Mansoor Noor in ‘The Furnace.’
When Mansoor Noor decided to study at the Actors Centre Australia in 2014 after playing the lead in the ABC sci-fi series Shifters and a supporting role in the ABC docudrama Singapore 1942: End of Empire, it was a big gamble.
“It was a huge investment and risk for me, given there were hardly any people that looked like me on the screen and stages, unless it was a stereotype,” Noor tells If.
“I’m so glad I did because of the changes we are starting to see now, although in the the majority of my on-set experiences, I have yet to see the same shift to diversity we are seeing on screen.”

Producer Steve Jaggi is convinced audiences are hankering for films with positive, joyful themes, an antidote to the dark subjects often favoured by filmmakers.
Putting his money where his mouth is, Jaggi launched The Incubator last year through his Indefatigable Pictures banner to develop and produce life-affirming films.
The first three projects to benefit from that initiative are either completed or in post. All are from first-time filmmakers, part of Jaggi.s plan to help foster the international careers of Australian creatives.

The two retire to his hotel suite where Frank finds his match in a frightening and erotic game of truth or dare that takes both to the edge, and over.
Playing the couple are Los Angeles-based Aussies Nick Barkla (Blind Company, TV.s Rush) and Laura Gordon (Saw V, TV.s Twentysomething). Marcus Johnson plays the hotel porter.

Producer Steve Jaggi has no regrets about launching Circle of Lies in 11 independent cinemas a few weeks before the teen drama was released on DVD and Video-on-Demand, breaking the standard 120-day gap.
The revenues from box-office takings and selling copies of the DVD, posters and autographed 1-sheets at some locations were modest- just $55,000. But Jaggi believes that strategy, which included Q&As with director Matt Cerwen and cast members, will pay off in DVD and VoD sales.
"Despite the huge amount of work I'm very happy we did this," he tells If. He was surprised to find that although the film is aimed primarily at teens, most ticket buyers were aged 40-plus.
He was heartened that most stayed for the Q&As and many said they enjoyed the film. He tried to keep ticket prices as low as possible and offered discounts to school groups.

Screen industry figures took to social media on Saturday night, most lamenting the election result.
The negative responses continued on Sunday although, to be fair, the Coalition.s victory was warmly welcomed in some circles.
Here.s a sample of Facebook postings:
Julie Marlow: A rotten week; a friend died way too soon, an emotional funeral and now this debacle of an election.
Angie Fielder: Despite the polls, I can't believe it's happening, I can't believe someone like Tony Abbott could be elected to lead our country.
Polly Staniford Seager: Soooooo depressing! Can't even bear to read/watch the news.
John L Simpson: Sad, not the Australia that's in my heart.
Stephen Lance: I can't watch.
Matilda Brown: How did we go from Julia to Tony? This is horrible.
Steve Saragossi: Australia, what the hell have you just done?

Cradlewood, the “romantic gothic fairytale” from Hand Picked Films, has found its leading man in Vampire Diaries star Ian Somerhalder.
The indie will be directed by Harry Weinmann, with a script penned by Stephen Sewell (The Boys) and and John Paul Chappelle (Bathroy). Somerhalder will play the Australian heir to a large family fortune surrounded by whispers of a curse. Legend has it that a pact exists between a demon and the family that whenever a male child is born into the family, the father will be killed. Strange events begin around the time that the heir suspects his girlfriend to be pregnant, and it begins to look as though the curse is more than just legend.
Producer Michael Shane said, “We see this is as almost like an American-style ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’ in look and feel… It’s a perfect segue for the kids who have outgrown ‘Twilight’ but want something romantic and scary.

There's a rising market in fantasy/horror films with a strong romance backdriop to them. Bare witness to the Twilight craze and that's your answer for where the craze began. Whether the streak of hor-rom movies will turn into a genuine sub-genre with lasting legs remains to be seen, but for the moment Hollywood is getting the projects moving in the pipeline.
An indie project called Cradlewood is the latest film of this type to be announced. The Hollywood Reporter breaks the story about this new project and reveals that it's nabbed Ian Somerhalder, once of Lost and now of The Vampire Diaries, to play the lead male role.
