Piper Laurie, who blossomed as an actress only after extricating herself from the studio system and went on to rack up three Oscar nominations, has died. She was 91.
Laurie’s manager Marion Rosenberg confirmed the news to Variety, writing, “A beautiful human being and one of the great talents of our time.”
Laurie scored her first Oscar nomination for her work opposite Paul Newman in 1961’s classic poolhall drama “The Hustler,” in which she played an alcoholic who memorably tells Newman’s character, “Look, I’ve got troubles and I think maybe you’ve got troubles. Maybe it’d be better if we just leave each other alone.”
Though she informally retired to raise a family for more than a decade, she returned to film and television in the mid-’70s and racked up an impressive roster of characterizations, including Oscar-nominated turns in “Carrie” and in “Children of a Lesser God,...

Video: Will Ferrell Better Be Bringing More Cowbell to the SNL 40th
From original castmember Laraine Newman to the show's fearless leader in the '90s, Will Ferrell, everyone had plenty to say about their time as a not ready for primetime player.
"That experience -- the seven years I was on the show -- will be the hardest slash most fun thing I've ever done," Ferrell said.
"Getting up to air live and getting it done was kind of a work of art in itself," Nora Dunn said.

If Fox News ever enters the original movie game, I’ve got the perfect premise for its first film: Sarah Palin and Free Speech: A Love Story.
The former Alaska governor just can’t stop bringing up her favorite constitutional amendment — especially when complaining about all the folks using their right to free speech to criticize conservatives for exercising their right to free speech. Or something. (She uses “free speech” and “First Amendment rights” pretty interchangeably, so I’m going to as well. That’s my right as an American.)

Whether Randy Rainbow is flirting on the phone with his new boyfriend Mel Gibson or taking advice from the uber-professional Dr. Laura Schlessinger, the New York-based YouTube star is routinely hilarious, cheeky, and provocative. The British Academy of Film and Television Arts has announced its slate of television nominees for the 2011 awards ceremony. The categories are almost wholly British shows, but the awards do have an International category.
This year, "Mad Men," "Glee" and "Boardwalk Empire" from the United States are represented, alongside "The Killing" - but not the U.S. version, the original program from Denmark. "Mad Men" has won this BAFTA award the past two years, but will "Boardwalk Empire" usurp the AMC drama, as it did at the Golden Globes this year?
The 2011 BAFTAs take place Sunday, May 22. View the full list of nominees here. We wonder who the U.S. shows will send as representatives for the awards? Last year, "Glee's" Jane Lynch and her partner Dr. Laura Embry were in attendance.

If you’re like me and think boney models are unattractive and terrible body role model for women, then you’re in for a supersize surprise
An astounding new study out of the University of Bologna claims that “chubby models” will increase obesity — already a far more prevalent problem here in America than other eating disorders. In other words, fat models are a worse problem than sub zero size models!
Dr. Davide Dagone and Dr. Laura Savorelli, who authored the study, write that “given that in the U.S. and Europe, people are on average overweight, we conclude (that using larger models) may foster the obesity epidemic.”
They have a point. Statistics in the U.S. reveal that about two -thirds of American adults are overweight!
There has been a Huge increase in obesity-related medical problems including diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular disease, in recent decades.

The veins, tested in large animals, could someday be used in humans in need of heart surgery and dialysis.
Scientists have made bioengineered veins that might someday be used in vascular surgeries in humans. In a study published in Science Translational Medicine, a group of scientists from Duke, Yale, and East Carolina Universities demonstrated the effectiveness of the veins, which were generated by culturing human cells in a bioreactor to form tissue. The veins would be available for surgeries "off the shelf" and at the moment a patient needs them, and are less likely to become infected or clotted, according to a press release. The research was funded and partially conducted by Humacyte, a regenerative medicine company that works to engineer human tissues.
One application for the new veins could be in coronary bypass surgery. "This new type of bioengineered vein allows them to be easily stored in hospitals so...

Quite a few people (including, full disclosure, this writer) have taken umbrage with Dr. Laura Schlessinger's recent media blitz in which she decries the outcry over her little "Saying the N-Word 11 Times While Screaming at a Black Caller on Her Radio Show" incident. Add to that group Anderson Cooper. In addition to being annoyed that Dr. Laura's attempting to "play the victim card," Cooper was especially angry that the woman's decided to drag CNN's name into the mess.

