David Fincher is sometimes accused of a smug misanthropy, as his obsessive fascination with procedure, behavior, and psychology can suggest an unfeeling smirk or a weary shake of the head at the human condition. Though The Killer does touch on some weighty themes related to death and fate, particularly in a lyrical scene where Michael Fassbender’s character has a showdown with a glamorous, nihilistic fellow assassin (Tilda Swinton), the film’s relatively slight, linear narrative seems to have permitted the director to cease his investigations for a little while. His calculating approach is instead applied in service of a straightforwardly entertaining film, and while it might not offer much in the way of originality or depth, it’s undeniably effective and refreshingly unafraid to embrace its own shallowness. In conjunction with the film’s release, we ranked all of Fincher’s features to date. David Robb

After the Southern Gothic thriller elements of 2017’s The Beguiled and the broad rom-com antics of 2020’s On the Rocks, which saw Sofia Coppola departing slightly from the aesthetic territory that she’d staked so forcefully in her earlier work, Priscilla finds the filmmaker firmly back in her wheelhouse. Based on Priscilla Presley’s 1985 biography Elvis and Me, Coppola’s latest is another impossibly photogenic tale of fame, solitude, material wealth, and female desire in a world that often contrives to deny its existence. In conjunction with the film’s release, we ranked all of Coppola’s features to date. David Robb

SAG-AFTRA’s scheduled talks with the video game industry, which began Tuesday, have ended with no agreement.
In a terse joint statement tonight, the union and the vidgame producers said: “SAG-AFTRA and video game employers concluded scheduled negotiations for the Interactive Media Agreement. No deal was reached and the current agreement will remain in effect while the parties make final efforts to reach a deal.”
The news comes days after SAG-AFTRA’s 160,000-strong membership voted overwhelmingly to authorize a strike against 10 of the major video game companies; the vote was 98.32% in favor.
Many of the issues involved in the union’s 11-week film and TV strike are common to those in the video game contract, including wages and artificial intelligence.
The 10 companies facing a possible strike are:
Activision Productions Inc.,
Blindlight LLC,
Disney Character Voices Inc.,
Electronic Arts Productions Inc.,
Epic Games, Inc.,
Formosa Interactive LLC,
Insomniac Games Inc.,
Take 2 Productions Inc.

Updated with day and venue confirmed: As Deadline first told you Tuesday, SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP are meeting next week. The actors guild and the studio reps released a joint statement Wednesday evening saying that both sides are coming back to the table on Monday, October 2.
“SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP will resume negotiations for a new TV/Theatrical contract on Monday, Oct. 2. Several executives from AMPTP member companies will be in attendance,” read the statement.
Today’s acknowledgment by the 160,000-strong actors union comes after the union had said that there no “confirmed” dates set for them to sit down with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television producers in response to Deadline’s exclusive.
As of 12:01 a.m. today, the writers strike came to an end after 148 days, just a few days short of the 1988 strike, the WGA’s longest ever at 153 days.

Updated, 4:36 Pm: Today’s meeting between the WGA and the AMPTP is over.
The sit-down at the Sherman Oaks office of the Carol Lombardini-led organization concluded with “mixed results,” according to a well-placed source.
No details have yet to emerge as to whether the parties will meet for further talks or if more proposals will be offered.
Exclusive, Previous 1:34 Pm: Sources are telling Deadline that the Writers Guild and AMPTP are resuming talks this afternoon. We’re told now that the meeting is in person. We understand that the WGA will be delivering their counter to AMPTP’s counterproposal from Friday.
We heard that the WGA negotiating committee met Monday to parse through the studios’ offer. Sources tell us that by the end of today, we’re bound to have further clarity on talks, the vital points being about viewership-based streaming residuals, pay raises, AI and the preservation of the writers room.

Exclusive: With the clock ticking and writers out on the picket lines all over town, the Directors Guild of America and the studios are far from even the framework of a deal.
Two weeks into their negotiations, the Lesli Linka Glatter-led union and the Alliance of Motion Picture Producers and Television Producers haven’t “agreed on anything significant,” well-positioned sources say. Not entirely surprising at this juncture in the media-blacked-out talks, the reality of the situation extinguishes the rumor flying around town today that an agreement is close.

