As the Emmys approach on Monday, there is an impressive roster of comedy series nominees like “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” “Abbott Elementary,” “Ted Lasso,” “Hacks,” “Barry,” “Only Murders in the Building.” What do they have in common, besides wit and delightful (or delightfully cranky or murderous) characters? As with virtually every top TV comedy of this millennium, the laughter you hear is your own!
It was not always that way. For decades beginning in the 1950s, TV comedies boosted their punchlines with the use of recorded laughter. In a a time when TV shows were primarily filmed in front of a studio audience (think “I Love Lucy”), CBS sound engineer named Charley Douglass thought that the audience’s organic reactions weren’t good enough. So, he started manipulating the audio levels in postproduction, developing a machine nicknamed the Laff Box.
Even when shows became more sophisticated, most used some form of laugh track for “sweetening.

"Orphan Black" is cloning viewers like no show has ever done before.
When the acclaimed BBC America drama premiered its second season last Saturday, its ratings improved slightly from season 1 with 785,000 viewers, including 391,000 the coveted adults 18-49 demographic. But factoring in DVR playback, those numbers grow astronomically -- 1.6 million viewers and 746,000 in the demo.
That's a huge, 97 percent increase -- in fact, it's a bigger bump than anything received by every other series on television (broadcast or cable) this year. "Orphan Black" has set a new record.
It's no surprise, considering the show airs on Saturday nights and draws a younger audience. As BBC America Gm Perry Simon said, "Our viewers are some of the most affluent and tech savvy in television, and clearly a huge number of them set their DVRs to make sure they didn't miss it."
Clone Club is gonna need a bigger meeting room!

Orphan Black didn’t only clone more viewers for its season 2 premiere — it’s breaking DVR playback records in the days since.

Over the last decade, several cable channels have radically shifted their images and programming to adapt to a rapidly changing media world. Once upon a time, TLC was The Learning Channel and A&E featured performing arts.

Period crime drama Copper is not to return for a third series, confirms BBC America...
There's a kind of symmetry to this news. On the day that BBC America's critical hit Orphan Black arrives on UK television, its first original drama, Copper, is confirmed to have been cancelled.
While Copper attracted a small but loyal following, BBC America's first venture in original drama production didn't make the required impact on audiences and critics (not including, it should be said, our own, who found a great deal to admire in its gritty stories of life in nineteenth-century New York) to survive for another season.
The current habit of cutting shows off before they've had a chance to bed in and develop is a particular bugbear of ours (just how many classic long-running serials wouldn't survive past their bumpy first and second seasons if released today?...

The upcoming season 2 finale of BBC America’s Copper will be the series’ swan song.
The period crime drama, which was BBC America’s first original scripted series, starred Tom Weston-Jones as Kevin Cocoran, a detective who works in New York City’s notorious Five Points neighborhood during the 19th century.

It's the end of the road for Copper on BBC America. The cable channel has announced that the show has been cancelled after two seasons. The cancellation comes following the show's modest ratings.
In a statement, BBC America Gm Perry Simon said, "The opportunity to work with Tom Fontana, Barry Levinson, Will Rokos, Thomas Kelly and the extraordinary cast and crew on this journey is one that we are extremely proud of."
He continued, "Their vision to retell the immigrant experience through the melting pot of New York City was an original and fresh idea that melded well with the essence of BBC America's programming. There will be no third season for BBC’s period drama Copper, whose second-season finale this Sunday will be a series finale. Copper, BBC America‘s first original scripted series, got off to a strong start, setting a record for a BBC America series premiere. But, despite a cast infusion with Donal Logue and Alfre Woodard joining the series in Season 2, Copper lost momentum and was overshadowed by BBC America’s second drama series, the buzzy Orphan Black. “Copper has been a fascinating and exciting experience for everyone involved,” said BBC America Gm Perry Simon. “The opportunity to work with (executive producers) Tom Fontana, Barry Levinson, Will Rokos, Thomas Kelly and the extraordinary cast and crew on this journey is one that we are extremely proud of. BBC America has canceled "Copper" after two seasons on the cable network. This Sunday's Season 2 finale will be the last of the series.
"After 23 episodes, with Lincoln dead and the nation starting to heal, it seems a fitting moment to conclude this American story," read a statement from BBC America's general manager, Perry Simon. "The opportunity to work with [executive producers] Tom Fontana, Barry Levinson, Will Rokos, Thomas Kelly and the extraordinary cast and crew on this journey is one that we are extremely proud of. Set in Civil War-era New York City amidst the chaos of Five Points, "Copper" focused on the Irish immigrant experience seen through the eyes of a policeman, Kevin Corcoran (Tom Weston-Jones), trying to keep some semblance of order.

BBC has pulled the plug on Copper after two seasons.
The period drama has been a modest success for the network, but has failed to generate the sort of enormous buzz of Orphan Black, another BBC original series.

BBC America won't be moving forward with Copper. The period drama, which marked the cable network's first step into original scripted programming has been canceled after two seasons, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. The move comes as little surprise, given Copper's rather modest ratings, much of the narrative wrapping up in the Sept. 22 finale and comparatively bigger buzz reserved for the network's other original commission, Orphan Black. The 3rd annual Critics' Choice Television Awards were handed out last night, and we're pleased to report that horror did pretty well for itself - as did Tatiana Maslany, the breakout star of "Orphan Black."
The Critics' Choice Awards were given out by the Broadcast Television Journalists Association (Btja), and while "American Horror Story: Asylum" got shut out in the Best Movie or Mini-Series category by "Behind the Candelabra," two of its supporting players received some well deserved recognition:
Best Supporting Actor In A Movie Or Mini-series
• Zachary Quinto ("American Horror Story: Asylum") – FX
Best Supporting Actress In A Movie Or Mini-series
• Sarah Paulson ("American Horror Story: Asylum") – FX
What made us happiest, however, was Maslany's win. No, "Orphan Black" isn't horror in the pure sense, but there's a lot about the show that genre fans would appreciate, not least of which is Maslany's incredible performance as not just one,...

Although we're still traumatized from the national nightmare that was Lifetime's unanimously derided "Liz and Dick" biopic, BBC America is hoping to soothe our collective pain with "Burton and Taylor," with Dominic West And Helena Bonham Carter taking over the titular roles last played by Grant Bowler and Lindsay Lohan.
The network has released the first photo of West and Bonham Carter for the 90-minute drama, which follows Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor's private and public relationship, played out against their ill-fated appearance in a 1983 revival of Noel Coward's stage play, "Private Lives." The drama premieres this fall on BBC America and was written by William Ivory ("Made in Dagenham," "Going for Gold") and directed by Richard Laxton ("Effie," "Him And Her," "Hancock").
In a recent statement, BBC Worldwide America General Manager Perry Simon said, “We are thrilled to bring 'Burton and Taylor' to BBC America's Dramaville.

Let the fans go wild. The hot British TV news today is that freshman sci-fi series, Orphan Black has been renewed for a second season over at BBC America. Many are already saying this is an epic win.
At first blush, Orphan Black‘s premise doesn’t seem very different from that of CW’s short lived soap, Ringer. Some key contrasts, however, reveal just why the British series is gathering hoards of fans like moths to a flame.
In the series, which debuted on March 30th, actress Tatiana Maslany stars in the role of Sarah, “an outsider and orphan whose life changes dramatically after witnessing the suicide of a woman, Beth, who looks just like her. Sarah takes her identity, her boyfriend and her bank account.” This is where the similarities between Orphan Black and Ringer end. Enter the sci-fi angle.
This action far from solves Sarah’s problems.
