In life, spewing hate comes easy; finding the good takes effort. That’s my mantra for “Revenge of the Remakes.” Get dirty and identify value where others hastily — maybe unfairly — laid harsh criticisms. Any remake, in any genre, faces biased outrage from peanut galleries who refuse to remove their nostalgia goggles. It’s easy to prey on the hate clickers out there, which is why I use this column as a voice for the misunderstood and wrongly delegitimized. A remake isn’t trash because it’s a remake, there’s more to the equation.
That said (and believed), not all remakes are created equal. With soaring highs come subterranean lows. Sometimes remakes are nothing but a copy-and-paste cash grab, devoid of creative ambitions. These examples fuel smear campaigns about remakes at large — and today, we’re dissecting one of the worst.

Stephen Emery, a producer at Big Swell Entertainment, died unexpectedly following a workout at a Los Angeles gym on Saturday. He was 46.
A cause of death has not been determined, but Emery had survived a heart attack five years ago.
“Everyone that had the pleasure to know Stephen Emery is heartbroken over the sudden loss of one of our own,” said Big Swell founder Andy Horwitz. “Stephen was much more than an invaluable producer, he was also an irreplaceable friend.”
Prior to Big Swell, which was launched last year, Emery was Head of Film & TV at The Solution Entertainment Group from 2016 until 2022, developing, packaging, and producing a wide slate for both film and television. Talk about reviving a franchise from the grave! Twenty-six years (26!) after Arnold Schwarzenegger’s 1996 action film Eraser comes a franchise reboot featuring none of the original cast and with two veterans of franchise reboots and Dtv sequels at the helm, director John Pogue and writer Michael D. Weiss. Yet whilst both filmmakers have experience in reboots and sequels they also have some other fantastic movies under their belts – Pogue wrote all Three of The Skulls movies (the second being a personal favourite) and Weiss penned some classic Dtv movies that went on to be staples of the early days of budget DVDs – Octopus and it’s sequel, Crocodile and US Seals 2… Yes, Eraser: Reborn has quite the pedigree.

Deep Blue Sea 3 has hit the internet, and one of the most frequent postings about it, aside from links to illicit downloads and queries of when the hell Deep Blue Sea 2 slipped into existence, are comments from viewers observing how surprisingly enjoyable they found it.
Deep Blue Sea 2 saw a shady biotech company experimenting on bull sharks to enhance their intelligence to develop mind-expanding pharmaceuticals, and ended with several of their number escaping into the ocean. This third movie takes place on an almost entirely abandoned fishing island where scientist Emma Collins and her team are researching the effects of climate change, when an assortment of stubbled manly men, led by Emma’s ex, come swaggering over the horizon as they attempt to track and capture the genetically modified predators, leading to the blue sea turning red in explosions of carnage.

On July 28, 1999 Renny Harlin’s Deep Blue Sea swam into theaters and was the first big shark movie to terrify audiences. Starring Samuel L. The first trailer for Deep Blue Sea 3 ticks a lot of boxes. Its characters yell “shark!” and “get out of the water!” a team of marine professionals are clearly in over their heads; there’s an obligatory jump scare towards the end, and the big fish occasionally go ‘nom’. That’s all we need, so we’re officially on board for this next underwater adventure.
We acknowledge, though, that we may have lost you at ‘Deep Blue Sea 3‘. Indeed, the second film in the franchise arrived direct-to-video back in April 2018 as a ‘standalone sequel’ to Renny Harlin’s late-90s sci-fi horror, and really we can only assume that Darin Scott’s effort at a follow up did well enough on home release for Warner Bros to okay a third. On checking its impact, Deep Blue Sea 2 celebrated being “the only non-theatrical release to appear in the top...

We have a lot of love for 1999’s Deep Blue Sea, from Samuel L. Jackson’s performance to the somewhat bonkers plot. A direct-to-video sequel came out in 2018 and while it wasn’t particularly well received, a third entry in the series is now reportedly planned for Netflix.
We’ve known since last year that Deep Blue 3 is in development, and more recently that the sequel will be rated R and may be out this summer. It’s worth, then, taking a look at everything we know right now about Deep Blue Sea 3, from the plot to the cast.
First off, IMDb are listing a release date of July 28th, 2020, and as previously mentioned, the MPAA have granted the movie an R-rating. The latter certificate means that we should be getting plenty of genetically-enhanced shark gore, one of the strengths of the original 1990s film. If Deep Blue Sea 3...