Another TV shoot has been disrupted by striking writers, Michelle and Robert King’s supernatural drama for Paramount+ Evil, which has been filming its fourth season at Brooklyn Stages in Brooklyn.
“Evil has met its match,” veteran showrunner (and strike captain) Warren Leight wrote on Twitter at 1 Am Et Sunday alongside a video of three picketers walking in a small circle (you can watch it below). “Studio waited hoping they’d leave, because they didn’t want the headline that 3 guys walking for six hours shut the show down. But that’s what happened.”
Deadline has confirmed that no filming on Evil occurred Friday.
Writer Starlee Kane posted a photo of the trio with the caption “We Won,” reporting that the picketers “kept the crew there for hours, sitting on the sidewalk.” “We felt the solidarity. We’ll win this whole thing together,” Kane added.
A source at the guild confirmed the account.

Exclusive: While the Writers Guild of America will continue to negotiate with the studios right up to the expiration of their current contact on May 1, strike preparations are underway — but Hollywood might not see picket lines as quickly as you think.
In fact, the WGA will likely not have its first picket lines out on the streets “until Tuesday afternoon,” sources tell me. Add to that, the guild leadership are planning a big meeting on May 3 at the over 6,000 capacity Shrine Auditorium to explain to members why they do or do not have an agreement with the AMPTP.
With the tense atmosphere gripping the town right now, the explaintion of the later than expected WGA picket start time is actually more bureaucratic than dramatic.

“Rye Lane” may not have been the buzziest title at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, but it was among the event’s most broadly acclaimed. Commercial and music video director Raine Allen-Miller’s feature debut is about a chance meeting between heartbroken twentysomethings in Peckham. The multicultural, working-class British neighborhood is as integral to the romantic comedy as lead characters Dom (David Jonsson) and Yas (Vivian Oparah). Their stark contrast—he’s a timid accountant; she’s a livewire who works in fashion—makes them a classic odd-couple pairing. Across one serendipitous day, the two rediscover their zeal for love, life, and South London.
Critics are equally taken by “Rye Lane’s” performances and its vivid, textured filmmaking. Esther Zuckerman (IndieWire) writes, “Audiences will long for Allen-Miller’s heroes to get together, but will likely also crave the burritos they eat and itch to grab some pints and crisps with them.

It may be this year’s ‘comfort food’ film but Julian Fellowes’ second theatrical sequel to his revered long-running TV show is quality goods — and may be better than the first one. Almost every actor is back, seemingly pleased as plum puddings to repeat their roles as either landed nobility or downstairs staff. The storyline ties a final bow on some characters and plot lines, and in a far more pleasing way than we thought possible. Even casual fans of the franchise ought to be charmed.

Nicholas Meyer’s ‘other’ fantastic film project was ignored for all the wrong reasons; Pierce Brosnan fills a heroic leading role in a revisit of The Stranglers of Bombay, but filmed on location with great attention to authentic details. An officer of the East India Company detects an incredibly murderous cult of Kali-worshipping Thugs, a criminal underclass of thieves that practice ritual mass murder. The story has roots in history, snarled in colonial injustice and xenophobia. It’s a period picture unafraid to be controversial. Also starring Saeed Jaffrey and Helena Mitchell.

For Your Eyes Only, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this week, was a transitional James Bond film. Released in 1981, this 12th entry in the long-running series, and Roger Moore’s fifth outing as the man in the tuxedo, was deliberately styled as a return to the 007’s roots after he went to space in the over-the-top Moonraker (1979): the one where series producers did their best to compete with Star Wars. By contrast Eyes seemed stripped down and also marked the debut of John Glen in the director’s chair—a position he would hold for a series-most five entries. He received that promotion after working on several previous installments as a second unit director.
But Eyes was also meant, at one point, to usher in the most important change in any Bond movie: the introduction of a new actor in the role of 007.
Roger Moore’s original contract was for three films,...

Updated with ITV Entertainment statement: WGA has issued a strike notice against ABC’s quiz show The Chase, from ITV America.
“Per Working Rule 8, no Writers Guild member shall accept employment on The Chase, effective immediately,” the guild wrote in a letter to members. “ITV America has refused to apply the full terms of the Minimum Basic Agreement (Mba) to all seasons of The Chase going forward – and writers on The Chase, and the Guild at large, refuse to accept an agreement that would undermine writers of future seasons.”
ABC’s The Chase, a remake of British game show, features the stars of Jeopardy! The Greatest of All Time, James Holzhauer, Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter. Hosted by Sara Haines, it recently aired its initial order of nine episodes. It has not been renewed for a second season though there may be additional produced episodes from Season 1.

