Ian McKellen plays the title role in Hamlet, and his stage performance is going to be beamed to cinemas.
Ian McKellen is no stranger to a Shakespeare soliloquy. Having played in every one of his plays many times over, from the towering titan King Lear to the Scottish Play and Richard III.
Now, he is bringing Hamlet, often cited as one of the all time great parts for an actor, to the big screen for one night only.
The synopsis reads as follows:
A tale of revenge that has stood the test of time, William Shakespeare’s classic tragedy is reimagined for the modern day as a gripping psychological thriller! Transcending the confines of the stage in a uniquely modern spin, the film utilises nearly every room of the Theatre Royal Windsor to transform it into the immortal Elsinore Castle, from basement dungeon to roof-top battlement. Ahead of Horror Channel’s UK TV Premiere of Peripheral, director Paul Hyett talks about directorial ambitions, twisted technology, and why aliens aren’t interested in us.
How did you become attached to Peripheral?
The producer Craig Touhy and I had been friends for a while and we’d nearly done another movie together. He’d liked the claustrophobia and tension of The Seasoning House so we met up to discuss Peripheral. When he pitched it to me, very much a low budget, contained movie, in one apartment. I must say I was a little hesitant. I wanted to broaden my directing and do bigger scope. Craig persuaded me to at least read it. I did and loved the script. The story, the character of Bobbi, of this writer blocked, being forced to adjust to what is wanted of her, and having to succumb to a technology that ultimately fucks...

The story of three women who embark on a European train-ride tour in honor of their dearly departed friend, “Off the Rails” is inevitably colored by the 2020 death of Kelly Preston, who delivers her final screen performance as a member of this sorrowful trio. Such sentimental circumstances, however, can’t overshadow the creakiness of Jules Williamson’s film, which despite its title Laughs, tears, healing and incessant Blondie songs are all part of its rickety package, none of which is likely to help it make inroads with audiences when it debuts in theaters and on VOD on Dec. 10.
A high tolerance for corniness and the sound of Debbie Harry’s voice are prerequisites for “Off the Rails,” whose tale swiftly reunites lonely Kate (Jenny Seagrove), motherly Liz (Sally Phillips) and discontent actress Cassie (Preston) for the funeral of their fourth musketeer, Anna. Following a service at which Anna’s mother (a cameoing Judi Dench) speaks,...

"Men never fail to let me down." Screen Media Films has debuted the official US trailer for an indie comedy titled Off the Rails, arriving in the US this December. It already opened first in the UK during the summer earlier in the year. Three fifty-something women set out to repeat their post-graduation trip across Europe adventures of their youth, after their close friend passes away leaving them rail tickets, and a final request: to take her teenage daughter with them. Oh this sounds like so much fun! Always amusing watching people try to make sense of European travel. This stars Kelly Preston, Jenny Seagrove, Sally Phillips, with newcomer Elizabeth Dormer-Phillips, as well as appearances by Ben Miller, Franco Nero, and Judi Dench. Featuring the music of Blondie! Of course. The place they're supposed to go is the Palma Cathedral on the island of Mallorca, to see "God's Disco Ball" a natural phenomenon.

Kelly Preston’s last performance is a formulaic film about three fiftysomething pals talk menopause and midlife crises on a Euro rail trip
“Featuring the music of Blondie” is how this aspiring “feelgood film of the summer” announces itself, though it’s not obvious why the band would license virtually all their major earworms to this peppy but entirely formulaic comedy-drama. Clearly, the producers are looking to rival the Mamma Mia! effect – though Off the Rails is not a true musical, with the characters themselves only occasionally breaking out a bit of Blondie on a limited basis as they embark on their Euro rail trip. But the net effect of Debbie Harry popping up at 10-second intervals on the soundtrack to top up levels of ironic sass is to highlight how that quality is in generally short supply in the script.

