At its latest edition, which takes place parallel to the Helsinki Intl. Film Festival — Love & Anarchy, the Finnish Film Affair will again host its well-received Nordic Flair training program, an initiative designed to offer career development for film professionals from across the Nordic region.
After a 2022 edition that focused on sales agents, distributors, buyers and broadcast commissioners, this year’s event will host actors working in one or more of the Nordic countries. Maria Pirkkalainen-Barber, head of Finnish Film Affair and Nordic Flair, says the goal in Helsinki is to offer a launching pad for rising talents looking to take the next step in their careers.
“The opportunities for actors to develop their own chances for an international breakthrough can be challenging, and access to agents and casting directors is competitive. Not to mention how the pandemic years made it more difficult for actors to build international networks,” Pirkkalainen-Barber says.

Keeping it in the family is very much a Hollywood tradition at this point, and in the 21st century acting families are still thriving. Whether it be Cuba Gooding Jr.’s son Mason joining the cast of the last two Scream movies, Lily-Rose Depp leading The Idol, Maya Hawke becoming a fan favorite in Stranger Things, or Ethan Peck (grandson of Gregory) roaming the bridge of the Enterprise in Star Trek, there’s always a new generation of nepo babies lurching from crib to screen.
But one man is overwhelmingly leading the pack in terms of famous male offspring these days. A man who could conceivably consider the Kardashians his Warios. And that’s Stellan Skarsgård.

Christopher Nolan directed the epic biographical thriller film ‘Oppenheimer’ which is adapted from Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin’s biography ‘American Prometheus’.
The plot focuses on the early studies of Oppenheimer and how he directed the Manhattan Project during WWII and his fall from grace owing to his security hearing in 1954.
When Has ‘Oppenheimer’ been Released?
Director Sam Mendes expressed interest in adapting Bird and Sherwin’s biography ‘American Prometheus’ following its publication in 2005.
But during the next fifteen years, the authors grew pessimistic about a film adaptation of their work which caused the project not to be materialized.
Finally, in September 2021, it was announced that Christopher Nolan would write and direct the biographical film with Cillian Murphy in negotiations as a lead cast member.
It is the sixth collaboration of Nolan and Murphy and the first one in which Murphy starred as a lead.

"Oppenheimer" is built around the Trinity Test, the famous 1945 event where J. Robert Oppenheimer and his team of scientists tested an atomic bomb for the first time. This historic moment is the fulcrum on which Christopher Nolan's brilliant, horrifying film turns. Everything prior to the test focuses on Oppenheimer's passion for physics and beating the Nazi's to the punch, while everything after shows how the titular physicist became haunted by his own work and was ostracized by many of his former colleagues and allies as he spoke out against nuclear proliferation.
Nolan told Entertainment Tonight that his film "has a lot to do with the consequences of actions — sort of going ahead and doing these things and then having to deal with the consequences for years afterwards." It's an understatement to say that the consequences of Oppenheimer's work were monumental. The result of the Manhattan Project, which he led,...

Stellan Skarsgård and Gustaf Skarsgård introduced their latest film “What Remains” at Locarno Film Festival on Friday.
Directed by Ran Huang, it was written by Huang and Megan Everett Skarsgård. Andrea Riseborough also stars.
“It took a lot of pain,” admitted Gustaf Skarsgård to the audience after the screening.
“But it helped having Ron there, and dad, and Andrea, so I could really immerse myself in this fucked up journey.”
Despite the team making it all the way to Switzerland, journalists attending an intimate press conference were asked not to inquire about the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, with Gustaf Skarsgård also dodging a question referencing his recent role in “Oppenheimer.”
However, the “Vikings” actor did discuss “the most challenging” role he has ever done.

“Now I am become Death, the Destroyer of Worlds” is the famous quote from the Bhagavad Gita that physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer spoke upon witnessing the first denotation of a nuclear device, as the world entered the new era of nuclear weapons. Oppenheimer is Christopher Nolan’s epic drama about Oppenheimer, his work on the Manhattan Project, and his treatment after the war. The biographical drama starts like a historical thriller and ends like a profound warning to the world, all set against the sweep of history that changed the world.