Among her talents, Dr. Laura Schlessinger has the unique gift of inartfulness. It’s a word she herself used during this morning’s Today interview with Matt Lauer to describe the infamous use of the racially charged n-word on her radio show that led to her move to Sirius Xm. Schlessinger discusses the incident in her new book, Surviving a Shark Attack (on Land), explaining that left-wing hysterics hijacked the narrative of that incident, and she told Lauer that her actual “point was well made, but it was inartfully made.”
I was inclined to actually agree with her to a certain extent.

Hard to believe -- for anyone not named Dr. Laura -- that this is still an issue in 2011. At least in this case it's a bit more nuanced. One publisher of Mark Twain's classic "Huckleberry Finn," New South Books, said this week it plans to remove the n-word from new editions of the Mark Twain classic, replacing it with “slave.” New South also plans to replace the word “Injun,” a derogatory term for Native Americans. "This is not an effort to render Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn colorblind," Twain scholar Alan Gribben...

Today is the first day of the rest of your life.
After seemingly endless announcements and preparation, Oprah Winfrey kicks of 2011 with the launch of The Oprah Winfrey Network.
And as the king-making media empress tries to clarify in her introductory hour, "Oprah's Guide to Own," she is not here to waste your time. She wants her new block of original programming to serve a purpose in your life.
Being Oprah, she's going to get a lot of this right. But so far, there are a few docu-series that seem like they could be a tad misguided -- in the inadvertently hilarious way.
Shows like "In the Bedroom with Dr. Laura Berman," a cartoonishly awkward sex rehab program for middle-aged couples. We haven't seen an episode, per se, but if Oprah's extended preview is telling, it could become required viewing.
"He hasn't touched my genitals in a year," says one woman.

I’ve been curious about Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s Broadway production of The Book of Mormon. Vogue calls it “hands down, the filthiest, most offensive, and—surprise—sweetest thing you’ll see on Broadway this year, and quite possibly the funniest musical ever.”
I really don’t know what to say about the Skinimax-style video for Enrique Inglesias’ “Tonight.” Boobs, lesbian sex, bondage, but somehow almost no beefcake. The video is definitely Nsfw.
Good news about the upcoming Muppet movie: Michael Cera is not playing Walter, the new Muppet. Lady Gaga...

Adele Starr, gay rights activist and the first National President of Pflag has passed away at the age of 90. When you read the number of arguments and quotes for equality that are credited to Starr, we should all be flying our rainbow flags at half masts. We’ve lost a hero and a trailblazer.
Evidently, there’s a bidding war to be the brand of soda that sits in front of Simon Cowell when he launches The X Factor USA next year. Coca-Cola traditionally adorned the desk on American Idol, and the soft drink got in at bargain basement prices on the unknown format. But Cowell is said to be favoring Pepsi as a way to break from Idol.

You know how some of you were saying in the comments that you couldn't tell if I liked Glee or not sometimes? Yeah. You're not gonna have that problem in this recap. They had me the first time they mentioned "The Island of Misfit Toys."
The teachers at McKinley are exchanging Secret Santa gifts, powered by Coach Bieste. Will, after enduring a "let's be friends" chat with Emma, draws Sue's name.
Brittany is decorating her locker for Christmas while Artie helps. "Last year I left my stocking up over Christmas vacation, and an entire family of mice started living in it," she tells him as she hangs an ornament. "Their Christmas gift to each other was rabies."
Artie, it turns out, wants just one thing for Christmas: For his parents to stop friend requesting him on Facebook.
"What are you asking Santa for?" Brittany asks him.
Artie is all, huh?...

Joey Fatone wants to be on Glee as a teacher, and he thinks NSync’s music should be featured. I’m not against a boy band episode in concept, but if Joey gets to come on, I want Lance Bass, maybe as a judge for regionals. Glee needs more openly gay actors: In for a gay, in for a gaygle.
Hungary has enshrined marriage as only between a man and a woman in their constitution. It may be pointless, because the EU says that all member countries must recognize all personal legal documents of all other EU countries, including birth certificates, death certificates, and marriage certificates. So Hungary gays can just cross the border to a more equality-driven country and boom! Married.
I sometimes don’t get Ted Casablanca. He just tries to make something out of nothing, in this case acting like Ricky Martin spending time at a party with a woman meant something.

