The actors from the current revival of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s “Merrily We Roll Along” have skyrocketed in Gold Derby’s combined odds for the 2024 Tony Awards nominations. The prediction center displays commanding leads for Jonathan Groff, Lindsay Mendez and Daniel Radcliffe to win their respective categories. This is an understandable result considering this revival is the hottest ticket in town and this trio of performers has been ever-present in the media. But how often does a trio of actors from the same production pull off three separate acting victories at the Tony Awards?
It’s quite common for a musical to grab two acting trophies, but three awards is much rarer. To date, only 15 musical productions have earned three acting wins. The first time this feat occurred was at the 1956 ceremony, which was ironically the first time the Tony Awards ever announced a slate of nominees (previously...

Garner starred as double CIA agent Sydney Bristow on the hit show Alias. The series was created by Star Trek director J.J. Abrams, who knew Garner would be perfect for the role. Others didn’t share his opinion, however, feeling that Garner didn’t have the right physical stats to play Bristow. Abrams believed she proved them wrong immediately.

Newly remastered in 4K! Bruce Dern’s (literally) tree-hugging forest ranger Freeman Lowell commits space piracy to save the trees, dude, and becomes lost in space with only Huey, Dewey and Louie for companionship. The only soul back on Earth who seems to care is Joan Baez. Douglas Trumbull’s technically-accomplished first feature film does 2001 on a tiny budget, and creates something original, if a bit mushy — the bittersweet ending depresses more than it uplifts.

David goes to live with his grandfather in an observant Jewish community and finds he is not the only one keeping secrets
This is the fiction feature debut from film-maker Eric Steel, previously responsible for the controversial documentary The Bridge, about people who kill themselves by jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge. Minyan is a subdued, withdrawn emotional drama set in the 1980s among the Russian Jewish immigrant community of New York’s “Little Odessa”. David (Samuel H Levine) is a young Jewish gay man who reads a lot of James Baldwin; he is at odds with his overbearing parents and much closer to his recently widowed grandfather Josef (Ron Rifkin) who has now got a modest but comfortable apartment in a much sought-after subsidised residency building for observant Jews. David comes to live there, too, both agreeing to make up the numbers required (the “minyan”) for public worship.

Although primarily known as a documentary filmmaker, director Eric Steel makes his narrative feature debut with Minyan, a faithful yet surprising adaptation of a coming-of-age short story by David Bezmozgis. Set in the Russian Jewish community of Brighton Beach, Brooklyn in the 1980s, Minyan tells the story of David (Samuel H. Levine) who, while helping his grandfather (Ron Rifkin) transition into a retirement home, befriends two closeted gay men. As David begins to identify and expand on his own desires, his sense of self begins […]

The year is 1986, the setting is New York City, and the AIDS epidemic is running rampant. Our hero David (Samuel H. Levine) is a teenager living in Brighton Beach, going to school while doing his damndest to get his grandfather (the great Ron Rifkin) into a retirement home nearby. The young man has a temper that stems from a budding rebellious streak, the long-gestating product of his strict Russian Jewish upbringing.
Directed by Eric Steel, who co-wrote the script with Daniel Pearle, Minyan is a deeply personal piece of work. Adapted from David Bezmozgis’s short story of the same name, it’s clear Steel is pulling from his own experience in bringing the written word to the big screen. Levine is sufficiently awkward as the lead, manifesting many of David’s growing pains quite literally on camera. This is an unsure soul, whether it be regarding his sexuality, his religion,...

"He isn't a stranger to himself anymore, he can see inside himself." Strand Releasing has unveiled a new US trailer for an indie drama titled Minyan, which originally premiered at last year's Berlin Film Festival. It also played at Outfest last year, and stopped by the New York Jewish Film Festival earlier this year. The film stars Samuel H. Levine as a young Russian Jewish immigrant caught between thrilling private trysts and his repressive family. Set in 1980s Brooklyn, he develops a close friendship with his grandfather's neighbors, two elderly closeted gay men who open his imagination to the possibilities of love and the realities of loss–and explores the East Village where he finds a world teeming with the energy of youth, desire, and risk. The cast includes Ron Rifkin, Christopher McCann, Chris Perfetti, Elizabeth Loyacano, and Zuzanna Szadkowski. Looks like a distinct coming-of-age film with intense passion carefully worked into the story.

“Conservation In Space”
By Raymond Benson
When Silent Running was released in 1972 as a somewhat “experimental” venture from Universal Pictures, a studio that had decided to give a handful of new filmmakers a million dollars each to make whatever they wanted, it flew under the radar of most folks who weren’t into science fiction. After all, it was a tough challenge to come up with anything to compete with 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), which was still playing on second and third runs around the world. Silent Running did okay at the box office, but it wasn’t a runaway hit.
Nevertheless, Running, which was directed by one of 2001’s visual effects supervisors, Douglas Trumbull (it was his debut as a director), became a cult movie that has played revival houses and did good business on home video years later in multiple formats.

