The ghost with the most is coming back 30 years later and anticipation is high. Not much is known about the long gestating “Beetlejuice 2,” that’s set to reunite Michael Keaton in the title role, alongside Jenna Ortega, Winona Ryder and director Tim Burton. But the film’s cinematographer, Haris Zambarloukos, shed a little light on what fans can anticipate.
During the press junket for Zambarloukos’ latest film, Kenneth Branagh’s ghost story “A Haunting in Venice,” the cinematographer explained how Branagh and Burton boast some similarities in their filming style. “Both Kenneth and Tim, in these two stories wanted to work, in-camera,” Zambarloukos said, meaning that both films were shot in strict sequence so to be edited while filming.
“At its heart ‘Beetlejuice [2]’ is a story about a family,” Zambarloukos said. “And now it’s 30 years later and what are the intricacies and the human condition in keeping a...

May the Force be with… Emmy voters? Disney Plus amassed an impressive 40 Emmy nominations this year (up from 34 last year) thanks to its stable of “Star Wars” saga hits, which accounted for more than half of the mouse house’s total haul of 23 bids — nine for “The Mandalorian,” eight for “Andor,” five for “Obi-Wan Kenobi” and one for docuseries “Light & Magic.”
Although “Mandalorian” nabbed nine bids, the real success story this year is “Andor,” scoring a Best Drama Series nomination for its debut season plus writing and directing bids and five Creative Arts noms. The latest live-action series in the Disney-era “Star Wars” franchise, “Andor” serves as a prequel to “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” (2016) and also by extension to the original Oscar-winning classic “Star Wars” (1977).

The following post contains spoilers for "Andor."
"Andor" has completed the first of two seasons in the story leading up to "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story," and we've added some great new characters to a galaxy far, far away. Since this is "Star Wars" we're talking about, it only makes sense that one of the very best of them is a droid. It was easy to fall in love with the boxy B2EMO, the companion to Maarva (Fiona Shaw), Cassian's (Diego Luna) adoptive mother. He is a bit grumpy here and there, and he's not so good at lying, but mostly, he's just watching out for the friend he loves and is protective of her after so many years together. Droids may have a shelf life, but if they stay in good condition, they'll sadly outlive many of their human buddies.

There is no shortage of behind-the-scenes stories about the making of the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy. Plenty has been written about how it was J.J. Abrams and Michael Arndt’s idea to excise Luke Skywalker almost completely from The Force Awakens, ditching the notes and outlines George Lucas had handed over to Disney during the Lucasfilm deal. And how Rian Johnson returned to some of Lucas’ original Sequel Trilogy ideas for The Last Jedi, especially when it came to Luke training a new generation of Jedi. Meanwhile, Lucas’ idea for our heroes to explore the “microbiotic world” of the Whills remains untouched.
Then there’s all the drama surrounding the making of the final chapter of the trilogy. As we all know now, “creative differences” saw director Colin Trevorrow step away from Episode IX. The original script, titled “Duel of the Fates,” which he wrote with Derek Connelly, was ditched...

“Babe” turns 25 on August 4, and the sweet, endearing family drama from Down Under, about an orphan pig winning a sheepherding competition, revolutionized the talking animal movie in 1995. The underdog also became a surprising box office hit and Oscar contender for Universal.
“Babe” earned $64 million domestically and $254 million worldwide, and grabbed seven Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director (for Chris Noonan), Best Adapted Screenplay (Miller & Noonan), and Best Supporting Actor (for James Cromwell as avuncular Farmer Hoggett). Yet its lone prize was for Best Visual Effects, beating Universal’s heavily favored “Apollo 13.”
Thanks to the landmark collaboration between VFX studio Rhythm & Hues (overlaying CG animation over live-action animal footage), and more advanced animatronics from London-based Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, and Australia’s John Cox’s Creature Shop and Robotech, “Babe” altered the landscape of the industry. “We weren’t just changing technology, we were changing filmmaking,” said Oscar-winning...

One of the most popular new characters introduced in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was Babu Frik, the diminutive droidsmith who performed a system restart on C-3Po when the heroes needed to unlock Threepio’s translation of the Sith dagger as part of their hunt for Palpatine. After that, it appeared he died along with the rest of the planet Kijimi when the First Order blew it up. Thankfully, though, the little guy’s ultimately revealed to have survived alongside Zorii Bliss by the film’s end. Hey-hey!

Palpatine may have been revealed as still alive in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, but that doesn’t mean he was in the best of shape. When Kylo Ren discovers him in his Sith temple on Exegol, the former emperor is little more than a corpse, with his decrepit form being hoisted about the place by a gigantic life-support system. His appearance is pretty “bleurgh”-worthy as it is, then, but things could have been even more gruesome given the initial plans for his design.
Creature and make-up supervisor Neal Scanlan has given an in-depth interview with Collider in which he revealed a lot of fascinating details about how certain concepts and characters evolved over the filmmaking process. In the case of Darth Sidious, Scanlan explained that initial sketches depicted Palpatine in a greater extent of deathly decay, even comparing him to the monstrous vampire from Nosferatu.

