Henry Jaglom’s 1971 film is a bit of magic realism that performed a vanishing act at the box office. It remains a fascinating curio, bringing together old school genius/magician Orson Welles with an emerging Hollywood vanguard embodied by Jack Nicholson. Tuesday Weld stars as a lonely dreamer with a tenuous relationship to reality while Gwen Welles and Firesign Theater’s Phil Proctor make up a small but reliably quirky cast.

Exclusive: Audible is launching a Cold War-era scripted comedy podcast series from Paul Young’s Make Good Content. The Amazon-owned audio service has set Operation Cordelia, created by Berlin-based writer-director Kevin Napier and produced by Young.
The series, which launches September 9, stars Luka Jones (Shrill), Marin Ireland (The Umbrella Academy), Sasheer Zamata (Home Economics), Andy Daly (Veep), James Urbaniak (Venture Brothers), voice-over legend Phil Proctor (Firesign Theatre) and audiobook veterans Scott Brick, John Lee, Ray Porter and Simon Vance.
Set in the early 1970s, the espionage comedy follows the CIA’s most emotionally unstable case officer, voiced by Jones, as he attempts to stop a mass terror attack in West Berlin, all told using “found audio” such as news reports, tapped phone calls, bugged offices, and people secretly wearing wires.
Napier is best known for his work on FX’s Married and Young from Comedy Central’s Reno 911 and Key and Peele.

Amazon Women on the Moon
Blu ray
Kino Lorber
1987 / 85 Min. / 1:85
Starring Lots of Actors
Cinematography by Daniel Pearl
Directed by Joe Dante, Carl Gottlieb, Peter Horton, John Landis, Robert K. Weiss
Mark Twain said “If you don’t like the weather in New England now, just wait a few minutes.” That applies just as well to 1987’s Amazon Women on the Moon, John Landis’s unofficial sequel to Kentucky Fried Movie and the bastard child of Joe Dante and Jon Davison’s The Movie Orgy. Like those back-handed tributes to the disreputable entertainments of our youth, Amazon Women is a smorgasbord of comedy skits, some served up just right and others pretty half-baked—but a judicious use of the remote control and patience rewards; overall the result is a good-natured vacation for the mind with three or four laugh-out-loud vaudeville sequences and a couple of bona-fide short-form classics. The...

Fred Willard, best known for his roles in Best in Show, This Is Spinal Tap, Everybody Loves Raymond, and Modern Family, died of natural causes at the age of 86, according to Variety.
“It is with a heavy heart that I share the news my father passed away very peacefully last night at the fantastic age of 86 years old,” his daughter Hope Willard tweeted on Saturday. “He kept moving, working and making us happy until the very end. We loved him so very much! We will miss him forever.”
Willard first came into national consciousness as the sidekick to Martin Mull’s host on the nightly Fernwood 2 Night. He is well known as part of the revolving troupe of actors – including Michael McKean, Harry Shearer, Catherine O’Hara and Eugene Levy – assembled by director Christopher Guest.
“How lucky that we all got to enjoy Fred Willard’s gifts,” Guest’s wife,...

Norman Lloyd will turn 100 on November 8 but he shows no signs of slowing down. On Sunday he starred in a production of George Bernard Shaw’s Heartbreak House staged by Cart, the California Artists Radio Theatre and directed by its founder, the indomitable Peggy Webber. He brought his customary vigor and booming voice to the acid-tongued character of Captain Shotover–who is supposed to be a mere 88 years old—and wowed an audience packed with friends, fans, and colleagues. Appearing with Norman were Ed Asner, Samantha Eggar, Paul Keith, Monte Markham, Diane Mercer, Phil Proctor, Charlotte Rae, Charles Shaughnessy, and Jane Windsor, with John Harlan announcing and Tony Palermo doing...

In my apparent continuing quest to interview all the great voice actors living today (because they are the most fun, okay?), I now bring you my interview with the talented and Emmy-winning Maurice Lamarche, a.k.a. The Brain, Squit, Kif Kroker, Morbo, Lrrr, several Futurama robots, Dr. Egon Spengler, Dizzy Devil, Yosemite Sam, Mr. Freeze, Victor von Doom, General Var Suthra, Mortimer Mouse, Chief Quimby, and more.
It was a real pleasure to speak with Maurice, who I’ve been listening to in various guises since I was a wee thing (I was a big Inspector Gadget fan as a child; and then with Animaniacs, Pinky and the Brain, and Futurama being amongst my other favorite shows through the years, I guess I’ve pretty much been listening to Maurice all my life!). It was also great to see him do many of his excellent voices and impressions both during the interview,...

