I’m a big RPG fan now, but that wasn’t always the case. Super Mario RPG introduced me to the genre, but, like many people my age, Final Fantasy VII was the one that wowed me the most. After Final Fantasy VII, I was hungry for more, and Square’s next RPG was one that was surprisingly up my alley. Trading a traditional fantasy setting that usually comes with the genre for a Resident Evil-style bio-horror plot, Parasite Eve immediately grabbed me with its compelling setup and clever twist on the Ffvii battle system. Even now, 25 years after the initial Japanese release of Parasite Eve, I’m hard pressed to think of an RPG that feels as unique and striking as the PlayStation classic.
Parasite Eve is a sequel to the Japanese novel of the same name by novelist and pharmacologist Hideaki Sena. The game, produced by Hironobu Sakaguchi...

Hot off the heels of the debut trailer for his feature film, Mario is back on Oct. 20 with a wild new game for Nintendo Switch, Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope.
The game is the sequel to 2017’s shockingly good strategy game Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, which saw Nintendo’s mustachioed mascot team up with the Minions-esque Rabbids (themselves a spin-off of the Rayman series). Published by Ubisoft, that game took a surprising twist by merging both series into an Xcom styled strategy game that somehow stuck the landing with whimsy to spare,...

I love Final Fantasy Xv. The game got a stellar review from me toward the end of last year, and I included it at the #2 spot on my list of 2016’s very best RPGs. Even still, I couldn’t help but be surprised by how giddy I became when I first started up the Episode Gladiolus Dlc during my Pax East preview. I credit that excitement to two things: one, how unbelievably cool it feels to be getting even more of a game I already played and enjoyed for well over 100 hours; and two, just how different and refreshing Gladio feels as a playable character. I know the campaign isn’t supposed to be that long, at least in terms of completing its miniature story arc, but the exhilaration of controlling a new character within the already-excellent combat system almost made me feel like I was playing a full sequel.

If you were to ask me what the common denominator is across the vast majority of my favorite games, I’d be able to answer you in about half a nanosecond: the characters. The RPG might be my favorite genre, but I’m hardly the sort to care about the technicals — talk about “crit rates” and the like absolutely puts me to sleep. No, for me, the biggest mark of whether or not a story-driven game is a success is whether or not I miss the characters when I have to step away from my system. I know I’m not alone; the digital friendships forged in games like Persona 4 and Fire Emblem: Awakening are written about by passionate fans every day. Now, after 10 years of waiting to truly meet the characters of Final Fantasy Xv, I can confirm that their adventure is another one to add to the list.

Square Enix used its "Uncovered: Final Fantasy Xv" event in Los Angeles last night to announced a September 30th worldwide release date for the highly anticipated game title "Final Fantasy Xv".
The big surprise though was that in addition to the game, Square Enix and its partners also announced several large-scale projects set within the Final Fantasy Xv Universe, the biggest being a whole new CG animated feature.
Sony Pictures Entertainment and Square Enix will distribute "Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy Xv," the computer-animated feature which will set the stage for the main Final Fantasy Xv narrative. "Game of Thrones" stars Sean Bean and Lena Headey along with "Breaking Bad" actor Aaron Paul lend their voices to the project which will be released digitally worldwide before the game launch.
Then there's "Brotherhood Final Fantasy Xv," a new five standalone episodes anime series exploring the friendships between crown prince Noctis and his three comrades.

What do you get when one of the best RPG game developers in the world teams up with Nintendo and creates an RPG starring the most popular video game character of all time? You get Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, one of the most acclaimed games to feature the lovable Italian plumber. An adventure/role-playing title, Super Mario RPG was the brainchild of a corporate collaboration between Nintendo and Squaresoft. Although Square developed Super Mario RPG under direct guidance from producer Shigeru Miyamoto, many fans in the mid-’90s were skeptical that it would be good. But it was, and Mario and the Mushroom Kingdom made the transition to the RPG genre in perfect form. The game was well-received upon release, praised particularly for its 3D rendered graphics and colorful cast. There was nothing quite like it at the time, and so Super Mario RPG became an instant classic,...

Is there anything that Mario can’t do? Nintendo has placed the iconic plumber in as many professions as the Japanese publisher has deemed marketable to a mass consumer base. He’s been a race car driver, referee, golfer, and even a giant gorilla tamer. Obviously, Mario can do anything if he sets his mind to it; a true renaissance man.
Much like Mario himself, his series has become rather versatile over time. Starting off as a simple 2D platforming game it soon evolved and spread itself into multiple genres such as side-scrollers, kart racers and sports. But none was quite so much a leap as Nintendo’s ambitious venture into the RPG realm with 1996’s Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars.

Everyone has heard the famous phrase “I’m going to Disneyland” uttered by sports heroes and other famous people. Kingdom Hearts, however, has you experience the full ride throughout the Disney animated universe. There are no lines and no waiting as you run through abridged versions of childhood favorites such as Tarzan and The Little Mermaid.
Before the plot even takes off, a beautiful opening cinematic raises gaming hopes to a hopelessly cheesy J-pop song. Immediately after, you are thrust into a series of tutorials atop stained glass platforms: The Station of Awakening. As Sora, a spiky-haired anime protagonist, it is your job to make a multitude of choices and participate in simple combat. The amazing thing is that the choices of weapons and the questionnaire will change the game-play for each unique result. For instance, choosing the sword...

Square Enix has confirmed that the all-star First Production Department developing Final Fantasy Xv include Shinji Hashimoto (producer), Tetsuya Nomura (director and character designer), Hajime Tabata (co-director) and Takeshi Nozue (lead art director). Yoko Shimomura, the famed composer who is best known for her work in the Kingdom Hearts series has also been confirmed for Final Fantasy Xv. Additionally, Square Enix detailed the cast and synopsis of Final Fantasy Xv: • Noctis Lucis Caelum: A childhood affliction endowed Noctis, heir apparent to the throne of Lucis, with the mystical power to see a heavenly light, through which he could sense others' deaths. Noctis rejects rigid royal conventions and acts as somewhat of a renegade, much to the dismay of those who tend to him. Yet while "...

A few months ago, I wrote an article about the music of the Final Fantasy series, which featured thirty definitive tracks from a selection of hundreds that have been heard throughout the franchise’s long and illustrious history.
In 2002, the series diversified somewhat, as several of its characters and key elements were incorporated into the new Kingdom Hearts franchise, an action role-playing-game featuring Disney worlds and characters. Developed by Final Fantasy’s creators, Square, in partnership with Disney themselves, the series doesn’t have as rich of a heritage as its predecessor, but it features music of a similarly high quality, composed almost exclusively by Japanese composer Yoko Shimomura.
He may not be as renowned as Nobuo Uematsu, but the fifteen pieces of exquisite music featured in this list show that Shimomura is at least comparable to the man, and has a bright future ahead of him if Kingdom Hearts III ever enters development.