J.J. Abrams cut a lot of crucial information from the “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” theatrical cut (see all the backlash over Palpatine’s return and Rey’s father), but it turns out entire creatures that were handmade for the production were also left on the cutting room floor. “Star Wars” visual effects supervisor Neal Scanlan recently told Collider about a monster called The Eye of Webbish Bog that was built for “Rise of Skywalker.” The monster, which is included in Rae Carson’s upcoming novelization of the film, was to be featured in a scene in which Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) hunts for the Sith Wayfinder. The Eye is described as “a spidery Lovecraftian giant.”
“I think it maybe was too lengthy an explanation for something that [director J.J. Abrams] was able to explain in the movie much quicker,” Scanlan says about why the monster was cut from production. “J.J.

A long time ago at the 1978 Academy Awards, Star Wars won six competitive Oscars plus a special achievement award. More than four decades later, will trophies for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker bookend the series?
On Monday, Rise of Skywalker earned nominations for its score (composer John Williams, who won an Oscar for the 1978 film, nabbed his 47th nomination); sound editing (Matthew Wood and David Acord); and VFX (Roger Guyett, Neal Scanlan, Patrick Tubach and Dominic Tuohy), with a mix of practical and digital effects.

The whole “Star Wars” franchise is deeply “connected to the visual effects world,” explains “The Rise of Skywalker” visual effects supervisor Roger Guyett. “It’s very dear to our hearts for all sorts of different reasons.” So when it came to this concluding film in the Skywalker saga, he and his team wanted to maintain “the integrity of every aspect of it.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Guyett and his fellow visual effects artists Neal Scanlan, Patrick Tubach and Dominic Tuohy above.

Babu Frik, the tiny, snarky droidsmith that delights in wiping C-3Po’s memory in “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,” has become an instant fan favorite. One wonders how long it will take Disney + to produce his own standalone series. “Babu is our Yoda,” said Neal Scanlan, the creature effects supervisor, who oversaw the nine-inch rod puppet in the spirit of “Star Wars” as a retro, tactile figure.
“Frank Oz and The Muppets were very prevalent back in the old days, and it’s a piece of theater,” added Scanlan, who oversaw more than 500 practical creatures in “Skywalker,” including a fully functional animatronic mask for Maz Kanata (previously CG), driven in real-time by Lupita Nyong’o in a mo-cap suit. That’s because the practical version worked better for the interaction with General Leia Organa (the late Carrie Fisher), which utilized leftover footage from “The Force Awakens,” with everything digitally...

Disney dominated the 18th annual Ves Awards with five nominations apiece for Jon Favreau’s frontrunner “The Lion King” and Robert Rodriguez’s surprising “Alita: Battle Angel” (acquired from Fox). Joining them for the top photo-real prize were the Disney-led “Avengers: Endgame” and “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,” along with Ang Lee’s “Gemini Man”. The Ves Awards will be held January 29th at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
Competing for supporting VFX were Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman”, Sam Mendes’ “1917,” (which stitched together the World War I thriller as one continuous shot and offered various enhancements), James Mangold’s “Ford v Ferrari,” Todd Phillips’ “Joker,” and “The Aeronauts.”
In animation, Disney also fared well, with Pixar’s “Toy Story 4” (which grabbed five nominations) and “Frozen 2.” They were joined by Golden Globe nominee “Missing Link” from Laika, surprise nominee “Klaus” (the innovative 2D feature from Netflix and Spanish director Sergio Pablos), and,...

Call it the J.J. Effect. Animatronics — along with similar techniques like puppetry, makeup effects and miniatures — is making a comeback.
The work was long responsible for some of the most iconic characters and scenes in cinema history, then shunted aside in the 1990s as CGI became cheaper and delivered ever more realistic results. But J.J. Abrams, a director who’d grown up in the effects heyday of the ’70s and ’80s, followed his love of those arts and the cinematic language of “Star Wars” when he included a wide range of animatronics in 2015’s “The Force Awakens.” Now, Hollywood is rediscovering its love of puppets controlled by motors, gears and cables, whether via the expansion of the “Star Wars” universe or in movies like Netflix’s “Dark Crystal” reboot, “Age of Resistance.”
Film fans of a certain age (which include many of today’s directors) never fell out of love with so-called practical effects.

One way we know that we are inching ever closer to the release of Star Wars: Episode IX is that concept designer Jake Lunt Davies has finished work on the picture. He has worked on all five of the Disney era Star Wars films, and as his contract ended he took a moment to reflect on the creatures he has created and the people he has worked with. He posted the following collage of his creations on Instagram, along with a sweet note thanking the people who build his designs and the directors he worked with, plus the inimitable Kathleen Kennedy, the executive who keeps it all running.
So this week my contract ended on Star Wars EpIX....which kind of means after 5 years and 5 movies, I've finally finished on Star Wars. As a kid this was my childhood ambition and I still can't believe that I've now actually had...