One windy night in March 2022, in the desert outside Belen, New Mexico, Cillian Murphy was waiting to climb a 100-foot steel tower, a copy of the one that held the first nuclear bomb ever detonated in 1945. The conditions were right for summoning the emotion of the historic scene the Irish actor was about to play as physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer. “You could see this sand coming up off the desert and the skies were ominous,” Murphy says. “I remember thinking, ‘Oh my God, this is fucking great.’ “
Nearby, as gusts whipped at the production tents, producer Emma Thomas was having the opposite reaction. “Imax cameras shooting film in the middle of a windy desert. The absolute worst,” says Thomas. “Miserable for people. Terrible for cameras.”

You might want to leave the kiddies at home for Christopher Nolan’s next epic because Oppenheimer is officially rated R. The mature rating marks Nolan’s first R rating since 2002’s Insomnia, the crime thriller starring Al Pacino, Robin Williams, and Hilary Swank.
In addition to revealing the film’s rating, details about Oppenheimer’s film reels are making the rounds online. The film clocks in at nearly three hours, making it the director’s most extended feature. According to The Associated Press, IMAX prints of Oppenheimer are “11 miles of film stock” that “weigh some 600 pounds.” Nolan shot the movie in a large format, with IMAX screenings ranging from 70mm to IMAX digital, 35mm, Dolby Cinema, and more.
Nolan wants fans to know that the “best possible experience” for watching Oppenheimer is through the IMAX 70mm film format. However, only 25 theaters across North America provide audiences with that option.

The combination of Ben Affleck and Matt Damon proved to be a winning formula for "Air," and the film's theatrical success proved that moviegoers are still interested in more adult-centric storylines that don't involve people with superpowers (read our review here). Granted, Michael Jordan is about as close to a superhero as you can get in the sports world and his global brand appeal certainly didn't hurt the film's impressive box office. Marking the first project from Affleck and Damon's new production company Artists Equity, "Air" was initially going to be released exclusively on Prime Video before Amazon made a late call to release the film theatrically, a gamble that mostly paid off. So far, "Air" has made just a hair under $80 million globally with a premiere on streaming still on the horizon. That kind of coin should make Amazon even more confident in its decision to make a larger...

Amid the big-budget films hitting theaters, you also have something like Air that serves as an alternative that is like a breath of fresh air (no pun intended). Christopher Nolan kicked off Universal’s CinemaCon presentation today in Las Vegas, taking the stage to talk about his thriller Oppenheimer, which releases in July. “I’m here with a story in the story of J Robert Oppenheimer,” Nolan said. “I know of no more dramatic tale with higher stakes, twists and turns and ethical dilemmas. … The finest minds in the country were in a desperate race against the Nazis to harness the power of the atom in World War II. Picture those same minds realizing the possibility that they might set fire to the entire world, yet they went ahead and pushed the button. I wanted to be there and see what that might be like.”

The countdown to "Oppenheimer" continues. Despite social media reports that circulated this morning indicating that Christopher Nolan's historical epic has been pushed down the release schedule, The Wrap has confirmed that "Oppenheimer" is still slated for a July 21, 2023 release. The outlet spoke with a source close to the movie, and was reassured that there are no plans to move Nolan's film about J. Robert Oppenheimer anytime soon.
Rumors spread this morning based on a comment made by Cannes Film Festival Director Thierry Femaux. In an interview with Variety, Fremaux said that he wouldn't have been able to nab "Oppenheimer" for this year's program because "it's being released at the end of the year as part of their awards strategy." According to The Wrap, Fremaux was mistaken, and "Oppenheimer" is still set for a July release just like past Nolan hits including "Inception," "Dunkirk," and "The Dark Knight." The...

Did you know that Michael Jordan makes $400 million a year in passive income due to the percentage he gets from the sale of Air Jordans? To understand how this came to be, we must travel back to the 1980s and the campus of famed sneaker label Nike. The story is the subject of Ben Affleck’s newest film Air. Written by Alex Convery, the movie stars Affleck, Matt Damon, Viola Davis, Chris Messina, Chris Tucker, Jason Bateman and Julius Tennon.
Sonny Vaccaro (Damon) likes to gamble — i.e. he likes to take risks. He works for Nike CEO Phil Knight (Affleck) as the company’s basketball division expert. He looks for up-and-coming b-ball players and offers them shoe endorsement deals, and currently he has his eye on an 18-year-old Michael Jordan. Sonny thinks Jordan is worth...

