Suzanne Lindon writes, directs and stars in her impressive debut feature Spring Blossom (Seize Printemps), which was part of the special 2020 Cannes Film Festival Official Selection and releases in select U.S. theaters May 21 via KimStim Films after a European run. The daughter of French film actors Sandrine Kiberlain and Vincent Lindon, she wrote the screenplay when she was just 15, and her authentic perspective shines through this tale of teenage romantic obsession.
Lindon plays a 16-year-old schoolgirl in Paris, also named Suzanne, who lives with her liberal parents (Florence Viala and Frédéric Pierrot) and sociable sister (Rebecca Marder). Suzanne is regarded as an oddball in the family — they’re visibly surprised when she goes out to a party. Once there, she’s bored by her friends swigging booze, and uninterested in the boys her age. Dreamer Suzanne is looking for something outside of her relatively parochial realm. Then, she spots...

"I'm bored with people my age." KimStim Films has debuted an official US trailer for this French coming-of-age romance titled Spring Blossom, aka Seize Printemps in French, which was originally supposed to premiere at last year's Cannes Film Festival. Instead it premiered at the TIFF, San Sebastián, Athens, and Moscow Film Festivals. We posted a trailer last summer, but it was removed by the distributors. Suzanne Lindon directs and stars in this film as a 16-year-old girl who is bored with her own age group, unable to connect with those around her. She becomes obsessed and sexually involved with an older man, an actor, at a theater she passes by. This also stars Arnaud Valois as Raphaël, plus Frédéric Pierrot, Dominique Besnehard, Rebecca Marder, Philippe Uchan, and Françoise Widhoff. I'm sure the age-gap young romance in this will cause an uproar, but it also just seems like an intimately honest...

As this year’s Glasgow Film Festival comes to a close, it brings us to the precipice of spring where the world becomes that little bit brighter. And with that the closing film, Spring Blossom, though it doesn’t quite shine bright enough as hoped.
The film isn’t lacking ambition as Suzanne Lindon proves by not only starring as the lead, ‘Suzanne’, but also on writing as well as directing duties. It is a remarkable achievement in of itself in what is its UK premiere as well as Lindon’s feature debut in all three departments.
There is a certain self-assured feel to Lindon’s performance with her natural screen presence. Set in Paris the story follows the life of a teenager who we instantly get a sense is disconnected on a level from those in her circle, even her life to a degree, until she catches a glimpse...

Suzanne Lindon, the 20-year old star and filmmaker of “Spring Blossom,” was born into French cinema royalty, being the daughter of famed French actors Vincent Lindon and Sandrine Kiberlain; but the spirited young woman was determined early on to plow her own path towards acting. While Lindon initially wrote “Spring Blossom” as a vehicle to make her first foray into acting with an ideally-crafted leading part, the film has now established her as a promising young director.
“Spring Blossom” is handled in international markets by Luxbox and will be released theatrically in France by Paname Distribution on Dec. 9. The coming-of-age tale was part of Cannes 2020’s Official Selection, played at San Sebastian, Toronto and New York film festivals, and screens at El Gouna Film Festival on Saturday.

"I saw you following me." "Were you with him?" Strand Releasing has debuted an official US trailer for the Spanish dramatic thriller Madre, from acclaimed filmmaker Rodrigo Sorogoyen. This first premiered at the Venice Film Festival last year, where it won the Venice Horizons Award for Best Actress. It also stopped by the Montpellier Mediterranean Film Festival, Seville European Film Festival, and Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival last year. Ten years have passed since Elena's son, then six years old, has disappeared. Today Elena lives and works at a seaside restaurant until she meets a French teenager who reminds her of her missing son. Marta Nieto stars as Elena, with an indie cast including Jules Porier, Alex Brendemühl, Anne Consigny, Frédéric Pierrot, and Guillaume Arnault. This looks very mysterious and suspenseful, with powerful atmospheric cinematography that makes it even more tense to watch. It's definitely worth a look. Here's the...

