In early 2024, the cast and crew of Criminal Minds: Evolution have finally begun the active phase of production, and filming has been quietly underway for months. So far, not much is known about the upcoming Season 2, except for the core cast members.
Nevertheless, Paramount never stops teasing us with new updates that, despite their lightheartedness, actually provide a lot of interesting details that fans actively start speculating about. For example, a new set video featuring the cast of Evolution was recently released, and despite its playful tone, the video was surprisingly insightful. It showed us the return of a rather controversial character who is sure to cause a lot of drama at Bau.

Paramount has rebooted Criminal Minds, and starting in November 2022, we were once again immersed in the story of the Behavioral Analysis Unit (Bau) agents as they grappled with criminal minds and personal lives. Now, the story has taken an even darker turn, it has been released in a streaming format rather than the traditional TV broadcast one, and the show itself has been subtitled as Evolution. And before we knew it, a new season was already in production (the second season of Evolution and the seventeenth since Criminal Minds premiered on CBS in 2005).
While fans wait in anticipation, the upcoming Season 17 has already had its fair share of details and speculation. Josh Stewart, who has played Will Lamontagne Jr. since Season 2, will be leaving the show, while many are sure that everyone's favorite Spencer Reid will be back, as Matthew Gray Gubler's schedule has finally been cleared, and the...

The Bau is getting an assist from a Desperate Housewives alum.
TVLine reports that Felicity Huffman has closed a deal to guest star during Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 2, and her character has ties to the original series.
Huffman is playing Dr. Jill Gideon, described as “a brilliant biological psychiatrist who winds up helping the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit investigate a murderous conspiracy theory.”
If that surname sounds familiar, it’s because she’s the wife of Jason Gideon (Mandy Patinkin), so she has plenty of ties to the team.
Jill isn’t too fond of getting involved with the Bau because of her past, which concludes a “complicated history” with David Rossi (Joe Mantegna).
However, her expertise is needed because the team is struggling to crack open the Gold Star mystery.

Felicity Huffman is joining “Criminal Minds: Evolution” as a brilliant doctor.
Variety reports that the “Desperate Housewives” actress is joining the Season 2 cast of Paramount+’s serialized revival of the long-running CBS crime procedural.
Huffman will guest star as Dr. Jill Gideon. Gideon is described as “a brilliant biological psychiatrist.” She’s the ex-wife of Jason Gideon (Mandy Patinkin), the former leader of the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit. She has a complicated history with her late ex-husband and his Bau successor David Rossi (Joe Mantegna), which makes her reluctant to get involved with the team’s investigation into the murderous and mysterious Gold Star conspiracy. But her skills could be the key to cracking the case, so she agrees to help.

Despite scoring a speedy renewal, the long-running drama that morphed into a streaming series a year ago hasn't yet entered production.
Earlier this year, there was word that filming would begin imminently, so fresh episodes were on the air for fans quickly.
Unfortunately, that didn't happen.
The WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes brought Hollywood to a standstill, meaning no new episodes could be produced.
Recently, both guilds reached deals with the AMPTP to fairly compensate writers and actors for their work, clearing the way for production to get underway.
Paget Brewster took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to respond to a fan to give some updates about the show and it's good news.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 16 finale, “Dead End.”] Criminal Minds: Evolution might have ended its 16th season with the FBI suffering a loss — Deputy Director Bailey (Nicholas D’Agosto), we were just starting to like you! — but every member of the Behavioral Analysis Unit (Bau) — David Rossi (Joe Mantegna), Emily Prentiss (Paget Brewster), Jennifer “J.J.” Jareau (A.J. Cook), Penelope Garcia (Kirsten Vangsness), Dr. Tara Lewis (Aisha Tyler), and Luke Alvez (Adam Rodriguez) — survived. And the good news is they’ll all be back for Season 17 (picked up in January). “The main cast members are all coming back,” showrunner Erica Messer confirms to TV Insider. “And then deals are still being made for some of the other faces you saw this year.” But what about the two profilers with the Bau at the end of the original run (2005-2020 on CBS) we didn’t see but only heard tidbits about in Season...

Well, thank goodness the show has been renewed because Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 1 Episode 10 opened more questions than it answered.
The most shocking thing about that is how little there was to go on once the elephant in the room surfaced.
Gold Star has been Elias Voit's, well, Lee Duval's, big secret, and it led to one death and a whole lot of extra security when the case was said and done.
Coming into Criminal Minds: Evolution, I imagined that each season would feature an unsub.
Now it looks like Zach Gilford will be around for a while.
If you read much from me, you know how difficult I find naming conventions. If I get hung up on whether to use first or last names, you can imagine that deciding what to call Sicarius/Elias Voit/Lee Duval now that his real name has been unearthed is quite the conundrum.

