J.K. Simmons has joined the cast of Jason Reitman’s SNL 1975, and not only will the Oscar winner be playing Hollywood legend Milton Berle, but he’ll have the notable distinction of becoming the first actual SNL host to join the cast of the Sony movie.
Simmons hosted the Jan. 31, 2015 episode of Saturday Night Live, which featured D’Angelo as the musical guest. At the time, Simmons was riding high off an Oscar nomination for Whiplash, and he would go on to win the Academy Award following his SNL hosting stint.
Meanwhile, Berle hosted SNL on April 14, 1979, and Ornette Coleman was his musical guest. It’s unclear where Berle fits into Reitman’s movie at this moment in time.

HBO has ordered a half-hour pilot episode starring, written and executive produced by Rachel Sennott (“Bottoms”).
The untitled comedy project’s logline promises “a codependent friend group reunion,” in which the friends “navigate how their time apart, goals and new relationships have changed them,” TheWrap has learned.
“Barry” alums Emma Barrie and Aida Rodgers will executive produce alongside the “Bodies Bodies Bodies” and “Shiva Baby” star.
Sennott most recently starred as Pj, platonic other half to Ayo Edebiri’s Josie, in “Bottoms,” which she cowrote with director Emma Seligman. Seligman also directed Sennott in “Shiva Baby.”
Sennott also appeared alongside Lily-Rose Depp and The Weeknd in HBO’s “The Idol” as Leia. She starred as Alice in the A24 thriller-comedy, “Bodies Bodies Bodies.”
A graduate from NYU Tisch with a focus in acting, Sennott’s breakthrough performance came from Seligman’s “Shiva Baby,” originally a student film that was adapted into a full-length feature.

Exclusive: HBO is betting on another fresh female comedy voice, giving a pilot order to a half-hour starring, written and executive produced by Rachel Sennott.
In the untitled project, a codependent friend group reunites, navigating how the time apart, ambition and new relationships have changed them.
Sennott, who is executive producing alongside Barry alums Emma Barrie and Aida Rodgers, is looking to follow in the footsteps of Lena Dunham (Girls) and Issa Rae’s (Insecure), two other rising female comedy creators/performers whose pilots about twentysomethings navigating life and relationships became hit HBO series.
A 2017 alumna of Tisch School of the Arts, Sennott got off to a hot start, when a student film she starred in, Shiva Baby, got a feature adaptation with her reprising her starring role and executive producing. That led to starring roles in the comedy horror movie Bodies, Bodies, Bodies and teen comedy Bottoms,...

The 2007 John C. Reilly comedy Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story has become a cult hit in recent years, largely as a result of the skill with which it dissects and eviscerates the genre it satirizes.
The film so deftly laid bare the tropes and cliches of the rock star biopic that many predicted it would forever change the way filmmakers approached stories about dead celebs.
And for a while, it seemed like the trick had worked.
Leaving aside for a moment any discussion about the quality of these films, there's no denying that Elvis, Blonde, Maestro, Jackie, Priscilla, and Oppenheimer all offered new takes on a very familiar subgenre.
(That last one, admittedly, is a bit of an outlier, as we're not sure if a theoretical physicist -- even one who altered the course of world history -- can properly be called a celebrity.)
But in recent years, the...

Jason Reitman is staying mighty busy these days. Less than 24 hours after the release of the latest trailer for "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire," four major casting announcements were made for his next project, "SNL 1975." The film will attempt to tell the true story of what went on behind the scenes before the broadcast premiere of "Saturday Night Live" on NBC, highlighting the real-time bedlam with some of the most legendary names in American comedy. Reitman co-wrote the script with his "Ghostbusters" collaborator Gil Kenan and is basing the story on the firsthand accounts of those who were there. Lest we forget, Reitman's father is the legendary Ivan Reitman, so these comedy titans were the friends and colleagues of the family. If anyone can get serious insight, it's Reitman.