"Boys your age can be dumb." But they're always dumb! “The Intouchables” directors Eric Toledano and Olivier Nakache, whose latest film, “The Specials,” played on closing night at Cannes, are set to make their TV debut with a French adaptation of the hit Israeli series “BeTipul” (“In Treatment).”
Commissioned by the Franco-German network Arte, the French makeover, “En Therapie,” will be directed by Toledano, Nakache, Mathieu Vadepied (“La Vie en Grand”), Pierre Salvadori (“En liberté!”) and Nicolas Pariser (“Alice and the Mayor”).
The series is set in Paris in the aftermath of the terror attacks of Nov. 13, 2015. It revolves around a therapist, Philippe Dayan, played by Frédéric Pierrot, and some of his patients: a surgeon going through an emotional crisis (Melanie Thierry), a couple on the verge of breaking up (Anaïs Demoustier and Pio Marmaï), and a suicidal teenager (Céleste Brunnquell). Days after the attacks, Dayan, whose office is located near the Bataclan theater, receives a visit from a cop (Read Kateb) suffering from trauma.

There are two kinds of “what if” story. One plunges viewers into an immediate, all-too-imaginable situation, and invites them to consider how they might act and react; the other casts us into realms of uncanny uncertainty, inviting us to consider the world as we don’t quite know it. Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s Oscar-nominated 2017 short “Madre” was an expert example of the former, placing us inside the head of a single mother freaking out over a phone call from her young son, who’s abandoned and imperiled on an unidentified beach neither she nor he can pinpoint. A parent’s worst nightmare of the most tightly wound order, it seemed an obvious candidate for feature treatment very much in the other “what if” camp — what was a palpitating mystery gives way to a kind of metaphysical love story, eliding the roles of parent, child and lover.

The Berlin Film Festival has revealed the first wave of titles for its competition lineup, including new films from François Ozon, Marie Kreutzer, Denis Côté and Fatih Akin. Charles Ferguson’s Watergate documentary is among the Berlinale Special titles.
The first nine Competition and Berlinale Special films were revealed today, alongside the previously announced opening film, The Kindness of Strangers by Lone Scherfig.
Festival favourites Akin (In The Fade) and Ozon (In The House) return with German-language thriller The Golden Glove and French-language drama By The Grace Of God, respectively. The former follows a serial killer who strikes fear in the hearts of residents of Hamburg during the early 1970s. The latter looks at a real-life case of sexual abuses allegedly committed by a French priest in the late 1980s. Oscar-winner Ferguson (Inside Job) will present anticipated 260-minute feature doc Watergate, which is sure to draw plenty of contemporary parallels.

Road Games Blu-ray / DVD: "After a disastrous summer trip, Jack (Andrew Simpson, Rebellion) finds himself hitchhiking through the sun-drenched rural French countryside with nothing but his British passport. Unaware of dangers that are plaguing the roads, he tries without much success to get home. Along the way, he partners with another hitchhiker, a beautiful French girl, Véronique (Joséphine de La Baume, Kiss of the Damned). But when they accept a ride from a local oddball (Frédéric Pierrot, The Returned), the pair find themselves thrown in a deadly game of cat and mouse in which nothing is what it seems. His success came by the exceptional partnership with George Footit, since their duo would embody the white clown and the auguste (happy clown). One of the more intriguing thrillers I’ve seen in some time is Road Games, which was written and directed by Abner Pastoll and recently debuted on VOD courtesy of IFC Midnight. Starring Andrew Simpson, Joséphine de La Baume, Barbara Crampton, and Frédéric Pierrot, the film begins as a whodunit road movie and is later infused with some unexpectedly fun slasher undertones.
Daily Dead recently sat down with both Pastoll and genre legend Crampton to hear more about their collaboration, Pastoll’s approach to crafting the film’s mystery, their experiences shooting Road Games, and much more.
Congrats on making a movie that keeps you guessing and takes a few unexpected turns. Abner, what were your inspirations behind this story and your approach to really toying with viewers?
Abner Pastoll: In terms of playing with people’s suspicions, those inspirations are totally from Hitchcock’s films because he would always do that.

