Best. Christmas. Ever! Movie Review Rating:
Star Cast: Heather Graham, Brandy Norwood, Jason Biggs, Matt Cedeño, Wyatt Hunt
Director: Mary Lambert
Writers: Todd Calgi Gallicano, Charles Shyer
Best. Christmas. Ever! Movie Review Out! (Picture Credit: IMDb)
What’s Good: Clocking in at 80 minutes, the film resembles a festive TV special, embracing familiar Christmas themes. The primary setting, Jackie’s suburban McMansion, exudes comfort, adorned with holiday decorations. Brandy’s musical performance adds a lively touch, and the absurd final act nearly ventures into “so-bad-it’s-good” territory.
What’s Bad: Despite a more interesting pedigree with Charles Shyer co-writing, the film descends into mediocrity, lacking wit and cohesiveness. Unremarkable performances by Jason Biggs and Matt Cedeño, coupled with a lackluster script, contribute to the film’s mundane nature. The set decorations fail to camouflage its shortcomings, and under Mary Lambert’s direction, the potential for dark comedy transforms into a saccharine family movie.

I will start this review by declaring that that title annoys me much more than it should. Why the full stops and the exclamation mark? It just feels very unnecessary. Now that is out of the way, let’s talk about the movie.
When Jackie sends out her annual ragging Christmas newsletter (I don’t think that’s a thing here in the UK – not to my knowledge – but they always seem to be a thing in American movies), it includes an invite for any of the readers (and friends) to join her at Christmas. Her high school best friend then accidentally ends up at her house after a long drive and they are forced to spend Christmas together.

It was nice while it lasted: David Fincher’s “The Killer” opened to #1 on the Netflix Top 10 last week and it’s now #3. Another high-profile Netflix Original took its place with Mary Lambert’s “Best. Christmas. Ever!” Trivia ensues: Much earlier in their careers, Fincher and Lambert each directed high-profile Madonna videos.
We’re still waiting on the PVOD releases of October titles “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour,” “Five Nights at Freddy’s” (already streaming on Peacock), and “Killers of the Flower Moon” (soon to be streaming on Apple TV+). That left a sweet spot for Disney to debut Gareth Edwards’ “The Creator” at $19.99 — a rare film that’s not part of a franchise, and budgeted under $100 million.
The sci-fi thriller was a modest box office performer (just over $100 million worldwide), so its post-theatrical earnings are critical for potential profit. It is #1 at Vudu, which ranks by revenue. It was #1 during the week at iTunes,...

Director Mary Lambert delivers yuletide warmth and heartfelt cheer to Netflix subscribers with “Best. Christmas. Ever!” The story centered on two women rediscovering their strength and sparkle by mending their fractured friendship finds the correct balance of cynical and saccharine without upsetting the scale. The streamer’s practically patented brand of holiday hijinks is amped up to a ridiculous degree as the hyperbolic title would suggest. Even so, its absurdist lunacy acts as a Trojan Horse containing genuinely meaningful sentiments on forgiveness, happiness and bittersweet sorrows — universalities people tend to reflect on as their year comes to a close.

Owen Wilson hopes that the new Nancy Meyers movie can be released in cinemas. The 54-year-old actor is one of several stars attached to the film 'Paris Paramount' and hopes that Warner Bros. stepping in to acquire the project means it is released on the big screen.Nancy had been due to helm the romantic comedy - which will also feature Penelope Cruz, Scarlett Johansson and Michael Fassbender - for Netflix before the streaming giant pulled the plug after the two parties failed to agree on a budget for the picture.Owen told The Hollywood Reporter: "Originally, it was intended as a streaming movie, but now maybe it'll be theatrical (with Warner Bros.), and that seems like what you would want and expect from a Nancy Meyers movie."The 'Paint' star revealed some of the discussions he had with 'The Parent Trap' director...

