Actor Gopal Datt, who has narrated Harishankar Parsai’s classic story ‘Ek Film Katha’, has said that our cinema lacks connection to the literature right now, and that it is very important to find that missing link.
The actor, who is known for his work in films like ‘Mujhe Kucch Kehna Hai’, ‘Tere Naam’, ‘Samrat & Co.’ and ‘Filmistaan’, recently reconnected with theatre and featured in the Seema Pahwa directorial, ‘Koi Baat Chale.’
This evocative literary anthology produced by Zee Theatre showcased six stories by iconic writers, and Gopal narrated ‘Ek Film Katha’.
The actor believes that the younger generation of filmmakers should maintain a connection with the works of eminent writers like Harishankar Parsai.
“What’s lacking in our cinema right now is a connection to literature. Old films still had that connection but now it is lost. The younger generation has no idea about the great writers in Indian literature.

Scholars have devoted tomes to it, politicians have waxed long about it, but it was an Urdu poet who furnished the most abiding, yet concise expression of the idea, history, and ethos of India. And that too in less than a dozen words – though with two compound formulations, while including his pen-name too: “Sarzameen-e-Hind par aqwam-e-alam ke ‘Firaq’ / Kafile baste gaye, Hindustan banta gaya.”
This composite and syncretic sentiment forms the bedrock of the poetry of Raghupati Sahai ‘Firaq Gorakhpuri’, considered among the foremost Urdu poets of all time, and one who enriched and further indigenised the tradition.
Equally fluent in Hindi and Urdu, Persian and Sanskrit, he incorporated elements from his deep, self-taught knowledge of the Vedic and Puranic ethos into his poetry.
If he could proclaim: “Meri ghutti mein padhi this ho ke hal Urdu zabaan/Jo bhi mein kehta gaya husn-e-bayan hota gaya”, he could also pen:...

Satyajit Ray is broadly regarded as one of the greatest directors of all time, and his acclaims support the claim. His works are mostly based on the Bengali language movie industry in India. However, he made two movies in the Hindi language, both based on the works of the famed author Munshi Premchand. “Sadgati,” a TV movie, is often considered amongst Ray’s least impressive movies. His first movie in the Hindi language, nevertheless, is a different story. “The Chess Players” is often included in the conversation of the best Ray films and is frequently said to be one of the most calculated movies made by the director.

Film Bazaar: Actress talks about how first-time feature director lured her to Idgah.
When first-time directors approach established actors, they need to convince them that they’re right for the role and not just bringing finance or kudos to the project, said actress Shabana Azmi speaking at Film Bazaar’s Producers Lab yesterday.
Azmi recently took the plunge with first-time feature director Piyush Panjuani in Idgah, an adaptation of Munshi Premchand’s short story, which is screening in Film Bazaar Recommends. She added that the fact she knew the source material also helped.
“I wasn’t convinced in the beginning but he persuaded me that he wanted me as an actor,” Azmi said. “Also he saw something that I could bring to the role that I hadn’t seen myself. The script has to be right but you also have to have perseverance.”

Film Bazaar: Films in rare languages, mockumentaries and a growing interest in genre filmmaking are some of the dominant themes in this year’s Film Bazaar Recommends.
Among the line-up are films such as The Gold Laden Sheep & The Sacred Mountain filmed in the Pahari language, spoken in the Himalayas, and The Golden Wing (Sonar Baran Pakhi) made in Rajbanshi, which is spoken in the northeast Indian state of Assam.
“The northeast of India and the lives of the people in the mountains seems to inspire directors from this region, as well as other parts of India, perhaps because the landscape is so cinematic,” says Film Bazaar Recommends and Wip Lab curator Deepti DCunha.
This year’s line-up also includes The Bioscopewala, loosely based on Rabindranath Tagore’s short story Kabuliwala, which is partly shot in the Dari language, spoken in Afghanistan. Produced by Mumbai-based Sunil Doshi, the film stars Danny Denzongpa, Gitanjali Thapa, Tisca Chopra...

The vision behind 5th Veda, cultural hub, an initiative by Subhash Ghai, Founder & Chairman of Whistling Woods International (Wwi) is to connect the younger generation with the art and technique of various classical art forms including drama, painting, poetry etc. To accomplish this motive, Wwi organised two theatre plays namely ‘Shatranj Ke Khiladi’ & ‘Bade Bhai Sahab’, paying a tribute to renowned writer Munshi Premchand, this evening.
The 5th Veda cultural event began in the presence of over 550 students of Wwi with an introduction to ‘Drama’ being the art form of this week. Since the event was part of a cultural hub, an Av on spiritual reality was played followed by an Av on drama which portrayed drama as one of the many popular art forms and enlightened the students on its origin and history of its progression.

Khandhar (The Ruins) (1984)
My friends are amazed that I should rate a Mrinal Sen film among the very best in world cinema. In fact, there are two films of Mrinal-da that I rate very high—Oka oorie katha (a film in Telugu language based on the Munshi Premchand tale Kafan) made in 1977 and Khandhar (made in Hindi language). These are two films, for me, which raise the bar of quality of Indian cinema, decades after they were made.
Mrinal Sen is an acknowledged Leftist. Yet a viewer of Khandhar will not come across Communist propaganda or even a red flag. There are no political speeches. The Mrinal-da of the overtly political Chorus-that won awards at Moscow and Berlin festivals apart from top Indian national honors--and Calcutta ’71 cannot be recognized as such in Khandhar.
Why then do I rate Khandhar so high? Is it because it won the Golden Hugo...