For those of you genre fans out there always on the lookout for interesting horror and sci-fi films to enjoy from the comfort of your own home, March’s VOD selections feature several great indie movies that should make for some entertaining viewings this month.

Hitchin’ a Ride: Pastoll’s Debut an Assortment of Tropes
No, it’s not a remake of the 1981 Richard Franklin thriller starring Stacy Keach and Jamie Lee Curtis, but Abner Pastoll’s debut borrows the title, along with elements from a number of other, far better narratives for Road Games. Curiously, for most of the running time, his characters are actually not even on the road, but this is only one of several aggravating details in a film laboring to conjure thrills solely through the use of withholding pertinent information from the audience for an improbable reveal. Though it has all the right elements to convey technical proficiency, this is a watered down genre treatment which does disservice to notable cast members, which includes amongst its talent the strange plumage of 80s cult star Barbara Crampton.

I love movies like Road Games that seem to toy with you from beginning to end, and yet, sometimes those are the hardest films to discuss in a review because you never want to reveal too much for potential viewers. That being said, writer/director Abner Pastoll does a fantastic job of playing up suspicions throughout Road Games, a film that’s shrouded in a dubious sense of mystery and has a bit of a Hitchcockian sensibility to it as well. Its ending may be a bit divisive to many, but I dug the direction Pastoll goes with his surprising, take-no-prisoners finale.
Road Games follows British hitchhiker Jack (Andrew Simpson) as he makes his way through the sun-soaked countryside in France, traveling with only his passport and doing everything he can to get back home to England after his idyllic vacation goes horribly wrong. Along the way, he crosses paths...

Jack’s (Andrew Simpson) European trip has slowed down some since hitting the French countryside as the number of passing motorists willing to give him a lift has dwindled to zero. He catches a distracting break when a car stops — not to pick him up, but to drop off Véronique (Joséphine de La Baume) after a violent argument with her boyfriend — giving him someone to talk with while awaiting the next good Samaritan. The two hit it off despite his limited French vocabulary, and he quickly learns why getting a ride has been so difficult. A serial killer has been stalking the rural roads. At this point some of you more familiar with the slasher/killer genre might suspect this film is a remake of Richard Franklin’s identically-titled Australian chiller from 1981 starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Stacy Keach. It is not. The pair are saved — at least temporarily — when a man named Grizard (Frédéric Pierrot) picks...

Somewhere between The Hitcher and High Tension exists Abner Pastoll’s Road Games, a bright, colorful descent into hitchhiking madness. Of course, with the mention of Alexandre Aja’s *arguably* mind-bending thriller, one can assume there’s more to Pastoll’s story than meets the eye. A killer terrorizes lonely travelers begging for a quick ride, but his/her identity remains masked, because he/she could be any of the (few) characters we’ve already encountered. For an hour and a half, Pastoll unfolds this countryside”Whodunit” caper – one littered with distracting red herrings – but, herein lies the problem: the mystery itself isn’t very mysterious.
Andrew Simpson stars as Jack, a ride-needing wanderer who can’t seem to catch a break. While seeking transportation, he’s joined by a female companion named Véronique (Joséphine de La Baume), who gets thrown out of a car after bickering with its male driver.

The haunting small town mystery of "The Returned" is back for an even eerier second season, and we've got an exclusive clip featuring a meeting between two men at a wry and lonely diner -- one of the few still left in town that is still open, but doesn't have much to offer. While the meeting and conversation between the two men seems fairly casual, tensions and stakes are high, as the conversation steers more towards an interview, or interrogation. With an ominous feeling of suspense in the air, the scene is just as perplexing and mystifying as the diner the two men are sitting down in. "The Returned" is directed by Frabrice Gobert, starring Anne Consigny, Frédéric Pierrot and Céline Sallete. The second season premieres Saturday, October 31 at 10pm on SundanceTV. Warning: This article contains spoilers that some readers may prefer to avoid.
Good news - The Returned is back, with its beautiful people, Gallic drama and Mogwai chords. Bad news - the first series aired in 2013 and, two years on, all we can remember is "the Lake Pub".
Great news - Digital Spy has prepared a handy guide, for anyone looking to refresh their memories ahead of tonight's (superb) series two premiere:
The basics
The dead have begun returning to life in a small French mountain town. But these are no flesh-chomping zombies - beyond a ferocious appetite, the 'Returned' appear perfectly healthy and normal.
The town, though, is plagued by other strange phenomena - power outages, the reservoir's water level dropping dramatically and strange marks appearing on the bodies of both the living and dead.
What happened in series one's finale?
Remember Toni (Grégory Gadebois), manager of the Lake Pub?...

