When Amazon’s Prime Video streams a new “Black Friday” NFL game later this year, viewers won’t be greeted solely by a live match.
The company plans to offer commercials featuring its talent around the event, according to Danielle Carney, who heads up NFL sales for Amazon. During remarks made at an industry conference, Carney envisioned different “talent” being tapped to talk to viewers about possible buying opportunities. “Black Friday,” the day after Thanksgiving, is typically seen as the first day of the U.S. holiday shopping season.
“We can be thoughtful about deals we are showing to those who are tuning in,” Carney said, a possible allusion to the fact that streamers can place ads in front of specific audiences by using data about subscribers as well as consumer information from particular sponsors.

In an upfront week otherwise marked by smaller-scale events, and a lack of star power on stage, Disney threw everything it had (short of any actors) in an expansive upfront presentation Tuesday afternoon.
And that included dozens of stunt performers dressed as samurai engaging in combat in the aisles. But we’ll get back to that.
In a cavernous hall in Manhattan’s Jacob Javits Convention Center, on an enormous stage that took some talent a full minute to walk across, Disney touted every single one of its brands, from ESPN and ABC to FX and Disney+, to Marvel and Lucasfilm.
And while there may not have been any actors, the company included every star it could secure, from ESPN talent like Joe Buck, Troy Aikman, Peyton Manning, Hannah Storm and (their soon-to-be-colleague) Pat McAfee, to ABC News anchors David Muir, George Stephanopoulos, and Michael Strahan (24 hours after he appeared...

Oscar season may have wrapped for the calendar year 2022, but Best Actor winner Brendan Fraser is still enjoying the fruits of his recent career labors. On Thursday evening, “The Whale” winner appeared at the Greenwich International Film Festival’s inaugural Inspiration Talk and award ceremony in Stamford, Connecticut where he was honored with the Giff Inspiration Award “designed to honor artists who inspire others through their craft or philanthropic endeavors.”
As People reports, during a wide-ranging chat with broadcast journalist Hannah Storm, Fraser was characteristically open about what’s next. So, post-Oscars win, what does the Canadian actor have on the horizon? “At the moment, I don’t have anything — I’m really being picky right now,” Fraser said.
After a grueling (and often emotional) Oscar season spent stumping for Darren Aronofsky’s heart-wrenching drama and speaking candidly about his own personal connection to the material, Fraser has certainly earned a little respite.

Update: In his first interview since revealing earlier this year that he has stomach cancer, Toby Keith says he is “thinking about getting back into fighting shape.”
While acknowledging that his illness is “pretty debilitating, Keith added, “as long as everything stays hunky-dory, then we’ll look at something good in the future.”
Keith spoke to CMT Hot 20 Countdown on his condition. He said that “I need a little bit of time to just rest up and heal up.”
Keith made his illness public in June, canceling dates as he took time for treatment. But he’s done a few public appearances, including one performance in November at the Jeff Ruby Steakhouse in Lexington, Ky, where he performed “I Love This Bar” and Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Sweet Home Alabama.”
Earlier this week, Keith posted a sweet photo of himself on Instagram with a young cancer patient, writing alongside it, “Thumbs...

There will be lots of teams worth following this NFL season, be they the Tampa Bay Buccaneers or the returning Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams. Even so, many people in the media business have their eyes on a very distinctive player: Amazon Prime Video.
The streamer, which once shared “Thursday Night Football” games with Fox, now has exclusive rights to that action and must convince some pigskin Luddites to plug into broadband. Streaming “Thursday Night Football,” after all, will require a different kind of remote — and familiarity with a home screen, not a cable box.
“It is going to be a behavioral shift for people,” acknowledges Jay Marine, VP of Prime Video and its global head of sports. “Our job is to make sure they are able to find ‘Thursday Night Football’ at its new home and make it as easy as possible to get into the Prime Video app and start streaming.

Documentary filmmaker Dawn Porter considers Title IX, anti-gender discrimination legislation passed by Congress in 1972, as “one of the most misunderstood civil rights laws” and is setting out to change that with “Fifty/50,” a four-part ESPN docuseries that she is executive producing and co-directing.
On Oct. 19, she is slated to unveil a first look at “Fifty/50” during a conversation with fellow executive producer Allison Glock and Hannah Storm at the espnW: Women + Sports Summit in La Jolla, Calif.
“Fifty/50,” which she is co-directing with Nicole Newnham (“Crip Camp), celebrates the 50th anniversary of Title IX while also exploring the current struggle to maintain and evolve the 1972 law that forbids discrimination based on gender.
Prior to 1972, gender discrimination was commonplace in education and athletics. Physical activity for girls and women was cast as unfeminine, and while schools poured money and other resources into programs for male students, budding female athletes were left to fend for themselves.

“Fifty/50,” which she is co-directing with Nicole Newnham (“Crip Camp), celebrates the 50th anniversary of Title IX while also exploring the current struggle to maintain and evolve the 1972 law that forbids discrimination based on gender.