Now there's going to be two big mouths over at Sirius Xm. Dr. Laura Schlessinger joins nemesis Howard Stern on the satellite radio network, landing a new syndicated show of her own set to launch in January. It's a quick rebound following her N-bomb dropping rant this summer that earned her a racist tag and prompted her announcement that she was leaving broadcasting. Alas, she's not going quietly. So what does she plan on yakking about on her new gig? Dr. Laura, who will end her current radio show on Dec. 31, was wooed by Sirius Xm following the August incident. She will transition to satellite on Jan. 3, with a three-hour weekday show at 2 p.m. "The first and most important...

Dr. Laura “N-Bomb” Schlessinger isn’t satisfied to quit while she’s only slightly behind. The controversial right-wing advice guru ran into a lot of trouble back in August when she used the N-word no fewer than 11 times while talking on air to an African-American woman, a move which prompted floods of criticism and resulted in Schlessinger “deciding” not to renew her contract after it expires at the end of the year.
Instead, she’s moving a couple of doors down to Sirius Xm Radio, where apparently they don’t care how much hate speech she spouts, or how many centuries ago her advice might have been relevant. This is very likely the beginning of the end for her career, as she seeks more marginalized environments where she can say whatever crazy nonsense pops into her mouthy little head.

Leslie Nielsen was one of the greatest comedic actors of all time to me. So I’m terribly sad to say that he’s passed away at age 84. My favorite Nielsen quotable? “Nice beaver.” Reply: “Thanks, I just had it stuffed.”
New Delhi held their first pride march since the decriminalization of homosexuality. That changes everything. Instead of a protest march, it was a celebration for the 2,000 marchers.
Airlock Alpha has an interesting piece on what moves SyFy may have to make since they canceled Caprica, wiping out a chunk of their gay characters. Syfy was somewhat of a success story with GLAAD’s Network Responsibility Index, because they vowed to do better, and actually made an effort. But many of the pilots and shows fell victim to low viewership and cancellation. Will they rebuild?

Dr. Laura Schlessinger is headed to satellite radio. Schlessinger announced she was quitting her syndicated radio program shortly after being widely criticized for using the N word 11 times during a brief conversation with an on-air caller; Celebrities on Twitter and other social media web sites will take a day off to raise money for charity. Talk show host Laura Schlessinger has signed a multi-year deal with Sirius Xm Radio, the Associated Press reports.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Schlessinger's syndicated advice program, Dr. Laura, will end on traditional radio Dec. 31. She begins at Sirius the following Monday.
Schlessinger found herself in hot water when she used the N-word on her show while speaking to a black female caller. Days after the controversy, she said she would quit her program.

Dr. Laura Stachel was working in maternity health clinics in Africa and she saw a problem. Actually, she couldn’t see, and that was the problem. Many clinics in remote areas can’t keep the lights on. "The first hospital I went to in Nigeria had grid electricity, but it was only available at best 12 hours a day and often much less," Stachel tells Fast Company. "The last time I was there in June they only had two hours a day."
That’s bad news for patients needing emergency surgery in the middle of the night. If the power is out then doctors will either not operate until the lights come back or the sun comes up. If they have to proceed, it is often by the dim flicker of a candle or a kerosene lamp. Even locating a doctor by foot instead of walkie-talkie could mean a four-hour wait...

Brothers & Sisters has always bordered on melodramatic, even in its heyday, and this season has been particularly uneven, thanks to the mismanaged time jump and other factors.
"Call Mom" seemed to channel the things we used to love about the show, though, and marked the first time in the fifth season that we felt things were really firing on all cylinders.
Perhaps not coincidentally, Holly did not appear this week. No disrespect to Patricia Wettig, but her story line is difficult to take seriously. Removing it for a week was a good thing.
Nora is the focal point of the episode, and Sally Field shined as usual ... if not more than usual. It was great watching her battle with Dr. Alexandra Kirby (Dr. Laura?) for the job.
You knew from the way she was being needled and shot down at every turn that eventually, Nora would rise up and lay the smack down.

