Exclusive: The BBC is actively weighing whether it should replace Huw Edwards as the anchor of its flagship election night show amid continued uncertainty over the presenter’s future.
Edwards has been suspended since July as the BBC investigates his conduct following allegations in The Sun newspaper that he paid a young person for sexually explicit images.
Deadline understands that the BBC is in the early stages of planning for a significant UK general election, which could usher in a new government after 13 years of Conservative rule.
The election is expected to take place next year, though Prime Minister Rishi Sunak could call an early vote, meaning senior BBC executives are giving thought to who should anchor its output.
Edwards, who earns up to £440,000, presented 2019’s election night coverage and signed a new deal with the BBC earlier this year which would have guaranteed his place as master of ceremony...

The BBC has reportedly issued letters gauging interest for voluntary redundancy to its top presenting stars, sending shockwaves through the corporation.
The move is thought to be part of a cost-saving mission by the corporation, which includes reducing spending in its news division.
On Saturday night (15 April), the Mail reported that the BBC’s interim managing editor of news and current affairs, Philippa Busby, has written to all its senior TV and radio presenters asking them to consider voluntary redundancy.
The publication reported that Huw Edwards, Clive Myrie and Sophie Raworth were among those to receive letters. The Independent has contacted their representatives for comment.
On Twitter, Edwards said the move was a “standard invitation to consider applying for voluntary redundancy” and “nothing more”.
Alongside a picture of him and his mother drinking champagne, he wrote: “Reality check. A standard Hr exercise by @BBCNews (one of many over the years) is just that.

The Last of Us co-creator Craig Mazin has hinted that the hit HBO series won’t end at season two.
During a panel about the apocalyptic drama on Sunday (16 April) at Nab in Las Vegas, Mazin said there’s “quite a bit of story to tell”.
“Our plan is to do it not just for one more season,” he said of the show starring Pedro Pascal. “We should be around for a while.”
The update comes after Bella Ramsey, who plays Ellie, gave her thoughts on when season two is likely to arrive.
Speaking on The Jonathan Ross Show last month, Ramsey said, “It will be a while. I think we’ll probably shoot at the end of this year, beginning of next.”
“So it’ll probably be the end of 2024, early 2025.”

The Queen is to mark the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe (V.E.) Day next week with a televised address in the U.K.
The monarch’s pre-recorded address will be broadcast on the BBC on May 8 at 9 p.m. BST in what will be her second televised message during the coronavirus outbreak.
The Queen’s rare address last month was seen by 24 million viewers, and ended with the words “we will meet again” — a reference to Dame Vera Lynn’s bolstering war anthem “We’ll Meet Again.”
The speech on May 8 will form part of a program of commemorations to mark the end of the Second World War after the original outdoor plans — such as street parties and parades — were canceled because of the coronavirus outbreak. Celebrations will instead take place in gardens, on doorsteps and in living rooms.
The BBC will broadcast special programs to mark the milestone occasion.

The guilty party was sitting mere yards behind “News at Ten” anchor Sophie Raworth, who was oblivious to the evening’s extra-interesting backdrop. Jeremy Vine has reached the age where he needs to try new things, which is why he signed up for Strictly Come Dancing.
The Eggheads presenter was the first celebrity contestant to be announced for the show earlier this year.
"I turned 50 this year and although I'm not a natural dancer, I realised this is the time to do stuff you don't naturally want to do," he said.
"I remember I was at a wedding and there were about a hundred couples and we were all dancing in a rubbish way and then suddenly this pair of 30-somethings came on the dancefloor and did an amazing Rumba or Salsa and I thought I want to be able to do that."
Of course, it's not the first time he's danced on telly before, he once famously donned the suspenders for Children in Need.

Sandi Toksvig has claimed that she was rejected as the original host of Have I Got News For You because she was a woman.
The presenter and comedian revealed in an interview with Radio Times that she was overlooked for the position in favour of Angus Deayton in 1990 because the BBC decided it "couldn't have a woman in charge".
Speaking about auditioning for the show, Toksvig said: "They made two pilots, one with me and one with Angus Deayton.
"I was told by the producers that they preferred my version, but the channel decided they couldn't have a woman in charge."
Toksvig also revealed how the decision "made [her] feel inadequate and question whether [she] was really up to it".
She went on to speak about the tabloid scandal involving Deayton in 2002, saying: "I thought Angus was very good and he's an extremely nice chap... but I would not have been caught with either prostitutes or cocaine,...

How about this for one of those blooper TV Shows. The BBC has somehow managed to confuse the fictitious United Nations Space Command logo found in Halo for the actual Un logo. While presenter Sophie Raworth was reporting on the ongoing conflict in Syria, the Unsc logo can clearly be seen in the background as the unfortunate host went on to talk about the Un. The scary part of this whole mess is that the logos don’t even look the same! You can see them both below.
Although the BBC has taken the clip down from iplayer, a clip has surfaced on-line which we have for you right here. It could of course just be a great big hoax, but it’s funny non the less.