While the dead returning to life has traditionally been the foray of the horror genre, a number of movies and tv shows over the years have used the premise to tell different kinds of stories. Among the latter group is the French television series The Returned. Also known as Les Revenants, the show made its debut in 2012, growing its fans in ensuing years, with many eagerly anticipating the second season.
Following the airing of the second season premiere and second episode at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival, a premiere date has now been announced. The second season will once again air on SundanceTV, beginning on October 31st at 10 pm Et. The second season synopsis is as follows.

The Returned will finally be back on our screens this autumn - but the spooky French thriller is shifting channels.
The unorthodox zombie series is moving from Channel 4 to More4 for its second series.
It's been two years since The Returned gripped the nation with its tale of deceased French folk coming back from the dead.
Set six months on from the events of the first series, series two will see Adele (Clotilde Hesme) about to give birth to Simon's (Pierre Perrier) child.
Meanwhile Lena (Jenna Thiam) and her father Jerome (Frederic Pierrot) search desperately for Claire (Anne Consigny) and Camille (Yara Pilartz).
Matters are complicated further when a stranger named Berg (Laurent Lucas) - who knows more than he claims - arrives into town. Worse still, a new wave of resurrections could be about to occur.
Channel 4 is yet to confirm when new episodes will air on...

Set in rural France (but shot for the most part here in the UK) Road Games sees hitchhiker Jack rescues Véronique from a road rage altercation. Alone on the road the twosome decide to travel together for safety’s sake after learning a serial killer is cutting a murderous swathe through the region. Tired and hungry they decide against their better judgment to take up an offer to stay the night at a mysterious elderly couple’s mansion…

Ever wonder what would happen if your loved ones returned from the dead? A&E’s The Returned, from Lost’s Carlton Cuse and True Blood’s Raelle Tucker, attempts to answer that question.
Adapted from the acclaimed French drama Les Revenants, The Returned is an English-language 10-episode retelling centered on the residents of a sleepy town whose lives are forever changed when people who had died years earlier suddenly reappear without warning. For those who may have seen the original series, The Returned isn’t necessarily rewriting the script – and they’re Ok with that.
“I feel like Carlton brought some of what made [Les Revenants] so engaging into the American version and added some things to make it uniquely its own,” star Mark Pellegrino tells ETonline. “There was the sense of mystery that pervades not only the universe but the characters. The show is unapologetic about not answering questions that you have. Even in the...

