There may be few ways of living more disconcerting than to be a one-season reality-tv star. The forced adjustment happens twice: First, suddenly, you’re thrust into the line of sight of the nation or the world, made into a symbol of something greater than yourself and flattened out into someone less than you know yourself to be. Then, gradually, you’re forced to watch from home as a new generation, then another, supplant you — making you into a “former” before you’ve had the chance to really be much of anything.
This is the experience explored by “The Real World Homecoming,” a show that concluded its third season June 8 on Paramount+. This viewer skipped the first two seasons, but tuned in for the reunion of the “New Orleans” cast, whose original outing, on MTV in 2000, was the first “Real World” season I watched in real time, compelled in particular...

When MTV’s “The Real World” came along in 1992, there were no reality categories at the Emmy Awards, recalls uber-producer Jonathan Murray, who’s now overseeing “The Real World Homecoming” on Paramount+. “So we would be in non-fiction going up against a Bill Moyers news special,” he explains. “It was many years before they got the competition category and then the reality category, which now has been divided into structured and unstructured.” He joins Gold Derby as part of our Meet the Experts: Reality TV panel (watch the exclusive video interview above).
“Before us, this idea of casting people and putting them together to learn something hadn’t been done,” notes Murray. “We had documentaries where we just follow seven people who are already friends, but no one had this idea of putting people together to see what would happen.” The producer is a 15-time Emmy nominee who took home...

Kelley Wolf Goes Deep on Supporting Danny, Julie’s Drama on ‘The Real World Homecoming: New Orleans’
When Kelley Wolf was first approached about reuniting with the cast of MTV’s “The Real World: New Orleans,” she was, she says, “extraordinarily skeptical.” While Wolf has remained somewhat of a public person as the wife of actor Scott Wolf — they met in 2002, two years after “New Orleans” first aired, and married in 2004 — she was deeply unsure she wanted to step back fully into the spotlight.
“You know, we are middle aged people,” she says. “I’m a mom. I don’t usually put on makeup in the day. It felt like a lot of things to kind of compartmentalize. The emotional side of it is massive. It’s a lot of vulnerability. And if I’m going to do something like that, I want to do it in my full self with my full truth — no masks, no pretending.”

For its third season, The Real World Homecoming reunites the New Orleans cast (from 2000), bringing David “Tokyo” Broom, Melissa Beck, Jamie Murray, Danny Roberts, Matt Smith, Julie Stoffer, and Kelley Wolf back to The Big Easy to once again stop being polite and start getting real. “I think there were a lot of things about our season that were really relatable to people at that time,” Stoffer tells TV Insider. “We were going through personal things that struck a chord with people. We are going to have some of that this time around. Now we’re all in our 40s, we’re all having our midlife crises, and there are some themes that are coming up again. I went through personal stuff in the month that I was down there.” While it may not all be relatable, due to the unique situation of the show, “overall, the feelings are the same,...

There are few alumni of MTV’s “The Real World” who have had as lasting a legacy as Danny Roberts. When the Georgia native stepped into the house for 2000’s “The Real World: New Orleans,” he was a strikingly handsome 22-year-old college graduate who was, at that point, still one of the few openly gay people on television. That would’ve been enough to make Danny famous, but his ongoing relationship with Paul Dill — a U.S. Army captain during the era of the military’s Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy — made Danny a sensation. To protect Paul’s identity, “Real World” producers agreed to blur his appearance, which added to the intensity of their relationship and made the couple overnight poster boys for the LGBTQ rights movement.
Today, however, Danny lives in seclusion in a remote cabin in Vermont. Other than regular posts to his Instagram account, including of his six-year-old daughter,...

To some subset of the audience of the 2000 reality show “The Real World: New Orleans,” Danny Roberts was the biggest celebrity on TV.
Roberts was the gay cast member on a TV franchise that placed a premium on frankness, openness, and unpracticed charm. The first episode of Roberts’ season saw him gradually and haltingly coming out to the six housemates producers had arranged for him to live with for months, at one point announcing he was gay in French so as to avoid doing so in English. Later on, his romance with a U.S. servicemember whose face had to be blurred in accordance with the Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy, was both tender and intriguing. Not immune to leaning into the inherent drama of being 22 and gorgeous and in love, Danny was a star. And he shone all the more brightly for the lack of others like him on TV.

The trailer reminds us that Julie has “a controversial history” with her roommates and that the bad blood from her actions in 2000 is still very present.

The Challenge is making the jump from MTV to CBS.
Paramount announced a series order for The Challenge: CBS, which will air in the Summer.
The series features “reality titans from the CBS universe will compete in the most unpredictable and demanding game of their lives.”
The contestants in the series would be vying for a spot on The Challenge's War of the Worlds championship event series on Paramount+.
They would compete against contestants from the just announced The Challenge: Argentina, The Challenge: Australia, and The Challenge: UK.
The Challenge is going global, and this could be a great way to introduce new competitors into the franchise.
MTV used to have feeder shows to bring new blood into The Challenge, but in recent years, we've had contestants from Big Brother, Shipwrecked, Survivor, and Love Island.
The franchise remains a big draw, so it makes sense to go...

It’s been a long, long time since we actively watched a new season of the Real World. In fact, looking back over a list of Real World seasons, the Real World: San Diego cast was the last one that we could name multiple cast members from without any sort of assistance. That said, our knowledge and love of the show’s first 14 or so seasons is beyond compare, which is why we were so delighted to learn that Rw: Boston‘s Sean Duffy was elected to the House of Representatives on Tuesday. Now, we’ll readily admit that we weren’t exactly Poli-Sci majors in undergrad or anything, but we’re pretty sure that this means Sean Duffy will be elected President of the United States some day (which, in an awesome twist, means that our First Lady will be a former fling of Puck’s). Once elected, one...
