A new episode of the JoBlo Horror Originals video series Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? has just been released, and for this one we’re digging into the making of one of my all-time favorite movies: the 1987 horror anthology Creepshow 2 (watch it Here)! To find out what went into the making of Creepshow 2, check out the video embedded above.
Directed by Michael Gornick from a screenplay by George A. Romero (based on stories written by Stephen King), Creepshow 2 has the following synopsis:
Join our old friend, the rotting Creep himself, as he introduces this horror anthology which presents gruesome looks at three tales of horror: a hit-and-run driver in “The Hitchhiker”, a wooden Indian in “Ol’ Chief Wooden Head”, and four friends whose vacation on a secluded lake turns into a nightmare in “The Raft”. Creepshow 2 is a deliciously wicked roller coaster ride that will...

The widespread Covid-19 pandemic which took hold at the end of 2019 has made its way around the globe and looks like the sort of thing one would expect to see in either a David Cronenberg or George A. Romero film. Mr. Cronenberg has made a career out of making films which essentially depict human beings experiencing their bodies revolting against themselves while the late Mr. Romero directed a series of zombie films wherein droves of flesh-eating, reanimated corpses, presumably brought back to life by radiation emitted from a space probe returning from Venus that blew up in Earth’s atmosphere, wreak havoc among the living. Both directors present simultaneously dark and comedic visions of humanity, and we all now find ourselves in a precarious scenario that one would equate to the nightmares conjured up by these filmmakers since the quarantine...

When it comes to horror we all tend to have our favourite type, some will say slashers while others may say they enjoy good old Hammer. I grew up on horror and when I was younger I had a thirst for any film I could get hold of, I found the styles I loved and directors that really caught my interest. One of these directors was David Cronenberg, but one movie that never really sat right with me was Shivers, I just didn’t get it. Then I grew older and wiser and with greater understanding realised just how good the film actually is.

Rabid has always been one of my favourite David Cronenberg movies, there is just something about the strange little film that makes it more accessible than some of his others like Shivers. When I was younger I remembered it as the film with the women with the strange bloodsucking thing under her arm, but as with most of Cronenberg’s work as I grew older I started to understand his vision of the film and his use of body horror.
When Rose (Marilyn Chambers) is involved in a bike accident she has to undergo experimental emergency surgery to save her life. When she awakens from her coma though she has an insatiable taste for human blood. Once bitten her victims become crazed,...

David Cronenberg puts Canada on the horror map with yet another early career ick-fest, about a vampiric woman armed with a new mutant organ. Marilyn Chambers is the dangerous female who spreads a plague of bloody murder. Fun for the whole family.

‘Body Horror’ is a term synonymous with Canadian director David Cronenberg. His early work in the horror field (Rabid, The Brood, The Fly) all share connective tissue through the theme of internal horror – a transformation or catharsis from within (always for the worse) that strikes the viewer in a very personal way. Shivers (1975), aka They Came from Within, is his first feature film - a clever, creepy, and gritty introduction to the sub-genre he helped create.
Distributed by Cinepix Film Properties Inc. (Canada) and Trans American Films (Us) in October ’75 and July ’76 respectively, and produced on a budget of $179,000 (Cad), Shivers played at theaters and Drive-Ins all across North America in the summer of ’76, and up to that point was the most profitable Canadian film produced. Critics were generally kind, including Roger Ebert who thought it was well made, with genuine style and talent on display. There was a new player in the horror world,...

Michael Caine young. Michael Caine movies: From Irwin Allen bombs to Woody Allen classic It's hard to believe that Michael Caine has been around making movies for nearly six decades. No wonder he's had time to appear – in roles big and small and tiny – in more than 120 films, ranging from unwatchable stuff like the Sylvester Stallone soccer flick Victory and Michael Ritchie's adventure flick The Island to Brian G. Hutton's X, Y and Zee, Joseph L. Mankiewicz's Sleuth (a duel of wits and acting styles with Laurence Olivier), and Alfonso Cuarón's Children of Men. (See TCM's Michael Caine movie schedule further below.) Throughout his long, long career, Caine has played heroes and villains and everything in between. Sometimes, in his worst vehicles, he has floundered along with everybody else. At other times, he was the best element in otherwise disappointing fare, e.g., Philip Kaufman's Quills.