The National Basketball Assn. champion Milwaukee Bucks have a new voice as their play-by-play announcer. Also a new gender.
Veteran sportscaster Lisa Byington is the new lead announcer for Bucks television broadcasts on Bally Sports Wisconsin for the 2021-2022 season. She replaces longtime announcer Jim Paschke, who is retiring. Former Bucks All-Star forward Marques Johnson will continue as analyst
Although other women have done one-off play-by-play for games, Byington is the first full-time female play-by-play announcer for a major men’s professional sports team.
“We are so excited to welcome Lisa to the Bucks family and to bring such a talented play-by-play announcer to our broadcast team,” said Bucks President Peter Feigin. “Lisa’s extensive television broadcasting background, including her play-by-play work for high-level NCAA basketball on several national networks,...

CBS, NBC and Fox have all had issues with “Thursday Night Football.” Amazon sees possibilities.
The e-commerce and streaming giant believes a new deal with the NFL that gives it sole control over the league’s Thursday-night franchise lends it an opportunity to create new viewing experiences for streamers and chances to work more expansively with advertisers. In the past, Amazon has streamed Thursday games using the feed of the broadcast network producing the telecast, and has only been able to offer a limited amount of commercial inventory around each event.
“We have already devoted a lot of time to thinking about how to use new technologies to drive viewing experiences,” says Marie Donoghue, Amazon’s vice president of global sports video, in an interview. “We think this will be a great opportunity to continue to do that. The opportunities are endless with this relationship.”

Amazon has set broadcast crews and other programming on Prime Video and Twitch for what it is billing as a week-long “NFL Holiday Blitz.”
The spree of football starts today and runs through Saturday’s exclusive stream of the San Francisco 49ers-Arizona Cardinals game, which will mark a milestone for Amazon. The company has steadily ramped up its sports offerings in recent years, part of an effort by several major tech firms to leverage the tune-in potency of live game coverage.
On Christmas Day, Prime Video and Twitch (the gaming-centric streaming platform Amazon acquired in 2014) will offer streams of the Minnesota Vikings-New Orleans Saints game. That complementary stream will follow the season’s Thursday night pattern, with Fox and the NFL Network airing the game on linear TV.

Amazon has set a more aggressive game plan to drive viewers to “Thursday Night Football” streaming for the 2020 season, adding several new features and “shoulder programming” for the NFL games available on both Prime Video and Twitch.

Top CAA agent Nick Khan, who was Co-Head of Television, is departing the agency to join client WWE as President & Chief Revenue Officer, reporting directly to WWE Chairman & CEO Vince McMahon.
Khan fills the void left by the January exit of Co-Presidents George Barrios and Michelle Wilson who were ousted in January amid a rocky last year for the company. Unlike other sports franchises, which were shut down by the coronavirus pandemic in March, WWE continued to produce its flagship weekly TV series, Raw and SmackDown. Fox Sports play-by-play commentator Joe Buck says he’s “never been more flattered” after a porn website offered to pay him $1 million to call live-cam shows.
Buck’s tongue-in-cheek comment came after the offer from the site IMLive was reported by Action Network’s Darren Rovell on Friday. “The site says it is also accepting applications from other national and local sports commentators,” Rovell wrote on Twitter.
When reached for comment by Si.com, Buck said, “I am highly qualified as I have been practicing these calls most of my life, but I don’t want to just take that job without a proper, open audition. So if they get Jim [Nantz] and Al [Michaels] and Mike [Tirico] and all the others who do what I do to audition, I’m in. If any one of them say no, I’m out.”

Jimmy Pitaro, a seasoned digital executive who has been president of ESPN for the past year and a half, offered a predictably upbeat assessment of the Disney unit in an appearance Thursday at the Paley Center.
The 45-minute conversation with SportsCenter anchor Hannah Storm started with a four-minute recitation of ratings gains across several programs, from U.S. Open tennis to Monday Night Football to Major League baseball. The session steered clear of controversial topics like the recent push away from politics, carriage talks with AT&T/DirecTV or coziness with sports leagues. Even so, it offered some rare public samples of the thinking from the corner office at a dynamic moment in sports media.
Pitaro, both during the session and in the Q&a portion afterward, expressed confidence in the ability of the network to continue to retain sports rights. Atop the list in terms of dollars is the network...

Hannah Storm knows football fans have to take an extra step to listen to her and Andrea Kremer broadcast “Thursday Night Football.” “It is your choice,” she told viewers during last week’s game between the Denver Broncos and the Arizona Cardinals.

From covering Super Bowls to co-commentating The Bachelor Winter Games with Chris Harrison, Hannah Storm has done it all. But in 2012, a horrific burn accident almost threatened it all.

“My oldest daughter, she was so calm that night — I basically yelled in, ‘Mommy’s on fire! Call somebody!’ ” Storm, 55, tells People. “I...

Welcome back! I think the Bachelor Winter Games could very well be the best of all the Bachelor shows. The romance, the emotion, the international element, the, uh, almost athletic events. It really is a tour de force.
As I told you before, we had planned to do downhill skiing as the first event, but we just didn’t have enough snow to make that happen. Thankfully, the snow came in and at just the right time.
