“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” is not slowing down for its last turn at the Emmys. For its fifth and final season, the period comedy on Amazon Prime Video is finishing exactly at the same amount it started with, at 14 Emmy nominations, almost a fifth of the streamer’s 2023 total of 68. This is the longest-spanning season for the show, covering five decades in nine episodes detailing the title character’s ascending career and destructive personal life. Among its mentions are its bid for Best Comedy Series, an honor that it has received its entire run (it won in 2018), as well as major categories it has succeeded in years past. Read on for a closer look at “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’s” 14 Emmy nominations.

When music supervisor Robin Urdang read the first episode of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” she knew she was in for a challenge.
The pilot of Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino’s hourlong comedy called for a song from Barbra Streisand, an artist whose work rarely clears for film, let alone television. It immediately set a standard for Urdang’s working relationship with the Palladinos and the level of communication and adaptability she’d need on the Prime Video series.
Urdang, along with supervising sound editor/re-recording mixer Ron Bochar, production mixer Mathew Price, and the “Maisel” music and lyrics team of Curtis Moore and Thomas Mizer, spoke to IndieWire as part of the season’s Consider This series about their Emmy-winning work on the indelible comedy and specific challenges and joys of Season 5. It didn’t take long for the conversation to turn to Episode 4, “Susan,” which features not one...

Alex Borstein is known to fans of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” for her hilarious portrayal of agent Susie Myerson, and to viewers of “Family Guy” for providing the voice of Lois Griffin for more than two decades.
Now, those fans are going to experience a whole other side of Borstein when she takes to the stage for “Alex Borstein: Corsets & Clown Suits”, a new Prime Video comedy special that’s described as “a deeply personal and wildly fictitious account of one woman’s attempt to f**k with perception,” offering “a night of comedy, music, and waxing rhapsodic.”

Amazon is deepening its relationship with Alex Borstein.
In fact, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel star is readying her first Amazon Original comedy special, which she’s titled Alex Borstein: Corsets & Clown Suits. It’s slated to hit on April 18th, four days after Maisel debuts its fifth and final season on the service. Fittingly, it was filmed at The Wolford Theatre, the fictional burlesque club from Maisel‘s fourth season, and relied on the award-winning crafts team from the show.
The special, which comes as Borstein and her co-stars embark on another crowded awards season, is being billed as the three-time Emmy winner’s “deeply personal and wildly fictitious account of one woman’s attempt to f*** with perception.” Equal parts provocative and whimsical, the self-penned performance will include assists from Borstein’s muse and maestro, Barcelona-native musicians, Eric Mills and Salva Rey. It is the first special from the former Mad TV star.

“The biggest challenge for season four, I think, was dealing with the limitations that were set by Covid in New York,” says “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” production designer Bill Groom, who earned an Emmy nomination this year for Best Production Design for a Period or Fantasy Program for the episodes “Maisel vs. Lennon: The Cut Contest” and “How Do You Get to Carnegie Hall.” So how do you adapt when you don’t have access to the locations you would normally use? Build it yourself, of course. We talked to Groom as part of our “Meet the Experts” panel of Emmy-nominated production designers. Watch our interview above.

“‘Maisel’ does nothing small,” admits production mixer Mathew Price with a laugh as he reflects on his latest Emmy nomination for the Amazon series “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” He and re-recording mixer Ron Bochar celebrate the nomination this year — which they share with colleagues George A. Lara and Stewart Lerman — especially because of the challenges they faced while working during the pandemic. Even though there were new limitations, both mixers were amazed that the show continued to go big in terms of story, production, and the number of background performers rather than scale down. Watch our exclusive video interview.
Bochar and Price are nominated for sound mixing for the Season 4 finale, “How Do You Get to Carnegie Hall?.” Price shares that he thinks of this installment as “the best episode the show’s ever produced, dramatically.” He explains, “The drama and the emotion the show reaches is very real and earned.

In the animated feature category, Pixar’s “Soul” added another win to its shelf. Additional Cas winners included “The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend A Broken Heart,” Disney’s “The Mandalorian” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.”
During the virtual event, Sound Mixer William B. Kaplan, Cas was honored with the Cinema Audio Society’s highest accolade, the Cas Career Achievement Award. “Sound of Metal” has won the award for sound mixing in a live-action motion picture at the 57th annual Cas Awards, which were presented by the Cinema Audio Society in a virtual ceremony on Saturday.
The film beat three other Oscar nominees in the Best Sound category, “Greyhound,” “Mank” and “News of the World,” along with “The Trial of the Chicago 7.”
The Cas Awards winner has gone on to win the Oscar in the Best Sound Mixing category for the last three years in a row, and five times in the last decade. But this year the Oscars combined Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing into a single Best Sound category, so the Cas’ effectiveness at predicting the Oscars has yet to be determined.
On Friday, “Greyhound” won the Motion Picture Sound Editors’ Golden Reel Award in the category that in the past most closely corresponded to the Oscars sound-editing award.

