Indian filmmaker Imtiaz Ali’s Netflix original film “Amar Singh Chamkila” is a hit for the streamer, bowing at No. 1 across South Asia and No. 5 on its global Top 10 chart.
The film is a biopic of Punjabi musician Amar Singh Chamkila (Diljit Dosanjh), who rose from obscurity working in a socks manufacturing factory to becoming the most sought after performer in the region alongside his wife Amarjot Kaur (Parineeti Chopra). Chamkila’s suggestive lyrics that were rooted in rural Punjabi life were described as vulgar by many, and he came under pressure from religious and political groups to stop and received death threats. His local musical contemporaries were jealous of his success. In 1988, Chamkila, Kaur and two of their band members were shot dead. The assassination remains unsolved.
The Chamkila story has been told twice before, as a mockumentary “Mehsampur” (2018), and as an unofficial biopic “Jodi” (2023), also starring Dosanjh, who...

“That’s how ‘Bida Karo’ came up in ‘Amar Singh Chamkila’. Magically, Irshad, who prefers going home early, wrote the song then and there. The whole experience was something else,...

Mumbai, April 2 (Ians) Auteur Imtiaz Ali is one of the rare filmmakers who strikes a perfect balance between philosophy and entertainment in his stories.
While his earlier works like ‘Socha Na Tha’ and ‘Jab We Met’ were more on the entertaining side, films like ‘Love Aaj Kal’ (2009), ‘Rockstar’ and ‘Tamasha’ have aged like a fine wine and have cultivated a new fan base which craves for deeper meaning to a story as much as the entertainment.
The filmmaker is now gearing up for his ninth film, the biopic based on the highest selling Punjabi musician of all times, ‘Amar Singh Chamkila’.
“There are a lot of ‘9’ happening,” Imtiaz told Ians as he seems in a quirky mood.
“Nine is my favourite number, A.R. Rahman (his music composer) also loves nine, he has made ’99 Songs’ and ‘Chamkila’ is my ninth film”.

Amar Singh Chamkila’s Jukebox Is An Asset To Be Treasured ( Photo Credit – Netflix India / YouTube )
Rating – 10 out of 5 stars! Some Albums outperform!
The release of Amar Singh Chamkila is still a few days away, but the jukebox of the film is out, and this is one film where Bollywood outperformed after a very long time. Recently, I was putting all my hopes for a good Bollywood music album from Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Heeramandi, totally forgetting about the Chamkila biopic. But finally, Ar Rahman, Imtiaz Ali, and Irshad Kamil’s magical trio arrived unannounced, taking my breath away. And this album is the only soul music you need right now.
If you talk about a brilliantly balanced album from a commercial film, you would struggle when you encountered it last. Last year, Animal had a good album, undoubtedly, but it never stayed with you. Similarly, Rocky Aur Rani Ki...

“The Teacher” opens with text informing the viewers that the film was “Inspired by True Events.” Most obviously, this refers to the case of Gilad Shalit, an Israel Defense Forces soldier whose imprisonment by Palestinian militants and 2011 release in exchange for over 1,000 Palestinian prisoners is lightly fictionalized during the movie. But more broadly, it speaks to the film’s commitment to portraying the struggles of living in Palestine in a time of perpetual strife, where violence and displacement is a constantly looming threat and justice feels constantly out of reach.
Although Shalit’s capture and release inspired the backbone of Farah Nabulsi’s debut feature, his counterpart in the film, Nathanial Cohen, is a mere plot device spoken about more than he’s glancingly seen. Our protagonist is instead completely fictional Basem, a Palestinian man who teaches English at a small boys school. At his job he’s stern but gentle,...

