Commander in Germany's Waffen SS during WWII. Gained renown for his
rescue of Mussolini from prison in Gran Sasso, Italy.
As a child he competed in sword-dueling. In one match he was cut across
the face, the cut left a large, permanent scar.
In 1944, he was assigned as the leader of 2,000 English speaking German
soldiers dressed as American GIs. The purpose of the mission was to
create havoc for the Allies behind their lines in France.
SS commander.
He was spared from execution because it was confirmed that Allied soldiers had worn German uniforms behind the lines.
He never expressed any regret over his actions during World War II, and never denounced Nazism.
