Actors are drawn to biopics like moths to a particularly bright, often gold-tinted flame because it allows them to test their impressionistic mettle, to inhabit the real life of someone who’s often larger than life, to chart how an extraordinary human being is transformed into an emblem of their moment. Audiences are drawn to biopics because we love actors, or at the very least we like seeing them trying to fill the shoes of these renowned figures and find the person beneath the symbolic purpose, shouted slogans, and prosthetic schnozzes.

Colman Domingo may be a name unfamiliar to some, but the actor is currently stealing the spotlight after getting nominated for the Best Actor category for this year’s Oscar event. He starred in George C. Wolfe’s Rustin as the openly gay Black civil rights leader Bayard Rustin.

Bradley Cooper’s stellar record of 12 Oscar nominations has cemented his status as one of Hollywood’s elite. But despite being constantly praised for his exceptional work, he is one of the most nominated people in Oscar history without having received a single victory.
Apparently, he is not able to capitalize on any of his three Oscar nominations this year for writing, producing, and acting in the Leonard Bernstein biopic, Maestro. This means he has now dropped close to a record-breaking twelve nominations over the course of his career. It appears that he has joined a Hollywood unlucky club, as his acting career has soured with an unfair zero Oscar wins despite 12 nominations.

When Colman Domingo steps to the stage to introduce the SXSW premiere of his new film “Sing Sing” — a deeply affecting depiction of the Rehabilitation Through the Arts program at the titular maximum security prison in New York — he gets a standing ovation before a second of the film has screened. That might be in part because, less than 48 hours later, Domingo will be stepping inside the Dolby Theater for the 96th Academy Awards, nominated for his performance as civil rights activist Bayard Rustin in “Rustin.”
This wasn’t even the world premiere for “Sing Sing” — that was at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival, where A24 scooped it up for a theatrical release this July. But as Domingo explains to Variety following the film’s screening at SXSW — where the film received another, much longer standing ovation — there was never any question for him about whether he would attend.

Jonathan Majors first appeared in the MCU as Victor Timely in 2021, and later as Kang the Conqueror in “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” in 2023. This movie kicked off Phase 5, starting the Multiverse Saga. However, “Quantumania” didn’t do too well. To make matters worse, right after the movie came out, Majors, who played the new main villain for the upcoming MCU phases, was arrested.
He was accused of hitting someone in the face, causing a cut behind their ear, and grabbing their hand and neck, which supposedly led to a bruised neck and a broken finger. Although Majors’ lawyers said these accusations were false, he was still found guilty and Disney fired him.
Now, there’s a lot of talk about who might replace him, with some saying the character Doom might take over as the main villain, and others suggesting that the “Kang Dynasty” movie might be dropped. The...

Jonathan Majors debuted in the MCU as Victor Timely back in 2021, and then as Kang the Conqueror in ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’ in 2023 in what was the first movie of Phase 5, also known as the beginning of the Multiverse Saga. ‘Quantumania’ wasn’t exactly successful, adding insult to injury, soon after the release of the blockbuster movie, the actor behind the villain who was supposed to mark the next few phases of the MCU was arrested.
According to the charges, Majors allegedly struck the alleged victim ‘about the face with an open hand, causing substantial pain and a laceration behind her ear.’ He also allegedly grabbed her hand and neck, causing bruising on the neck and a broken finger. And while his lawyers quickly provided evidence that such a thing never took place, the case was far from over, and Majors was eventually found guilty and fired by Disney.

Jonathan Majors was Marvel’s trump card in the MCU Phases 4 to 6, playing the ultimate villain Kang. However, Majors entangled himself in a misdemeanor assault and harassment case filed by his ex-girlfriend Grace Jabbari. His conviction in the case forced Disney to fire the actor from the role. Among the potential replacements for his role, Euphoria star Colman Domingo stood out among fans. Two fan-made art, portraying him as Kang, will prove why he is perfect for the role.

Hollywood is often criticized about the amount of follow through there is on promises for diversity and inclusivity. Yet there is much to celebrate about the films that are being made about Black life, and the 15th annual awards by the African American Film Critics Assn. will do just that on Feb. 21.
“American Fiction,” “The Color Purple” and “Origin” — named best comedy, musical and drama, respectively — all scored multiple film honors and inclusion on Aafca’s list of top 10 films of the year. Performers including Colman Domingo, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Lily Gladstone, Da’Vine Joy Randolph and Danielle Brooks will also be celebrated during the ceremony, hosted once again by Roy Wood Jr.