“Clarity is always the number one thing for us,” says re-recording mixer Ron Bochar of his work on “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” The rapid pace of Amazon’s period comedy series demands crystal clear sound to make the dialogue land. “They talk fast,” agrees production sound mixer Mathew Price. Though he notes that the saving grace with the pace of the line delivery is that the actors always “stick to the script,” allowing for an ease in recording. But it’s not always so easy to maintain clarity within the other elements of this massive production. Watch the exclusive video interview above.

Last night, two important precursors for specific technical categories gave out their awards, helping to potentially inform how two Oscar fields may end up turning out. The pair of groups are the Cinema Audio Society, which ties into Best Sound Mixing at the Academy Awards, while the Makeup Artists and Hair Stylists Guild obviously ties into Best Makeup and Hairstyling at the Oscars. Did these results clear up any races? Well, they gave us some frontrunners, but I don’t think anything is locked up. Not with how this year has gone, at least. That being said, these were the expected outcomes yesterday, so take that into consideration as well. The Cinema Audio Society (or Cas) top prize went to Bohemian Rhapsody, taking the category of Live Action Motion Picture. The animated winner was Isle of Dogs, while the Documentary victor was Free Solo. This sets up Bohemian Rhapsody to...

“Bohemian Rhapsody” (live action), “Free Solo” (documentary), and Wes Anderson’s stop-motion “Isle of Dogs” (upsetting the animated “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse”) were the top sound-mixing winners at Saturday’s 55th annual Cas Awards (at the InterContinental Hotel).
In terms of the Oscar race, the popular Freddie Mercury biopic, starring Best Actor favorite Rami Malek, strengthened its frontrunning status. The emotional Live Aid concert footage, in particular, benefits from the thunderous IMAX presentation.

Nominations for the 41st Annual Annie Awards were announced and "Frozen" and "Monsters University" led the pack with 10 nominations each. "Despicable Me 2" and "The Croods" followed closely with 9 noms each.

It was in those five days that the dictatorship of Muammar Gaddafi received its final blows, but forces within the hotel refused to believe it-- and kept the journalists hostage in the belief that Gaddafi was busy eliminating the rebel forces, and not the other way around. BBC's Matthew Price reported today on what went on in the meantime-- how the reporters ate, slept, lived, and hope to be freed soon.

For the last few decades, auteur Terrence Malick has been making films that question faith. There was The Thin Red Line which Matt Price brilliantly described as "the most spiritual war movie ever conceived," which Malick followed up with The New World, a film as much about organized religion vs. spirituality as it was a retelling of the white man's first rough years in the new world. Now, in what seems like lightning speed turn-around for a director known for taking years to complete his masterpieces, comes The Tree of Life, a much buzzed about epic forty years in the making. You never know what you’re going to get at the Toronto International Film Festival, just that you’re gonna have to pay for it. I bought my tickets like a month before they had even published the list of films playing – I and a bazillion (down, it seems, from the gajillions of previous non-economic-downturn years) other folks like movies just that freakin’ much – and will gladly do so again next year. For some reason.
As you’ve seen here on movieset.com, thesubstream crashed as best we could the Midnight Madness section of Tiff this year, making little documentaries about what we think is the best movie-going experience around, reviewing 10 of the weirdest, scariest genre flicks made this year, helping people navigate the byzantine ticket-buying processes and talking to people from all over North America that take their vacation...

Uninhibited, enlightening, ridiculous - comedian Jason Nash's latest character The Shaman is like that guy you should have left at Bonnaroo. It's hard not to watch this cosmic train wreck of a man trying desperately to maintain an ephemeral existence surrounded by the sobering responsibilities of modern Los Angeles life. That's really just a fancy way of saying he's a lazy roommate. The other end of that roommate coin is Matt Price, a comedian Nash has worked with on his basement podcast, Guys With Feeling, and who capably pulls of the straight man to Nash's joker. Nash steps up with a unique spin on the Will Ferrell-popularized flabby everyman on mission routine. He's the mushroom-toting hippy version that the more jocky Ferrell hasn't nailed yet. For more on the production and secret tidbits of the series, take another look at our interview with Jason earlier this spring, where we learned,...