J.J. Abrams and co-writer Chris Terrio currently face two big questions as they approach production on Star Wars: Episode IX.
For starters, how do they go about closing out Lucasfilm’s Skywalker Saga in a way that satisfies as much as it thrills? And perhaps most important of all: what do they do with the character of Luke, who met his end in the climax of The Last Jedi?
It’s no secret that Mark Hamill’s Jedi Master took his last breath soon after his Force projection deceived Kylo Ren on the salt plains of Crait, but the ambiguous nature of his ‘death’ has led many to believe that the galaxy’s most famous farm boy will be making a return come 2019 – Force ghost or not. After all, they can’t really close out the current trilogy without him, right?

Star Wars: Episode IX will begin filming at London’s Pinewood Studios on August 1, 2018. J.J. Abrams returns to direct the final installment of the Skywalker saga. Abrams co-wrote the screenplay with Chris Terrio.
Returning cast members include Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo, and Billie Lourd. Joining the cast of Episode IX are Naomi Ackie and Richard E. Grant, who will be joined by veteran Star Wars actors Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, and Billy Dee Williams, who will reprise his role as Lando Calrissian.
The role of Leia Organa will once again be played by Carrie Fisher, using previously unreleased footage shot for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. “We desperately loved Carrie Fisher,” says Abrams. “Finding a truly satisfying conclusion to the Skywalker saga without her eluded us. We were never going to recast, or use a CG character.

For his dino out of jungle sequel, “Fallen Kingdom,” director J. A. Bayona (“A Monster Calls”) channeled classic horror in collaboration with Industrial Light & Magic, especially during the final battle in a Gothic mansion between Blue, the heroic Velociraptor, and the new weaponized monster hybrid, the Indoraptor.
“If you think about kids playing with dinosaurs, most of the time they play in their bedrooms, so it was like a fantasy of a kid becoming a reality,” Bayona said. “And there is this shot of the Indoraptor over Maisie’s [Isabella Sermon] bed and he’s extending his claw. I got that from ‘Nosferatu.'”
And, like the Frankenstein monster, the Indoraptor (Indominus Rex crossed with Velociraptor) served as a prototype gone wrong: a rejected creature worthy of some sympathy. “It’s not about accepting dinosaurs anymore, it’s about accepting ourselves,” added Bayona. “The dinosaur situation has become global. The 90th Academy Awards has concluded and I think a lot of movie geeks are happy with the way things played out! I couldn't be more excited to see Guillermo del Toro win Best Director and his film The Shape of Water win Best Picture of the year!
We also saw Gary Oldman win Best Actor, which he definitely deserved! Frances McDormand, took home the Best Actress Award and Sam Rockwell won for Best Supporting Actor for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Then there was Jordan Peele, who won Best Original Screenplay for Get Out, which so freakin' cool!
Personally, the one film that I didn't think should have won was Call Me By Your Name for Best Adapted Screenplay. Molly's Game, Logan, Mudbound, and The Disaster Artist were all better films with better scripts!
Below you'll find a full list of the nominees with the winners bolded. Are you happy with the winners?...

At the Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards on Feb. 24, Oscar frontrunner “Darkest Hour” won two of its three races: special makeup effects and best period/character makeup. It lost best period/character hairstyling to “I, Tonya.”
Among those films that “Darkest Hour” edged out for best special makeup effects was “Wonder,” one of its two Oscar rivals for Best Makeup & Hairstyling. That film contended on the contemporary side here and lost its bid for hairstyling to “Pitch Perfect 3″ and makeup to “Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2.” The third Oscar nominee, “Victoria and Abdul,” was snubbed by the guild.

Lucasfilm donated 2 screen-used First Order Stormtrooper helmets -- one from 'The Force Awakens' signed by director J.J. Abrams and company president Kathleen Kennedy ... and the other from 'The Last Jedi' signed by director Rian Johnson -- to raise the money.

Once again, the Academy’s Visual Effects Branch will decide the five Oscar nominees at a Saturday “bakeoff,” a selection of footage from the shortlisted films, which are dominated by particularly great character work. Three spots likely await “War for the Planet of the Apes,” “Blade Runner 2049,” and “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.”
However, that leaves a battle for the final two nominations among “Dunkirk” (the lone invisible-vfx entry), “The Shape of Water,” “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” “Kong: Skull Island,” “Alien: Covenant,” and surprise entries “Okja” and “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets.” The smart money’s on Christopher Nolan’s “Dunkirk” and Guillermo del Toro’s “The Shape of Water,” but don’t be surprised if Bong Joon-ho’s underdog, “Okja,” knocks one of them out.