Progress has happened so fast since homophobia within the African American community began to break down that younger viewers watching this biopic by George C Wolfe may not remember just how bad it used to be. It’s not just that it was an issue in 1963, when it was equally prevalent amongst white people, but that it persisted at that level well into this century, shored up by a white regime which recognised its usefulness for creating division, to the point where stories about LGBTQ+ heroes like Bayard Rustin simply could not be told. Now that the silence is broken, the moment is right to tell his story and to celebrate the solidarity vital to progressing equality for everyone.

Colman Domingo — with Oscar, BAFTA and SAG Awards nominations under his belt for his powerful portrait of influential civil rights organizer Bayard Rustin in the Netflix movie Rustin — wants people to know that he’s “having the time of my life” after 33 years in the industry as a proud journeyman actor. And he’s had the thrill of discussing diplomatic matters with former President Obama.
“I know so many journeymen in this industry, and I feel like I’m a journeyman that broke through,” he tells me.
That he’s having a good time is evident from the whirlwind of red carpets the actor has graced in recent weeks — dressed, as he puts it, “like a peacock.”

In terms of how many biographical performances they each include, the 2023 and 2024 acting Oscar lineups are staggeringly different. Whereas only two portrayals of real people (Austin Butler as Elvis Presley in “Elvis” and Ana de Armas as Marilyn Monroe in “Blonde”) were recognized last year, a whopping 10 are presently nominated, constituting the highest such rate (50%) in five years. What’s more, this is only the third time in almost a century of Oscars history that real-life characters aren’t outnumbered by fictional ones.
This year’s near-record biographical performance rate ranks only behind the 60% ones of 2016 and 2019. Unsurprisingly, three of the four eventual winners in both previous cases belonged to those majorities. This includes leads Leonardo DiCaprio as Hugh Glass, Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury, and Olivia Colman as Queen Anne as well as supporting players Mark Rylance as Rudolf Abel, Alicia Vikander as Gerda Wegener, and Mahershala Ali as Don Shirley.

Samuel L. Jackson, Jeffrey Wright, and David Oyelowo have all portrayed civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jr., whose Atlanta sit-ins, Montgomery bus boycotts, and peaceful protests desegregated the nation. When Kelvin Harrison Jr. was first offered the role, he was overwhelmed by the weight of the historical figure and turned it down.
“I still was a little bit scared and unsure if that was something that I needed to be participating in,” Harrison tells Rolling Stone. “I didn’t really see what I could offer in this moment, and...

At some point in middle school or high school, most people were exposed to two different types of rudimentary essay-writing. There’s the five-paragraph essay, that goes, intro/thesis-body-body-body-conclusion. And there’s the compare-and-contrast essay, in which you start with two seemingly opposed subjects and unify them by juxtaposing the ways they’re different, but also the ways in which they’re similar. From a distance of decades it’s easy to mock both essay structures, but they’re both incredibly useful ways of teaching young writers to approach complicated topics.
I’m not sure if the new season of National Geographic’s Genius anthology is the most ambitious compare-and-contrast essay every written, but MLK/X is at least a generally well-intentioned illustration of both pros and cons of the format.

“Rustin” star Colman Domingo has just been named an Oscar nominee for best actor for his powerhouse performance in the biographical drama. As he arrives to record the latest episode of Variety’s Awards Circuit Podcast, Domingo says he wants to stay present in this moment, noting that he was “waiting around for a certain call for a few hours.”
That “certain call” would former President Barack Obama, who is the founder of the production company Higher Ground, which financed the George C. Wolfe drama.
A fashionable and charismatic figure (who’s also participating in “Dry January”), Domingo says that Presidential call came about one hour before he entered the studio. Doing his best Obama impression, Domingo says the first thing the former President said was, “Colman! Congratulations! Enjoy this moment. Enjoy every step of this. It’s a wonderful thing. Have fun.”

Colman Domingo is already unforgettable, but now he’ll tackle the role to prove it.
Domingo will be starring as the legendary singer Nat King Cole in a movie musical from a script he co-wrote, Variety has learned exclusively. He will also be making his feature directing debut on the project.
“I’ve been working on it quietly for a few years,” he says during a Variety Awards Circuit Podcast episode. “It’s something I’m looking forward to putting together with some great partners.”
It’s not yet known which period Domingo’s film will focus on. One of the most notable moments of his life was on April 10, 1956: while performing before an all-white audience in Birmingham, Ala., a group of four white men attacked him while performing. After the authorities apprehended the men, the singer returned to the stage, with the remaining audience members giving him a 10-minute standing ovation.

