Studied journalism at the University of Minnesota and briefly worked as a reporter. Began in Hollywood as a studio electrician, before later working as a publicist for RKO. Worked under contract as a screenwriter for 20th Century Fox from 1935 to 1939, and at MGM from 1949 to 1953. Co-founder of the Screenwriter's Guild.
