Louie Rankin, a Jamaican part-time actor who appeared in films including Belly and Shottas and had a dancehall with “Typewriter,” died Monday in a car crash in Eastern Canada, local police said. He was in his mid-50s.
Ontario Provincial Police said the car Rankin was driving collided with a transport truck near the town of Shelburne.
Born Leonard Ford, the Saint Thomas Parish native played Jamaican drug kingpin Lennox, aka Ox, in 1998’s Belly, opposite rapper-stars Nas and Dmx. He also was known as the Original Don Dada and as Teddy Bruckshut — after the character he played in 2002’s Shottas. He also co-starred in We Run These Streets (2014). On Monday, Rankin posted on Instagram that he was in Toronto to film a movie:

Witness Cess Silvera’s cult classic film Shottas as Encore Action is to broadcast Friday, September 17th. This means it will be shown commerical free and no cuts, edits or censorship. So no shouts that change in sound bass and pitch of, “Awww that mother-lover, I’m gonna kill that son of a Benbag.” Saw a few glimpses of it before turning and the transfer quality looks stunning and the clarity is remarkable.
Constant comparisons have been made to the film Belly which also was shot and takes place quite a bit in Jamaica and features mostly musicians in the main roles. This film, Shottas, developed a large scale history before it was even released. Bootlegs were being sent out in 2002 while Silvera was still editing and an early cut was being passed around the streets of New York. There are many elements similar to Belly aside from the actor...

Today's installment of Scenes (Songs) We Love is going to give us two for the price of one, because in the opening scene of Hype William's crime fable Belly, you not only get a slick credit sequence (and a possible contender for Credits Report), but a perfect example of how the right song and visual combination can instantly draw you in. I love a movie opening that sets the tone for what's to come, and the opening heist set to an a cappella version of Soul II Soul's "Back to Life" gets you ready for one of the slickest crime flicks in film history .
Belly was written by Williams along with his star, the rapper Nas, and the rest of the cast included other musical big names like T-Boz from Tlc, Dmx, Method Man and Vita, and the dancehall artist, Louie Rankin. The story revolved around a pair of childhood friends,...
