Scott Sternberg Productions is expanding further into documentary production with the acquisition of Strong Island Films.
Sternberg, a veteran producer of unscripted TV, aims to expand the company’s activity in the true-crime arena, which is a speciality of Strong Island principles Rob Dorfmann and Cindy Dorfmann.
Sternberg financed the purchase on his own, and he remains the sole owner of his active production banner that is home to ID’s “On the Case With Paula Zahn” and the upcoming syndicated series “iCrime With Elizabeth Vargas.”
Bringing in experienced producers such as the Dorfmanns will help the company do more overall, Sternberg told Variety.
“We are happily independent,” Sternberg said of his business. “Rob and Cindy put us in a position of strength in terms of being able to create more crime docs.”

Scott Sternberg Productions today announced the launch of a new documentary division and the acquisition of Strong Island Films.
The first project under Ssp’s new division, Mötley Crüe’s Vince Neil: My Story, will premiere this Sunday on Reelz. Sternberg directed the documentary in which the lead singer of the legendary heavy metal band, in his own words, “details what led him to music, the formation and early days of Mötley Crüe, surviving his hardest party days and how he navigated the road to superstardom.” Neil and Sternberg are executive producers of the film.
The two-hour doc, featuring interviews with Neil’s son and daughter, as well as bandmates Tommy Lee and Nikki Sixx, and others, takes an “incredibly candid” view of the musician’s “much publicized setbacks — from the heartbreak of losing a young child to being arrested for driving under the influence after causing a crash that killed his friend.

Frank Ocean is making his presence known in the fashion world. The Grammy Award-winning singer was spotted attending several Fashion Week shows, including Givenchy, Dior, Valentino, Maison Martin Margiela and Chanel. The Telegraph even crowned him the new cool kid on the fashion scene--snatching the title from style-obsessed Kanye West.
With that said, it was only a matter of time before fashion brands started tapping Frank for their ad campaigns. First up? Band of Outsiders.
The Los Angeles-based clothing line features Frank in its men's Spring 2013 campaign. The images were shot by Band of Outsider's Creative Director Scott Sternberg in the signature Polaroid style we've come to expect from the company.

Singer, songwriter…model? That's right, for his latest gig Frank Ocean has stepped in front of the camera to star in Band of Outsiders ongoing Polaroid series for the brand's spring 2013 campaign. Armed with the old-school camera, the brand's creative director, Scott Sternberg, took to the top of the Los Angeles Times building to shoot the Grammy winner, who looks pretty dapper in the brand's sharply tailored suit. We can't say we're surprised the company tapped Ocean to don its latest collection. Remember how effortlessly edgy he looked in the brand's bold yellow tux during his performance at the 2013 Grammys? Ocean definitely caught our eye in the boldly hued ensemble, and...

My friend Tim Blum, owner of the gallery Blum and Poe, let us use his boat in [Marina Del Rey, California,] as home base, so we pulled all of the nautical stuff from spring and camped out for the day.” How Mrs. Robinson–y did the shoot get? Now that Fox has made it clear that American Idol is moving ahead without its popular (but polarizing) judge, is Paula Abdul about to become the most eligible bachelorette in television today? Many signs point to that possibility, as producers like Nigel Lythgoe and NBC reality guru Paul Telegdy have already indicated a willingness to work with the genial singer/dancer. Both have competition shows with judging panels -- Telegdy's network airs America’s Got Talent and Lythgoe exec produces So You Think You can Dance for Fox -- so adding Abdul to either show would make sense from a continuity standpoint (to say nothing about what it could do for ratings). But would it make sense for Abdul? While there’s little doubt that the former pop star can -- and will -- find ample opportunities beyond Idol, she’ll never score the kind of cash she could have...

Bio Channel is aggressively expanding its original programming slate with four new series in production, including a Chris Isaak-hosted talk show and William Shatner's previously announced interview series.
Meanwhile, sister channel A&E is planning to broadcast a live episode of "Criss Angel Mindfreak" in the show's upcoming fourth season.
Bob DeBitetto, president and Gm of A&E and BioBio said during the Television Critics Assn. press tour at the Beverly Hilton that it is nearly doubling its original content in primetime compared with summer 2007, when the network rebranded.
"We will continue to focus first and foremost on alluring people and their true stories in a fresh, honest and entertaining voice -- stories you just cannot make up," he said.
The slate, which will be shot in high-def, includes "The Chris Isaak Hour," which the network describes as "Biography" meets "Storytellers." The live performance and interview show, from Scott Sternberg Prods., will feature mainstream musical artists.
Also on the slate is "Shatner's Raw Nerve," an "edgy and offbeat celebrity interview series." "Nerve," also from Sternberg, premieres Aug. 19, with guests to include Shatner's former "Star Trek" co-star Leonard Nimoy, Jon Voight, Jimmy Kimmel, Judge Judy, Jenna Jameson, Kelsey Grammer and Valerie Bertinelli.
The other two new series are police-themed: "Female Forces," from the Greif Co., which follows female officers in a Chicago suburb, and "Why I Ran," from Intuitive, which interviews drivers who have led police on high-speed car chases.
Bio also is bringing "I Survived ..." back for a second season. The show, from Nhnz, interviews people who have survived life-threatening situations.
"Biography" also is returning with new episodes featuring Tyler Perry, Eddie Murphy and Mel Gibson, among others.
Meanwhile, "Mindfreak" has its fourth-season premiere July 23. The hourlong live episode will air a week later and will feature Angel attempting to escape from a six-story building that is loaded with explosives and set to detonate. The episode also will broadcast live on A&E Latin America and Fox 8 in Australia. "Mindfreak" is produced by Angel Prods. and the Firm.