After Netflix plugged the plug on Nancy Meyers’ expensive romantic-comedy movie earlier this week, it seems that Warner Bros may come to the rescue.
Nancy Meyers had spent over a year developing Paris Paramount for Netflix, but she and the streaming service clashed over the budget. Nancy Meyers wanted at least $150 million, which would have made it one of the most expensive romantic comedies of all time, but Netflix wouldn’t budge past $130 million. It was reported just last week that Scarlett Johansson, Penélope Cruz, Michael Fassbender and Owen Wilson were circling roles in the movie, and it was said that at least $80 million of that budget would have gone to the talent. Sources told THR that Warner Bros was “attracted to the idea of a ready-made hot project with an A-list cast and possible summer start date.“

The Nancy Meyers movie that recently fell apart at Netflix over budget issues may be revived at Warner Bros.
After being set up at Netflix for over a year, Meyers’ long-awaited return to the director’s chair began to fall apart last week over disagreements about the budget. Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that Warners, attracted to the idea of a ready-made hot project with an A-list cast and possible summer start date, may be stepping in to pick it up. Exploratory talks are underway, according to several sources.
Scarlett Johansson was attached to play the lead role in Meyers’ feature, with Penélope Cruz, Owen Wilson and Michael Fassbender also eying the project. Meyers will write, direct and produce the comedy, which is currently known as Paris Paramount, although it is not clear if that’s the actual title, a working title or a code name.

We’ll have to wait a little longer for the next movie from Nancy Meyers as Netflix has pulled the plug on what was to be a star-studded romantic comedy.
The reason for Netflix choosing to axe the project comes down to the budget. Nancy Meyers was wanting at least $150 million dollars, which would have made it one of the most expensive romantic comedies of all time, but Netflix wouldn’t budge past $130 million. That’s still an awfully high budget for a movie of this type, but Meyers typically employs an all-star cast who demand big salaries. It was reported just last week that Scarlett Johansson, Penélope Cruz, Michael Fassbender and Owen Wilson were circling roles in the movie.

Update [Tuesday March 14, 11:14 p.m.]: Moviegoers agonizing over the breakdown of Nancy Meyers’ latest film (one that was meant to bring her out of retirement), don’t cry into your cashmere just yet. News hit earlier on Tuesday that Netflix was no longer developing the new rom-com from the iconic director, but sources with knowledge of the project said that filmmakers are looking into other options to get it to screen. The untitled film was reported to star Scarlett Johansson, Penélope Cruz, Owen Wilson and Michael Fassbender. Pending talent availability, the project will be shopped to prospective buyers as a package, one source added. Representatives for Meyers did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Netflix is shutting down its Nancy Meyers movie, the star-studded romantic comedy that was expected to be her first directing vehicle in nearly a decade.
According to sources, Netflix and Meyers could not come to an agreement on the budget. Meyers is said to have asked for a budget of at least $150 million, but the studio did not want to go over $130 million. It was a steep price tag for a genre that is usually more in the midbudget range and one that could have made it the most expensive romantic comedy of all time. Meyers, who last directed the 2015 Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro feature The Intern, has commanded budgets on the higher end for the genre and is known for her work with big stars such as Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep. She is also known for her Architectural Digest-worthy production design.

The filmmaker behind films like What Women Want, The Intern, and Something’s Gotta Give, Nancy Meyers, is assembling an A-list cast for her next movie. According to reports, Scarlett Johansson, Owen Wilson, Penelope Cruz, and Michael Fassbender could join Meyers’ next feature-length project insiders refer to as Paris Paramount.
We hear Johansson is circling the lead role, with sources saying the story revolves around a talented young writer/director who falls head over heels for a producer. After taking the entertainment industry by storm to do several successful projects, the couple ends their union romantically and professionally. Later, the duo finds themselves working alongside one another when a unique project crosses their path, forcing them back into an old routine plagued with complications and overbearing Hollywood personalities.
The plot shares similarities with Meyers’ Hollywood experience and her longtime romantic and professional relationship with Charles Shyer, another of Tinseltown’s writer-director-producer combos.

Meyers will write, direct and produce the comedy, which is currently known as Paris Paramount, although it is not clear if that’s the actual title, a working title or a code name.
Sources say the story centers on a talented young writer-director who falls in love with a producer, with the pair making several successful films before calling it quits romantically and professionally. The two are forced back together, however, when a great new project arises,...

When Kenya Barris and Jonah Hill came together to write a comedy about a Black woman and Jewish man who fall in love, decide to marry, and suddenly find their parents either objecting to their proposed union or making it really weird, it was impossible to not view the project as a riff on, or an outright remake of Stanley Kramer's "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner." Considering that Kramer's film has aged like a Kroger cheese plate in the sun, and the 2005 remake, despite being a modest box-office success, is only referenced nowadays when people lament that Kramer's film ever existed, a smart director would likely, aggressively deny any influence or association.
Still, watch the movie: if "You People" isn't a post-Obama spin on Kramer's film, what exactly is it? Barris is happy you asked. He had another Hollywood film on his mind, one that was actually good, and...