Valérie Donzelli, the actress-turned director who we most recently caught as a supporting player in the garishly dressed Saint Laurent, Bertrand Bonello’s stylized biopic might have found a taste for risky content as cameras are set to lense next week on her fourth feature film. The Cineuropa folks report that Donzelli has completed the casting on Marguerite et Julien, a project that François Truffaut flirted with but ultimately passed on. Completing the cast we find Aurélia Petit (The Science of Sleep), vet thesps Sami Frey and Geraldine Chaplin, reuniting with her fellow Declaration of War‘s Frédéric Pierrot and Bastien Bouillon who join the previously announced duo of Anaïs Demoustier (you can find her in Ozon’s latest, the recently acquired Cohen Media’s The New Girlfriend) and Jérémie Elkaïm (full-time collaborator with Donzelli who we also discovered in Declaration of War). • It looks like Mike Epps may finally get the chance to play legendary stand-up comedian Richard Pryor after all. The comic has emerged as the front-runner to play the part in a biopic for The Weinstein Company directed by Lee Daniels (The Butler). Epps was previously signed on to play Pryor back in 2005 and met with the late comedian while he was still alive to prepare for the role, but that project fell through. Satisfying the hunger of movie and television consumers in dire need of original content grows more difficult with each and every passing year. Not only do the people who produce content want to release more of the same, but the very fact of the matter is that nearly every story has already been told. Chicago – “Young & Beautiful” may have people rethinking the phrase, “Oh, to be young and beautiful again.” Well, maybe the “young” part, since we seldom don’t hear lamentations of the loss of beauty. Here’s a film that reminds us that wisdom not only comes with age, but also with mistakes.
It also serves as a reminder that in our youth, we often get stuck in irreversibly bad patterns that hurt ourselves and the ones who love us. Writer/director Francois Ozon’s latest leaves us to decide whether or not the young and beautiful protagonist has any regret for her rash and vacant erotic adventures.

Seventeen-year-old Isabelle (Marine Vacth) is deflowered during her family's Summer holiday in the south of France, and by the time Autumn rolls around she has taken up a career as a prostitute. With an online profile that lists her age as 20, the underage call girl quickly builds a client base of wealthy old men. Unafraid to meet these strange men in hotel rooms, Isabelle does not seem to comprehend the inherent risks of her career. All the while, Isabelle's mother (Géraldine Pailhas) and step-father (Frédéric Pierrot) are utterly clueless about her secret life. Writer-director François Ozon's Young & Beautiful intimately observes Isabelle during the four seasons of the seventeenth year of her life, separating each season into a distinct chapter featuring a song by Françoise Hardy -- "The Love Of A Boy," "When Even Try?," "First Encounter," and "I Am Me." Ozon focuses the eerily nonchalant attitude of a modern teenager,...

Only French cinema could get away with Jeune & Jolie. Beneath its stylish, sexy glow lies an essential absurdity and obtuseness
François Ozon's fervent and well-acted drama about a 17-year-old girl exploring her sexuality by becoming a high-class call girl is very watchable … and entirely ridiculous. It has a stylish gloss and sexy glow, no doubt about it. Only French cinema could get away with it.
Yet once the credits roll, its essential absurdity and obtuseness become apparent: it's a solemn belle de jour tale with a touch of David Hamilton softcore, existing outside the grim reality of vulnerable women being abused and trafficked.
Abdellatif Kechiche's Blue Is the Warmest Colour was attacked as a movie for middle-aged men; that charge could be made far more powerfully against Jeune & Jolie.
Yet it has to be said that Marine Vacth is excellent as Isabelle, the schoolgirl with a secret life as a €500 prostitute,...

Chicago – They have already made a statement in 2013 by broadcasting Jane Campion’s brilliant “Top of the Lake” and the riveting “Rectify” but Sundance Channel goes for the hat trick, starting tonight, as they debut the French supernatural hit “The Returned,” a brilliant twist on the undead genre that places the emphasis on mood, dread, and emotion instead of the unexpected.
The subtitled program can get a bit melodramatic but it’s more often mesmerizing in its effort to capture a small town in which the past seems to have been erased. It’s like “Broadchurch” meets “The Walking Dead,” but even that doesn’t capture the unique tone and subtle accomplishments of this gem.
Television Rating: 4.5/5.0

It plays with horror tropes -- a figure glimpsed in a reflection and gone when a character turns around, lights flickering on and off -- but it skips the scares in favor of emotional turmoil. For instance, when Camille (Yara Pilartz), a 15-year-old girl who wakes up at the location of the bus accident in which she died four years earlier, comes home, her mother Claire (Anne Consigny) reacts with stunned, trembling acceptance. Since her daughter's death, Claire's turned to religion while her estranged husband Jérôme (Frédéric Pierrot) has sought solace in grief counseling, and Claire wonders, with some uncertainty, if Camille's resurrection may not be the result of her prayers. But Camille isn't the...
