Jaya Bachchan first noticed Simran as an anchor in Superhit Muqabla. Simran later joined the film industry and had a string of commercially successful films. She established herself among her generation's top female actors in Tamil cinema. She received praise for her willingness to experiment with being successful in villainous and comedic roles.
In 2002, Simran played the mother of an adopted nine-year-old girl in Kannathil Muthamittal (2002). She got first Filmfare Award for Best Tamil Actress for her work in this film. In 2022 Simran co-starred in Rocketry: The Nambi Effect (2022). This film was screened for civil servants and politicians in the Parliament of India. It was one of five films that India nominated for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film.