Although Ben Affleck’s Air will tell the story of the “game-changing partnership” between Nike and the then-rookie Michael Jordan, the NBA superstar doesn’t actually appear in the movie. While speaking on the Inside Total Film podcast, Ben Affleck explained the choice not to include Michael Jordan as a character.
“Admittedly, we made as much a sort of fable as anything else, because it’s really about a character who never appears in the movie, in Michael Jordan,” Ben Affleck explained. “I felt that he’s just too iconic and recognizable and special, where you immediately would know the whole thing was a lie if I tried to tell you somebody else was Michael Jordan.” Affleck continued: “Fundamentally, what I love about it is that it’s actually about the person that I feel guided him, and serves to represent women like her all over the world, particularly in the United States,...

Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are back in Amazon’s new trailer for Air, a dramedy about the rise of Nike.
The Good Will Hunting pair costar as the clothing giant’s cofounder Phil Knight (Affleck) and executive Sonny Vaccaro (Damon). Affleck also directs.
The story begins in 1984 when Nike is then just the third-biggest shoe company in the industry, and Vaccaro is charged with growing the company’s basketball division.
To do so, Vaccaro embarks on a quest to sign a certain rookie basketball player named Michael Jordan, coming up against his protective mother Deloris Jordan, played by Viola Davis.
The result is, of course, the development of one of the most iconic shoes of all time, the Air Jordan, which was largely responsible for Nike overtaking its biggest competitor, Adidas.

Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s sports drama, Air, will hit the hardwood in cinemas worldwide on April 5, 2023. The project is also coming to Amazon Prime Video at a later date. The duo’s film focuses on the early days of Nike‘s marketing strategies and tactics, eventually making the brand a household name and the envy of sneakerheads everywhere.
Amazon Studios, Skydance Sports, and Mandalay Pictures, not Mandalay Industries, are backing the project from Affleck and Damon’s Artists Equity label. It’s rare for Amazon to be in favor of giving such a high-profile project a theatrical release. Still, bringing films to theaters is beneficial in drumming up early buzz for streaming releases. Hardcore fans will show up to theaters to see the movie early, but positive word of mouth also increases streaming customer numbers. Amazon oversees Air’s theatrical release in the United States, while Warner Bros.

Plans for a global theatrical rollout are significant in signaling that Amazon is willing to give a movie a traditional release in cinemas. Amazon will handle Air in North America, while Warner Bros. International has overseas duties per its distribution pact with MGM. The film’s release date on Prime hasn’t yet been announced.
“Ben, Matt and this all-star cast have delivered a fantastic film that will move, inspire and entertain audiences around the globe,” Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon and MGM Studios, said in a statement.

Some great news for exhibition Monday morning: Amazon Studios is getting back into the wide theatrical-release business with Ben Affleck’s Nike movie Air, starring his fellow Good Will Hunting co-Oscar winner Matt Damon.
Air will get a global theatrical release on Wednesday, April 5, heading into the lucrative Easter weekend. This is the first wide theatrical release from Amazon since its Sundance acquisition, Mindy Kaling’s Late Night, which had a wide summer release in 2019.
I hear Air will have a longer theatrical window than Amazon Studios’ recent limited theatrical releases, before hitting Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories. It truly is a first-of-its-kind arrangement for the studio as Amazon will distribute the film globally, with Warner Bros. Pictures handling international as part of its distribution pact with Amazon’s MGM. Amazon Studios only had U.S. on Late Night, not global rights.

Norwegian director Erik Poppe takes on Vilhelm Moberg’s acclaimed series of novels in “The Emigrants,” his new historical drama about a struggling Swedish family which emigrates to the U.S. in 1849, searching for a better future.
“It’s probably the most classic work of literature in the whole Scandinavia,” he told Variety, taking about the 2022 Haugesund Festival winner ahead of its national premiere at the 50th Norwegian International Film Festival Haugesund.
Which is why, when approached to direct the film, he had only one reservation: He had to make it his own.
“Sf Studios tried to develop it for years, with another director, but they couldn’t quite crack it. I agreed to take over under the condition that I would be able to start all over again. Focusing on what I believed was the most interesting part: the story of Kristina and her husband Karl-Oskar, their kids and their escape.
