mare of Easttown revolves around a detective who is trying to solve a murder in Pennsylvania. Over a seven-episode run, the show brought Evan Peters, Guy Pierce, Jean Smart, and Julianne Nicholson together. The cast did a phenomenal with the characters they were portraying. In many interviews, Kate Winslet has said that she loved playing the part and would be down to play the detective once more.

The coronavirus couldn't have come at a worse time for currently airing broadcast television hoping to end their full seasons.
Heck, it's not good for upcoming series or pilots under consideration, either.
While it's possible bubble shows might get a second life so their already carved path continues and viewers can snuggle in with what's already comfortable, if production stoppage goes on for a long time, seasons might not end at all and fall TV could get delayed until January 2021.
But amidst all of the chaos, there are silver linings.
We talk about the glut of great programming all the time and how impossible it is to watch what you want. What better time to check out alternatives than when all of your time is spent indoors?

Okay action flick fans, it’s still fairly early in the movie year but who’s ready for a high-octane thriller based on a comic book character? I’m guessing the answer’s a resounding yes, though the superheroes don’t generally invade the multiplex for several more weeks. So which comics publishing company is the print home of the possible subject of a new big franchise? It’s not the current “golden stable of stars” Marvel (now part of the “Mouse House”). Nor is it the older line that’s trying hard to “catch up”, DC (linked with Warner Brothers). Perhaps it’s Image, the upstarts that gave us Spawn? Nope, but you’re getting closer. One of its ilk from around the same era is Valiant Comics (Entertainment as they expand), part of the independent press explosion of the early to mid-1990s. Back then the readers were...

As I watched the latest trailer for the latest Vin Diesel-starring super-powered action-adventure, I began humming "Bette Davis Eyes" to myself. It's always a pleasure to see Guy Pierce on screen; he's certain to bring a measured humanity to his role as a scientist who brings dead people back to life so they can kill people for a shadowy agency. And Vin Diesel is (seriously) always a treat to watch as a mucho macho dude who begins to suspect something is amiss, especially when he says something like, "something's not right." The screenplay credits include both Eric Heisserer and Jeff Wadlow, so I'm positive they did everything they could, within their vivid, occasionally colliding imaginations, to translate the comic book by Bob Layton, Don Perlin,...

Renee Zellweger stars as the immortal Judy Garland in Judy, and Zellweger will also be the subject of a festival tribute as well. Vin Diesel is currently shooting the comic book adaptation of Bloodshot for Sony Pictures. The studio is said to be developing it as an R-rated film that is being likened to Robocop, Terminator, and Total Recall. They want it to have that classic 1980s action movie tone.
Diesel will be playing a super-soldier created by the secret government organization called Project Rising Spirit. When he is brought back from the dead through the use of nanotechnology and suffering total memory loss, he struggles to reconnect with who he was while also learning what sort of weapon he has become, with the help of a group of other augmented combatants called Chainsaw. Bloodshot also has powers of regeneration, technomancy and meta-morphing, which was made possible through nanites that were injected into his blood.