This Oscar season, Colman Domingo became the first Afro Latino to receive a Best Actor nomination from the Academy, for his powerhouse performance in “Rustin.” It’s a deserving nod for a performer who has only recently broken through, but already has an incredible resume of performances to his name.
Initially a stage actor, Domingo first gained acting recognition in 2008 for his role in the ensemble of “Passing Strange”; he earned Tony and Olivier nominations for his acclaimed role in the 2010 musical “The Scottsboro Boys.” Despite his onstage success, his attempts to cross over to television and film proved more difficult. In an interview with the New York Times, he spoke about considering quitting acting entirely after facing numerous rejections for bit parts in prestige dramas. Colman Domingo received his first Oscar nomination on Tuesday morning for Rustin, in the Best Actor for a Leading Role category. Anyone would be thrilled with a nomination, but Domingo says being recognized for this film in particular is special. “It’s very important for me, especially after a film like Rustin, that [Bayard Rustin] is pulled out of the shadows of history, and he’s taken his rightful place in the center of his own story.”
Rustin tells the story of Bayard Rustin, a key figure of the civil rights movement and architect of the 1963 March on Washington, whose story was marginalized in history because he was openly gay. “It took people like Barack and Michelle Obama, and their production company, to say that this story is necessary and vital and potent,” he says.

Nearly a dozen actors will now have an Academy Awards section added to their Awards and Nominations page on Wikipedia. Bright and early on Tuesday morning, Zazie Beetz and Jack Quaid announced the 2024 Oscars nominations live from Los Angeles. With 20 nominees across four acting categories, some names were past nominees and winners — like Jodie Foster, Emma Stone, and Bradley Cooper. But 10 nominees saw their names announced for the first time in their careers.

Updated with full list, more details: The nominations for the 96th Oscars unveiled Tuesday has focused the race around a real Best Picture competition between Universal’s Oppenheimer (13 nominations), Apple Original Films’ Killers of the Flower Moon (10 noms), Searchlight’s Poor Things (11 noms) and Warner Bros’ Barbie (eight noms).
That means an impressive 21 nominations for Barbenheimer, the one-two summer punch that had a collective gross of almost $2.4 billion at the global box office, and did as much to restore moviegoing as Tom Cruise and Top Gun: Maverick did the previous year as the business struggled to rebound from the pandemic. Oppenheimer and Barbie got to fully promote their films right before the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes that hindered many of the other films that bowed in the fall because guild members were forbidden from stumping for their films.

“Oppenheimer,” a sprawling examination of the dawn of the Atomic Age, kicked off the race for the 96th Academy Awards on Tuesday, earning 13 nominations. It was followed closely behind by “Poor Things,” a feminist fantasy set in a steampunk world of mutants and male chauvinist pigs, which earned 11 nominations.
“Killers of the Flower Moon,” a historical crime drama about a vast conspiracy to rob the Osage Nation of its oil wealth, received 10 nominations. Both “Oppenheimer” and “Killers of the Flower Moon,” drawn from painful chapters of American history, were recognized at a moment of political unrest and division in the country, which seemed to give their dark subject matter an added resonance.
“Barbie,” last year’s biggest box office hit, earned eight nominations — even as Greta Gerwig, the film’s director, and Margot Robbie, its star and producer, were both shut out. Released on the same weekend as “Oppenheimer,” the...

Colman Domingo shared this week what former President Barack Obama told him about his Rustin character’s influence on modern-day politics.
“President Barack Obama told me backstage when we were in D.C., ‘You know Colman, there would be no Barack Obama if there was no Bayard Rustin,'” Domingo recalled during an appearance on Today‘s Sunday Sitdown with Willie Geist.
Rustin, produced by Barack and Michelle Obama’s production company, Higher Ground, tells the story of civil rights organizer and activist Bayard Rustin, who planned the 1963 March on Washington where Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech.
President Obama posthumously awarded Rustin the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2013. The film, released on Netflix in November 2023, takes place during the weeks leading up to the historic march and explores Rustin’s identity as a gay Black man.
