[Editor’s note: This list was originally published in 2017. It has since been updated many times.]
With everything going the way it is in the world right now, we’re laughing to keep less cheery emotions at bay. At least this bizarre, still-very-much-in-progress century has already produced a slew of spectacular, silly, snarky, and cynical comedies: ready to fire up whenever you need a serotonin burst or distraction thanks to the ever-growing cadre of streaming services.
The pandemic may be in the rearview for the U.S. federal government, but the specter of war, a tortured economy, and human rights issues across the globe have occupied the minds of many instead. So, in desperate need of some humor, we thought it was more important than ever to give our Greatest Comedies of the 21st Century list, originally published in 2017, yet another rethink. Since the list was originally published, we’ve expanded it to 90 entries, including titles released since then that deserved including and other titles we somehow overlooked the first time.

Ever since Rocky took the world by storm in 1976, people have been enamored with the idea of an underdog fighting his way to victory. There is something about two people entering an arena and just seeing who is the best. Movies help us find the themes and metaphors we can use for this mentality in our everyday life. If you’re in a funk and then play the Rocky theme, you suddenly become more motivated than ever to get over that mountain called life. With Creed IV reportedly in the works, we figured this would be a great time to put together a list of the best fighting movies other than Rocky.

Letty's involvement in the globe-trotting heists shows her evolution into a gung-ho member of Dominic's crew in F9. Letty's fake death in Fast & Furious started a trend of characters returning from the dead in the Fast and Furious franchise. The return of characters like Letty and Gisele after their deaths adds an element of mystery to the Fast and Furious movies.

How does one repay a team of producers for launching its highest grossing film of all time? Give them the key to the studio — literally.

The Fast & Furious franchise needs to prioritize its female-fronted spin-off before Fast 11 to capitalize on the brand and maintain the momentum. Fast X sets up potential sequel storylines for Fast 11 and the upcoming Hobbs spin-off, but the best setup is for a long-awaited female-led movie featuring Gisele, Letty, and Cipher. A female-led spin-off would bridge the gap between Fast X and Fast 11, giving the characters their own spotlight and potentially bringing back other beloved female characters from the franchise.
One of the many sequel setups in Fast X proves that the Fast & Furious franchise needs to deliver its long-gestating female-fronted spin-off before Fast 11 happens. Fast X is the beginning of the end for the long-running Fast & Furious saga. It was intended to be the first chapter of a trilogy that would act as a finale for the franchise. The movie doesn't explicitly explain how this Fast & Furious character survived, but possible explanations include Mr. Nobody helping them fake their death or advanced technology healing their injuries. The Fast & Furious franchise started out grounded in street racing culture and had a simple approach, which resonated with audiences and led to its success. As the franchise progressed, the films became more over-the-top and unrealistic, with outrageous stunts and extravagant action sequences. While fans have been calling for a return to the franchise's roots, it may be difficult to dial back the absurdity and find a balance between the series' origins and its signature action-packed style.
Since beginning its life in 2001, the Fast & Furious franchise has gone from its roots grounded in the world of street racing to near superhero heights that have certainly walked the line of legitimate realism. Despite how over-the-top things have gotten, the franchise remains a global phenomenon that has grossed $7.3 billion globally to date across ten movies. That's nothing to sneeze at, but there is no denying that there has been a case of diminishing returns,...

After the release of Fast X last year, the franchise is gearing up to potentially end with the release of Fast 11.
Now, in an interview with Variety, Jason Momoa, the star who played the antagonist Dante Reyes in Fast X, revealed that he hasn't seen a script for the forthcoming Fast 11, even though Vin Diesel,...

Lost ran for six seasons and produced 121 groundbreaking episodes of television, but the series immediately found success as soon as its pilot episode aired. Lost was appointment television that set new standards for serialized storytelling and dramatic mysteries, and the show is still a major influence on the medium more than a decade later. Lost drew in viewers through its mysterious island, grander mythology, and non-linear storytelling that indulged in flashbacks, flashforwards, and even "flash-sideways." Lost generated suspense in many diverse ways, but character deaths were always major events that would change the series' status quo.
One of Lost's most striking details was the massive size of its cast. Season 1 had more than a dozen characters, and each new year would bring more individuals into the mix. A huge cast and a dangerous island mean that many of these characters are destined to become casualties. Lost is full of losses,...