Politically incorrect statements made by media personnel in the U.S. might lead to firings or early retirements, but that's nothing compared to the full-on "diplomatic incident" brought on by a New Zealand broadcaster's inappropriate snickering recently.
Paul Henry, a newscaster with Tvnz in New Zealand, couldn't help making some rather obvious jokes about New Delhi's chief minister. Her name: Sheila Dikshit.
For the record, it's pronounced "Dixit."
But even after the news anchor is provided the correct pronunciation, he laughs uncontrollably while his co-anchor shakes her head.
While Tvnz has suspended Henry, the damage has already been done. Folks in New Zealand who saw the TV broadcast complained, as did Indian officials, and the New Zealand government has apologized to the Indian Government. There was even talk of trade negotiations being impeded because of the anchorman's slight against Dikshit.

He has been on only for a week, but MSNBC's newest host Lawrence O'Donnell is already channeling Rick Sanchez and Dr. Laura Schlessinger by apologizing for insensitive remarks directed at a minority.
In O'Donnell's case, it was a show this week where he invoked the imagery of slavery while introducing Michael Steele, the African-American head of the Republican National Committee. O'Donnell apologized for his indiscretion on Wednesday's show.
"Michael Steele is dancing as fast as he can," O'Donnell began his Steele intro, "trying to charm independent voters and Tea Partiers while never losing sight of his real master and paycheck provider, the Republican National Committee."
He made the remarks before showing a taped interview with Steele, so the interviewee didn't hear it until viewing the TV show later. Steele called O'Donnell to complain, and O'Donnell played the voice message on Wednesday's show.

Commentator Christopher Hitchens on Monday called for the reinstatement of fired former CNN on-air personality Rick Sanchez and called on Jon Stewart and others to join him in doing so.
He also compared it to the recent resignation of Dr. Laura Schlessinger for using the N-word.
In a Slate column, he argued: "The best way to demonstrate the hidden influence of the chosen people would be for Jon Stewart and others to join me in calling for Rick Sanchez's reinstatement. If it then didn't happen, it would help us understand who really pulls the strings around here."
CNN fired Sanchez on Friday after he said in a Sirius Xm satellite radio interview that "everybody who runs CNN is a lot like Stewart, and a lot of people who run all the other networks are a lot like Stewart, and to imply that somehow they - the people in this...

Martha Plimpton
A: Martha Plimpton may not be well-known enough to be a full-fledged gay icon, but I think she’s definitely well on her way to icon-hood.
Why? I’d like to be able to say that it’s solely about her Cher-like career longevity and impressive talent, which has recently resulted in three consecutive Tony Award nominations, not to mention stunning TV character work on shows like Fringe and, yes, Raising Hope.
But let’s face...

Q: Hey Arnold, the popular 1990s TV show on Nickelodeon, is known for subtly touching on issues which most, if not all, other children's shows wouldn't touch. For example, one of the character's moms was obviously an alcoholic, and the kids' fourth-grade teacher was gay (this was confirmed by the guy who made the show, Craig Bartlett). Are there any other children's shows with gay characters, whose gayness has been officially confirmed? -- Selina, Suny Oneonta
A: You’re right that creator Craig Barlett did confirm, after-the-fact, that Robert Simmons, Arnold’s second fourth grade teacher (voiced by Frasier’s Dan Butler, an out actor), was gay.

Igniting a massive race debate, Dr. Laura Schlessinger recently used the N-word multiple times on-air in her advice to an African-American caller. The radio host quit her show soon after, citing freedom-of-speech issues.
The thing that most surprises Wanda Sykes about the Dr. Laura controversy is that any African Americans were even listening. "That's a white people thing," she said on 'Larry King Live' (weeknights, 9Pm Et on CNN). "Dr. Laura is not even a psychologist, she's not a psychiatrist ... Well, this particular controversy just might never end. Once again, we return to the issue of Dr. Laura Schlessinger, and her use of the "N-word." But now, we're adding Sarah Palin to the mix.
In case you have forgotten or haven't been paying attention: Dr. Laura used the "N-word" 11 times in a row while on her radio program. After the firestorm of controversy that resulted from this, Dr. Laura quit her show. Next, Sarah Palin instantly jumped to Laura's defense, claiming that Schlessinger's First Amendment rights were violated. Specifically, Palin said that Laura had lost her right to freedom of speech. ... Now, on 'The Daily Show' (weeknights, 11Pm Et on Comedy Central), Jon Stewart and his correspondents jump into attack mode -- and call Sarah Palin a hypocrite.