Exclusive: A crew member working on CBS’ The Bold and the Beautiful tested positive for Covid-19 on Wednesday, Deadline has learned.
The positive result triggered procedures set by state/county and industry protocols including contact tracing, and everyone who had interacted with the infected individual was asked to self-isolate.
The daytime drama, produced by Bell-Phillip Television, has a scheduled two-week Thanksgiving production hiatus starting Monday. I hear the show combined the scenes scheduled to tape today and Friday into one day; they are being shot today with the remaining crew before The Bold and the Beautiful goes on a break tomorrow.
A number of shows have been able to remain in production after positive Covid tests, most recently The Kelly Clarkson Show and the upcoming American Music Awards. Amid a resurgent infection rate nationwide, most series record positives as part of rigorous testing procedures.
The Bold and the Beautiful in June became the first U.

Saying that the entertainment industry is — and long has been — “operating in violation of the Age Discrimination in Employment Act,” Catherine Clinch, chair of the WGA West’s Career Longevity Committee, has penned a scathing open letter to the industry on behalf of her committee demanding “inclusion and equity” for older writers.

On Thursday, Deadline reported on the bombshell news that U.K. production on The Batman had shut down after star Robert Pattinson contracted coronavirus.
As production continues to ramp up, Deadline asked Los Angeles County Chief Medical Officer Dr. Jeffrey Gunzenhauser on Thursday about the virus and its impact on film and TV production here.
While Gunzenhauser couldn’t put a number on how many cases had been reported on set in L.A., he did say that “there certainly have been cases.” He tempered that with the assurance that, “We haven’t had a major outbreak.”

Donald Trump’s campaign and the Republican National Committee are under fire for the use of another piece of music: Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.”
The singer-songwriter’s estate and Sony/Atv Publishing say that they specifically declined the Republican National Committee’s request for the song, but it was played anyway during the final night of the convention, as Trump delivered his acceptance speech from the South Lawn of the White House.
Michelle Rice, legal representative for Cohen’s estate, said in a statement that they were “surprised and dismayed” that the Rnc would use the song knowing they “had specifically declined the Rnc’s use request, and their rather brazen attempt to politicize and exploit in such an egregious manner ‘Hallelujah,’ one of the most important songs in the Cohen song catalogue.”
She said that they are exploring legal options but also got in a dig at the campaign.

Exclusive: Six years after Sarah Jones was killed on the Georgia set of Midnight Rider, director Randall Miller is facing being arrested again.
Law enforcement authorities in the Peach State today requested that Department of Community Supervision issue a warrant for Miller for violating the conditions of his probation, we have learned. Law enforcement authorities in the Peach State today requested that Department of Community Supervision issue a warrant for Miller for violating the conditions of his probation, we have learned. The effort arises from Deadline’s exclusive earlier this week that Miller had directed the DGA sanctioned film Higher Grounds last summer in Serbia, Colombia and the UK.

Refresh for updates … Election Day has finally arrived, and Hollywood is holding its collective breath to see if the momentum around some of its preferred candidates is borne out at the polls.
With control of Congress and many state governors’ mansions up for grabs, several individual races have drawn attention, especially in consequential states like Georgia, Texas and Florida. A lot of dollars have flowed into Beto O’Rourke’s challenge to incumbent Republican Sen. Ted Cruz in Texas. With interest in the Georgia closely contested governor’s race running high, Oprah Winfrey has been among those knocking on doors trying to make the case for Democrat Stacey Abrams.
One significant factor showing up in a lot of social media posts today is the weather. It may be another sunny day in California but the eastern half of the U.S. is facing storms, high wind and even a bit of snow.

Section 181, the Federal tax incentive spurring the production of film and television in the United States is about to suffer, reports David Robb at Deadline, “a quiet death” — at least for the time being. Filmmaker has covered Section 181 extensively, with Daniel J. Coplan’s article from last summer explaining in detail how the incentive benefits independent film producers and investors. In brief, it allows investors to deduct 100% of their investment against their Federal taxes in the year of the investment. That’s opposed to depreciating that investment over multiple years. For a high net work individual, that could […]...