"On these streets, all you have is the guy next to you." Lionsgate has released an official trailer for an indie crime action-drama titled Blood Brother, the latest film from writer/director John Pogue (Quarantine 2: Terminal and The Quiet Ones). Not to be confused with the award-winning documentary from a few years ago also titled Blood Brother, this film is about an ex-con who takes murderous revenge against childhood friends whom he believes let him take the fall for a crime they committed together. One of the friends, now a cop, risks his life to stop him. Blood Brother stars music artist Trey Songz, along with Jack Kesy, China Anne McClain, Hassan Johnson, Tanee McCall, and Fetty Wap. These kind of crime+action+friends movies are becoming a dime a dozen nowadays, and none of them really seem they're worth anyone's time. Bruce Willis is joining another untitled project.
The Hollywood star will reunite with his Cop Out writers Mark and Robb Cullen for an untitled comedy, reports Deadline. The Cullen brothers will helm and produce the movie.
When his pet Buddy is stolen by a notorious gang, the Los Angeles private investigator finds himself doing the gang's biddings while being chased by Samoan brothers and other characters as he sets out to bring back his beloved pet.
In Cop Out, Willis and Tracy Morgan play NYPD veteran cops Jimmy and Paul, who track down Paul's stolen memorabilia baseball card.
Just last week, it was announced that Willis is joining Woody Allen's untitled 2016 project alongside Blake Lively, Kristen Stewart and Jesse Eisenberg.
Back in April, Willis and director John Pogue exited Wake, which was reportedly shut down due to a lack of funds.

The Bruce Willis-fronted action thriller Wake has been in trouble for a while. Last month it came out that there was no more money to proceed, and now they.ve run into another major problem. Bruce Willis just bailed. According to Deadline, the Die Hard star has another commitment and delays in production and time constraints caused an already small window of opportunity to close. The trade also reports that the star is not the only one to abandon the sinking ship, as director John Pogue (The Quiet Ones) has joined him on the life raft. If the production wasn.t in dire straits before, it certainly is now after losing two fairly important pieces of the puzzle, like the star and the director. To call Wake a sinking ship might actually be a bit of a misnomer. It may already be resting on the bottom of the ocean.

If you happened to be a Bruce Willis fan excited by the prospect of two new action thrillers we heard about in January starring the Die Hard franchise lead, we have some bad news. It sounds like you're only going to see one of those projects come to fruition as Deadline reports production on Wake has been completely abandoned as Willis has left the project, and so has director John Pogue. The problem seems to be that there was a producer involved who was asked to leave the project in order for other financiers to come on board, but said producer just wouldn't stand down, and that led to the crumbling of the entire project. Producer and financier Avi Lerner (The Expendables franchise) even tried to fund the film himself after these issues came up, but it didn't work out. The film had a small window in which it needed...

Bruce Willis and director John Pogue have exited the Wake movie project.
The movie was recently shut down due to a lack of funds, after several failed attempts to resume production, Deadline reports.
Only five days of shooting were actually completed in Cleveland late February, before production was halted.
Financier Benaroya Pictures said it intended to get work back on track within two to three weeks on February 26, but it never happened.
Then on March 5, the Greater Cleveland Film Commission announced that filming would resume on March 23, which also failed to materialise.
Willis was due to play a violent man who returns to protect the community that formerly shunned him.
It's not yet clear whether the project will go on without the pair.

As happens to independent films from time to time, the production of John Pogue’s Wake has run out of cash and had to close down production. The film was shooting in Cleveland, one of my old stomping grounds, and it was the local paper, The Plain Dealer, that got the scoop.
If the film gets back on track and starts shooting again it will be an action thriller starring Bruce Willis as “a sociopath who battles a team of mercenaries following his brother’s funeral.” The character sound like the polar opposite kind of action man to Die Hard’s sobbing John McClane. Let it never be said that Bruno doesn’t have range.
Piper Perabo, Ben Kingsley and Ellen Burstyn also have roles in the picture, and presumably still will if things get moving again quickly enough.

The film is question is Wake, starring Willis and Ben Kingsley, and it's an independent film that was shooting in Cleveland, under the stewardship of director John Pogue. Piper Perabo and Ellen Burstyn are also in the cast.
However, in spite of the fact that the shoot was set to continue until mid-April, it's being reported that "funds have dried up", and production has been suspended.

One week into shooting in Cleveland, finance issues have forced Benaroya Films to temporarily halt production on the action thriller starring Bruce Willis.
Sources said the hiatus comes as producer-financier Michael Benaroya and his associates scramble to reconfigure the budget.
International Film Trust was at the Efm earlier this month shopping rights to the story of a sociopath who must defend his clan after he returns home for a family funeral on a remote island. John Pogue is the director.
Benaroya produces with Tobin Armbrust, David Alpert and Chris Cowles. CAA represents Us rights the film.
“Benaroya Pictures is working quickly to remedy the delay in production on the feature film Wake, and we are optimistic we will resume principal photography in approximately 2-3 weeks,” a spokesperson said.