Jules Williamson's tale of resparked middle-aged friendship has surely been made with mums in mind, many of whom will feel a nostalgic glow at the thought of interrailing - and, sight unseen, it is also likely to hold plenty of attraction for mum and daughter cinema fans over the summer. They should be warned to dial down their expectations, particularly if they're hoping for a Mamma Mia! style singalong, as the Blondie music here, though plentiful and energetic, is chiefly used to overlay the action rather than providing an anchor within it.

An open letter spearheaded by Animal Defenders International (Adi) and signed by nearly 100 experts, academics, and other concerned parties including Brian Blessed, Jenny Seagrove, Alexei Sayle and Benjamin Zephaniah, is calling for advanced non-animal research methods to be prioritised to accelerate the discovery and use of effective vaccines and treatments for Covid-19.
Published ahead of the World Health Assembly on Monday 18 May, and directed at the World Health Organization, governments, funding bodies, and regulators, the letter states that “significant funding and precious time is being spent on animal research…. despite the known species differences which make the results from such data unreliable when translated to humans.”
The open letter can be viewed here.
Signatories include Dr Laura Leslie, a biomedical engineer at Aston University working on human airways models; respiratory medicines specialist Dr Aryan Tavakkoli; Professor Jon Heylings, Chairman and Owner of Dermal Technology Laboratory Ltd and Professor of Toxicology...

Starring Peter Riegert, Burt Lancaster, Peter Capaldi, Denis Lawson

Beginning with the aptly named That Sinking Feeling in 1979, the Scottish filmmaker Bill Forsyth has produced comedies whose bittersweet humor barely concealed the hurt. “Grin and bear it” was the director’s credo and the marquees tipped his hand – Being Human, Comfort and Joy – though That Sinking Feeling said it all.
Local Hero boasts Forsyth’s most head-scratching title but there’s no mistaking the predicament of the movie’s nominal leading man played by Peter Riegert. Known simply as Mac, he’s just another cog in a Kafkaesque corporate machine, the air-conditioned nightmare of Knox Oil and Gas where Medication Time music wafts through the halls and workers in glass cubicles converse via primitive sign language.

World-renowned conservationist Jane Goodall Ph.D., Dbe, Founder of the Jane Goodall Institute, and Un Messenger of Peace, has joined with animal protection charity Humane Society International to issue a heart-felt plea to the European Union not to overturn a ban passed last week at the Cites wildlife trade conference in Geneva that would end the capture of baby African elephants from the wild for export to zoos and circuses in China, the USA and elsewhere.
The ban was voted on and passed by the required 2/3 majority vote in Committee I of Cites largely because the EU was unable to vote due to a procedural issue (it had not yet filed its credentials). However a representative for the European Commission took to the floor to speak against the ban, and with its credentials now in order, the voting bloc of 28 looks set to oppose the decision in the plenary this week.

"Finish the book, Bobbi!" Amp International has unveiled a teaser trailer for a wickedly weird sci-fi horror thriller titled Peripheral, from director Paul Hyett. The film is about a young writer named Bobbi Johnson struggling to finish her second novel. She installs an artificial intelligence into her home to help her finish, but it takes over her mind and manipulates her work to suit its own nefarious ends. Hannah Arterton stars as Bobbi, along with a smaller cast including Tom Conti, Rosie Day, Jenny Seagrove, and Elliot James Langridge. I honestly don't even know what to make of this - there's so many weird things happening and so much funky imagery in this trailer it's hard to make sense of it. But I guess I will admit: I am curious about this. A little bit, perhaps? Have a look for yourself. Here's the first teaser trailer (+ poster) for Paul Hyett's Peripheral,...