Sacrifice is a strange film. Director Peter A. Dowling treats his audience as if they’d already read author Sharon Bolton’s source novelization, and know exactly what’s going to happen. As soon as Sacrifice rockets straight through a rapid-fire credits sequence filled with foreshadowing images, we know the Exact movie we’re getting. Nothing is hidden and tension is sparse.
It’s almost as if Dowling has his thumb on the fast-forward button, speeding his film towards an inevitable ending that’s projected more times than we can count. No mystery, no suspense, and certainly no thrills – just wooden, cult generalizations and wasted potential.
Radha Mitchell stars as Dr. Tora Hamilton, a wife who cannot give birth due to recent health complications. Distraught and discouraged, Tora travels to her husband Duncan’s (Rupert Graves) homeland – the Shetland Islands – where they apply to adopt a local child. Since there...

In naming Spotlight one of the best ensembles of 2016, we said, “Tom McCarthy’s procedural moves with the precision of a fine timepiece. Rarely does one find a film where all is tune, from the pacing, writing, direction and acting. Highlighting the heroic work of the Boston Globe’s Spotlight team, the group is headed by Robby Robinson (Michael Keaton) who risks life long friendships to get the story right. His team includes Mike Rezendes (played by a compulsive Mark Ruffalo), Sacha Pfeiffer (Rachel McAdams) and Matt Caroll (Brian d’Arcy James). Encouraged by a Boston outsider, editor Marty Baron (Live Schreiber), the team undertakes a long-term investigation of abuses in the Catholic Church. In the mix are the lawyers on both sides, played by Stanley Tucci and Billy Crudup. Rightfully overshadowing that other journalism docudrama, James Vanderbilt’s incompetent Truth, the difference here amongst many things is perhaps access:...

A morning full of eye-opening surprises, the nominations for the 22nd Screen Actors Guild nominations were announced.
The standout nods were the inclusion of Straight Outta Compton, Beasts Of No Nation, Sarah Silverman, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Idris Elba and two for Dame Helen Mirren.
Not among the perceived hopefuls called were Sylvester Stallone, Charlotte Rampling, Michael Keaton, Mark Ruffalo, The Martian and The Hateful Eight.
Two nominating panels – one for television and one for film – each composed of 2,200 randomly selected union members from across the United States, chose this year’s nominees.
Some of the Sags choices were head-scratchers to be sure, but we’re thinking that the Oscar picks may be very different when The Academy announces their nominations next month live on Thursday, January 14, 2016, at 5:30 a.m. Pt at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.

Idris Elba and Helen Mirren lead actor nominations with three nods each.Scroll down for full list of film and TV nominations
Hollywood blacklist drama Trumbo has led the nominations for the 22nd Screen Actors Guild Awards with three nods for lead actor Bryan Cranston, supporting actress Helen Mirren and the ensemble cast. The Martian and The Hateful Eight were shut out.
Set in 1947, the film centres on Dalton Trumbo (Cranston), who was Hollywood’s top screenwriter, until he and other artists were jailed and blacklisted for their political beliefs.
Cranston will go up against Johnny Depp for Black Mass, Leonardo DiCaprio for The Revenant, Michael Fassbender for Steve Jobs and Eddie Redmayne for The Danish Girl.
Films that secured two nominations included Beasts Of No Nation, The Big Short, Carol, The Danish Girl, Room, Spotlight - whose outstanding cast nod will only strengthen its status as best picture Oscar frontrunner — and Steve Jobs.

The 22nd annual SAG Awards nominations were announced this morning and it's full of surprises! Sylvester Stallone, loved by critics and the National Board of Review for his performance in "Creed," was ignored. So was Kristen Stewart's supporting performance in "Clouds of Sils Maria." Matt Damon, who was so good and carried "The Martian" from start to finish, was also missing from the list.
But here's what I love about the SAG noms. First, Sarah Silverman's first dramatic performance in "I Smile Back" was embraced. And I'm also happy with the inclusion of "Room's" Brie Larson and the fantastic child actor, Jacob Tremblay. The endearing "Carol" also received noms for both Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, and Saoirse Ronan's performance in the beautiful "Brooklyn" also received a nomination.
The big winner of the SAG noms is Bleecker Street's "Trumbo." Missing from earlier critics awards (see here...