The 32nd annual NewFest, New York’s LGBTQ Film Festival is bringing queer cinema to audience’s homes this year in response to the coronavirus pandemic. The diverse offerings at this year’s virtual festival should delight LGBTQ cinephiles of many tastes. The queer film fest will offer screenings through October 27, and the following five movies are some of the best on display.
“Ammonite”
NewFest 2020 is not completely devoid of in-person events, thanks to a select few drive-in screenings. The first of which was “Ammonite,” the highest profile awards contender of the lineup. The film by Francis Lee depicts the real life relationship between paleontologist Mary Anning (Kate Winslet) and a young woman (Saorise Ronan) in the 1840s. Those in attendance at the Queen’s Drive-In were lucky enough not only to experience the sweeping period romance, but also witnessed Winslet virtually present the inaugural World Queer Visionary Award to director Francis Lee.

While independent filmmakers have taken a hit with all the festival postponements, cancelations, and re-imaginings, there is a silver lining to upending business as usual. In the past, LGBTQ cinephiles hungry for quality films that represent the breadth and depth of queer life would have to go to a queer film festival to see the international titles or small comedies that may never make their way to Netflix. This year, they can stream some of the freshest films from all across the globe at home.

Best known for the unexpectedly soul-shattering San Francisco suicide doc “The Bridge,” indie filmmaker Eric Steel came out and came of age in 1980s New York at a moment just before AIDS devastated the city’s gay community. Such timing must have been surreal, to assume something so liberating about one’s own identity, only to watch in fear and uncertainty as this fraternity of newfound freedom collapsed around him. One can feel the traces of that experience — nostalgia for old-school, in-person sexual discovery, tinged with survivor’s guilt — lurking in Steel’s narrative debut, “Minyan,” a movie about an outsider among outsiders: a closeted kid adrift in Brighton Beach’s Russian Jewish community circa 1986.
Steel took a long time to make his narrative debut, and he comes to the project in the wake of other adolescent tales depicting the same era and milieu, such as Dito Montiel’s relatively...

When grandpa needs a place to live and his congregation needs a tenth man, what’s a good Jewish boy to do? For a mensch like David (Samuel H. Levine), the answer is clear. That’s a rarity in David’s religious Jewish faith — where answers are as hard to come by as Christmas hams. Like the meandering stories his grandfather tells on the walk to shul, Judaism is a faith that meets questions with more questions. In “Minyan,”
The film opens and closes with two deaths, which both set events in motion that bring David closer to knowing himself. The first shot is an elegantly composed family portrait scored to the even drone of the Mourner’s Kaddish, the Jewish call to grief, recited with perfunctory solemnity. After his grandmother’s death, David’s grandfather Josef (a note-perfect Ron Rifkin) must downsize apartments for financial reasons. When a highly...

Warren Adler, author, playwright and poet, whose novels The War of the Roses and Random Hearts were adapted into feature films, has died. Adler died Monday of complications from liver cancer, the Los Angeles Times reports. He was 91.
His 1981 novel The War of The Roses was turned into the 1989 dark comedy feature starring Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner and Danny DeVito. In both the novel and the film, the married couple’s family name is Rose, and the title is an allusion to the battles between the Houses of York and Lancaster (English Civil War) during the Late Middle Ages.
His novel Random Hearts also was adapted into a film starring Harrison Ford and Kristin Scott Thomas in 1999. His published manuscript Private Lies sparked an unprecedented bidding war between TriStar Pictures, Warner Bros. and Columbia. Thirteen years after the end of Alias, Sydney Bristow hasn't forgotten about her spy daddy...or her evil spy boss. Jennifer Garner posted a sweet reunion pic with Victor Garber and Ron Rifkin on Instagram, writing "A mini reunion in New York City—former castmates, favorite dinner dates, forever playmates." Garner credits Garber's husband Rainer Andreesen for the photo. Garber played Jack Bristow, dad to Garner's Sydney, and Rifkin played Arvin Sloane, the guy responsible for recruiting Sydney into the world of the fake CIA, who was last seen trapped in a tomb for all of eternity by Jack. But it seems like they're getting along well now! Alias aired on ABC...

Last fall’s audience-pleaser is indeed a pleasant surprise, not because it’s a classic but because it isn’t plain awful. An unnecessary third remake of a Depression-era Cinderella story has been concocted to showcase the special talents of Lady Gaga, who indeed comes off as the most personable and deserving star-to-be-born since Judy Garland. Bradley Cooper stunned the industry by wearing almost all the creative hats on this thing — and producing an entertainment that will enhance the careers of all involved.

If Bradley Cooper makes it to the podium at Sunday’s 2019 Golden Globes, he might want to thank Jennifer Garner.
After all, the actress — who costarred with Cooper on the ABC spy series Alias in the 2000s — “taught him everything he knows,” or so she joked via Instagram on Saturday while sharing a throwback photo.
Laughing and heart emojis followed Garner’s message, which came attached to birthday wishes for Cooper, who turned 44 on Saturday.
She then said she was pulling for Cooper at the Globes, where he is nominated for both best director and best actor in a drama for A Star Is Born.