The following contains spoilers for "Echo."
The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is vast, which can make it difficult for various stories to stand apart or make their mark. The MCU shows on Disney+ have even more working against them, as there's so much TV out there that divesting people's attention can be difficult. For the latest entry in the MCU, "Echo," the series drew its greatest strength not from other comic books or even superhero cinema, but from another major franchise: "The Fast and the Furious."
While it may not be intentional, "Echo" mirrors "Fast and Furious" in the way Maya (Alaqua Cox) is aided by her extended family, including her estranged grandmother Chula (Tantoo Cardinal), her cousins Biscuits (Cody Lightning) and Bonnie (Kawennáhere Devery Jacobs), her uncle Henry (Chaske Spencer), and her sorta-grandfather Skully (Graham Greene). Each character offers something very different to Maya, much like the way the...

This article contains mild spoilers for Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.
Between Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves and Baldur’s Gate 3, fans of the popular tabletop roleplaying game (Ttrpg) Dungeons & Dragons had a lot going for them in 2023. Both have a lot to offer longtime fans, and prove that the game can transcend mediums and still be thoroughly enjoyable. But what’s even more compelling about the love that Honor Among Thieves and Baldur’s Gate 3 have received is the fact that they’ve brought so many newcomers into the world of Dungeons & Dragons.
Even if you don’t know a thing about D&d, Honor Among Thieves is such a fun movie to watch. The story makes this fantasy world accessible, and the cast does a great job of bringing the film’s chaotic but well-meaning band of misfits to life. There are plenty of easter eggs for D&d lovers,...

When we surveyed our readers about Vin Diesel's best role in 2023, the results were rather illuminating. The actor's "Fast & Furious" counterpart, Dominic Toretto, came in shockingly low, lagging well behind The Iron Giant and Groot. That's right, a giant robot with a limited vocabulary and a sentient tree that only repeats the same sentence over and over were considered better roles for him than the Fast Fam's supposedly beloved patriarch. The number one spot went to Riddick B. Riddick, a morally flexible antihero who would just as soon leave his pals for dead than stick his neck out for them.
Why do these characters fit Diesel so well? Well, if I may be so bold, I would say it's because they all have one thing in common: They don't require him to be remotely sexy.
Now, it's worth clarifying that when I say Diesel isn't "sexy," I'm in no way trashing his appearance.

The "Fast & Furious" movies just haven't been the same since Paul Walker died. Oh sure, it's been entertaining watching the series relentlessly try to top itself (even sending its heroes to space for real) and later additions John Cena and Jason Momoa have helped inject some fresh energy into the Fast Saga's increasingly strained machinery. But Walker was always the heart and soul of these films. Without him, they just ring hollow.
Vin Diesel, whose offscreen conduct has overshadowed his contributions to these movies of late, needed Walker to play off of. The brotherhood that formed between their characters -- law-breaking street racer Dominic Toretto and undercover police officer Brian O'Conner -- in the original "The Fast and the Furious" extended to the actors' relationship in real life. As much as The Fast Saga has desperately tried to sell audiences on the "epic" romance between Dom and Letty Ortiz...

The year began, as they usually do, with so much promise. This was, after all, supposed to be the year that DC came roaring back, with Shazam! Fury of the Gods, the long-awaited The Flash, Blue Beetle, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Marvel had its own big slate. We were to be in a Shangri-La of screen superheroes. Yet in the end, it appeared the comic book movies failed audiences.
Or did they? Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, based on comics from the 1980s, is one of the top animated movies of the year. David Fincher’s stylish The Killer is based on a French graphic novel. And of course, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, is a towering achievement even beyond the medium of animation.
In other corners, movies based on toys, for the most part, are looked down upon and are considered jokes. But here, too, 2023 surprised us.