Nominees for the 22nd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were unveiled this morning in Hollywood, with a fair amount of surprises to be had. Leading the pack is Trumbo, which picked up three nominations, then a large batch of films behind it with two each: Beasts of No Nation, The Big Short, Carol, The Danish Girl, Room, Spotlight, and Steve Jobs.
Perhaps most surprising is no mention of The Hateful Eight, which has one of the year’s best ensembles. Also of questionable note is the inclusion of Helen Mirren for Woman in Gold, a film all but forgotten (we suppose Harvey Weinstein’s campaigning indeed worked). There’s also the welcome nods to Michael Shannon in 99 Homes and Sarah Silverman in I Smile Back, as well as an ensemble nod to Straight Outta Compton. Check out the full list of nominees below ahead of the ceremony on Saturday, Jan.

The sixth and final season of Downton Abbey premieres on PBS, Sunday, January 3, 2016, at 9:00pm Et/Pt. The Downton Abbey TV series finale airs on PBS on March 6, 2016. After that, what's left for loyal fans? Executive producer Gareth Neame tells TV Insider, “There is the possibility of a Downton Abbey film.” Neame adds, “We don’t have a script yet or any firm plans, but it is certainly something that we’ve been talking about.”
Fans have speculated about a prequel series, but that could necessitate a new cast. Would it really feel like Downton Abbey without at least some of the gifted cast members like Hugh Bonneville, Laura Carmichael, Jim Carter, Raquel Cassidy, Brendan Coyle, Michelle Dockery, Kevin Doyle, Michael Fox, Joanne Froggatt, Rob James-Collier, Phyllis Logan, Elizabeth McGovern, Sophie McShera, Lesley Nicol, David Robb, Maggie Smith, and Penelope Wilton?

In the Us we have to wait until Sunday, January 3rd, 2016 for it to air as part of the PBS Masterpiece! anthology series. Per Deadline, the UK season six premiere ratings were down, but Downton Abbey still won its premiere night. Since the season has been bought, paid for, and is already in the can, fans don't have to concern ourselves with ratings. Downton Abbey, while not "cancelled" is ending.

The surprise salvage of The Interview’s release started with emails amid the chaos of Sony’s hacking crisis, sent between Alamo Drafthouse impresario Tim League, Tim Massett of Florida’s Sun-Ray Cinema, and George R.R. The 21st Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards Nominations were revealed Wednesday morning, serving as yet another precursor on the long road to the Oscars.
In the film categories, Birdman was the big winner, scoring four nominations, including for Michael Keaton, Edward Norton and Emma Stone, as well as the collective ensemble cast. Boyhood followed right in its footsteps with three nods for Ethan Hawke, Patricia Arquette and another ensemble nomination.
The big surprises of the morning’s nominations started with Jake Gyllenhaal for Nightcrawler, a bubble contender in a crowded Best Actor race, Jennifer Aniston for Cake, a bubble contender in a disappointingly less crowded Best Actress race, Robert Duvall in the poorly reviewed The Judge and Naomi Watts for St. Vincent (Watts was in Birdman as well, but that must’ve slipped SAG’s minds).

As some of you may know, I'm a bit of a jack(ass) of all trades. I follow the film industry for Lr, and critique films. But I'm also an actor, I front a rock band, I'm a DJ, film editor, and director as well. Basically, when it comes to entertainment, there's nothing I don't do. For some time now, I've been mulling over bringing some of my other interests to Lr, and I'll be starting with the SAG Awards. How? Well, I've been a member of SAG for 6 years now and I also am part of the voting process. That means every year I am sent screeners of all the films being considered for awards.
Here's where a new running feature comes into play:
As I start receiving these screeners, I will write special reviews for each one and publish them here. Then, as we near the voting deadline,...

David Robb contributed to this story. Second in a series. Related: The Death Of Sarah Jones: Safety Concerns Raised Over ‘Midnight Rider’ Crew’s Previous Film In Georgia There seems to be a fear among crew members in the industry about refusing to take part when they feel something is unsafe on a set, or speaking out after an accident lest they will be seen as a problem and lose future work, ostracized from the industry they love. But that is not always the case. It has been done in the past and a few courageous individuals are doing it today in hopes of getting the conversation started in the film and TV industries for the sake of all of their brethren.