While they've been focused on their Ghostbusters films of late, with the newest, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire less than two months away now, Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan have also been putting the pieces together for something that draws on no little amount of nostalgia (not to mention a connection to Dan Aykroyd): SNL 1975, about the fraught first night of Saturday Night Live. The duo (with Reitman directing and Kenan writing) have built the cast and are now adding Lamorne Morris, Dylan O’Brien, Cory Michael Smith and Matt Wood to the line-up.

Saturday Night Live will celebrate its 50th anniversary next year, which will also mark the 49th anniversary of the first person to complain that the show isn’t as funny as it used to be. Jason Reitman is set to helm a Saturday Night Live movie about the broadcast of the very first show, and Deadline reports that the project has found its Lorne Michaels.
Gabriel Labelle, who broke out as the star of Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans, is set to play Lorne Michaels in the Saturday Night Live movie. With the exception of a five-year period in the 1980s, Michaels has produced the show since its inception and will continue to do so until he (possibly) turns the reigns over to Tina Fey. Cooper Hoffman (Licorice Pizza) has also signed on to play NBC producer Dick Ebersol in the movie, with Rachel Sennot (Shiva Baby) playing SNL writer Rosie Shuster.

The late night sketch comedy series "Saturday Night Live" is still going strong. The series is currently in the middle of its 49th season, and word on the street is that there's quite the celebration around the corner for the show's 50th anniversary, which will come around this fall. There have been rumblings that series creator and longtime executive producer Lorne Michaels may step down from his post at "SNL" when the 50th season is over, but there hasn't been any confirmation just yet, even though Tina Fey seems to be primed to take the gig if that happens. However, there's another big "SNL" event coming soon too, in the form of a movie about the show's premiere on October 11, 1975.
Last spring, Sony Pictures set director Jason Reitman to direct "SNL 1975," a movie that will chronicle the real-time, behind-the-scenes chaos and miraculous magic leading right up to the show's debut on NBC.

Justin Timberlake will return to “Saturday Night Live” in the wake of backlash following ex-girlfriend Britney Spears’ shocking memoir “The Woman in Me.”
In the memoir, Spears alleged Timberlake encouraged her to have an abortion, among other revelations about their relationship. Spears also recounted a cringe encounter between Timberlake and Ginuwine; the audiobook narration of the exchange went viral thanks to Oscar winner Michelle Williams’ accent impersonating Timberlake. (Smart money is on Timberlake appearing in a sketch about this in some form.)
The Emmy and Grammy-winning musician will appear in the January 27 episode of “Saturday Night Live” with Dakota Johnson hosting. Johnson will be promoting her upcoming superhero film “Madame Web.”
In 2023, Timberlake reunited with *Nsync band members for animated film “Trolls Band Together.” Timberlake also recently appeared in Benicio Del Toro’s “Reptile.”
The “Social Network” star will take the “SNL” stage for his fifth solo musical guest appearance.

Reitman is directing the film for Sony Pictures about the debut night in October 1975 of the NBC sketch show that is currently airing its 49th season. Labelle, who had a breakout role in Steven Spielberg’s 2022 semi-autobiographical drama The Fabelmans, is set to play SNL creator Lorne Michaels.
Hoffman (Licorice Pizza) is attached as former NBC executive Dick Ebersol, while Sennott (Bottoms) will play Michaels’ ex-wife Rosie Shuster.

Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson resurrected the original Ghostbusters last night for appearances on two NBC late-night programs, promoting the upcoming sequel Ghostbusters: Afterlife on both The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and Late Night with Seth Meyers.
Highlight of the appearances: Aykroyd doing his signature Blues Brothers dance to a beat provided by drummer Nate Smith, and to the clear delight of his old pal Murray.
Murray goaded Aykroyd into showing off his eccentric steps, then fondly recalled the first time he ever witnessed such moves: Aykroyd had started dating Saturday Night Live writer Rosie Shuster, Murray recalled, and the young couple, both from Canada, wore such heavy boots that they couldn’t control their feet.
“The two worst dancers I’d ever seen in my life,” Murray jokes. Even after all these years, Murray’s delight in watching Aykroyd’s moves is apparent once the dancing starts.