Fast X did a disservice to Jordana Brewster's character, Mia Toretto, after her redemption in F9. Mia's role in Fast X was limited and pushed her back to the sidelines, despite the progress made in F9. The franchise almost excluded Brewster and Mia altogether in Fast X, showing a lack of learning from past mistakes.
The Fast Saga has a history of underusing some characters, but Fast X utterly failed Jordana Brewster's Mia Toretto after doing so much to redeem the character in F9. Aside from Vin Diesel and Michelle Rodriguez, Brewster is the only other actor who has remained a crucial member of the "Fast Family" since the franchise launched in 2001. As the sister of Diesel's Dominic Toretto, she was always involved in the conflict, but her role grew after becoming romantically involved with Brian O'Conner (Paul Walker). Bradley Cooper makes a surprising appearance in Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves as Holga's ex-husband, Marlamin, a diminutive halfling. Cooper's appearance in the film came about through his connection with co-director John Francis Daley, whom he had previously worked with on the show Kitchen Confidential. The directors screened a rough-cut version of the film to show Cooper what they were going for, and he liked it enough to come to set and film his scene as a 3-inch halfling.
Bradley Cooper appears in Dungeon & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves in a small cameo, and he got his role in an interesting way. This episode of Revisited was Written by Cody Hamman, Narrated by Travis Hopson, Edited by Juan Jimenez, Produced by Adam Walton and Chris Bumbray, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
Over-the-top action sequences. Bone-crunching fights between titans of the action genre. A popular horror director getting his chance to make a massive-budget blockbuster. Fast & Furious 7 (watch it Here) brings all of those elements to the table. But it’s primarily remembered for being a production that was disrupted by tragedy. And we’re going to look into how it all played out in this episode of Revisited.
Universal Pictures doesn’t have a lot of major blockbuster franchises. In 2012, Jurassic Park had been dormant for a decade and the Bourne Identity movies had lost Jason Bourne. So they really only had Fast and Furious. It makes sense that while they were sending the sixth movie out into the world,...

Two different Fast & Furious movies have made it onto Netflix's global Top 10 English-language movies. The original 2001 film, The Fast and the Furious, and its seventh sequel, The Fate of the Furious, both hit the chart. The movies are from different moments in the franchise's chronology, highlighting the enduring popularity of the series.
The Fast & Furious movies are zooming onto the global Netflix chart in a peculiarly disjointed way. Over the past two decades, the high-octane action franchise has grown exponentially and now includes ten movies, the spinoff Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, and the animated show Fast & Furious Spy Racers. The franchise's star-studded ensemble cast includes Vin Diesel, the late Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Charlize Theron, Helen Mirren, Kurt Russell, and many more.

When Zac Eforn’s Ex-gf Vanessa Hudgens Was Mean To His Female Fans ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

Michelle Rodriguez's Letty is the franchise's biggest female character and the obvious pick to lead the all-female spinoff. Jordana Brewster's Mia deserves a big role in the spinoff to expand on her character and showcase her growth. Brie Larson's Tess is needed in the spinoff to explore the mystery surrounding her character and add her engaging screen presence to the team.
The Fast & Furious saga is meant to continue with an all-female-led movie, and casting the returning characters presents exciting options. An all-female spinoff could be the perfect way to continue the Fast &Furious story, as it will be able to retain the elements of the franchise that make it iconic while offering a new perspective. From the beginning, the franchise has been very male-dominated, and told male-centric stories, so offering the high-octane thrills of a Fast & Furious movie from a female perspective could be a welcome change of pace.

A seemingly simple stunt in the Fast and Furious franchise resulted in a stuntman suffering brain damage and a $1 million fine. The accident occurred due to last-minute changes to the stunt and negligence in checking the safety line. The film industry has seen recent high-profile accidents, including a stunt double's paralysis and a fatal shooting on the set of the movie Rust. Legal cases are still pending.
The Fast and Furious franchise is known for its spectacular stunts and almost unbelievable car chases, but it seems a relatively straightforward stunt has landed the production’s filmmakers in hot water to the tune of $1million. Updated to clarify entity that was fined: The UK production entity behind 2021’s Fast & Furious 9: The Fast Saga has been fined £800,000 ($1 million) after one of its stuntmen suffered brain damage after a fall during production.
Joe Watts suffered a broken skull after falling eight metres onto concrete and landing on his head, in an accident during the filming of Fast 9 at Warner Bros’ studios in Hertfordshire, UK, in July 2019.
The BBC reports that a judge considered Watts “lucky to be alive,” after hearing that his safety line became detached during a stunt that was rehearsed but changed during filming.