Nancy Meyers, co-writer and producer of the 1991 Father of the Bride movie starring Steve Martin and Diane Keaton, says late actress Cindy Williams inspired the remake.
In an Instagram post remembering the Laverne & Shirley star, who died last Wednesday at the age of 75, Meyers expressed her sadness over hearing of Williams’ death. And in a brief anecdote, the writer and producer of the film directed by ex-husband Charles Shyer revealed how the beloved TV icon helped make the ’90s romantic comedy a reality.
“What few people know is that it was Cindy’s idea to remake Father of the Bride,” Meyers recalled. “She told me she was watching the Spencer Tracey [sic] version on TV one night and thought it would be a great movie to remake.”
Meyers went on to add that Williams not only “made it happen” but altered her professional trajectory in Hollywood as a result — all...

In “Father of the Bride,” Steve Martin showed audiences just how hard it can be for a dad to let go when his daughter gets married. But everything gets a little easier the eighth time around.
Martin reprised his role as George Banks from Charles Shyer’s 1991 film on Saturday when he hosted “Saturday Night Live” alongside Martin Short. The parody sketch advertised a new sequel, “Father of the Bride: Part VIII,” which features Martin’s daughter Annie (Heidi Gardner) preparing to get married yet again after surviving seven divorces.
Martin is less than enthused about this prospect, considering his daughter’s track record with marriage and the continued financial burden that her wedding habit has placed on him. He laments that the “I’m your little girl” argument is no longer as persuasive as it once was, given that his daughter is now 52-years-old and has forced her mother...

“Black Adam” (Warner Bros. Discovery/19.99) swept the #1 positions on all VOD charts this week. The Dwayne Johnson-starring DC Comics hit (still #6 in theaters over the weekend) is the fall’s second 100 million+ domestic release to reach home availability. The other is “Smile” (Paramount/19.99). Now in its second week, it fell from #1 to #6 at Vudu (which ranks by revenue), is #10 at Google Play, and not listed at all at iTunes (both calculate by transactions).
The difference: “Black Adam” is not streaming on HBO Max. “Smile” is on Paramount +.
We’ve seen some past releases thrive with that parallel play, but studios are beginning to realize the gold in the PVOD hills justifies delaying streaming for subscribers. Hit films boosts subscriptions, but they don’t offer the immediate rush of a lengthy VOD run. It also suggests consumers are beginning to catch on — how many people have rented a VOD...

Justin Hartley is getting back into the Christmas spirit. After crushing it as Kevin Pearson in the critically-acclaimed TV series “This Is Us”, the 45-year-old actor can next be seen in the Netflix film, “The Noel Diary”. Based on the novel of the same name, “The Noel Diary” marks Hartley’s second holiday-themed movie after “A Bad Moms Christmas”.
“I love the idea of families coming together and sitting down and watching Christmas movies,” Hartley tells Et Canada. “Every single year, I watch “Christmas Vacation”. I love to watch “A Christmas Carol”, “A Christmas Story” and “It’s a Wonderful Life”. These are movies that I have seen hundreds of times. I have always been a fan of that Christmas genre.”

Memo to studios and streamers: Do you want Charles Shyer, the creative force behind such massive hits as “The Parent Trap” (which he co-wrote) and “Father of the Bride” (which he directed and co-wrote), to direct a movie for you? Let him do it his way, and you’ll be just fine.
After almost 20 years out of the directing game (his previous film was the Jude Law-starring “Alfie” remake in 2004), Shyer returns to the kind of feel-good filmmaking he made his signature, thanks to his early films, like the aforementioned hits and even “Baby Boom,” all co-written with his ex-wife, fellow comedy queen Nancy Meyers. This time, there is something different: The former studio mainstay has alighted for Netflix.
Shyer’s return to filmmaking bears the usual hallmarks: good-natured comedy, lots of family stuff, a sweet romance, and all in a holiday setting to boot. The film is “The Noel Diary,...

The Oscar-nominated screenwriter turned filmmaker has returned to the director’s chair with his first film in years just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday, Netflix’s The Noel Diary starring Justin Hartley and Barrett Doss. Based on the book by Richard Paul Evans, Hartley toplines as a best-selling author who returns home at Christmas to settle his estranged mother’s estate, only to encounter a mysterious stranger as well as a diary that may hold the keys to their respective pasts.
Turns out he cast one of his leads with a little help from his longtime collaborator and onetime wife, Nancy Meyers. Nick Nolte and Julia Roberts notoriously did not get along during the making of “I Love Trouble,” director Charles Shyer’s 1994 romantic comedy about two rival newspaper reporters forced to come together to investigate a train derailment. Roberts was midway through filming the movie when she told The New York Times in December 1993 while promoting “The Pelican Brief” that Nolte was “completely disgusting” on set.
“From the moment I met him we sort of gave each other a hard time, and naturally we get on each other’s nerves,” Roberts said when asked about Nolte’s reputation of behaving crudely on set. “[While he can be] completely charming and very nice, he’s also completely disgusting. He’s going to hate me for saying this, but he seems go out of his way to repel people. He’s a kick.”