The Attorney General may have closed the case, but she's going to have egg on her face when the reality of that decision strikes her.
Someone came forward with information that backed the Bau's assessment of the situation, and Elias admitted aloud the number of people he's killed. This is not a man we want to ignore for lack of evidence.
In the face of the Bau's professional and Elias's personal setbacks, Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 1 Episode 8 has Elias at his worst and Rossi at his best. That combination will be lethal for Elias Voit.
Is there anything better than Joe Mantegna when Rossi's in the zone? We saw him there during the premiere, but he cooled his jets for a while afterward.
When the Ag shut the door on the Sicarius case, Rossi took it as an invitation to prove the Bau's value to the world at large, and...

The police procedural drama, Criminal Minds, which centers around a team of FBI profilers as they study the worst criminals the U.S. has to offer, dominated network television on CBS before it moved to the streaming service Paramount +, under its new name Criminal Minds: Evolution. Criminal Minds’ perfect mix of celebrity guest stars, and the show’s characters having strong chemistry kept fans hooked for 16 seasons.
However, all that success didn’t distract viewers from noticing the vast number of cast changes Criminal Minds has endured over the years. While almost all of the changes came as a shock, the reasoning behind some cast members’ departures differed vastly, with some leaving by force, some due to budget cuts, and others even choosing to leave for the sake of their sanity.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 16 Episode 5 “Oedipus Wrecks”.] We know that the Bau is going to start to get some wins against UnSub Elias Voit (Zach Gilford), who’s running a network of serial killers, but at the midway point of Criminal Minds: Evolution, the agents may have just lost two of their own. It all begins with the next case-of-the-week: A man using a custom-made dental device (with razors!) to bite (multiple times!) the women he’s killing — and the signs of escalation mean he’s building up to someone. Deputy Director Bailey (Nicholas D’Agosto) previously dated one of the victims — and she broke his heart, as David Rossi (Joe Mantegna) notes — so he takes a personal interest in it. Bailey’s the one to give them a lead: Beltway Elite, a dating app for government employees. Emily Prentiss (Paget Brewster) takes advantage of this and finds a way to...

‘Criminal Minds: Evolution’ Star Joe Mantegna on Rossi’s Dark Place: ‘Give It a Little Time’ (Video)
While Joe Mantegna hadn’t been expecting to step back into his role as Special Agent David Rossi after Criminal Minds ended a 15-season run in 2020, he also wasn’t entirely shocked it happened. “There was really no indication at the time when we ended,” he tells TV Insider in the video interview above. “But I’ve been in this business long enough to know anything’s possible and sometimes things happen for a reason and I think this was a good enough reason and so here we are.” Here is Criminal Minds: Evolution, a 16th season with the members of the Behavioral Analysis Unit (Bau), and this time, the profilers have one UnSub (Zach Gilford’s Elias Voit) with a network of serial killers to hunt down over 10 episodes on Paramount+. That move to streaming does give them more room to dig into a case like they are. “For the most part,...

Anyone else grateful for the Bau this Thanksgiving? Turkey day was a red-letter day for Criminal Minds fans: The darkly wry procedural about the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit reunited its cast to launch a new iteration on Paramount+, making the case once again for its 15-season popularity. The instantly addictive Criminal Minds: Evolution — bringing back stars Joe Mantegna as Unit Chief David Rossi, Paget Brewster as Section Chief Emily Prentiss, Kirsten Vangsness as eccentric tech analyst Penelope Garcia, and A.J. Cook, Aisha Tyler, and Adam Rodriguez as Supervisory Special Agents Jennifer “JJ” Jareau, Tara Lewis and Luke Alvez — picks up nearly three years after wrapping with the mostly intact team of profilers tracking a very organized madman (Zach Gilford) and his acolytes. “It’s not over. If you’re a fan of Criminal Minds and are looking to rewatch — or watch for the first time — ahead of the upcoming revival (with original stars returning), you have options to stream its 15 seasons. However, not every streamer on which it’s available has all the seasons. If you want to watch all 15 seasons, you can check them out on both Paramount+ (which will be home to the revival) and Hulu. If you don’t have either but do have Netflix, the first 12 seasons are now available again, after the show left the streamer at the end of June. These options are available ahead of the drama returning for a 10-episode revival on Paramount+. Updated with Paramount+ confirmation, additional details: After more than a year of on- and off- dealmaking, Paramount+ on Thursday confirmed it has ordered to series a Criminal Minds revival starring six fan favorite cast members, Joe Mantegna, Kirsten Vangsness, Adam Rodriguez, A.J. Cook, Aisha Tyler and Paget Brewster. As we previously reported, also back is the series’ longtime executive producer/showrunner Erica Messer who closed her deal to return earlier a couple of months ago. The actors’ contracts had been contingent on Messer signing a pact with ABC Signature where she is under an overall deal.
As Deadline reported exclusively, by February, Criminal Minds studios ABC Signature and CBS Studios had reached a license agreement with Paramount+ for a 10-episode new season of Criminal Minds. The last several months were spent getting Messer and the cast officially on board, triggering a formal green light, with production slated to begin Aug.