Aooowww — Woo! Jack Nicholson summons his inner dog — and dons the makeup and scary contact lenses — to go the Larry Talbot route. Unfortunately, his moon-howling nighttime life isn’t as interesting as the dog-eat-dog infighting in the publishing house where he works – where feral instincts and sharp lupine senses are a major aid to ‘getting a leg up’ on the competition. I know, cheap metaphors are the ruin of promising writers.

It was announced on Twitter yesterday that Sir Roger Moore, the third actor to play James Bond for Eon Productions, has passed away in Switzerland after losing a battle with cancer. According to his family, there will be a private memorial held in Monaco.

Sir Roger Moore was the first James Bond I was exposed to. While I was aware of Sean Connery's work as Bond, being that there were more Roger Moore Bond films out when I was a kid meant that most replays of Bond movies on television were of Roger Moore's version of the character. At the time, I wasn't much of a fan because the films felt silly. I didn't realize until growing up that that was the mood that Roger Moore was trying to create with those films. Here is a quote from Mr. Moore explaining his thoughts on James Bond.

True Memoirs Of An International Assassin is cleverer than the average Kevin James comedy, though its better gags are unlikely to inspire more than a snicker. As always, James, the sitcom star who made the jump to movies under the aegis of Adam Sandler, plays a sad sack with dreams above his station. His character, Sam Larson, is a mid-level office drone who escapes the drudgery of his day-to-day existence by writing pulpy spy novels, plotted with the help of his pool-hall buddy Amos (Ron Rifkin), a retiree who claims to have once worked a desk job at Mossad. Rejected by literary agents, Sam’s latest manuscript is picked up by a low-rent e-publisher, who retitles the book True Memoirs Of An International Assassin and markets it as nonfiction. Soon, Sam finds himself kidnapped by El Toro (Andy Garcia), a revolutionary who wants him to assassinate the president of Venezuela...

“True Memoirs of an International Assassin” opens with an unusual degree of promise for a feature-length Netflix comedy, as trained killer Sam Larson (Kevin James!) infiltrates a dockside shipping yard in broad daylight and goes full “Metal Gear Solid” on a group of henchmen. And you know what? The Artist Formerly Known as The King of Queens pulls it off. Nobody is going to mistake James for Tony Jaa, but he clearly put some practice into becoming a remotely believable ass-kicker, and the violence is shot in such a distant and sterile way that the comedian’s movements look all the more striking. And then James gets shot in the chest with a rocket launcher and explodes in a plume of digital blood. The world, it turns out, is not ready for a relatively straight-faced action-comedy in which a heavyset white dude can play a lethal mercenary who struggles with his body image.

Last year, Gotham debuted on Fox amidst a lot of hoopla and generally positive notices. I, however, found the series woefully inept with ham-fisted dialogue and implausible plotting, while ignoring the source material to the point of being unrecognizable. I apparently was in the minority since the ratings were strong and it got a renewal.
Gotham: The Complete Second Season is out now on Blu-ray courtesy of Warner Home Entertainment and while it is markedly improved, it apparently has decided to embrace bad writing and worse plotting since people seemed to like it.
With the core players established, the second season decided to offer up two long arcs, with the winter hiatus separating them. In the first arc, we have the arrival of Theo Galavan (James Frain) and his sister Tabitha (Jessica Lucas), arrive in Gotham and we learn he’s here to settle old family scores as we...

We’ve got questions, and you’ve (maybe) got answers! With another week of TV gone by, we’re lobbing queries left and right about shows including Marvel’s Jessica Jones, Doctor Who, The Good Wife and Chicago Fire!
1 | Has Jessica Jones given young women the easiest (and a modest!) superhero costume to pull off? (That said, doesn’t it kind of look like Shiri Appleby’s UnREAL wardrobe?) And after so many start-and-stops, has Rachael Taylor (Charlie’s Angels, 666 Park, Crisis…) finally found herself a winner?

This week on Fox’s Gotham, as Firefly began to flicker, light was also shed on the dark (and ancient) origin of Theo Galavan’s agenda.
Related2016 Renewal Scorecard: What’s Coming Back? What’s Getting Cancelled? What’s on the Bubble?
Theo Galavan this week was hot to make more mayhem, tasking his “tool,” Penguin, with burning to the ground several specific buildings. Penguin in turn offered the arson gig to the Pike brothers, who took it after Selina vouched for her “friend” (an extra $100, please!) Butch.
The Pikes however found themselves down a man when Captain Barnes’ Strike Force raided an illegal armory.

Coming from someone who has only seen the big screen version of Limitless in random pieces on basic cable, CBS’s new-crime-procedural-with-a-different-wallpaper is shockingly deft in doing what it sets out to accomplish. There’s a surprising amount of sweetness thanks to a core relationship between loner Brian and his sickly father, and the show as a whole works overtime in catching up anyone who may never have heard of the Bradley Cooper-starring film. All the same, it will hardly change the opinions of those who visibly revolt against those acronym-heavy procedurals that CBS trots out each year, but given the opportunity, there’s decent a chance you’ll get lost in this world along with Brian.