The early cancellation of Covert Affairs has found the show’s leading lady, Piper Perabo, on the hunt for new projects. Thankfully, that hunt is now over, as the actress has signed on to co-star opposite Bruce Willis in director John Pogue’s upcoming thriller, Wake.
From screenwriter Chris Borrelli, Wake revolves around the Forrester family. When they reunite back at the family’s island homestead for a relative’s wake, they are unnerved by the arrival of the dead man’s brother, Red (Willis), who’s a diagnosed sociopath that made their lives a living hell until his disappearance years later. The tides change, however, when the family comes under attack from deadly associates of the deceased. Naturally, they’re glad to have Red and his bullish, sociopathic tendencies to protect them.

The halls are starting to hum softly here in Berlin as the European Film Market swings into gear. The first deals were announced yesterday before the event officially opened, with The Weinstein Co notably boarding Im Global’s The Man Who Made It Snow. This morning, FilmNation unveiled a series of offshore output deals for titles from Open Road, which will kick off with the Jamie Foxx/Michelle Monaghan-starrer Sleepless Nights.
Though it’s not likely to be a frenzy, and with currency concerns in the market internationally, Berlin should see more action in the coming days. Distributors are looking for product for 2016 and beyond, and some memorable buys have emerged here in recent years. In 2014, The Weinstein Company made a record-setting $7M deal for The Imitation Game which has now made about $140M worldwide and has an armful of Oscar nominations to boot.

Get ready stateside filmgoers, because the “phoners” (aka “crazies”) are coming to the Us. Stephen King fans know that the master of macabre doesn’t like using cell phones. His 2006 novel, Cell, is a cautionary tale about what can go wrong by pressing portable phones to our ears and keeping them close at hand in our pockets, and its unflinching subject matter contains flocks of murderous lunatics that would be right at home in Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later, George A. Romero’s The Crazies, or Simon Clark’s Blood Crazy.
We knew this unique King novel was getting the adaptation treatment, with King co-writing the screenplay and John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson in the lead roles, but we’re now one big step closer to seeing it on the silver screen, as Clarius Entertainment has acquired the Us rights to the movie.

Back towards the end of the summer of 2013, you may remember Bruce Willis saying that he was bored with starring in action movies again. It's happened before for the actor, and we though this might mean some more thoughtful, substantial performances from the actor. Instead, he's just churning out more of the same action thrillers we've seen time and time again, and now he's just signed on for two more. Deadline reports Willis is set to star in Extraction where he plays a former CIA operative, and a press release reveals the Die Hard franchise star will also lead Wake, from John Pogue, the director of The Quiet Ones. With Extraction, Willis no longer works for the CIA, and he just hasn't been the same since his wife was murdered (we've all been there, right?). Meanwhile, his son is set to follow in his footsteps as a young CIA operative,...

Where's Liam Neeson when you need him? Bruce Willis has joined the upcoming thriller "Extraction," but this time around, he's the one who needs saving. Willis will play a retired Secret Service man who's hard at work developing a secret weapon with his CIA operative son when he's kidnapped by terrorists - Willis, that is. When the government won't step in to help, his son goes rogue to rescues his pops himself.
"Extraction," which will begin filming in February, will be directed by Steven C. Miller, who recently directed the Santa-centric horror flick "Silent Night" in 2012. The real question is just how much screen time Willis will have in the film.
Willis already has a few more projects lined up, like John Pogue's "Wake" and an adaptation of Elmore Leonard's "Bandits." No matter what Sylvester Stallone has to stay about Bruce's work ethic, you can't deny the guy stays busy!

Bruce Willis is to start shooting new action flick Wake, for The Quiet Ones director John Pogue.
Bruce Willis starts work on his latest action-thriller, a film by the name of Wake, next month.
The shoot will get going in Cleveland, and Willis is taking on the role of Red Forrester, described as a "sociopath with no fear". He returns to his remote island home for his brother's wake, and finds the place under siege. Bottom line? He has to save the family that sent him away in the first place.
Promisingly, John Pogue is directing this one. He last helmed the solid Hammer horror movie The Quiet Ones, which came out last year. Before that, he had Quarantine 2 to his name.
There's no word yet as to who is co-starring with Bruce Willis in this one. More on Wake as we hear it, of course.

Exclusive: In a pre-emptive mid-six- against seven-figure deal, Universal has acquired an untitled action comedy pitch for Chris Morgan Productions, I’ve learned. Matt Allen and Chris Borrelli will pen the script based on their pitch — whose logline is being kept tightly under wraps. However, I’m told by a person close to the project that it has the potential of becoming an action comedy tentpole. Both writers have a long relationship with Fast & Furious franchise writer Morgan. He’ll produce via his Universal-based banner.