With the year’s end “light at the end of the tunnel” in sight, 2018’s parade of distinguished feature documentaries marches on with another “crowd-pleaser” bringing up the rear. Cinemas have been host to truly exceptional works of non-fiction filmmaking. This week’s release joins the impressive list of the “celebrity showbiz profile” sub-genre that includes the box office hit Won’T You Be My Neighbor along with Whitney, McQueen, and Quincy. Though music doesn’t play as big a role in this subject’s life as in several of these films, she made her greatest cultural impact on television, just as Neighbor’s Fred Rogers. Oh, and her works were much more “adult” in nature, While Rogers was a daytime TV king to countless kids, she was the first real “queen of late-night TV comedy”. And while she’s been gone for nearly three decades, her influence seems to be felt now,...

It’s no easy task to find a fresh way to approach a familiar face like comedian Gilda Radner, but director Lisa D’Apolito does a wonderful job ushering us through the highs and lows of the beloved icon’s life in her documentary “Love, Gilda.”
D’Apolito worked directly with Radner’s estate, and was lucky to have access to a trove of personal information. Despite the fact that this is her first feature film, she uses her archival sources with uncommon dexterity.
Home movies introduce us to a little girl who’s always mugging for the camera, a trait that continues into and after high school and college. We travel with Radner while she moves to Toronto, makes her debut in “Godspell,” and dates an equally mischievous Martin Short.

In this trailer for Love, Gilda, an awed Amy Poehler, Bill Hader and Melissa McCarthy hold Gilda Radner’s handwritten letters as if they’re treasures that could turn to dust with the slightest breeze. “I can’t believe this is her handwriting,” says Poehler.
Directed by Lisa D’Apolito, the documentary, which debuted at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival, chronicles the beloved Saturday Night Live cast member – one of the original Not Ready For Prime Times Players – and was put together with the blessing of the Radner estate, which provided D’Apolito a collection of diaries, personal audio and videotapes documenting Radner’s childhood, her comedy career, her relationships and ultimately, her struggles with cancer. The never-before-seen-or-heard footage and journal entries form the narrative spine of the documentary, allowing Gilda to tell her own story.

Saturday Night Live, “George Carlin/Billy Preston, Janis Ian”
Written by Lorne Michaels, Michael O’Donoghue, Anne Beatts, Tom Davis, Al Franken, Marilyn Suzanne Miller, Herb Sargent, Tom Schiller, Rosie Schuster, Alan Zweibel
Directed by Dave Wilson
Aired on October 11, 1975 on NBC
Possibly (and very arguably) the most influential television show of all time, Saturday Night Live (SNL for short) is American comedy (albeit with a bit of Canadian help) exemplified: irreverent, absurdist, made for short attention spans, and continually being both panned and lauded by critics. Whether you still lock your door in fear of Land Shark, turned the show off in 1980 and never looked back, or are in need more cowbell, you know the magic that is SNL. Like a boy band or Santa Claus, we each have our favorites and picture a certain cast as the “real” SNL. For example, there are people who swear by the...

Judging from the steady flow of acceptance speech tears, receiving a star on Canada's Walk of Fame is an emotional day for many Canadians. It was especially hard for Paul Hartmann, brother of the late Canadian actor-comedian Phil Hartman.
On Saturday afternoon, Paul was accepting the national honour on behalf of Phil (who dropped the extra "n" for his stage name). During a ceremony held at Toronto's Ed Mirvish Theatre, the beloved Ontario-born comedian and former "Saturday Night Live" and "The Simpsons" star was presented with the Cineplex Legends Award, a posthumous honour that in previous years has gone to other notable Canadian luminaries such as Mordecai Richler and Raymond Burr.
Part of a four-day festival, the annual Walk of Fame inductions honour Canadian achievement in a variety of fields, in a star-studded celebration of the country's best and brightest. And this year, Hartman -- who died tragically in 1998 --...