Our look back at the movies of David Cronenberg continues with 1977’s Rabid, a typically personal take on the vampire movie…
If Cronenberg’s first commercial feature Shivers was a venereal take on the zombie genre, his follow-up, 1977’s Rabid, applies the same preoccupations of sexuality and disease to the vampire movie.
In fact, Rabid is remarkably similar to Shivers in several ways. A scientific breakthrough goes awry, turning a young woman into a crazed, blood-sucking killer. Her victims, in turn, are infected with the same bloodlust, and the disease gradually spreads throughout Montreal.
The reasons for this narrative similarity are probably because Cronenberg began to make Rabid so close to the completion of his first film. With Shivers proving unexpectedly successful for exploitation specialists, Cinepix (propelled as it was by no small amount of controversy), the company immediately asked the director if he had another ideas. Rabid originally began as something called Mosquito,...

The studio is looking to return the Ross Macdonald written mystery novel series about the exploits of sleuth Lew Archer to the big screen. Mega-producer Joe Silver has also signed on to the project. Rich boy Anthony Galton had dropped out of sight more than twenty years ago. To Lew Archer that meant the man was either dead or didn't want to be found. But Tony's nice old mother had a dream that her son would still come home before she died. So Archer took on the case hoping that Tony and Mom could live happily ever after... until he discovered that once upon a time there was a clever swindle, a scared blonde, and a very nasty murder. The Lew Archer series of books was published in the 1950s and 60s, with The Galton Case being its eighth. Starting in 1966, it spun off a couple of films,...

Joseph Brooks, a one-time ad-jingle writer whose 1977 song "You Light Up My Life" won him an Oscar, a Grammy and a spot on the pop charts, apparently killed himself in his Manhattan apartment Sunday, according to multiple news reports. Brooks was 73 and facing trial on 82 counts of sexual abuse for allegedly raping 11 young actresses whom he reputedly lured to his Upper East Side residence with the promise to audition them for screen roles. In addition, his estranged son, Nicholas Brooks, 25, was awaiting trial for allegedly strangling his girlfriend, swimsuit designer Sylvie Cachay, in a bathtub within the private club Soho House last year.

Bert Fields announced that Joe Silver has "won Round One" against Goldman Sachs. That's because the entertainment biz litigator says Federal Judge Ronald S. W. Lew ruled Tuesday that Silver’s multi-pronged lawsuit alleging breach of contract and fraud against the giant investment banker could go forward to trial. Ruling from the bench, Judge Lew denied Goldman’s motion to dismiss Silver’s complaint. “Obviously, we’re very pleased with Judge Lew’s decision. It’s a complex case, but he seemed to have it down cold,” Fields said in a statement. Silver is claiming Goldman Sachs stiffed him on more than $30 million from a share of revenue from his Dark Castle Films. To put the lawsuit in context, the relationship began in those financially flush days of 2007 when Wall Street was eager to invest in the movie biz. But then the financial crisis hit, and Silver sued a year ago.

Warner Bros. seem to finally be moving forward with their big-screen adaptation of DC Comics World War II hero Sgt. Rock. Way forward. Like, into the future.
The project, which has been in the works for the last 20 years, has hit a number of production snags along the way. Many of these, more recently, have been related to big budgets and a general lack of interest in WWII period pieces. Enthusiasm for American war movies has dropped off considerably in the years following 9/11, to the point that it seems like only Saving Private Ryan-esque, serious meditations on the topic of war (or Quentin Tarantino) can succeed. This has led to the studio’s recent decision to abandon the ’40s setting altogether and move the character to the battlefields of the future.