San Francisco, Aug 22 (Ians) Google has begun the groundwork for enabling Qr code-based eSIM transfers on Android.
Announced earlier this year, the tech giant is working to provide support for an eSIM transfer feature in Android that would allow users to migrate their eSIM between devices natively, reports 9To5Google.
It’s an essential feature because, as of right now, there isn’t a native way to transfer an eSIM between Android devices, leaving the process entirely up to the carriers.
The feature will prompt users to scan a Qr code to start the transfer process.
“Seeing as most of this functionality is not yet live, we were only able to access this beginning portion, with @AssembleDebug also having been able to uncover a Fast Pair-like Ui that appears before scanning the Qr code,” the report said.

It could enable features including “Call Switching”, which allows users to switch between connected devices during calls, and “Internet Sharing”, which could allow users to quickly set up a personal hotspot across the connected devices, as per Android Authority.

In MemoriamSiddique and his partner Lal were really good with situational humour and made their funniest scenes without stereotyping, at no one's expense.SiddiqueEven though Malayalam filmmaker Siddique, who passed away on August 8, is remembered along with his partner Lal for the films they wrote and directed, the two of them had begun by writing stories that others directed. They contributed to one of the most celebrated films in Malayalam, Manichitrathazhu. They were really good with situational humour and made their funniest scenes without the usual stereotyping, at anyone's expense. Later when they split ways, Siddique continued directing comedies and slipped a few into other languages too. A listicle of his films wouldn't be complete without the early films he and Lal wrote for, and without his later stints in Tamil and Hindi. Pappan Priyappetta Pappan This is the first film Siddique and Lal scripted but it was directed by Sathyan Anthikad.

NewsSiddique had directed many popular comedies in Malayalam cinema with his friend Lal, like 'Godfather', 'In Harihar Nagar', and 'Ramji Rao Speaking'.Writer and director of many comedies in Malayalam cinema, Siddique, passed away in Kochi on August 8, Tuesday. He suffered a cardiac arrest on Saturday at a hospital in Kochi, where he was admitted since July 10 due to respiratory issues. The 60-year-old filmmaker hailed from Kochi. Like many artistes of his generation, Siddique had begun his career at the mimicry troupe run by Kalabhavan, a prestigious arts centre in Kerala. With Lal, his friend and colleague at Kalabhavan, he forayed into Malayalam cinema in the latter half of the 80s, writing comedies of a new flavour with an element of melancholy in them. If comedies were mostly written as a parallel track in films until then, in Siddque and Lal’s works, they merged with the main storyline,...

San Francisco, Aug 8 (Ians) Popular instant messaging app Snapchat is now allowing users to enable dark mode without a Snapchat+ subscription, on Android.
On Tuesday, Android expert Mishaal Rahman shared the information on X.
“Users are reporting that they can now enable dark mode in Snapchat without a Snapchat+ subscription!,” he said.
“I thought it was dumb for Snapchat to lock dark mode behind a paywall, so I’m glad to see they’ve changed their minds!”
In a separate post, Rahman mentioned that the dark mode’s support page still mentions that only paid subscribers can access the mode on Android.
“Support page still says you need Snapchat+ to gain ‘early access to Dark Mode’ on Android, but that doesn’t seem to be true anymore,” he wrote.
Last week, Snap, the parent company of Snapchat, had introduced a ‘Lens Creator Rewards’ programme for Snap Ar creators in India.

ReviewIt is no mean task, playing a character well over a decade older than you, but Shanthi Krishna carries the role of the illustrious Dr Malathy with a deeply impressive conviction.Screengrab: YouTube / Bijibal OfficialIn debutant director Indu Lakshmi’s Nila, it is through sheer serendipity that the film’s protagonist Malathy (Shanthi Krishna) stumbles upon Nila, a young woman with a mellifluous voice and a distinct Kannur slang, who lives next door to her in a high-rise apartment. For the septuagenarian who has been confined to her bed due to an accident that broke her spine, Nila comes as a balm for her loneliness, someone she can talk to and share her day with. As she sings to her from the adjacent balcony, Malathy sighs with a smile while lying on her bed, immersing herself in her younger friend’s soothing voice and nodding along in contentment. It is a heartwarming friendship,...