This week, British Prime Minister Theresa May received a letter from 31 of Britain’s biggest stars urging her to introduce a UK ban on animal-fur imports.
Fur farming has been illegal in the UK since 2000, but since then Britain has imported over £650 million worth of fur from countries such as China and Poland, where animals are typically bred in appalling conditions on fur farms.
The stars signed the open letter to show their support for the #FurFreeBritain campaign run by a group of prominent animal charities – Humane Society International UK, the Rspca, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), Four Paws, Animal Aid, Brian May's Save Me Trust, Viva!, The Jane Goodall Institute UK, and Open Cages – and supported by social network Care2.

When we see World War 2 movies based on the British experience, normally we witness the events of the Blitz and see the hardship people went through. Another Mother’s Son takes us to Nazi occupied Jersey and the true story of a mother, and a Polish escaped prisoner of war.
Another Mother’s Son is the story of Louisa Gould (Jenny Seagrove), who when called upon to hide a Russia prisoner of war who has escaped, agrees to let him into her house. Calling him Bill (Julian Kostov) she looks after him, and tries to give him some normality back into his life, while all the time hiding him from not only the enemy in uniform, but also those closer to home.

You never heard of the Great Glasgow Ice Cream Wars? They weren’t exactly Armageddon, and the gentle director Bill Forsyth makes a radio personality’s involvement with two competing ice cream companies more of a plunge into amiable drollery. If you like Gregory’s Girl and Local Hero you’ll understand the odd, unhurried attitude of this oddball show from 1984.

Jenny Seagrove excels in this true-life tale of a mother who hides a fugitive Russian in the Channel Islands during the second world war
At first, there is a bit of a familiar taste to this true-life wartime tale. But it becomes something tougher. The film is, moreover, an interesting reminder of something that the British prefer to overlook assomething it doesn’t quite fit into the Churchillian narrative of never surrendering: the Nazi occupation of British territory – the Channel Islands. It wasn’t just the French who suffered the misery of occupation, and the sordid nightmare of people pursuing petty grudges with anonymous letters to the Nazi authorities. Jenny Seagrove gives a fierce and capable performance as Louisa Gould, a Jersey woman who hid a fugitive Russian slave-worker, nicknamed Bill (Julian Kostov). MaryAnn’s quick take… Not alt-history but a true story from a Nazi-occupied English-speaking place, a hugely relevant reminder that resistance to injustice is an absolute imperative. I’m “biast” (pro): always desperate for movies about women

We seem to be enthralled at the moment by alt-history stories about Nazis in England and America: the just-wrapped SS-gb on the BBC, The Man in the High Castle on Amazon. Perhaps they’re expressions of relief, of how easily such things might have happened; more likely we fear that similar nightmares are starting to happen now under slightly different guises. Yet it seems we’ve almost forgotten that there actually was a Nazi occupation of English-speaking places in WWII: the Channel Islands, the British Crown dependences between England and France. The majority of films that linger over the horrors of the Second World War tend to focus on the soldiers, the young men who left home to serve their country, and risk their lives on a daily basis. It’s somewhat more infrequent to delve into the lives of those back at home, struggling to get by, constantly afraid their loved ones will be killed, while also vying to survive back on home soil. It’s here Christopher Menaul’s profound drama Another Mother’s Son is set, based on the true story of Louisa Gould.

Second World War drama begins UK shoot; first image revealed.
Boyzone frontman Ronan Keating has joined the ensemble cast of period drama Another Mother’s Son, which also includes Jenny Seagrove, John Hannah, Amanda Abbington, Peter Wight and Susan Hampshire.
Principal photography is underway on the film, which will shoot for six weeks across Somerset and the South West of England.
Another Mother’s Son is set during the Second World War, when the island of Jersey was occupied by the Nazis.
The film is based on the true story of Louisa Gould, who took in an escaped Russian Pow and hid him over the course of the war, amid growing tension as it became clear that British wartime leader Winston Churchill would not risk an assault to re-capture the island and the community began to fray under pressures of hunger, occupation and divided loyalty.
BAFTA-winning Chris Menaul (Summer In February) directs a screenplay by Jenny Lecoat.
