hollywoodnews.com: We don’t yet have a clear-cut frontrunner in the Oscar race. There is support in certain circles for such films as “Moneyball,” “The Descendants” and “The Help.” We’re still waiting to see “War Horse,” “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” and Stephen Daldry’s “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.” A lot can change between now and then.
One thing that hasn’t wavered, however, is the audience support for Michel Hazanavicius’s “The Artist,” which started charming patrons back at Cannes. The film’s latest conquest was The 2011 Austin Film Festival, which took home the Audience Award for the Out-of-Competition category at this year’s fest.
Totally understandable. It is an absolute crowd pleaser, and I expect it to play extremely well with Academy members this season. Well enough to win the Best Picture prize? Only time will tell.

The 17th annual Slamdance Film Festival is all set to run for eight days and nights Jan. 21-27. The festival is featuring a bold theme this year of “All Is Not Lost” where — due to the current devastating economic climate — Slamdance will donate 10% of ticket proceeds back to the filmmakers.
The fest is screening 14 feature films — 10 of which are in competition — and 8 feature documentaries, all of which are in competition. In addition, there will be 56 short films screening.
Plus, there are a couple of special screenings, including the Straight 8 event where anybody can register to receive a single roll of Super-8 film that they can use to direct their own in-camera edited mini-masterpiece. Also, on the 26th, there will be a special retrospective of the works of renegade ’60s filmmaker J.X. Williams.
The full film lineup is below, but for more information on the site please visit the official Slamdance website.

Remember the lawsuit that former SAG president Alan Rosenberg and three other Membership First members (1st VP Anne-Marie Johnson and board members Diane Ladd and Kent McCord) filed against their own union?
No? You may have blissfully forgotten this misbegotten legal action, filed a year and a half ago (!), but the courts haven’t. This is the lawsuit that attempted to reinstate former SAG National Executive Director Doug Allen and undo ratification of the SAG-AMPTP collective bargaining agreement. In a case of chasing a horse that’s left the barn, and despite two court decisions that the action was moot, the lawsuit drags on.

Veritas Studios has set Steve Skrovan to direct its first feature film, "Fred & Vinnie," written by and starring comic actor Fred Stoller. Skrovan, who will make his narrative feature directorial debut, also will exec produce.
The comedy about two mismatched guys forced to live together is scheduled to begin shooting in March.
"Fred and I have wanted to do a project together since our early stand-up days in New York City," Skrovan said. "This script captures the Fred I have known for so long: quirky, authentic, poignant and absolutely hysterical."
Stoller, repped by Amsel, Eisenstadt & Frazier Talent Agency, has appeared on "Everybody Loves Raymond," "Seinfeld" and "Friends" and in such features as "Dumb & Dumber," "Joe Dirt" and "Little Man." He also was a staff writer on "Seinfeld."
Skrovan, repped by Wma, is an Emmy winner who also wrote for "Seinfeld" and served as exec producer of "Raymond" and " 'Til Death.

NEW YORK -- IFC Entertainment and Netflix's Red Envelope Entertainment have nabbed all North American rights to the Oscar-shortlisted docu An Unreasonable Man, which follows controversial presidential candidate Ralph Nader.
The film, acquired from Submarine Entertainment and William Morris Independent, is slated for release through IFC First Take in theaters and via video-on-demand.
Henriette Mantel and Steve Skrovan's film follows longtime consumer advocate Nader, who went from being a widely admired product-safety champion to political pariah after his entry in the 2000 presidential race was believed by some to have contributed to the loss of Democratic candidate Al Gore.
IFC shares acquisition and P&A costs with Red Envelope for Man, which was produced by Kevin O'Donnell. The film will be released Jan. 31, the day the 79th Annual Academy Award nominations are announced.
The deal was negotiated by Liz Nastro and Jonathan Sehring for IFC with WMI and Josh Braun of Submarine. Jackie Eckhouse of Sloss Law was the legal consultant for the filmmakers.

PARK CITY -- A heroic crusader to some and the spoiler who betrayed the Democratic Party to others, Ralph Nader emerges as a dedicated, controversial and flawed figure in the documentary, "An Unreasonable Man".
Filmmakers Henriette Mantel, who once worked for Nader, and Steve Skrovan, smoothly integrate reams of material, dozens of insightful interviews as well as archival news footage and, without the use of a narrator, present a coherent, balanced picture of a lightning rod in the political arena.
Doc sustains interest for most of its 160 minute running time, but its length could be an obstacle to getting a theatrical release. PBS or cable TV outlets are possible venues.
The film starts in 1966 when Nader is launched to prominence after he riles General Motors with his attacks on car safety. He accused the automobile industry of selling "psychosexual dreamboats."
Mantel and Skrovan showcase Nader's tireless, forceful advocacy for the rights of the little guy and his own causes, which ranged from transportation safety to drug labeling and clean air. He fought the big boys and usually won. The list of organizations he founded or sponsored and the legislation he was instrumental in passing are impressive.
There are nagging questions about Nader's personal life -- by all accounts he doesn't have one -- and they aren't addressed till later in the film. Even then, little time is spent on the subject. Colleagues say he's married to his work, driven by a sense of injustice and a "never give up, never give in" ethos, a form of absolutism that has made him difficult to work for and harder to leave. Former employees say he was hostile to anyone who stopped working for him.
The film primarily focuses on how and why Nader's bid for the presidency in 2000 antagonized even his most ardent admirers. Many interviewed here are still angry.
What makes this doc so successful is the willingness to present a wide variety of opinions of Nader, a man who inspires intense emotions on both sides of the aisle. Todd Gitlin, Dean of the Columbia Journalism School, makes an impassioned case against Nader's misstep in 2000 and again in 2004. Of the former Nader's Raiders, some kept the faith; some are disillusioned, even bitter. There's a bit of levity, too. James Fallows recalls Nader's attack on hot dogs, which were labeled "missiles of death.' Clips from a "Saturday Night Live" show that Nader hosted are, for lack of a better word, surprising.
Editors Alexis Provost and Beth Gallagher cut back and forth between the talking heads so deftly that you have the illusion that Nader is answering his critics in real time in a very lively debate.