"This is a local shop, for local people. There's nothing for you here!"
It's been over a decade since The League of Gentlemen came to an end on the BBC after three incredibly dark and incredibly funny series. It's been eight years since we finally bid farewell to the show's characters in the bonkers movie spin-off Apocalypse.
However, one of the show's creators Reece Shearsmith gave hope to the show's fans yesterday that there might be a reunion on the cards, tweeting a picture of three of the show's writers (or is it possibly four?) posing together.
Digital Spy presents you five reasons why the League of Gentlemen comeback must happen.
1. We still need the rest of the rules for Go Johnny Go Go Go Go...
We know it's "a cross between Hoover and 8 Men Down", but we're still a little in the dark as to rules on the wildcards.

Written by John Antrobus, Adapted by Charles Wood, based on the play by Spike Milligan and John Antrobus
Featuring (in order of height) Rita Tushingham, Dudley Moore, Harry Secombe, Arthur Lowe, Roy Kinnear, Spick Milligan, Ronald Fraser, Jimmy Edwards, Michael Hordern, Peter Cook, Ralph Richardson
If listing cast members by order of height seems rather absurd, welcome to The Bed Sitting Room. That’s how the film opens and it just gets stranger from there. It’s possibly the oddest post apocalyptic tale ever filmed, short of Six String Samurai, though not as much fun.
After the credits roll, the film opens on a BBC anchorman (Thornton), dressed in a suit from mid-chest up, (Thornton) knocking at a makeshift door in the middle of a field of mud. Invited in by the inhabitant, the anchorman squats behind a hollowed out television and announces the third (or...

Comedy has lost one of its great innovators -- Firesign Theatre founding member Peter Bergman died Friday, March 9, 2012 due to complications from leukemia. He and his cohorts reinvented comedy with surreal, multi-layered socio-political critiques and wild wordplay. Phil Austin, Bergman, David Ossman, and Philip Proctor debuted as the Firesign Theatre in 1966 and became cult heroes by breaking or ignoring boundaries with their surreal, complexly layered material. Their work forms an ongoing critique of modern society, media saturation, and technological alienation, but they are far from overly intellectual, lacing their routines with crazy puns, twisted pop-culture references, and warped -- or invented -- folk sayings and catchphrases. To appreciate their Dadaist comedy requires a long attention span, willingness to follow free associations, and attention to detail.
The prolific quartet dissolved in the '80s, though a 1985 album reunited three members. Proctor and Bergman also worked as a duo for a while.

America Lost And Found: The Bbs Story (Criterion) Perhaps the best DVD box set released this year, this ultimate cinefile stocking stuffer offered up by Criterion, the Rolls-Royce of home video labels, features seven seminal works from the late ‘60s-early ‘70s that were brought to life by cutting edge producers Bert Schneider, Steve Blauner and director/producer Bob Rafelson, the principals of Bbs Productions. In chronological order: Head (1968) star the Monkees, the manufactured (by Rafelson, et al), American answer to the Beatles who, like it or not, did make an impact on popular culture, particularly in this utterly surreal piece of cinematic anarchy (co-written by Jack Nicholson, who has a cameo), which was largely dismissed upon its initial release, but is now regarded as a counterculture classic. Easy Rider (1969) is arguably regarded as the seminal ‘60s picture, about two hippie drug dealers (director Dennis Hopper...

We’re partnering with the Austin Classical Guitar Society next week for a pair of events that will be absolutely transplendent. On Wednesday, June 23 at 8pm at the Long Center, we’re partnering on a performance by the Grammy Winning La Guitar Quartet with Phil Proctor. Following that show, our Rolling Roadshow is presenting the classical guitar movie Crossroads with the much loved “Master Pancake Theater.” This is going to be outside the Long Center on the terrace, and will be Free and open to the public!
Tim League, big wig of the Alamo Drafthouse, is especially excited and proud about this event, and he wants to send out this statement about this great little festival:
“I wanted to alert everyone to a point of Austin civic pride that you may not know about: The Austin Classical Guitar Society. We are home to by far the largest and most active...

Full indecent disclosure. I cannot be impartial in describing the Firesign Theatre. I cannot be definitive. And I am not responsible, for those familiar with these four owners of vast tracts of comedic surreal estate in recordings, video, film, and the stage would agree: Phil Proctor, Peter Bergman, Phil Austin and David Ossman are conceptually in another world while inhabiting this one. To celebrate the 40th anniversary of one of their most popular pieces, the far noir "Nick Danger, Third Eye," Firesign shall run laughshod Oct. 14-17, in an increasingly rare live performance at Hollywood's Barnsdall Gallery Theatre. My first headlong dive face forward into the Firesign past came at San Francisco State, where a group of actors, as an assignment, recreated the Nick Danger segment from their album, How Can You Be in Two Places at Once when You're Not...
