It’s a zoo out there. In 1990, the New York Yankees were a disaster; these were not the Derek Jeter years.
With a 67-95 record, 1990 was the first time in 24 years the Bronx Bombers finished in last place in the division, a whopping 21 games behind the rival the Boston Red Sox. It was the team’s worst record since 1912, two years before Babe Ruth even entered Major League Baseball (and eight years before he joined the Yankees). How bad were the 1990 Yankees? They threw a no-hitter and lost.
A new docuseries coming soon to Peacock, “Bronx Zoo ’90: Crime, Chaos, and Baseball,” gives the abysmal season a “The Last Dance” spin, covering both the drama on the field and off. Like what? Well, there was the time when Yankee owner George Steinbrenner paid a notorious gambler to dig up dirt on superstar player Dave Winfield. That gambler is interviewed in...

“It all started with ‘Dancing with the Stars’,” says NFL Hall of Fame player DeMarcus Ware while discussing his latest venture into reality TV. He performed as Koala in Wednesday night’s “Transformers” episode of “The Masked Singer.” “Just getting uncomfortable doing something that you’ve never done before and making it to the end. Then, what really sparked my interest was when I sang “The National Anthem” at the Hall of Fame Game. I was like, ‘Okay, you’ve got a little bit of vocals.'” Watch his exclusive video interview with Gold Derby senior editor Denton Davidson above.
As Koala, DeMarcus sang “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” by Tears for Fears on “Transformers Night.” Following Lovebird’s elimination, Koala was the second voted out in the episode. Usher has returned to one of the biggest stages in music for a headlining performance at the 2024 Super Bowl Halftime Show, which included guest appearances by Lil Jon, Ludacris, Alicia Keys, and more.
Marking the second time Usher has performed at the Halftime Show (thanks to his guest spot during The Black Eyed Peas’ performance in 2011), the pop star took charge at Super Bowl Lviii, taking the stage for a display of gyrating, roller skating, and pop nostalgia. Running through some of his biggest hits — like “My Boo,” “Omg,” “Yeah!” and more — Usher’s showmanship and the energy of his guests carried the performance, almost making up for the fact that the television mix was sub-par.
In addition to Lil Jon, Ludacris, and Keys, Usher was joined by the likes of H.E.R. — who provided a Prince-esque guitar solo — Jermaine Dupri, will.i.am, and more. Watch clips of the performance below.

Plot: Jaycen “Two Js” Jennings is a washed-up ex-professional football star who has hit rock bottom. When Jaycen is sentenced to community service coaching the Underdoggs, an unruly pee-wee football team in his hometown of Long Beach, California, he sees it as an opportunity to rebuild his public image and turn his life around. As Jaycen works to transform the foul-mouthed Underdoggs into top-notch champions, he reconnects with his past, including an old flame and a few of his ex-teammates, and rediscovers his love of the game.
Review: Underdog stories have always been popular fodder for movies. Redemption stories about athletes and tales of scrappy kids needing a mentor are equally popular. From The Bad News Bears to Little Giants and The Mighty Ducks, sports comedies have always found success. With The Underdoggs, that appeal is tested by taking the formula that made those aforementioned films successful and injecting them...

On a broader level, sports has become a cornerstone of the Amazon-owned streaming service, notably NFL Thursday Night Football. For the second consecutive week, the Colorado Buffaloes played in the most-watched college football game of the season.
This time, however, the Buffaloes were not able to take home a win on the field. More than 10M people tuned in to watch Colorado take on Oregon, which ultimately won 41-6. Colorado has now played in four of the top seven most-watched Cfb matchups this season.
Unlike last week, when the Colorado-Colorado State game blew past all other Cfb matchups in terms of viewers, the Colorado-Oregon game had some competition. Ohio State’s 17-14 victory over Notre Dame came in a close second with 9.98M people watching that game later Saturday. In third place was Fsu-Clemson with about 6.7M viewers for that Saturday 12 p.m. Et game on ABC.
A loss for Colorado this week may not necessarily translate to a decline in viewers next week. The Buffaloes take on No.

The University of Colorado is soaking up the sports spotlight. NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders leads the Buffaloes as its new coach, and with him comes the first time in the college’s history that home games have sold out, reports Colorado Public Radio.
It’s not just tickets that the former football and baseball player is selling out. After Colorado State Rams coach Jay Novell threw shade at Sanders for wearing hats and sunglasses at press conferences, Sanders played up his Blenders Prime shades and secured a deal with the eyewear brand. Yellowstone can still draw a crowd — even for a repeat.
The Paramount Network hit made its CBS debut Sunday night and pulled in a solid audience. The broadcast network is airing the series, beginning with its first season, on Sunday nights in the fall to help fill out its strike-affected primetime lineup.
It worked out well Sunday, with a two-episode block of Yellowstone averaging 6.83 million viewers. The show got an assist from the day’s biggest NFL game (25.78 million viewers) bleeding into primetime and the season opener for 60 Minutes (11.8 million). Big Brother closed out CBS’ night with 2.78 million viewers, below its usual Sunday average this season thanks largely to a late start time (10:49 p.m. Et).
By comparison, the first half of Yellowstone’s fifth season (which will be its last season) averaged 8.21 million same-day viewers for Paramount Network in November and December 2022. On CBS, The Equalizer drew...

Jackson State women’s basketball coach Tomekia Reed has blasted CBS‘ 60 Minutes for the way it portrayed Jackson, Mississippi, in Sunday’s (September 17) feature on former NFL player turned coach Deion Sanders. The segment on the show saw Coach Prime, as Sanders is known, interviewed by 60 Minutes correspondent Jon Wertheim, focusing on the legendary NFL cornerback’s move from head coach of Jackson State to the University of Colorado Boulder. In the report, Wertheim highlighted the differences between Jackson and Boulder, including things such as housing and environment. “The distance between Jackson and Boulder is a thousand miles, and immeasurably further culturally,” Wertheim said. “Sanders went from a city that is 83 percent black to one that is one percent black. From a place with a water crisis to a kind of hipster college town where there’s a shop devoted to kites.” During Wertheim’s voice-over, the video showed...

The premiere episode aired on Sunday to 6.56M viewers, making it the top entertainment program of the week, according to fast nationals from Nielsen. It’s also the largest audience for a scripted series on the broadcast networks since the season finale of NCIS in late May.

These are early numbers, and this post will be updated when the final data is in. However, CBS is estimating that the audience will increase to around 6.82M viewers when out-of-home viewing is included.
The episode also scored an early 0.9 rating among adults 25-54, which CBS predicts will jump to a 1.0 after Ooh viewing.

Skydance Sports, NFL Films and the Jerry Jones family are collaborating on what they call a “defining” docuseries about the Dallas Cowboys and the arc of Jones as the owner and builder of the franchise over 30-plus years.
As president and general manager, Jones is credited with engineering a massive turnaround that led to three Super Bowl titles in the 1990s. While the Lombardi Trophy has remained out of reach during the past quarter-century-plus, Jones and his family have shepherded the rise of the Cowboys to the status of the most valuable franchise in professional sports.
Using never-before-seen footage from the NFL Films archive, the as-yet-untitled series will trace Jones’ rise from the son of an Arkansas community store owner to the top of the pro sports heap.