Charles Shyer and Nancy Meyers' "I Love Trouble" was supposed to be a throwback rom-com in the mold of a Spencer Tracy-Katharine Hepburn classic. The pairing of Nick Nolte and Julia Roberts as a couple of quarrelsome newspaper reporters seemed relatively promising. Roberts was one of the most bankable stars in Hollywood at the time, while Nolte was two years removed from being named People's Sexiest Man Alive. This duo was nothing if not photogenic. Surely, they could generate enough chemistry to keep movie theaters packed throughout the summer of 1994. The erstwhile movie magazine Premiere was bullish enough on the film to predict it would be the fifth highest grossing movie of the season. It felt like a can't-miss proposition.
But miss is exactly what it did. The 45 million film opened to a paltry 7.9 million in late June, barely finishing fifth ahead of Mike Nichols' "Wolf," which was...

I know there are so many of us lamenting the loss of romantic comedies at the cinema. They have all funneled their way to the streaming services and now star mostly teenagers, and look like they were made for about five bucks and a pack of gum. Rom-coms have the ability to inject so much life into a multiplex, to give us a respite from the endless slog of sci-fi action movies and superhero pictures. They are as much of a glittering fantasy as "Lord of the Rings," but their magic comes from their charm and the charisma of the dazzling movie stars at the center. For years, they were denigrated as "chick flicks" and lesser works of art, and now, we didn't know how good we had it.
One person who firmly agrees with that sentiment is the undisputed queen of the romantic comedy over the last 30-plus years: Julia Roberts.

In July 2022, Craig Erwich, the President of Hulu Originals and ABC Entertainment, deemed "Only Murders in the Building" the "true crown jewel" of Hulu's programming. The true-crime satire has charmed audiences across generations, thanks, in part, to its intergenerational casting choices and self-aware dialogue. Selena Gomez's Mabel brings fresh and deadpan humor to the Arconia, pairing well with the outlandish physical comedy from Steve Martin's Charles and Martin Short's Oliver. To date, the killer series is the most-watched comedy in Hulu's streaming history and earned a Season 3 renewal even before Season 2 debuted.
However, "Only Murders in the Building" isn't Martin and Short's first rodeo together. The iconic duo has starred opposite each other in a handful of comedy films over the past few decades before putting on their best podcasting voices to solve murder mysteries in the Big Apple. Here’s a weird feeling: the sense that the eponymous father of the bride is right when it comes to his many trepidations about a would-be happy event that is about to consume his life, for better and very much for worse. Edward Streeter’s 1949 novel “Father of the Bride” inspired Vincente Minnelli’s 1950 Best Picture nominee and Charles Shyer’s sterling 1991 version (plus sequels and even a TV series), and now the story receives yet another reimagining, this time through the prism of a vibrant and complicated Cuban-American family led by Andy Garcia as the appropriately addled patriarch.
Its heart is in the right place, but even its wackiest diversions — including “SNL” star Chloe Fineman trying to put her spin on Martin Short’s indelible wedding planner Franck, plus a fresh take on the two families at its center — fall short of previous versions, and find themselves awkwardly tucked beside far more serious subplots.

Considered to be one of the queens of the romantic comedy, writer-director-producer Nancy Meyers has helped shape the arc of the genre over the course of her career with her singular voice and style. Much of Meyers' work focuses on her own perspective and identity as a Jewish woman and mother, featuring protagonists of the same orientation, and telling stories about sex, relationships, gender dynamics, and working women in a shifting modern landscape. In her early career, many of her scripts were co-written with her ex-husband and director Charles Shyer.

Baby Boom, directed by Charles Shyer with a script by him and his then-wife Nancy Meyers, encapsulates 1987 beautifully. From young James Spader's Wham!-like hair to Keaton's fashions to the dated woman-in-the-workplace-can-she-have-it-all plot, it could be a time capsule film for the year and its essence. While we're celebrating 1987, this film couldn't be a better example of exactly where we were.