Scott Sternberg Prods. is launching a documentary division, with plans to produce up to two feature-length docus a year.
The division will be headed by Sternberg, who is planning to bring in some new hires as a result of the move. It will focus on producing controversial and timely topic-driven documentaries that will draw attention to issues such as religion, relationships, fashion and disease.
Sternberg already has two docus in the works, including one in preproduction that's titled "I Can't Take It Anymore", which will center on four young adults raised in the orthodox Chasidic Jewish lifestyle and the challenges they face as they leave home and try adapt to life away from their family upbringing and traditional rules. The other docu will revolve around Morgellons disease, a mysterious illness that affects thousands of people.
"This seemed like a natural transition for us, being in the unscripted business -- but in a bigger way," Sternberg said, adding that he'll be looking at various distribution platforms -- including theatrical, film festivals, TV and Web -- for the docus.

Discovery Communications Tuesday highlighted a slew of new programming across all of its networks -- including Discovery Channel, TLC and the soon-to-launch Planet Green -- during its upfront presentation to advertisers at the Beverly Wilshire.
TLC said it is shaking up its schedule with an "aggressive" slate of programming and a scheduling strategy that creates new opportunities for advertisers to be integrated into the network's programming. Network executives said they're building a new brand that "creates an environment with a sense of humor and a home for real-life, feel-good reality," with the brand and content being organized into themed nights.
Monday will be the night for the network's most successful family-based comedy-reality series along with new shows in that theme, Friday centers on makeovers, and Saturday is themed around home and decorating. The other nights will focus on relationships, careers and entertaining and include new genres like competition and games.
Returning series include family reality shows "Little People, Big World" and "Jon & Kate Plus 8," makeover series "What Not to Wear", home-design shows "Trading Spaces" and "Flip That House". New to the schedule will be makeover series "Real Simple", home-design series "Your Place or Mine?" and the Bob Guiney-hosted "Date My House", relationship show "Single Moms" and career-themed "The Singing Office", from Scott Sternberg.
Falling into what TLC calls the "unusual lives" programs are returning series "L.A. Ink" and "American Chopper" and the new shows "Ashley Paige", about a bikini designer, and the tentatively titled "Napoleon Complex", which follows students at a makeup academy.
Among the new series at Discovery Channel are "Expeditions With Josh Bernstein," featuring the former History Channel personality that moved to Discovery last year; "How Stuff Works", based on the Web site; "Prototype This!" in which inventors and engineers try to create innovative prototypes; "One Way Out", centering on extreme escape artist Jonathan Goodwin; and "Time Warp", which plays with time to lets viewers see events that normally happen way too quickly or slowly, like the break of a matchstick.

It looks like there won't be another season of Hey Paula. The star of the series has pulled the plug.
The Bravo reality series follows actress/singer/choreographer/American Idol judge Paula Abdul through her daily trials and tribulations -- preparing for another season of Idol, developing her perfume and cosmetics line, and working on the movie Bratz. To the public, Abdul appears self-obsessed and emotionally fragile. The series gives an inside look as to some of the possible reasons why -- pressures from the relentless press, Idol, and from running numerous self-titled businesses.
Hey Paula is produced by Abdul, Ken Abraham, Darren Maddern, David Russo, David Russo, and Scott Sternberg. The series kicked off with two episodes on June 28, 2007 and averaged just over 600,000 viewers. Viewership fell to half that by the end of the season's seven episode run.

MyNetworkTV on Tuesday unveiled a reality-heavy fall schedule that will include a pair of new series -- the prison-set "Jail" and relationship-centric "Divorce Wars" -- along with a couple of familiar titles: the dating show "Meet My Folks", which previously ran on NBC, and the unscripted series "The Academy", which debuted Thursday on sister channel Fox Reality.
The network also is bringing back mixed martial arts-themed "IFL Battleground" on Mondays as well as the Thursday and Friday night "My Movie" blocks. "Academy" and "Jail" will air Tuesdays, while the tentatively titled "Divorce Wars" and "Folks" will air Wednesdays.
The new schedule will kick off the first week of September with the exception of Wednesday nights, where the dramas "American Heiress" and "Saints & Sinners" likely will finish in late fall. MyNet previously had announced it would be backing away from the scripted business to focus on more unscripted programming.
"We've continued to evolve", said Greg Meidel, president of MyNet, which launched in September with an all-telenovela schedule. "We've made a lot of strategic changes ... and become kind of a destination for our core demo (adults 18-49)."
Tuesday nights will now be slotted with series set in the world of law enforcement and will take advantage of the promotional platform afforded by "IFL" on Mondays to lure that show's male viewers the next night, Meidel said. "Academy", the show from Scott Sternberg Prods. that follows a class of recruits at the rigorous 18-week course at the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Training Academy, will air at 8 p.m., followed by back-to-back episodes of the new half-hour series "Jail" at 9 p.m.

Just when it seemed that the nation's political and cultural discourse couldn't get much more absurd, here comes the Tom and Jerry show. Lions Gate Television has pacted with Tom Green and Jerry Springer to develop a "week in review"-style program tentatively dubbed Fairly Unbalanced, which would feature comedian-actor Green and talk show host Springer discussing headlines and newsmakers and generally offering their observations on political and pop culture-oriented topics. TV veterans Al Burton and Scott Sternberg are on board as executive producers. Gabe Abelson, who worked with Green on his short-lived MTV late-night series last year, has signed on as head writer. Lions Gate began shopping the project to cable outlets earlier this week, according to Lions Gate TV president Kevin Beggs.
